Purpose

One part of the RL CI Matrix for vLLM proposed by #45585. This PR adds end-to-end tests for the routed-experts capture-and-replay API (--enable-return-routed-experts) used for RL rollout replay, covering:

  • Capture correctness on both /v1/completions and /v1/chat/completions: decoded shape (num_forwarded_tokens, num_layers, top_k), valid expert IDs, rows == prompt + completion - 1 (the last sampled token has no routing), len(token_ids) == completion_tokens, and independence from return_token_ids
  • Replay identity: deterministic reruns reproduce tokens and routing exactly; the second run prefix-cache-hits the first run's blocks, so slot-buffer recovery is compared against live capture
  • Batch isolation: routing for a prompt is identical alone vs. in a concurrent mixed-length batch; duplicate prompts in one batch agree exactly
  • Scenario matrix: V1 and V2 (MRV2) model runners x eager and -O2 CUDA graphs, plus the flashinfer_trtllm monolithic MoE kernel path

The single-scenario test previously at tests/entrypoints/openai/test_return_routed_experts.py is consolidated into
tests/entrypoints/serve/dev/rlhf/consistency/test_routed_experts.py.

The tests reuse the shared server() harness from the rlhf conftest, which is extended with a required model parameter; --enforce-eager and --enable-sleep-mode are removed from the shared base args and passed by each test module instead (test_pause_resume.py keeps its previous behavior, with its model constant moved into the module). A SERVED_MODEL_NAME constant names the model on the HTTP API, so request-side helpers share it instead of hardcoding. The MoE model is overridable via VLLM_TEST_MOE_MODEL for offline/local checkpoints, and a minimal inline chat template is passed via --chat-template because tiny-mixtral's tokenizer defines none (required by transformers >=
4.44).

Test Plan

Test Matrix

Priority Test Case Main Coverage
P0 test_capture_shape_and_range Shape/range, token_ids/completion alignment on completions and chat; return_token_ids on/off
P0 test_replay_identity Deterministic rerun (slot-buffer recovery via prefix cache)
P0 test_batch_isolation Routing identical alone vs. concurrent mixed-length batch; duplicate prompts agree

Scenario Matrix (module-scoped parametrized server fixture, 5 startups total)

Server config Runner Exec mode MoE kernel
v1-eager V1 eager (--enforce-eager via extra_args) modular (Triton, default)
v1-graph V1 -O2 CUDA graphs (vLLM default) modular
v1-monolithic-eager V1 eager monolithic (flashinfer_trtllm); skipped unless flashinfer TRTLLM kernels are available on Blackwell (SM100)
mrv2-eager MRV2 (VLLM_USE_V2_MODEL_RUNNER=1) eager modular
mrv2-graph MRV2 -O2 CUDA graphs modular

Speed & Stability

  • Module-scoped server fixture: each configuration starts one server reused by all three tests (5 startups for the whole module), each on its own port via get_open_port() since the module-scoped servers coexist.
  • Greedy decoding (temperature=0) + ignore_eos for the identity comparisons keeps reruns byte-identical; determinism does not depend on a server seed.
  • Every response is validated in a single parse path (_parse): shape, expert ID range, forwarded-token row count, and token_ids/completion alignment.
  • The monolithic skipif mirrors TrtLlmBf16Experts._supports_current_device (CUDA + SM100 + has_flashinfer_trtllm_fused_moe()), so unsupported environments skip instead of failing at server startup.

👋 Hi! Thank you for contributing to the vLLM project.

💬 Join our developer Slack at https://slack.vllm.ai to discuss your PR in #pr-reviews, coordinate on features in #feat- channels, or join special interest groups in #sig- channels.

PRs do not trigger a full CI run by default. Reviewers with write access and configured trusted contributors can comment /ci run for upstream CI or /amd-ci run for AMD CI only whenever CI signals are needed.

Once the PR is approved or has the ready label, the PR author can also use the corresponding /ci run, /ci retry, and /ci cancel commands, or their /amd-ci variants. New commits do not start upstream CI automatically.

Implemented the consolidation described in RFC #55421 (follow-up to #45585) and pushed 2a31dc61a457443d83b3d40512c9a59e0dcf626d to this PR branch.

  • Restore the existing single-GPU OpenAI and token-in/token-out frontend tests to their original files.
  • Replace the reduced dummy-model shape-only matrix with a real tiny-Mixtral lifecycle test: exact token/row alignment, integer/range/distinct top-k checks, cached prompt capture reuse, and post-sleep routing/output recovery.
  • Cover MRV1/MRV2 eager plus MRV2 graphs. Preserve TP2/DP2 token-in/token-out capture in a separate four-GPU job, checking complete row alignment there too.
  • This is capture/lifecycle consistency, not training-side routing replay or cross-batch numerical invariance. Model/backend-specific expansion and actual replay remain separate work.

Shared harness and docstring ownership changes are coordinated across #54930, #53541, #51350, #52864 and #52902. The merged pause/resume suite also gets bounded client-thread waits and preserved request exceptions. Product metrics are split into draft #55781.

Validation: final PR files passed Ruff 0.14.0, AST/YAML/diff checks and applicable pre-commit hooks including mypy. The Dockerfile-graph script was run separately with Git Bash on Windows. All six branches were also combined locally without conflicts, with the two/four/four-GPU job assignments checked. Checker + metrics pure-module tests passed together: 11 passed, using source-loaded modules to bypass unavailable Windows package initialization.

Not validated: normal vLLM package collection is blocked locally by missing uvloop; no GPU or model-evaluation runs were performed. The newly configured Linux/GPU lanes still need to run before merge. Routing replay and backend/model expansion remain separate coverage gaps, not claimed by these tests.

AI assistance was used; human review and Linux/GPU validation of the final diff remain required.

Scope correction pushed in edb544c8bc1052998e2288ad04774bb34a71aa4e.

The earlier mainline synchronization accidentally included unrelated changes from a local tracking reference that did not match the PR's actual upstream base. Those changes have now been removed from the final PR diff:

  • tests/kernels/moe/test_b12x.py
  • tests/models/test_initialization.py
  • tests/v1/kv_connector/unit/test_mooncake_store_scheduler.py
  • vllm/distributed/kv_transfer/kv_connector/v1/mooncake/store/scheduler.py
  • vllm/model_executor/layers/fused_moe/oracle/mxfp4.py

I verified the five files against the immutable upstream merge-base 6fbb00b18874e27ba7d7adc0a3b8e93fee763ab1 and then checked GitHub's actual head SHA and Files changed list after pushing: this PR now contains exactly 7 intended files. The RL changes themselves are unchanged. This correction uses an additive cleanup commit; it does not rewrite contributor history.

This corrects the earlier scope-validation claim. No new GPU execution results are claimed.

Fixed in c83723671d by making server_url function-scoped.

The relevant ordering is between the server fixture and vLLM's function-scoped autouse cleanup in tests/conftest.py. With a module-scoped live server, per-test cleanup runs while the RemoteOpenAIServer subprocess still owns GPU memory. With a function-scoped server fixture, its context manager exits first, terminates the process tree, and waits for GPU memory release before global cleanup completes.

This does not increase server startups in the current file: server_url has exactly one consuming test, so the three runner parameters still create exactly three servers. A comment now records the teardown requirement. If this scenario is later split into multiple test functions, sharing one live server would also require an explicit cleanup-ownership design; changing the scope back alone is unsafe.

Validation: the changed file passed the full applicable pre-commit hooks, including Ruff and mypy. GPU execution was not available locally.
