[ops] test: cover chunk CE with activation offload and checkpointing - #1004
Current main already contains the chunk-CE saved-tensor-hook fix in the VeomniOp loss registry. This PR now keeps only regression coverage for the registered chunk_loss backend: synchronous activation offload, non-reentrant checkpointing, frozen inputs/head, BF16/FP32, and all-ignored targets. It does not restore the removed OpSlot API or add allocator-cache controls.
Validation: 61 CPU tests passed across the CE and offload suites; 39 hardware-specific cases were skipped locally. On Ascend 910B2C, the exact head ccdf01990b6506960317c953da2635acfb143522 passed all 32/32 NPU chunk-loss/offload/observer cases, with no skips. This is a single-device unit gate, not full-model training or checkpoint recovery; public CI approval remains separate. Locked Ruff quality checks pass.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Added coverage for chunked loss behavior with activation offloading on CPU and available NPU devices, including checks for loss and gradient consistency across supported configurations.
Rebased replacement for closed #964 (fork force-push of a rebased tip is blocked by the ByteDance-author pre-receive hook, so the head branch had to be recreated).

Review summary — approve (with two non-blocking notes)
Baseline: main@29e65e1c89a5, ahead 1, behind 0 (up to date, no rebase needed).
This is the recreated version of the closed #964; the core change is unchanged and still holds up.
1. Does it solve a real problem?
Yes. torch.func.grad_and_value unconditionally rejects an active saved_tensors_hooks, so cross_entropy_loss_implementation: chunk_loss / npu combined with offload_config.enable_activation failed closed. Replacing the transform with an explicit torch.enable_grad() + torch.autograd.grad VJP over detached leaves is first-order equivalent to what the custom backward already stored, and the nested identity saved_tensors_hooks correctly scopes the short-lived per-chunk CE graph on-device while leaving the long-lived ctx.save_for_backward(grad_inputs, grad_weight) tensors under the outer offload hook. Keeping the vocab-sized FP32 logits out of the CPU offload path is the right call — they are differentiated immediately, so offloading them would be pure transfer cost.
2. Comments / docs / tests
Complete. The in-code comments explain why (transform incompatibility, hook scoping, why the del of the loop-local names precedes the next iteration's RHS, why the cache release sits after ChunkLoss.apply rather than inside forward). Both docs/usage/arguments.md and docs/design/kernel_selection.md document the new cross_entropy_loss_release_cache field, including the throughput trade-off and the fact that it is a no-op for eager/liger_kernel. The new test file is genuinely load-bearing rather than tautological: it asserts numerical parity of loss and both gradients against an unchunked reference, pins the exact hook-call count ({"pack": 2, "unpack": 2}) that proves the scoping claim, exercises the real custom_save_on_cpu hook, and covers the ordering contract (synchronize before empty_cache, and cleanup strictly after the two outer packs).
3. Cleanliness / conflicts with main
Clean and consistent with the repo's conventions. Two notes, neither blocking:
Two resolution sites for release_cache._chunk_loss_causal_factory binds the value into a partial at OpSlot-factory time, while _chunk_loss_dispatch re-resolves lazily from get_ops_config() when the keyword is None. Both read the same field and veomni/ops/__init__.py:91 calls set_ops_config before install_loss_mapping, so the two agree today — but a later set_ops_config would be picked up by the LOSS_MAPPING path and silently ignored by the already-bound OpSlot partial. A short comment naming the OpSlot binding as the snapshot point would prevent a confusing bug report later.
release_cache is silently inert on the return_log_probs / top-k-distill branches of _chunk_loss_dispatch, which return before reaching chunk_loss_function. The docs say the flag "only affects chunk_loss/npu", which reads as if it applies to all of that implementation's paths.
Coordination:#943 also edits veomni/ops/kernels/cross_entropy/chunk_loss.py (hoisting the num_items_in_batch denominator around the loss_kwargs_chunks construction, ~line 127). The hunks do not currently textually overlap with this PR's, but whichever lands second should re-run tests/ops/test_chunk_loss.py and tests/ops/test_chunk_loss_saved_tensor_hooks.py together.
Verdict: approve.

…tivation offload
Replace torch.func chunk-loss VJP with first-order autograd.grad so
saved-tensor hooks from activation offload can stay active. Keep the
short-lived CE graph on device, pack only long-lived precomputed grads,
and add an opt-in release_cache knob for memory-constrained profiles.
Resolve release_cache lazily in the dispatch shim (OpSlot + LOSS_MAPPING),
and honor it on return_log_probs / top-k distillation paths as well.
Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
Addressed the two non-blocking Cursor review notes:
Lazy release_cache: _chunk_loss_causal_factory now returns bare _chunk_loss_dispatch (no partial snapshot), so OpSlot and LOSS_MAPPING both resolve config lazily and keep a readable kernel name.
release_cache on log-probs / distill: dispatch now runs _release_accelerator_cache after those chunked helpers return; docs/help text updated accordingly. Also added the design note that identity hooks keep vocab logits on-device and release_cache is the mitigation.
@Coach257 ready for re-review / merge when convenient.
…nnel loss
Integrate ByteDance-Seed#1004 saved-tensor-hook compatible chunk CE on top of ByteDance-Seed#1005/ByteDance-Seed#1006
channel-loss observation, preserving per-token observer hooks and opt-in
release_cache cleanup.

Exercise the production wrapper on an accelerator.
The test uses CPU tensors, so custom_save_on_cpu does not exercise accelerator-to-CPU packing or unpacking. Add a CUDA- or NPU-gated case that uses the actual hook, checks CPU packing of the saved gradients, and compares loss and gradients with an independent F.linear/F.cross_entropy reference. The current reference also calls chunk_loss_function, so it is not independent.

Heads-up on ordering: #1142 ([BREAKING][ops, model] refactor: replace OpSlot with VeomniOp) is planned to land before this PR, so please rebase onto main after it merges and build the kernel changes here on the new op registry.
Every kernel is a row registered with register_op(op, variant, impl, ..., requirement=..., requires=(...)), keyed by (op, variant, impl, device). The device is chosen with GpuKernelRequirement / NpuKernelRequirement / MluKernelRequirement.
Modeling code holds a handle: VeomniOp(op, variant, resolve_op_impl("<field>_implementation")). It does not read config fields or bind slots.
Kernels live under veomni/ops/kernels/<op>/<variant>/<impl>.py, with the rows in veomni/ops/kernels/<op>/__init__.py. Many files moved.
veomni/ops/kernels/cross_entropy/chunk_loss.py moved to veomni/ops/kernels/loss/cross_entropy_loss/standard/chunk_loss.py (row cross_entropy_loss/standard/chunk_loss).
The dispatch in veomni/ops/kernels/cross_entropy/__init__.py is replaced by register_op rows in veomni/ops/kernels/loss/__init__.py. Models reach it through ForCausalLMLoss with a VeomniOp.
tests/ops/test_chunk_loss.py is now tests/ops/loss/test_cross_entropy_loss.py.
Caveat: cache release can run without an accelerator-hook boundary in the evaluation branch.
The comment at Lines 198-203 says the cleanup follows the outer saved-tensor pack. In the evaluation branch no pack occurs, so the sync and empty_cache only free the chunk working set. This is harmless and stays opt-in. Update the comment to say so, or skip it.

[ops, dist, config, docs, ci] fix: make chunk loss compatible with activation offload
[ops] test: cover chunk CE with activation offload and checkpointing
Oct 20, 2026
@Coach257 This is now ported to current main after #1142. The obsolete OpSlot production patch has been removed; this PR is regression coverage for the current VeomniOp chunk-loss path, including saved-tensor CPU offload with non-reentrant checkpointing. The short final chunk is explicitly large enough to exercise offload. Current head: 2637106bbf9cf10314b5ba7312f6b715b7fd3e1a. Targeted CPU coverage passes; hardware skips are not counted as native verification.
Please review the current head 2637106bbf9cf10314b5ba7312f6b715b7fd3e1a. The paused summary still lists an older commit as last reviewed. Prior inline discussions have been addressed; this requests current-head coverage before merge, without changing source or weakening native CI requirements.
DEVICES lists only cpu and an NPU case that skips without NPU. On a CUDA host, only the CPU case runs. The offload hooks then see only CPU tensors, so the device-placement checks never run on CUDA tensors in GPU CI. The tests/** guidance flags tests that run on one hardware path when the change is device-sensitive, and this test checks device placement.
The offload policy does not gate on device. pack_to_cpu offloads any tensor above the size threshold through tensor.cpu(), and unpack_from_cpu moves it back with tensor.to(device, ...). A CUDA case therefore reaches the existing offloaded and restored assertions with CUDA tensors. IS_CUDA_AVAILABLE already exists for the skip marker.

Supplemental native test evidence for head a5a37037aed2548dcdc70f08ebf480595d4e5639: on Ascend 910B2C, the focused chunk-CE/activation-offload test suite completed 48 passed, 0 skipped. The final test fixture uses deterministic reduction and a single-threaded CPU reference, restoring those settings afterwards; the tested comparisons retain rtol=0, atol=0. This changes test determinism, not the training algorithm.
This is test-scoped evidence, not full-model training or a claim that public NPU CI has completed. The public CI still needs its own approval/execution.
@Coach257 Current head ccdf01990b6506960317c953da2635acfb143522 is approved and GitHub reports CLEAN; the current GPU and NPU unit/e2e workflows have succeeded. The exact head also has the previously recorded 32/32 Ascend chunk-loss/offload unit result. It looks ready to merge when convenient. Thank you.
