Dev Engineer Review

The parser treats the blank line before a DSML calls block and layout newlines inside the block as non-content. It holds possible separator newlines across stream increments until later input or finish() resolves them. It preserves trailing text and emits held text only when the stream does not end inside an unfinished block. The change adds finish(self, tools: List[Tool]) to DeepSeekV32Parser. It does not implement the linked /v1/responses or disaggregated-serving objectives.

QA Engineer Review

tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py adds tests for DeepSeek V3.2, V4, and V4.1 across varied chunk sizes. The tests cover layout newlines, preserved content whitespace, text after a block, trailing blank lines when no block follows, and streams that end inside a block. The file is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml; no manual-QA list entry was found. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the stated DSML parsing behavior.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/serve/tool_parser/deepseekv32_parser.py: Verify that separator whitespace is suppressed across stream boundaries and at finish(). Verify that content outside the calls block remains intact, including text after the closing tag.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py: The tests cover newline handling and content preservation across three DSML formats, including incomplete streams. The file is listed in the CPU CI test list and has no manual-QA list entry.

Description

The DeepSeek V3.2, V4 and V4.1 encoders lay a tool-call block out one invoke per line: a newline after the opening tag, between invokes, and before the closing tag. The streaming DSML parser, which the three share, took the newline after each invoke for text. It emitted that newline as content once the next invoke or the closing tag arrived. Whether it did depended on how the stream was chunked: when the whole block arrived at once, the invoke regex skipped the newline.

  • A Chat Completions client got stray newlines after its tool calls.
  • Over Anthropic Messages each newline became a whitespace-only text block after a tool_use block. Anthropic clients drop such blocks when they send a turn back (the API rejects them). So with DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, Claude Code and the pi coding agent sent back turns that no longer matched what the server delivered.

Inside a block, whitespace that only separates invokes or precedes the closing tag is now dropped, however the stream is chunked. Text after the closing tag is still content.

The blank line before the opening tag is the format's too: the encoders write the content, a blank line, then the block. The streaming parser delivered it as content, so every reply with tool calls carried a text that ended in two newlines (the Anthropic adapter only drops whitespace-only text blocks, #20874). The non-streaming parser stripped all whitespace around the content instead.

The second commit drops exactly that blank line on both paths and keeps the content's own whitespace.

  • While streaming, trailing newlines are held until the next increment shows whether a block follows.
  • finish(), which the chat and Responses streaming paths call when generation ends, emits whatever is still held, except inside an unfinished block. A reply that ends in blank lines without tool calls keeps them.

Test Coverage

tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py (CPU, already in l0_cpu.yml). Every test covers the V3.2, V4 and V4.1 formats:

  • test_dsml_newlines_between_calls_are_not_content streams two calls, laid out as the encoders write them, in chunks of 1, 3 and 7 characters and as one chunk. The content is only the text before the block, without the blank line, and both calls arrive with their arguments.
  • test_dsml_text_after_the_block_is_still_content checks that text after the closing tag is kept.
  • test_dsml_blank_line_before_the_block_is_not_content: content with its own leading and trailing whitespace, then the blank line and the block, streamed in chunks of 1, 2, 3 and 7 characters and as one chunk, and parsed in one piece. Both paths return the content exactly.
  • test_dsml_trailing_blank_lines_without_a_block_are_content: newlines held back come out at finish() when no block follows.
  • test_dsml_stream_cut_inside_the_block_keeps_only_the_content: a stream cut short inside the block ends with its content, as the non-streaming path reads the same text.

On the first commit alone, 36 of the 51 DSML cases fail by assertion; with both commits all pass.

A property-based check backs the examples. Replies were rendered with the server's own V4.1 renderer (tensorrt_llm/tokenizer/deepseek_v41/tokenizer.py), with generated content and calls (whitespace at the edges, zero to three calls). They were parsed back non-streaming and streaming, at random chunk boundaries, per character, and cut short, with finish() called at the end.

  • The content came back exactly in 500 generated cases.
  • Six planted bugs were each caught: stripping on the non-streaming path, keeping the blank line, never holding, holding one newline, finish() dropping held text, and finish() emitting inside a block.

End to end (first commit): one GB300 node served DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash (TP4/EP4 with attention DP, --tool_parser deepseek_v41 --reasoning_parser deepseek_v41). Both sides were installed from the same precompiled CI build of main 9bb7931, so they differ only in Python.

Claude Code 2.1.289 ran six coding tasks over /v1/messages, and the pi coding agent 1.4.0 ran eight. A recorder between the clients and the server compared each turn a client sent back with the reply the server had delivered.

  • Before, every echoed assistant turn came back without its whitespace-only text blocks: 18 Claude Code turns and 9 pi turns differed from what was served.
  • After, all 21 echoed turns matched what was served. All six Claude Code tasks were done correctly: the bug fixed and its test passing, the summary file written, and the three questions answered.

Later, 8 Claude Code sessions on coding tasks ran against DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash with the first commit. A raw-output check compared each delivered reply with what the model wrote. 189 of 636 streamed replies delivered a text ending in the blank line before their tool calls. That check is what led to the second commit.

…ls are not content

The DeepSeek V3.2, V4 and V4.1 encoders lay a tool-call block out one invoke
per line: a newline after the opening tag, between invokes, and before the
closing tag. The streaming parser, which all three share, took the newline
after each invoke for text and emitted it as content once the next invoke or
the closing tag arrived. Over Anthropic Messages this became a
whitespace-only text block after every tool_use. The pi coding agent drops
such blocks when it sends the turn back, so with DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash every
replayed turn differed from what was served. Chat clients got stray newlines
after their tool calls.

Inside a block, whitespace that only separates invokes or precedes the
closing tag is now dropped, however the stream is chunked. Text after the
closing tag is still content. The newlines before the opening tag are left
as they are: dropping them means holding them back, which needs every
protocol path to flush the parser when the stream ends.

Walkthrough

The DeepSeek V3.2 parser now handles the blank-line separator around DSML calls blocks in one-shot and streaming parsing. It tracks calls-block state, resolves buffered text at stream completion, and handles text after a closing tag. Regression tests cover DeepSeek V3.2, V4, and V4.1.

Add a single-chunk trailing-text case.

test_dsml_text_after_the_block_is_still_content always uses five-character chunks. Add a 10,000-character case to cover a complete DSML block and trailing text in one increment.

Suggested fix

-    content, calls = _stream(parser_cls(), text, 5, sample_tools)

Coverage summary: the tests cover all three formats, four chunk sizes for layout handling, and trailing text in five-character chunks. tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py is already listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml.

…n the increment that closes it

When one increment held a whole tool-call block and text after it, the
invoke loop stopped at the last invoke and left the closing tag and that
text in the buffer for a later increment. If none came, the text was lost:
nothing flushes this parser when the stream ends. After its last invoke, an
increment that already holds the closing tag now reads the rest of its
buffer once, so the text after the block comes out with it.

The text-after-the-block test also runs the whole block in one increment.

Learning: In NVIDIA TensorRT-LLM streaming tool parsers, ordinary text emitted before a tool-call marker must preserve whitespace verbatim and be independent of streaming delta boundaries. This can differ from `detect_and_parse()`, which may normalize the complete non-streaming prefix. Do not require streaming DeepSeek V3, V3.1, V3.2, or V4 parsers to `.strip()` this prefix; stripping can make output depend on batching and lose whitespace.

Learning: In `tensorrt_llm/serve/tool_parser/base_tool_parser.py`, streaming normal text before tool-call markup must be preserved verbatim so output is independent of streaming increment boundaries. Parser-specific `detect_and_parse()` whitespace trimming is existing one-shot behavior and must not cause streaming trimming; changing one-shot whitespace behavior is a separate compatibility concern.

Learning: In `tensorrt_llm/serve/tool_parser/deepseekv32_parser.py`, `DeepSeekV32Parser.parse_streaming_increment()` must use suffix-based partial-token detection on the accumulated buffer for `bot_token`, the invoke start token, `eot_token`, `invoke_end_token`, and `_eos_token`. This prevents loss of ordinary text after a diverged DSML prefix and prevents split closing delimiters from leaking into `normal_text`. `DeepSeekV4Parser` inherits this behavior.

…l-call block is not content

The DeepSeek V3.2, V4 and V4.1 encoders write a reply as its content, a
blank line, then the tool-call block. The streaming parser delivered that
blank line as content (a text that ended in two newlines before every
tool call), and the non-streaming parser stripped all whitespace around
the content instead.

Both now drop exactly the blank line before the block and keep the
content's own whitespace. While streaming, trailing newlines are held
until the next increment shows whether a block follows; finish() emits
whatever the stream ended holding back, outside an unfinished block.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve text after an empty calls block.

If an increment contains <|DSML|function_calls></|DSML|function_calls> Done., no invoke removes the opening tag from _buffer. This condition rejects the buffer, and finish() emits nothing because _in_calls_block remains true. The client loses " Done.". Handle the closing tag when a block has zero invokes. Add this case to tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_tool_parsers.py. As per path instructions, flag changed “observable output with no meaningful test.”

Assert trailing text before finish().

_stream() appends finish() before the test checks normal_text. The test can therefore pass if " Done." is emitted only during finish(). Assert that the increment results already contain " Done.", then call finish() for the final combined-content assertion.

Suggested test adjustment
-    content, calls = _stream(parser_cls(), text, chunk_size, sample_tools)
+    parser = parser_cls()
+    increment_results = [
+        parser.parse_streaming_increment(
+            text[i:i + chunk_size], sample_tools)
+        for i in range(0, len(text), chunk_size)
+    ]
+    assert "".join(result.normal_text for result in increment_results) == " Done."
+
+    finish_result = parser.finish(sample_tools)
+    results = increment_results + [finish_result]
+ content = "".join(result.normal_text for result in results)
+ calls = [call for result in results for call in result.calls]

This remains a test coverage gap, not evidence of a current production failure.

function_calls block followed by “ Done.” and verify that text remains in the
output.

normal_text from parse_streaming_increment results for " Done." before calling
finish(). Then call finish() and retain the final combined-content assertion
across increment and finish results.

…ut of its increment

The test of text after the tool-call block streams without finish(), so it
checks that the increment holding the closing tag emits the text, and that
finish() adds nothing.

@coderabbitai On review 5650564522:

  • Assert trailing text before finish(): agreed, done in 59d2e15. test_dsml_text_after_the_block_is_still_content now streams without finish() and asserts that the increments already emitted " Done.", then that finish() adds nothing. If the read of the rest after the last invoke is removed, the single-increment cases fail.
  • Empty function_calls block followed by text (outside the diff, line 377): not taken in this PR. Main drops the text after an empty block in the same way, in streaming and in detect_and_parse alike: Hi<|DSML|function_calls></|DSML|function_calls> Done. yields "Hi" on main and on this branch, for chunk sizes 1, 3 and the whole text. The behaviour predates this PR, which only changes how the newlines around a block are read, so it is left for a separate fix.

@JunyiXu-nv I checked the test diff in 59d2e157af.

  • Trailing text: The test uses finish=False, asserts that the increments emit " Done.", then checks that finish() emits no additional text. It covers chunk sizes 5 and 10,000. This addresses my test concern. I did not run the tests.
  • Empty block: I accept your scope explanation. The reported behavior predates this PR, so I will not treat it as a regression introduced here.

Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for text dropped after an empty function_calls block?
