[omni, model] feat: add OfflineEncodingMixin for offline-cache modules

What does this PR do?

Adds OfflineEncodingMixin, the module-side capability for running an expensive, deterministic encoder (e.g. a VAE / ViT) once offline and training from the cached tensors afterwards. Opt-in by multiple inheritance; a module that never mixes it in is unaffected.

Part of the SeedOmni mixin split (#1065), on top of the runtime / trainer that landed in #1235.

Checklist Before Starting

Test

Added a new test under tests/seed_omni/mixins/, which both unit workflows already run (pytest tests/seed_omni is recursive in gpu_unit_tests.yml and npu_unit_tests.yml).

tests/seed_omni/mixins/test_offline_encoding_mixin.py (16 tests):

  • cache_mode comes from the constructor, defaults to full; unknown modes and cached modes without support_cache are rejected.
  • cache_mode is visible inside the native model body and is not written to config.json (while support_cache is).
  • Both endpoint gates (offline_encode in process_only, online_process in encode_only).
  • MRO contract: a sibling *OfflineMixin wins over the abstract stubs, and listing TrainingModuleMixin before this mixin fails at class creation.
  • The decorated pre_forward / post_forward slots carry the conversation payload.

Also checked by hand against a real PreTrainedModel: _from_config(cfg, cache_mode=...) reaches the mixin and config.to_dict() has no cache_mode.

pytest tests/seed_omni # 310 passed, 7 skipped
make quality # clean

API and Usage Example

class XxxOfflineMixin:
    def offline_encode(self, pixel_values): ...    # -> {"encoded_cache": ...}
    def online_process(self, encoded_cache): ...   # -> {"latents": ...}

class XxxAccelerated(XxxOfflineMixin, OfflineEncodingMixin, TrainingModuleMixin, BaseMixin, XxxModel):
    ...

# config.json: {"support_cache": true, ...}
model = XxxAccelerated(config, cache_mode="encode_only")   # or "process_only" / "full" (default)
model.cache_mode # "encode_only"; the native body can skip sub-networks this mode never uses

Design & Code Changes

  • support_cache vs cache_mode. config.support_cache says the checkpoint can run from a cache and is saved with it. cache_mode (full / encode_only / process_only) is a per-run choice, so it is a constructor kwarg kept on the instance and never stored on the config. __init__ sets it before the native body runs, so the body can branch on it (a VAE in encode_only never allocates its decoder). train_type keeps its meaning as the training-graph selector and is not involved.
  • Abstract offline_encode / online_process tensor endpoints, supplied by a sibling *OfflineMixin placed before this mixin so the concrete call-sites win MRO lookup.
  • pre_forward gate rejects an endpoint the current cache_mode cannot serve. TrainingModuleMixin.pre_forward does not chain to super(), so __init_subclass__ rejects any class that lists it before this mixin rather than silently skipping the gate.
  • No checkpoint hooks. Checkpoint I/O stays with OmniModuleCheckpointManager; fully frozen cached modules already skip it, and partially trainable ones will be handled there when such a module lands.
  • Docs: docs/key_features/omni_offline_encoding.md describes the three cache modes, support_cache vs cache_mode, the endpoint / hook contract and the base order, and is linked from the Key Features index.

Deliberately not here:

  • Wiring cache_mode from the launcher YAML into module construction — build_foundation_model takes no model kwargs today, so every runtime-built module is full until the train-and-cache PR adds that path (together with the cache shard writer and the reduced-mode state-dict handling).
  • Any concrete module (e.g. a VAE *OfflineMixin) — those arrive with their models.

Checklist Before Submitting

  • Read the Contribute Guide
  • Applied pre-commit checks
  • Added/updated documentation
  • If tasks/ training scripts were moved or renamed: updated docs/ examples and verified python3 scripts/ci/check_doc_task_paths.py passes (also enforced by the Check doc task paths CI workflow)
  • Tests: extended an existing CI-enumerated test, or added a new test and wired it into gpu_unit_tests.yml (and npu_unit_tests.yml where applicable), or explained in Test why none is needed. Note that CI enumerates test files individually — a new file outside tests/data/ and tests/ops/ does not run until it is listed. See .agents/knowledge/testing.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added offline-cache workflows for compatible models, with full, encode-only, and process-only modes. The selected mode controls whether encoding and processing endpoints are available, and non-default modes require a model configuration that supports caching.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on offline encoding modes, configuration requirements, endpoint behavior, and inheritance expectations.

Test runtime metadata instead of source text.

inspect.getsource() only checks substrings. The abstract-method test can pass when @abstractmethod applies to an unrelated method. The hook test can pass or fail because of a comment or docstring.

The pre_forward and post_forward decorators store their contexts in _omni_pre_context and _omni_post_context, which are the markers read by BaseMixin. Assert those markers directly, and remove the unused inspect import.

Module-side offline-cache capability, opt-in by multiple inheritance:

- `cache_mode` derived from the launcher/runtime pair `support_cache` +
  `train_type` (`full` / `encode_only` / `process_only`), with `patch_config`
applying both onto the live config before the native model body runs, so a
module can skip building sub-networks it will never use (e.g. a VAE in
  `encode_only` never allocates its decoder).
- Abstract `offline_encode` / `online_process` tensor endpoints; a module
supplies the concrete pair from a sibling `*OfflineMixin` placed before this
mixin in its bases so the real call-sites win MRO lookup.
- `pre_forward` gate that rejects an endpoint whose `cache_mode` cannot serve
it, checked once per method instead of on every micro-batch.
- Default no-op partial-DCP hooks plus a `save_full_hf_checkpoint` hook that a
non-`full` module must implement, since the frozen-source merge policy is
  module-owned.

Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
…rain_type derivation

cache_mode is a per-run choice and stays on the module instance; only
support_cache, a checkpoint property, lives on the config. train_type is
the training-graph selector and no longer maps to cache modes.
…gMixin

Checkpoint I/O belongs to OmniModuleCheckpointManager; fully frozen cached
modules already skip it, and partially trainable ones will be handled there.
TrainingModuleMixin.pre_forward does not chain to super(), so a module
listing it first silently skipped the cache-mode gate; reject that order
at class creation. Check cache_mode on every call instead of caching the
result, validate the mode before the model body runs, and replace
source-text assertions in the tests with behavioral ones.

Merge szl.omniv2-1065-offline-encoding-mixin-v1 at 90ba56e, the head of
#1211. The branch sits on main after #1235, so this also
brings in #1204, #1221 and #1169 from main.

omniv2 already contains #1235 through its unsquashed 1064 branch (083161d),
whose tree matches the squash for every SeedOmni file. The merge was therefore
resolved against 083161d instead of the true merge base: only the changes
in 083161d..90ba56e are applied. Merging from the old base would have
re-added code that omniv2 deleted after the 1064 merge (e.g.
ConversationItem.source) without a conflict.

Conflict resolution:
- mixins/offline_encoding_mixin.py: take #1211. cache_mode becomes a
constructor kwarg kept on the instance; derive_cache_mode, patch_config,
RUNTIME_CONFIG_KEYS and the partial-checkpoint hooks are gone. omniv2's
callers are ported in the next commit.
- seed_omni/__init__.py, mixins/__init__.py: keep omniv2, which also exports
MetricMeterMixin; the OfflineEncodingMixin export is the same on both sides.
Coach257 added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 9, 2026
Adopt the OfflineEncodingMixin API merged from #1211 across omniv2.
`cache_mode` used to be derived from `config.train_type`, which collided
with the launcher's graph-selecting `model.train_type` and was stripped
from `model_config`, so every module silently ran in `full`.

- `OmniTrainingArguments.module_cache_mode` maps the workflow
(`train.train_type`) to a cache mode for `support_cache` modules:
  offline_cache -> encode_only, train_with_cache -> process_only.
- `ModuleRuntime.cache_mode` is the single source; `_build_model` hands
it to the constructor via the new `build_foundation_model(model_kwargs=)`.
- The data side reads the same value: `OmniProcessor.from_config(
cache_modes=)` and `bind_module_assets` forward it to the module
preprocessor; the trainer no longer injects `train_type` into
  `model_config`.
- Bagel VAE: reorder bases so the cache-mode gate runs, read
`self.cache_mode` in the model, take `cache_mode` in the preprocessor
and apply `model_config` overrides via `config.update` so an
undeclared `support_cache` override is not dropped.
- Drop the offline checkpoint overrides: fully frozen modules have no
checkpoint manager, so they were never reached. `ModuleRuntime` now
rejects a trainable module in a reduced mode, and a `support_cache`
module whose class silently ignored the `cache_mode` kwarg.
- Update docs and tests.
Coach257 added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 9, 2026
Brings in the Ulysses-inside-CP mesh order (#1257), the squashed
OfflineEncodingMixin PR (#1211, same content as the branch head merged
earlier) and the per-module metric meter with the omni MFU roll-up (#1212).

Resolved toward main's design:
- Metric meter: take main's MetricMeterMixin (`metric_meter_add(method)`),
  OmniEnvironMeter, compute_device_memory_metrics and
OmniStepMetricsCallback. Drop omniv2's OmniEnvironMeterCallback and the
  OmniTrainer/OmniModelRuntime/ModuleRuntime `collect_step_metrics` chain in
favour of `OmniModelRuntime.metric_meter_collect`. Keep one omniv2 need:
the callback skips `training/lr` when `offline_cache` builds no lr scheduler.
- Docs: drop `docs/key_features/omni_offline_encoding.md` (main moved it to
`docs/seed_omni/mixins/offline_encoding.md`; the merge base predates it, so
git kept the stale copy) and port omniv2's cache_mode wiring, current scope
and tests into the new page. Re-point line anchors main's docs carry to
omniv2's line numbers, and update seed_omni.md, constraints.md and the
seedomni-v2 skill to the new meter API.
