What does this PR do?

The NPU gated RMSNorm previously ignored activation="sigmoid" and always applied SiLU. Honor the activation, preserve the sigmoid reference cast boundary, and retain the existing default SiLU route. Also honor parameter device/dtype and reject invalid gates.

Test

3 CPU contract tests passed using a mocked torch_npu implementation; these are not native kernel parity tests. make quality passed with Ruff 0.13.1. Native precision/performance validation remains required.

Scope

Extracted from an Ascend training baseline and ported to public main. No dataset paths, deployment credentials, runtime images or private bootstrap hooks. This PR does not claim complete end-to-end checkpoint validation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added device and data type configuration for NPU gated RMS normalization parameters.
    • NPU gated RMS normalization now requires a gate matching the input shape and rejects unsupported activations.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for outputs, gradients, zero-gate behavior, and invalid inputs.
    • Added NPU comparisons with a reference implementation for sigmoid and SiLU modes across supported data types and autocast settings.

Review repair receipt (2026-10-09)

2026-10-09 review fixes: added real, unmocked Ascend sigmoid/SiLU forward and x/gate/weight-gradient parity tests for BF16/FP32 with autocast on/off. Explicitly wired the test into NPU CI and corrected the existing SiLU fixture's gate width to match its input. Validation: 3 CPU contract tests passed; 8 native cases skipped on this CPU host; pinned Ruff make quality passed. Native parity awaits NPU CI; it is not claimed as passed.

Maintainer repair — 2026-10-16

Merged current upstream and repaired all six legacy extended fixtures to use matching hidden/gate shapes; invalid gates are tested separately for sigmoid/SiLU. 5 portable tests passed; 34 native cases skipped across the targeted files. The Ascend workflow now imports the real torch_npu runtime and asserts a live NPU immediately before parity tests, so missing hardware cannot produce a green all-skipped parity gate. Native BF16/FP32, sigmoid/SiLU and autocast forward/all-gradient parity remains to be executed.

Published revision: e9119722e6f48417cca7863ca69816a0bea9baa3. No force push or training JobRun modification.

Native feedback dependency correction — 2026-10-16

Reconciled upstream 0c1d908 without changing the validated sigmoid unit-weight normalization/cast boundary or SiLU fused arithmetic. Retained upstream generic ACT2FN and swish support, with four additional portable output/all-gradient checks. Unknown activation rejection uses a genuinely unsupported name. Targeted regression: 9 passed,34 native cases skipped; pinned Ruff0.13.2 and independent review pass.

Current exact revision: 0df941853639999845fa3db4bf64bdac1009847e. No forced history rewrite, resource action or new native success claim.

Explicit native-test requirement — 2026-10-18

Revision 1256dc0ec3714470644f8bff4ac8e607ca40d250 explicitly passes VEOMNI_REQUIRE_NPU=1 into the native parity pytest process. In that mode the test directly imports torch_npu and asserts that a live NPU is available, so a missing runtime/device fails rather than skipping. Ordinary CPU invocations retain optional native-case skips.

The workflow already had a separate runtime/device preflight; it remains intact. This follow-up makes the requirement explicit inside the test process as well. No kernel arithmetic, numerical tolerances or training configuration changed. As requested, no new pytest/hardware/experiment run; Ruff, whitespace, syntax checks and independent static review passed.

📝 Walkthrough

The NPU gated RMS norm wrapper accepts activation, device, and dtype parameters. It validates activation names and gate shapes, adds a sigmoid path, and retains the fused SiLU/swish path. Tests cover outputs and gradients on CPU and Ascend.

Changes: NPU RMS Norm Gated Support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wrapper behavior
veomni/ops/kernels/gated_delta_rule/npu_rms_norm_gated.py
NPUFusedRMSNormGated accepts device and dtype parameters and validates activation names and gate shapes. Its sigmoid path normalizes with unit weight, applies the learned weight, and gates with sigmoid. The fused SiLU/swish path remains, and other supported activations use a generic fallback.
Wrapper tests and NPU workflow
tests/ops/test_npu_rms_norm_gated.py, tests/ops/test_npu_kernels.py, tests/ops/test_npu_kernels_extended.py, .github/workflows/npu_unit_tests.yml
CPU and native Ascend tests check outputs, gradients, activation behavior, and validation. Existing kernel tests use gates shaped like hidden_states. The NPU workflow checks runtime and device availability before running the new tests.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: coach257, kirrito-k423

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 0df94

The Ascend test job will no longer pass by silently skipping all native parity cases when its NPU is unavailable. No merge-blocking issue remains from this review.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0df94

This is a bounded numerical-kernel contract change with no demonstrated new security exposure. Native-device validation and coverage of all dependents remain incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated propagation is through the existing in-process NPU kernel registry and model normalization callers. The reviewed call sites satisfy the tightened shape contract; complete dependent, tenant, and deployment exposure is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Activation and gate validation enforce a numerical module contract, not authentication or tenant isolation. Backend selection remains subject to the existing NPU registry requirement; no new authority transition is visible in the inspected delta.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The forward wrapper constructs local intermediate tensors and contains no explicit in-place update to its inputs or registered weight. Rejection of an invalid gate occurs before native operations, so the added validation does not introduce a partial persistent update within this wrapper.
  • observed — The workflow imports the real runtime and requires a live NPU immediately before parity testing. Missing runtime or hardware fails that step rather than allowing an all-skipped parity invocation to succeed.

Closing as superseded by #1309 and #1142 on main:

  1. activation="sigmoid" support in NPU rms_norm_gated: Landed in [ci, ops] feat: cover the Ascend GatedDeltaNet kernels in NPU tests #1309 and carried over into the functional VeomniOp adapter in veomni/ops/kernels/gated_delta_rule/rms_norm_gated/standard/torch_npu.py via [BREAKING][ops, model] refactor: replace OpSlot with VeomniOp #1142 (SiLU/swish use npu_swiglu, while sigmoid multiplies torch.sigmoid(gate.float()) against torch_npu.npu_rms_norm(x, weight, eps)[0], keeping weight fused inside npu_rms_norm without per-step torch.ones allocations).
  2. NPUFusedRMSNormGated (nn.Module) removal: Under [BREAKING][ops, model] refactor: replace OpSlot with VeomniOp #1142, NPUFusedRMSNormGated was removed; models (Qwen3_5GatedDeltaNet, Qwen4ExpGatedDeltaNet) own self.norm.weight and call the functional rms_norm_gated op handle directly.
  3. Tests and Ascend CI: The legacy tests/ops/test_npu_kernels*.py files were replaced by tests/ops/gated_delta_rule/test_gated_delta_rule.py (including test_rms_norm_gated_npu_sigmoid_matches_eager_bf16 and test_rms_norm_gated_rejects_an_unknown_activation), which runs as part of pytest tests/ops in npu_unit_tests.yml.
