[ops] fix: causal_conv1d over-counts dh0 when the backward tile is narrower than the conv window - #1265
Conversation
…rrower than the conv window
dh0 is split into cdiv(W, BT) slots and summed. With BT >= W that is one slot
and the result is exact; with BT < W the multi-slot path over-counts and the
gradient w.r.t. initial_state comes back 1.5x to 3.7x too large. The forward
stays bit-exact and nothing raises, so the error is silent.
BT is derived from the chunk length and the device's vector-core count, so the
threshold is hardware-dependent: on a 910B2C with 48 vector cores and W=4,
every state-carrying chunk of 96 tokens or fewer is affected.
Verified on Ascend 910B2C (CANN 9.1.1, torch 2.10.0, torch_npu 2.10.0.post2,
triton-ascend 3.2.2) for W in {2, 4, 8} across chunk lengths 16 to 384: every
previously-wrong case becomes exact and no previously-correct case changes.
fla-org/flash-linear-attention removed this split-and-sum in ByteDance-Seed#717 by moving dh0
into a dedicated kernel; that restructuring is in a different file under a
different licence, so the clamp here is the smallest change that makes the
shipped gradient correct and it disappears with the old dh0 path on a future
re-vendor. Every copy in this lineage -- MindSpeed-MM (both copies) and
flash-linear-attention-npu -- still has the bug; reported separately.

The clamp keeps dh0 on its correct single-slot path by never tiling narrower
than the convolution window, but that only stays inside the BT=8/BD=32 UB budget
derived above while W <= 8 — the same range the budget itself was derived for.
Past that the branch would quietly exceed it, so raise instead.
Measured for W in {2, 4, 8}; nothing in tree uses a wider convolution.

[P2] For W=4 and packed lengths [1,7] on 48 vector cores, widening BT from 1 to 4 lets mask_head_rows admit rows from the next sequence into dw, corrupting previously correct weight gradients. Include o_t < T_len in the head dy/y load masks and add a short-segment regression test.

Fixed in b5490b82. Included o_t < T_len in mask_head_rows and guarded dy0_row loads by T_len as well to prevent admitting rows from subsequent sequences in packed short-segment mode. Added a short-segment regression test (lengths [1, 7], W=4) in tests/ops/test_npu_kernels.py. Thanks for the careful catch!
…ed execution When BT is clamped to at least next_power_of_2(W) to keep dh0 on a single-slot path, packed sequences shorter than BT (e.g. lengths [1, 7] with W=4, BT=4) could let mask_head_rows (o_t < i_w) admit rows from the next sequence into b_dw and dh0 dy0 loads. Include o_t < T_len in mask_head_rows and guard dy0_row loads by T_len, and add a short-segment regression test.

…nv1d regression test
…rrower than the conv window (ByteDance-Seed#1265)
What does this PR do?
causal_conv1d_bwd_implsplitsdh0into one slot percdiv(W, BT)and sums them. WithBT >= Wthat is a single slot and the result is exact; with
BT < Wthe multi-slot path over-counts, so thegradient with respect to
initial_statecomes back 1.4x to 3.8x too large. The forward stays bit-exact and nothing raises, so this is a silent wrong gradient.
BTis derivedfrom the chunk length and the device's vector-core count, so the threshold is hardware-dependent: on a
910B2C with 48 vector cores and
W = 4, every state-carrying chunk of 96 tokens or fewer is affected, and the same code is correct on a device with a different core count.
Today no in-tree caller reaches it — the adapter does not forward
initial_state— so this is a latentfix rather than a live one. It is worth making now precisely because the failure is silent: whoever
first carries convolution state across calls (prefix reuse, chunked or streaming paths) would get no
signal at all.

Design & Code Changes
veomni/ops/kernels/gated_delta_rule/_ascend/triton/convolution.py, in the branch that runs wheninitial_stateis given:BT = min(8, triton.next_power_of_2(triton.cdiv(max(16, B * T), NUM_CORES))) + BT = max(BT, triton.next_power_of_2(W))Never tiling narrower than the convolution window keeps
cdiv(W, BT) == 1and the single-slot paththat is already correct.
BTstays at or below 8, which is the budget the surrounding comment alreadyvalidates for
W <= 8and all dtypes. The cost is some parallelism on short chunks, which are shortby definition.
The alternative is to fix the multi-slot accumulation itself, which would keep the parallelism but
needs someone who knows the kernel's intent for those slots; the clamp is the conservative repair.
