What does this PR do?

Adds the VeOmni accelerated layer over SeedOmni, so a composed OmniModel can train and infer through the existing runtime, checkpoint, and launcher stack.

  • ModuleRuntime (one per graph module) and OmniModelRuntime (the composed handle) own build, parallelize, weight load, freeze/LoRA, optimizer, per-module checkpoint, grad clip, and each module's ParallelState.
  • OmniTrainer and OmniInferencer orchestrate that handle. Entry points are tasks/omni/train_omni.py and tasks/omni/infer_omni.py.
  • SeedOmni data transform and SeedOmniCollator batch conversations through OmniProcessor.preprocess_batch.

Follows #1192. Not in this PR: the environ meter, offline cache (OmniTrainingArguments has no train_type, so the key is rejected at parse time), and the module mixins (metric meter, offline encoding, embedding parallel).

Checklist Before Starting

Test

New tests live under tests/seed_omni/, which gpu_unit_tests.yml and npu_unit_tests.yml already run as a directory (pytest tests/seed_omni), so the new files are picked up without a per-file CI edit.

CPU (no process group):

  • argument resolution against the fake_model launcher YAMLs
  • ModuleRuntime inheritance, checkpoint manager, and train_args
  • training-node and generation-node execution matching eager OmniModel
  • OmniTrainer pieces: grad-accum scaling, HF-export cadence vs the DCP counter, reshard cascade
  • eager inference launch

CPU gloo process group: step metrics reduced across two ranks with different loss nodes, and weight export of a DDP-wrapped module.

Two CUDA devices (skipped otherwise): tests/seed_omni/test_omni_launch.py drives configs/seed_omni/fake_model/train/base.yaml through tasks/omni/train_omni.py (train and resume) and distributed tasks/omni/infer_omni.py (fake_module_a DDP beside fake_module_b FSDP2).

API and Usage Example

Training:

bash train.sh tasks/omni/train_omni.py configs/seed_omni/fake_model/train/base.yaml \
    --model.model_config.modules configs/seed_omni/fake_model/train/modules_train.yaml

Inference. All-eager loads a plain OmniModel; any FSDP2 / DDP / ExtraParallel module builds an OmniModelRuntime:

python tasks/omni/infer_omni.py configs/seed_omni/fake_model/train/base.yaml \
    --model.model_config.modules configs/seed_omni/fake_model/infer/modules_infer_eager.yaml \
    --infer.prompt "hi"

OmniArguments is the launcher schema (model plus per-module overlays, job-wide data / train / infer).

Four builders turn it into a model, named after what they return: build_omni_model_runtime_args resolves OmniArguments into OmniModelRuntimeArguments, using build_omni_module_runtime_args for each module's OmniModuleRuntimeArguments; build_omni_model_runtime then composes the OmniModelRuntime, building each ModuleRuntime with build_omni_module_runtime. A plain OmniModel needs none of them and loads through OmniModel.from_pretrained.

Design & Code Changes

OmniTrainer is not a BaseTrainer. One job holds many ModuleRuntimes, so the trainer composes OmniModelRuntime instead of inheriting a single VeOmniModelRuntime. It still follows BaseTrainer's skeleton and hook names (_setup, _build_model_runtime, _build_dataset / _build_collate_fn / _build_dataloader, _build_lr_scheduler, _build_training_context, model_reshard, sync_before_train_step, on_* hooks over _callbacks), and, as there, the model handle owns what is model-bound: self.model.optimizer / lr_scheduler, clip_grad_norm(), save_model_assets(), wait_for_pending_save().

  • Per module. ModuleRuntime subclasses VeOmniModelRuntime. OmniConfig.load_checkpoint_sidecars loads each module config once and passes it in; the runtime reads model_path only for weights. Training args are stored as train_args so they do not shadow nn.Module.train or the checkpoint manager. A frozen module has no optimizer, scheduler, or checkpoint. When every module is frozen, OmniModelRuntime.optimizer / lr_scheduler stay None and OmniTrainer refuses the job.
  • Wrap scope. Only the top-level fsdp_scope counts. module (default) wraps each module on its own; model defers every module and fully_shards the composed OmniModel once, and a module on fsdp_mode: eager is rejected at argument resolution under it. Async activation offload is applied per module before either wrap (VeOmniModelRuntime._apply_async_activation_offload, extracted unchanged from the base parallelize step). fsdp_mode: eager is refused by the generic VeOmniModelRuntime.
  • Composed model. OmniModel holds each runtime's bare omni_module. DDP and LoRA wrappers stay on the runtime, and train nodes, generation, and export call the module through that wrapper. forward takes the TrainNodeRunner (wrapper unwrap, per-module ParallelState scope, graph profiling). Generation drains artefacts with _collect_generated after every node and runs pre_generate / post_generate around the endpoint.
  • Class resolution. OMNI_ACCELERATED_MODEL_REGISTRY is preferred by get_model_class, so the training / FSDP path gets the graph hooks. Eager inference keeps the plain class. fake_module_a / fake_module_b register minimal accelerated hooks for the smoke tests.
  • Train loop. Per-module optimizers and schedulers sit behind MultiOptimizer / MultiLRScheduler on OmniModelRuntime. Each step resets the async activation-offload managers of every module that enables them, as BaseTrainer does, and train_end drains in-flight async DCP saves before teardown. The MoE router monitor is not supported and is refused up front. Each node loss is a micro-batch mean, so backward is scaled by 1 / num_micro_steps. Grad clip goes through OmniModelRuntime.clip_grad_norm() (veomni_omni_model_clip_grad_norm), which combines the norms each ModuleRuntime.clip_grad_norm() (veomni_omni_module_clip_grad_norm) returns. Callbacks: per-module DCP, per-module HF export (its own counter, so a step that also saved DCP still exports at train_end), root assets, step metrics, graph profile. Resume state goes through GlobalStateCallback, which now tolerates a trainer with no environ meter. TrainerState.stage records the current hook.
  • Data. veomni/data/seed_omni/ ports the conversation transform, image / audio / video preprocess helpers, and SeedOmniCollator, which calls OmniProcessor.preprocess_batch; the shared data_collator.py is untouched. OmniTrainer imports veomni.data.seed_omni to register data_type: seedomni (the only value OmniDataArguments accepts) and its preprocessors, and imports SeedOmniCollator from veomni.data.seed_omni.collator, so import veomni.data still does not load veomni.models. The offline-cache transform is not included.
  • Shared hooks, same behavior for single-model jobs. VeOmniModelRuntime.mesh_accelerator and on_lora_matched_nothing are overridable. ModelCheckpointManager.hf_export_assets defaults to runtime.model_assets.

.agents/knowledge/architecture.md records trainer/omni/ and omni_callbacks/.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added SeedOmni training and inference workflows for composed, multi-module models, with configurable execution graphs and eager or distributed inference.
    • Added support for text, image, video, and audio conversation data, including preprocessing, media decoding, and saving generated media with associated metadata.
    • Added per-module training settings, checkpoint and Hugging Face exports, step metrics, and optional graph profiling.
    • Added inference options for audio and video inputs and separate multimedia decoding settings.
    • Added configuration for applying distributed wrapping at the module or composed-model level.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved pretrained weight loading for frozen and buffer-only modules, and training-state restoration when environment metrics are unavailable.
    • Improved metric reporting when training ranks produce different module losses.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded the trainer module map to describe SeedOmni trainers, inferencers, and callbacks.

The accelerated layer over OmniModel: one ModuleRuntime per graph module
(build, parallelize, weight load, freeze/LoRA, optimizer, checkpoint,
grad clip, own ParallelState) and an OmniModelRuntime that composes them
and drives the training DAG / generation FSM.

Ships the pieces the runtime needs and nothing else: OmniArguments and the
launcher-to-runtime resolution, per-module checkpoint manager, graph
profiler, a composed fsdp_scope='model' wrap, and the per-module grad clip.
Module mixins (metric meter, offline encoding, embedding parallel), the
trainer, the inferencer and the omni callbacks land separately.
… configs

Add fake_model launcher YAMLs (train/infer module overlays, launcher-style
generation FSMs) and retarget the omni module / accelerator argument
resolution tests onto them, so arg resolution is covered without depending
on a real model's configs.
…checkpoint sidecars

- Add OMNI_ACCELERATED_MODEL_REGISTRY; get_model_class prefers a module's
accelerated class so build_foundation_model (the training / FSDP path)
gets the training hooks, while eager inference keeps the plain class.
- Register accelerated fake_module_a / fake_module_b with minimal
pre/post-forward training hooks (a loss on module b) for smoke tests.
- Split OmniConfig.load_checkpoint_sidecars out of from_pretrained so a
config built from runtime args (to_hf_config) can still pick up the
per-module configs and graphs saved beside a checkpoint.
Port the seedomni data transform, its multimodal preprocess utilities and
SeedOmniCollator, which batches conversations through
OmniProcessor.preprocess_batch. The offline-cache transform is left out.
… VeOmni

Add OmniTrainer and OmniInferencer, the orchestrators over
OmniModelRuntime, with tasks/omni/{train,infer}_omni.py as entry points.
No environ meter and no offline cache yet (offline_cache is rejected).

- OmniTrainer: build the omni model, per-module optimizers and schedulers
behind MultiOptimizer / MultiLRScheduler, the SeedOmni dataloader, and
the step loop with grad-accum reshard cascading and omni_clip_grad_norm.
- Callbacks (omni_callbacks/): per-module DCP and HF export, root model
assets, step metrics for tqdm / wandb, graph profile. Resume state goes
through the shared GlobalStateCallback, so omni checkpoints carry the
manifest and per-rank cursors that load_path=auto relies on; the
  environ meter becomes optional there.
- TrainerState.stage records the current hook so runtimes can tell
  step_end saves from epoch_end / train_end ones.
- HF export dedupe moves from ModuleRuntime to OmniModuleHfCallback with
its own counter: ModuleRuntime compared against the DCP counter, so a
final step that also saved DCP skipped its train_end HF export.
- OmniInferencer eager mode loads per-module configs via
  load_checkpoint_sidecars before OmniModel.from_pretrained.
- configs/seed_omni/fake_model/train/base.yaml plus CPU unit tests and
launch tests (eager inference on CPU; train / resume / FSDP inference
  gated on two CUDA devices).
ModelCheckpointManager and the resume log read runtime.train_args, but
ModuleRuntime stored them as self.train, so the lookup fell through to the
wrapped nn.Module and every trainable module crashed while building its
checkpoint manager. The class attribute also shadowed the base train().
Each node loss is a mean over its micro-batch, and forward_backward_step
backpropagated it unscaled, so accumulated gradients (and the clipped
grad norm) grew with the number of micro-batches. Scale the backward by
1 / num_micro_steps; the logged loss is unchanged.
… does

- OmniModel.forward takes node_runner again. It discarded extra kwargs,
so the TrainNodeRunner OmniModelRuntime passes (wrapper unwrap,
per-module ParallelState scope, graph profiling) never ran.
- OmniModelRuntime.generate called OmniModel._append_generated, which
the omni core no longer has; any distributed inference that produced an
artefact raised. It now drains through _collect_generated after every
node, as OmniModel.generate does, so a later node in one body pass no
longer overwrites an earlier node's artefact.
- execute_generation_node runs pre_generate / post_generate around the
endpoint, matching the eager generation path.
…g loaded

A module is only ever loaded through the composed model, but ModuleRuntime
read its own config.json: the eager path called cls.from_pretrained(path)
with no config, and the build path passed the path to
build_foundation_model. OmniModelRuntime now loads the module configs once
through OmniConfig.load_checkpoint_sidecars and hands each runtime its
config as module_config; model_config overwrites are already applied
there, and model_path is read only for the weights.
…delRuntime

OmniModel holds PretrainedOmniModules, but from_model_runtime handed it
each ModuleRuntime's model, which is a DDP or LoRA wrapper when the module
runs under one, so composing a DDP module raised. OmniModel now gets
ModuleRuntime.omni_module, the bare module, and OmniModelRuntime calls
each module through its runtime's model for train nodes, generation and
export, so DDP still runs its own forward and syncs gradients.

Avoid the module-scope model import from veomni.data.

The SeedOmni data modules import veomni.models.seed_omni.utils.conversation at module scope. This makes every import veomni.data initialize the model package and its SeedOmni processing stack. The reverse import reaches a data submodule but does not create the claimed import cycle. Move the shared definitions to a dependency-free module or import them lazily inside the data functions.

@Coach257 Coach257 changed the title [omni, model, trainer, data] feat: add seedomni v2 runtime, trainer and data path [omni, model, trainer, data] feat: add seedomni runtime, trainer and data path Sep 24, 2026
This PR ships no packed path. Remove the packed launcher overlay and its
test, the unused train.pad_to_length field (SeedOmniCollator never pads),
and the comments that described packing as part of the collator.

veomni/arguments/__init__.py goes back to main. The lazy __getattr__ only
existed so `from veomni.arguments import OmniArguments` worked without
making every single-model `parse_args` import load seed_omni; importing
from veomni.arguments.omni_arguments_types / omni_parser directly gets the
same isolation without a package-level shim.

Old launcher keys need no special error; an unknown key already fails
with the list of valid fields.

…e scope

An eager-inference ModuleRuntime never runs setup(), so it has no
ParallelState to enter. The runtime now records that at construction and
_scoped() returns nullcontext() for it, instead of callers asking the
registry whether a state exists. ModuleRuntime.__call__ and
OmniModelRuntime.module_context both go through _scoped(), and the
composed wrap enters `base` directly: it only runs after
setup_distributed registered it. is_parallel_state_registered and
OmniModelRuntime's module_parallel_state_names go away.

… launcher

Both fake modules set supports_gradient_checkpointing = False, but the
launcher inherited the AcceleratorConfig default (enabled) for every
module. Disable it once in base.yaml and drop the per-module override the
distributed-inference overlay carried for fake_module_a only.

Drop the V1 / V2 framing from the comments, docstrings, error messages

… its source timeline

Media items now carry the timeline they were decoded on instead of the rate
the loader was asked for:

- VideoMetadata / AudioMetadata (utils/media_metadata.py) record the source
fps, total frames and kept frame indices, and ride on ConversationItem.meta
rather than inside the payload an encoder overwrites.
- load_video / fetch_videos keep in-video audio on the same VideoInputs item,
capped by the clip's span, and refuse containers without a frame rate.
- fetch_media (utils/media.py) is the single fetch path shared by the training
transform and OmniProcessor request building; infer.mm_configs forwards the
decode knobs, and InferenceRequest gains audios / videos / mm_configs.
- The inferencer saves a generated clip from the item's own metadata and muxes
  its sound into one file.

Accepting eager in FSDPConfig let it reach build_parallelize_model, which
has no unwrapped branch and hands the model to DDP. Only SeedOmni module
inference supports eager, and it returns before this method.
…checkpoint

The fallback read back only the active training graph and filed it under
'default', so a checkpoint with several scenarios lost the others and its
train_type. Read training_graphs and train_type whole, as the generation
fallback already does.
It seeded model_path but stayed in the override, so instantiating the
module arguments rejected it as an unknown key. model_path is the one
spelling; a leftover weights_path now fails as an unknown key up front.
A server that accepts the connection and stalls would block the
DataLoader worker forever and hang the other ranks at the next
collective. Use the same (5, 30) timeout as the audio fetcher; stream=True
did nothing since the body is read at once.

Comment thread veomni/data/seed_omni/utils/media.py Resolved
…sed wrap

OmniModelRuntime wrapped the parent from the top-level scope while each
ModuleRuntime deferred on its own merged overlay, so a module override
could wrap a module twice or leave it on meta. Both now read one rule,
composed_model_owns_wrap, and the composed wrap refuses a module that
did not defer (an eager inference module is loaded unwrapped).
resolve_omni_model rejects that combination up front, before any
module loads its weights.
…ference

With lora_config set the loader maps base keys onto the PEFT layout, but
the non-eager inference build skipped _setup_lora, so the base weights
found no destination and stayed at their init values.
It delegated to an attribute OmniModuleCheckpointManager never defines, so
reading it after a deferred (fsdp_scope='model') build raised. Nothing
read it: every checkpoint path is already nested under module_name.
…odel does

The runtime node runner required pre_forward / post_forward, and the
module iterator skipped anything that is not a BaseMixin, so a native
PretrainedOmniModule (an unregistered model_type, or an eager inference
module) either raised or was never reset / finalized. Treat both hooks
as optional and iterate on PretrainedOmniModule, which owns reset and
finalize.
…mni_model

The flag was assigned in three branches of __init__ from values that
never change afterwards. Derive it as a read-only wrap_omni_model
property instead: False for an eager-inference module, otherwise
whether the top-level accelerator makes the composed OmniModel own the
FSDP wrap.
unwrap_module only forwarded to unwrap_module_chain.
The flag mirrored accelerator.fsdp_config.fsdp_mode == 'eager', which
the generic parallelize step already rejects for training. Read it from
the config instead of storing a copy in __init__.
… arg resolve

_validate_composed_wrap already rejects an eager module under a
top-level fsdp_scope='model' before any weights load. Drop the second
check in OmniModelRuntime._parallelize_composed_model and the is_eager
branch in wrap_omni_model that only existed to feed it, and cover the
arg-level check with a test.
OmniModelRuntime always passes the top-level accelerator, so drop the
Optional default and the None fallbacks in wrap_omni_model and
mesh_accelerator.
…lelize_model hook

No ModuleRuntime subclass overrides it and build_omni_module_runtime
always instantiates ModuleRuntime itself, so the default None branch was
the only one that ran. A model that owns its wrap already declares
build_parallelize_model, which the base honours.
…ni_model_wrap

Only training needs the post-wrap step: the optimizer, checkpoint
manager and recompute scope bind to the DTensor parameters. The
inference branch re-applied eval() and a recompute scope that no
backward uses, so OmniModelRuntime now skips the call for inference and
the method loses its for_inference flag and its wrap_omni_model guard,
which the caller already implies.
A module's sidecars are bound onto the model, so the runtime blanked
model_assets, added collect_hf_export_assets to read them back, and
OmniModuleCheckpointManager overrode hf_export_assets to call it.
Expose them as a read-only model_assets property instead, so the base
checkpoint manager reads runtime.model_assets directly; the
hf_export_assets indirection and both overrides go away.
ModuleRuntime.save_model_assets still refuses, since the assets
directory belongs to the composed root.
…odel_assets

save_module_assets re-derived the same config + processor/tokenizer set
that ModuleRuntime.model_assets returns. OmniModelRuntime.save_pretrained
now hands each module's model_assets to save_module_subdirectory, which
writes them with veomni.models.save_model_assets, so the list of a
module's sidecars is defined once.
…op copies of OmniModel methods

_module_to_call is OmniModel.get_module returning the runtime's wrapper,
so give it the same name. OmniModelRuntime.reset and named_omni_modules
repeated OmniModel's line for line (OmniModel already holds the bare
modules, so unwrapping them was a no-op); drop both and let __getattr__
forward, along with the iter_named_omni_modules helper they used.
…t__s

accelerated/__init__.py now imports from .omni_model / .omni_module /
.utils instead of reaching into their modules, and each subpackage
__init__ exports its config and runtime. Drop the unused
hf_module_model_config re-export and the outdated 'import the runtime
explicitly to stay cheap' docstrings (the package already loaded it).
…pointManager

The base manager now builds paths only down to the step directory and
passes no module to the checkpointer. OmniModuleCheckpointManager owns
the module level: it overrides save_dir / weights_dir / hf_export_dir /
lora_export_dir / assets_dir and adds module= through the new
_checkpointer_kwargs() hook. module_name becomes a property read off
the runtime instead of a base-class attribute.
…metadata

__repr__ now puts value and each meta entry on its own line, with a blank
line on either side so a printed conversation list reads one block per
item. Meta values go through the same formatter as value: VideoMetadata /
AudioMetadata dataclasses print their set fields, scalars print as
themselves, and long sequences such as frames_indices keep head and tail.
…heckpointCallback

OmniRootAssetsCallback, OmniModuleDcpCallback and OmniModuleHfCallback
re-implemented CheckpointCallback against the same trainer methods. The
only difference was carrying the save stage on TrainerState.stage, which
in turn moved the epoch-end DCP dedupe into ModuleRuntime.save_dcp and
made OmniModuleCheckpointManager read the stage back off the state.

OmniTrainer now registers CheckpointCallback, and save_hf_or_lora takes
and forwards stage through OmniModelRuntime and ModuleRuntime like every
other runtime. TrainerState.stage, the runtime-side dedupe and the
manager override are gone.
tests/seed_omni/ was one flat directory of 18 files. Split it by the layer
under test: model/ (eager OmniModel, OmniConfig, graphs, processor,
convert), media/ (request decode, video/audio metadata), arguments/
(parser and launcher arg resolution), runtime/ (ModuleRuntime,
OmniModelRuntime), trainer/ (OmniTrainer, OmniInferencer, step metrics
callback) and e2e/ (torchrun launches). Files drop the redundant omni_
prefix, and the runtime-only cases in test_omni_trainer.py move to the
runtime tests. CI already runs tests/seed_omni recursively.
…ith is_dummy

source tied an item to the module that owns it, which cannot hold once
modules are composed freely. Which encoder takes an item is now decided
by type / role / meta tags alone, and the sources= filter is gone from
iter_desired_items, get_tail_output_item and collect_desired_values.

role is only user or assistant. An FSDP placeholder is flagged by the
new is_dummy field and keeps the role and tags of the items it stands in
for, so an encoder selects both with one filter; the is_dummy() helper
is replaced by the field.

Merge szl.omniv2-1065-offline-encoding-mixin-v1 at 90ba56e, the head of
#1211. The branch sits on main after #1235, so this also
brings in #1204, #1221 and #1169 from main.

omniv2 already contains #1235 through its unsquashed 1064 branch (083161d),
whose tree matches the squash for every SeedOmni file. The merge was therefore
resolved against 083161d instead of the true merge base: only the changes
in 083161d..90ba56e are applied. Merging from the old base would have
re-added code that omniv2 deleted after the 1064 merge (e.g.
ConversationItem.source) without a conflict.

Conflict resolution:
- mixins/offline_encoding_mixin.py: take #1211. cache_mode becomes a
constructor kwarg kept on the instance; derive_cache_mode, patch_config,
RUNTIME_CONFIG_KEYS and the partial-checkpoint hooks are gone. omniv2's
callers are ported in the next commit.
- seed_omni/__init__.py, mixins/__init__.py: keep omniv2, which also exports
MetricMeterMixin; the OfflineEncodingMixin export is the same on both sides.
