Allow multimodal_config.encoder_attention_backend to select VANILLA, TRTLLM or FLASHINFER for each supported multimodal encoder, independently of the language model. Unsupported values, disabled encoders and encoders whose attention cannot be changed are rejected before weights are allocated. Omitted settings keep today's defaults.
Every multimodal model declares, per encoder, which backends it supports or that its attention cannot be changed. A test fails if any model or encoder is missing a declaration, and the documentation lists all models. Validation and config handling live in shared helpers, and the generated serving schemas are updated.

CPU: 231 tests pass, covering parsing, validation errors, unchanged defaults, model declarations, encoder propagation and serving schemas. The new tests are collected by existing test-list entries.
GPU (one GB200): small Qwen3-VL and Gemma 4 encoders ran with each backend, and every explicit choice used the requested backend. Qwen3-VL outputs matched the default bitwise; Gemma 4 outputs differ slightly between backends (maximum relative L2 0.0054), as expected from different attention kernels.
All applicable pre-commit hooks and schema/manifest checks pass.

Dev Engineer Review
The change adds multimodal_config.encoder_attention_backend for per-encoder VANILLA, TRTLLM, or FLASHINFER selection. Shared config handling, model support declarations, loader validation, serving schemas, routing checks, and documentation implement the feature across multimodal model families.
The main correctness risk is keeping each model’s declared support aligned with the encoder implementation and its default. Backend selection also needs to preserve decoder configuration and model-specific state, including KV-cache quantization. Loader validation, disabled-encoder handling, and FlashInfer availability are important error paths to verify.
Test results and completion status are not available from completed checks on the current head. The objectives report CPU tests and hardware experiments, but those reports do not establish current-head results. The supplied CI comments include both successful and failed or unstable runs, without identifying the failing tests.
QA Engineer Review
Five test files changed: one was added and four were modified. They cover backend parsing and defaults, model declarations and propagation, loader validation and error cases, CUDA graph compatibility, serving schemas, KV-cache quantization, and Qwen4-Exp routing.
The test lists include the multimodal test directory and the two changed LLM API test files in CPU CI. The Qwen3-VL modeling test is covered by selected L40S entries. No matching CI or manual-QA list entry was found for the Qwen4-Exp routing test. The changed serving-schema test is listed in CPU CI. No changed integration tests or test-list files were found. The objectives report 231 CPU tests passing, but current-head test results are not available. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up, because the Qwen4-Exp routing test is not listed in the inspected test lists and current-head execution is unverified.

Summary
Configuration and selection contract tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm_args.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/model_config.py, scripts/generate_trtllm_serve_schemas.py, tensorrt_llm/schemas/trtllm-serve-*.json, docs/source/features/multi-modality.md, tests/unittest/llmapi/*
Adds the optional per-encoder backend mapping and methods to resolve or apply an override. Generated and checked-in schemas accept backend names case-insensitively. Documentation describes defaults, supported encoders, and configuration failures.
Model capability declarations tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_*.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/models/modeling_multimodal_mixin.py, tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_encoder_attention_backend.py
Adds supported-backend declarations across multimodal model classes. Tests compare declarations with registered models and documentation.
Updates encoder setup to use selected backend values. Gemma4 keeps the text backend separate from vision and audio configuration. Kimi vision configuration adjusts copied KV-cache quantization when the selected backend differs from the general backend.
Model loading rejects overrides for unknown, unsupported, fixed, disabled, or unavailable encoders and rejects FlashInfer when it is unavailable. Tests cover validation and the VANILLA CUDA graph restriction.
Add disaggregated-schema regression coverage to protect the accepted backend values. The remaining merge risk is bounded.

Test Kimi K3 vision attention with an override.
K3 selects a backend for its own attention stack and metadata class. A K2.5 test would not cover K3's distinct construction path, and the new tests only check K3's declaration. Add a small K3 vision-forward case with an explicit non-default backend in tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_encoder_attention_backend.py. Check that the selected attention and metadata work together. As per path instructions: “Review TensorRT-LLM production-code changes for meaningful test coverage in addition to normal code review.”

Test Kimi K2.5 vision attention with an override.
This selection changes the backend used by MoonViT3dEncoder and its attention metadata. The new tests check the declaration, but none runs the K2.5 vision path with an override. A backend–metadata mismatch could therefore pass those tests and fail on the first image. Add a small vision-forward case with VANILLA and FLASHINFER in tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_encoder_attention_backend.py, with GPU capability gating where needed. Test MiniCPM-V attention after backend selection.
This change routes MiniCPM-V vision attention through the selected backend. The new tests verify its declaration but do not exercise attention with the matching metadata from _make_attn_metadata. Pass the required maxseqlen to the MiniCPM vision metadata helper.

Pass the required max_seq_len to the MiniCPM vision metadata helper.
Any nonempty MiniCPM image or video input reaches _make_attn_metadata. That call omits the keyword-only max_seq_len that prepare_encoder_attn_metadata requires, so the vision forward raises TypeError before attention runs. The call predates this PR, but the new MiniCPM encoder backend declaration cannot run until the call is fixed.
Pass the segment capacity. The helper requires a positive value that is at least the largest segment length. max(seq_lens) meets that contract for this path, because _make_attn_metadata builds fresh metadata on each call and does not reuse captured buffers.
Add a MiniCPM forward case with a nonempty image input to tests/unittest/_torch/multimodal/test_encoder_attention_backend.py. It should run once for each declared backend. Without that case, this crash path has no test coverage.

Thanks. In e045dcc, I aligned this with #21458. The RADIO vision default is now TRTLLM, on the same line and with the same comment as #21458. So whichever PR lands second has a trivial rebase. VANILLA and FLASHINFER can still be picked with encoder_attention_backend. The docs table lists supported backends, not defaults, so it stays the same. I added one sentence under it that names the TRTLLM default. test_radio_encoder_backend_keeps_decoder now checks the TRTLLM default with a FLASHINFER decoder, and the VANILLA and FLASHINFER overrides.
Problem:
Encoder backend choices mixed public attention backends with HF names
and repeated validation and config-copy logic across model families.
Solution:
Accept VANILLA, TRTLLM and FLASHINFER. Validate model declarations before
weight allocation, reject fixed or disabled encoders, and apply overrides
with shared config helpers. Preserve omitted defaults and decoder choices.
Update docs and schemas; reuse existing CPU test collection.
Validation:
Fresh SM100 core build; 230 CPU tests and applicable hooks passed.
BF16/TP1 Qwen3-VL and Gemma 4 smoke completed 16 forwards with all public
backends, including head64/head72 cases. Fixed elementwise checks met
atol/rtol 0.05 in 9/12 comparisons. Gemma FP differences are recorded;
maximum relative L2 was 0.005398392211645842. No tolerances were retuned.

Problem:
An encoder override kept the decoder's FP8 KV-cache setting on
Qwen2.5-VL and Kimi K2.5; FlashInfer rejects it without a KV cache.
VANILLA derives segment boundaries on the host, so encoder CUDA graph
replay would reuse the captured ones. The loader checked encoder
presence before model_kwargs were applied. Tests did not check the
backend passed to the Pixtral, RADIO and Step3 towers.
Solution:
Drop KV-cache quantization when an override changes the encoder
backend; defaults are unchanged. Reject VANILLA for an encoder that
also enables encoder_cuda_graph. Check encoder presence on the config
loaded with model_kwargs, before model construction. Add CPU tests for
these cases, for the backend each tower receives, and for loader class
resolution.
Validation:
CPU suites of the PR and touched files match upstream main apart from
the new passing cases; applicable pre-commit hooks pass.

Problem:
trtllm-bench sets disable_mm_encoder for text-only runs, so a serving
config with encoder_attention_backend failed at startup. Under
modeling_v2 auto or require, the Qwen4-Exp target built its own vision
tower and ignored the selection. The Nemotron-H RADIO vision default was
FLASHINFER, whose plan build for a new image shape can stall during
CUDA graph replay. Backend names were repeated outside the config
Literal, and this PR also carried a MiniCPM-V 4.6 fix owned by another
change.
Solution:
Skip the encoder-presence check with one info log when the encoder is
disabled; model support checks still run. Decline the Qwen4-Exp target
when an encoder backend is selected, so auto uses the built-in model and
require names the setting. Default RADIO vision to TRTLLM; VANILLA and
FLASHINFER stay selectable. Read backend names from a named Literal and
document the ModelConfig helpers. Drop the MiniCPM-V 4.6 max_seq_len
change and a test that restated model declarations.
Validation:
CPU suites of the PR and touched files match the previous head apart
from the changed tests, which pass; applicable pre-commit hooks pass and
the serve schemas are unchanged.

The test checks only SERVE_SCHEMA. DISAGG_SCHEMA also accepts multimodal_config. No other test validates encoder_attention_backend against that schema, so a disaggregated-only regression, such as accepting SDPA or rejecting lowercase vanilla, can pass the suite. Running the same cases against both schemas closes this gap. The disaggregated multimodal_config uses the same top-level shape, so the test body changes only where the schema is selected.

Description
Allow
multimodal_config.encoder_attention_backendto select VANILLA, TRTLLM or FLASHINFER for each supported multimodal encoder, independently of the language model. Unsupported values, disabled encoders and encoders whose attention cannot be changed are rejected before weights are allocated. Omitted settings keep today's defaults.Every multimodal model declares, per encoder, which backends it supports or that its attention cannot be changed. A test fails if any model or encoder is missing a declaration, and the documentation lists all models. Validation and config handling live in shared helpers, and the generated serving schemas are updated.

Dev Engineer Review
The change adds
multimodal_config.encoder_attention_backendfor per-encoderVANILLA,TRTLLM, orFLASHINFERselection.
