WalkthroughThe change adds opt-in early UUID lookups for multimodal processor-cache entries. Request fields, chat parameters, synchronous and asynchronous HF rendering, media parsing, tests, and documentation now support skipping URL loading for cached images and videos. ChangesEarly UUID cache lookups

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Keep the media URL available after an early UUID cache hit.
BaseMultiModalProcessorCache.is_cached_item() only checks membership and does not update eviction order. The image and video parsers then set the URL to None, while get_and_update() performs a second lookup with the same UUID hash. If eviction occurs between these operations, no cached media or URL fallback remains, and the request can fail. Retain the URL for a miss fallback or pin the entry until processing completes.

IDOR (CWE-639): Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key (IDOR)
Reachability: External · Exploitability: Difficult
Do not treat UUID-authoritative hits as an authorization boundary.
The cache intentionally uses uuid as the media identity and ignores the URL on a hit. In a shared server, a caller who obtains another tenant’s UUID can receive model output derived from that tenant’s media. Bind cache keys to the tenant or authorize UUID access. Otherwise, require cryptographically random tenant-unique UUIDs and protect them as bearer secrets. cache_salt alone does not isolate the processor cache.

Enforce tenant isolation for early UUID lookups.
The API accepts caller-provided UUIDs, and the UUID is used as the cache identity without tenant or authorization context. In a multi-tenant deployment, a caller who knows another tenant’s UUID can select that tenant’s cached media when VLLM_EARLY_UUID_LOOKUPS=1. Hmmm, I feel it's bad to couple mm processor cache with frontend MultiModalItemTracker, especially we're planning to connect mm processor cache with mooncake.

Right, I see that mixing up different layers is a problem. Also, there are many tricky edge cases where the early lookup succeeds for some media items, while failing for others. Maybe we could fix both, by not doing an early lookup, but just probing the renderer with all empty URLs when some restrictive conditions are satisfied. Either all media is in the processor cache, and we can skip video loading or we process everything normally. Something like: mm_items # a list of url, uuid , modality named tuples
# Try to skip all media loading/decoding, by jumping straight to UUID based cache lookups
if all(mm_items.uuid is not None) and any(mm_items.url is not None):
try:
mm_no_load_items = [(None, uuid, modality) for (url, uuid, modality) in mm_items]
return renderer.render_chat([with_media(messages, mm_no_load_items)])
except MultiModalProcessorCacheMissError:
pass
# Load all data with provided URLs
return renderer.render_chat([with_media(messages, mm_items)])This would still be equally as useful for cases with 1 multimodal input. |

Purpose
Video decoding can take hundreds of miliseconds for some video backends.
This PR adds a opt-in
VLLM_EARLY_UUID_LOOKUPSvariable which performs a UUID-based lookup of the multi-modal cache for videos and images. On a hit, the url is switched to None and loading + decoding are skipped. On a miss, everything proceeds as it would.Current Flaw: The lookup doesn't reserve the multi-modal cache entry. A race condition, where that entry is evicted before it is loaded is possible. Happy to hear feedback on how to deal with that best.
Opt out is possible by adding
