What does this PR do?

Fixes a correctness hole in checkpoint resume for diffusion (DiT) trainers.

DiT condition models sample the noise and timestep ids used to build training targets. For Wan and Qwen-Image this comes from a per-run torch.Generator;for LTX2 / MiniMax-H3 it comes from the accelerator's default RNG.Neither is model state, and the job-level checkpoint (GlobalStateCallback) previously saved and restored only the CPU generator (torch.get_rng_state()).

On resume, the condition model is rebuilt fresh — and re-seeded — in a new process, so the resumed run replayed the noise stream from the start of the run at the first resumed step instead of continuing it. Training continued but was not bitwise-equivalent to an uninterrupted run. Verified by running the real DiTTrainer twice against a dummy dataset with dropout active (p=0.5):without the fix the resumed run diverges from the uninterrupted one at the first resumed step; with it the streams line up exactly.

This adds three pieces:

  • the device-default RNG snapshot (get_device_rng_state / set_device_rng_state);
  • a rng_state_dict / load_rng_state_dict protocol on the Wan and Qwen-Image condition models that own a torch.Generator;
  • wiring in GlobalStateCallback to persist both across the resume, plus a rank-0 warning when a condition model owns a generator but does not expose rng_state_dict (so a future generator-backed model cannot diverge silently).

Checklist Before Starting

  • Related issues/PRs: none found — this closes a gap where the resume-path was never exercised (tests/train_scripts/train_dit_test.py sets the condition model to None and skips process_condition entirely).
  • PR title follows [{modules}] {type}: {description}.

Test

  • Extended an existing CI-enumerated test: new cases in tests/checkpoints/test_checkpoint_callback.py (already listed in the gpu_unit_tests.yml / npu_unit_tests.yml tests/checkpoints/ runs) cover the new device_rng_state / condition_model_rng_state fields, the noise-stream round trip, backward compatibility with checkpoints written before the
    fields existed, and the new warning.
  • Added a new test file tests/checkpoints/test_dit_resume_align.py that runs the real DiTTrainer twice (uninterrupted vs. resumed from a mid-run checkpoint) under FSDP2 + DCP on the same dummy dataset and asserts the noise/timestep signatures match on the resumed steps. It lives in tests/checkpoints/, which both unit workflows enumerate wholesale, and skips on CPU. Dropout is kept on by default (VEOMNI_ALIGN_DROPOUT_P=0.5) to guard the ordering-symmetry invariant. Verified with 2 NPUs: 1 passed.
  • make quality passes for all changed files.

API and Usage Example

No user-facing config changes. New optional protocol on diffusion condition models:

  • rng_state_dict() -> dict[str, torch.Tensor]
  • load_rng_state_dict(state: dict[str, torch.Tensor]) -> None

A condition model that draws noise/timesteps from a per-run torch.Generator should implement both so the stream is restored on resume. Models that sample from the accelerator's default RNG need no change — device_rng_state covers
them.

Design & Code Changes

  • veomni/utils/device.py: add get_device_rng_state() / set_device_rng_state(), accelerator-agnostic (CUDA / NPU / MLU via get_torch_device()), returning None / no-op where the device namespace does not expose the accessor.
  • veomni/trainer/callbacks/global_state_callback.py: persist device_rng_state and condition_model_rng_state in the job-level checkpoint; restore both on load with backward compatibility (.get); warn if a generator-owning condition model exposes no rng_state_dict.
  • veomni/models/diffusers/{wan_t2v,qwen_image}/*_condition/modeling_*.py: add rng_state_dict / load_rng_state_dict for the per-run generator.
  • veomni/trainer/dit_trainer.py: expose the condition model on the reused BaseTrainer instance so GlobalStateCallback can reach it.

Checklist Before Submitting

  • Read the Contribute Guide
  • Applied pre-commit checks
  • Added/updated documentation
  • If tasks/ training scripts were moved or renamed: updated docs/ examples and verified python3 scripts/ci/check_doc_task_paths.py passes (also enforced by the Check doc task paths CI workflow)
  • Tests: extended an existing CI-enumerated test, or added a new test and wired it into gpu_unit_tests.yml (and npu_unit_tests.yml where applicable), or explained in Test why none is needed. Note that CI enumerates test files individually — a new file outside tests/data/ and tests/ops/ does not run until it is listed. See .agents/knowledge/testing.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Checkpoint resumption now preserves CPU, accelerator, and supported condition-model random-number streams.
    • Supported DiT condition models can restore noise and timestep generation for consistent resumed runs.
    • Checkpoints remain compatible when device or model-specific random-state restoration is unavailable.
    • Additional checkpoint state is stored and restored alongside model data.
  • Tests

    • Added distributed accelerator coverage verifying deterministic DiT checkpoint-resume behavior.
  • Documentation

    • Updated testing guidance for resume and noise-stream equivalence.

…T resume

DiT condition models draw noise and timesteps from the accelerator default
RNG and a per-run ``torch.Generator``. The job-level checkpoint only restored
the CPU generator, so a resumed run replayed the noise stream from the start
instead of continuing it. Persist the device RNG state and any condition-model
``rng_state_dict`` in the global state, and restore both on load, with backward
compatibility for checkpoints written before the fields existed.

Adds unit tests in test_checkpoint_callback and an end-to-end resume-equivalence
test that runs the real DiTTrainer twice against a dummy dataset with dropout
active (p=0.5).
…ersisted

A condition model that owns a ``torch.Generator`` but exposes no
``rng_state_dict`` would silently replay its noise/timestep stream from the
construction-time seed on every resume. Warn on save so the miss is visible
instead of silent. Only fires for models holding their own ``generator``
attribute — device-default-RNG models (LTX2, MiniMax-H3) are already covered
by ``device_rng_state`` and stay quiet.

Walkthrough

The change moves condition-model RNG handling into checkpoint extra state, adds device RNG persistence, exposes condition-model state APIs, and updates DiT wiring. It also adds checkpoint unit tests and a distributed accelerator-gated resume-equivalence test.

Changes

RNG-aware checkpoint resume

Layer / File(s) Summary
RNG state contracts and trainer wiring
veomni/models/diffusers/..., veomni/utils/device.py, veomni/trainer/dit_trainer.py
Condition models expose generator state methods. Device utilities save and restore CPU or accelerator RNG state. DiT exposes its condition model through the base trainer.
Checkpoint extra-state persistence
veomni/models/checkpoint_manager.py, veomni/checkpoint/dcp_checkpointer.py, veomni/trainer/callbacks/global_state_callback.py
The checkpoint manager stores scheduler and condition-model RNG state in extra_state. The checkpointer writes rank-local extra-state files. Global state stores device RNG state and loads checkpoints without that field.
Checkpoint state validation
tests/checkpoints/test_checkpoint_callback.py
Tests cover extra-state forwarding, condition-model RNG restoration, device and CPU RNG restoration, missing RNG fields, and condition-model setup.
Distributed resume-equivalence validation
tests/checkpoints/test_dit_resume_align.py, .agents/knowledge/testing.md
An accelerator-gated distributed test compares uninterrupted and resumed DiT signatures for steps 4–6. The signatures include noise, timestep, dropout, and device-RNG behavior. The testing knowledge table maps this coverage to the new test file.

Condition-model RNG is model-bound state, not job-cursor state, so persist
it in the DCP extra_state alongside the lr scheduler instead of the
GlobalStateCallback cursor. torch/device RNG stay in the cursor.

Validate resume equivalence on every rank.

SignatureCallback.on_train_end writes signatures only for rank 0. The checkpoint path saves and restores both device RNG state and _AlignConditionModel state in each rank’s extra_state file, but a regression affecting only a nonzero rank can therefore pass this test.

Write one signature file per rank and compare resumed signatures for every rank. The tests/** instruction to prefer rank-sensitive tests supports this coverage, but it is advisory rather than mandatory.

Synchronize model-bound extra-state I/O across ranks.

_create_checkpoint_dir and _save_extra_state run before the DCP save and outside its error-handling path. A rank-local directory or torch.save failure can therefore leave other ranks entering DCP collectives alone.

During load, _load_extra_state checks only the current rank's file. Partial presence can restore lr_scheduler and condition_model_rng_state on only some ranks. A rank-local torch.load failure has the same consequence before later collectives.

Catch save-side directory and write errors, then call raise_if_any_rank_failed before DCP save starts. On load, collectively check sidecar presence and read success. Accept a legacy checkpoint only when every rank lacks the sidecar, and apply loaded state only after all ranks report success.

Restore the scheduler from the legacy lr_scheduler.pt sidecar.

ModelCheckpointManager.load() passes only an empty extra_state destination. DistributedCheckpointer.load() then calls _load_extra_state(), which only replaces that destination when a rank-local extra-state file exists. It does not invoke the legacy scheduler loader. A supported checkpoint with only lr_scheduler.pt therefore leaves the scheduler at its initial state, changing subsequent learning rates after resume.

Restore the legacy sidecar fallback at this load boundary. Populate state["extra_state"]["lr_scheduler"] from lr_scheduler.pt when the current extra-state file is absent, while preserving the existing legacy sidecar precedence.

Use a more general way:
extra_state = self.trainer.extra_state() and return_dict.update(extra_state)
In dit_trainer:

def extra_state():
    return self.condition_model.rng_state`

Move model-bound extra state to trainer function.

ModelCheckpointManager no longer hard-codes the DiT condition model; it calls
trainer.extra_state()/load_extra_state() so each trainer contributes its own
model-bound state (the condition model's noise/timestep generator for DiT).
…a_state

Keep the lr scheduler and condition-model RNG in the per-rank extra_state/
layout rather than the upstream lr_scheduler.pt sidecar: gate the extra_state
rank on dist.is_initialized() so single-process saves read/write rank 0, and
rewrite the checkpoint tests that still asserted the replicated sidecar.
…runtime

The condition model is built by DiTModelRuntime, not DiTTrainer, so the test's
trainer-level overrides were dead code and the real from_pretrained() ran with a
null condition_model_path. Swap the stand-in in via _build_model_runtime().
Wan's ``rope_apply`` has a non-standard signature, so its device patch
explicitly disables the liger RoPE backend and raises if it is selected.
The framework default for ``rotary_pos_emb_implementation`` is
``liger_kernel``, and Wan's production YAMLs pin ``eager`` to avoid it, but
the resume-align test builds the toy Wan model from a config path and never
went through a YAML. On the GPU CI that made both the in-process weight
materialization and the trainer subprocess fail with

  ValueError: rotary_pos_emb_implementation='liger_kernel' is explicitly
  disabled for Wan

Pin ``eager`` in the test, matching the Wan configs.
