Purpose

Fixes #46737.

Namespace tools are expanded to an internal namespace__tool representation for prompting and parsing, but the Responses API should expose the original tool name expected by clients.

This PR introduces a consistent mapping between the external tool name and the internal namespace-qualified representation throughout the Responses pipeline. The mapping is applied when:

  • expanding namespace tools for prompt generation;
  • parsing model outputs;
  • restoring tool names in Responses API outputs;
  • processing streamed responses;
  • replaying previous function_call history;
  • handling Harmony prompt generation and parsing.

This ensures compatibility with clients (such as Codex) while preserving the existing internal representation.

Test Plan

Run the Responses unit tests:

pytest tests/entrypoints/openai/responses/ -q

The added regression tests cover:

  • namespace tool expansion;
  • restoring tool names in Responses API output;
  • reverse mapping for historical function_call inputs;
  • streaming Responses output;
  • Harmony streaming and non-streaming paths.

Test Result

Completed:

  • ✅ python -m compileall passed.
  • ✅ git diff --check passed.
  • ✅ Added regression tests covering namespace tool mapping.

@zhongjing123, thanks for the PR.

I tested it locally with both Qwen3 and GLM-5.2. It works correctly with Qwen3, but GLM-5.2 is still not working as expected.

The test results are as follows:

Test Qwen3:

# vllm serve /mnt/data2/models/Qwen/Qwen3.5-35B-A3B   --reasoning-parser qwen3 --enable-auto-tool-choice  --tool-call-parser qwen3_coder --port 8000

The reason is that find_tool_properties and find_tool_name in vllm/tool_parsers/utils.py do not search for tools nested inside a namespace. You'll need to update them accordingly to support namespace tools as well.

I think the changes in this file should be moved to vllm/tool_parsers/utils.py.

In addition, find_tool_properties and find_tool_name in vllm/tool_parsers/utils.py need to support namespace tools.

I think these two functions can be updated as follows:

  • In find_tool_name(), detect when tool.type == "namespace" and recursively inspect the nested functions.
  • Construct the internal function name using the existing Responses convention: {namespace}__{nested_tool_name}.
  • find_tool_properties() should also support this internal name and return the nested function's parameters.properties.
  • It would be good to add a regression test as well: use a Responses namespace tool with the GLM-4.7 parser, and have the model output <tool_call>mcp__computer_use__get_app_state.... Assert that it produces:
    FunctionCall(name="mcp__computer_use__get_app_state", arguments='{"app":"Google Chrome"}')
    and then verify that build_response_output_items() maps it back to:
    name="get_app_state" and namespace="mcp__computer_use".

Hi @zhongjing123, the pre-commit checks have failed. Please run:

uv pip install pre-commit>=4.5.1
pre-commit install
pre-commit run --all-files

Then, commit the changes and push to your branch.

For future commits, pre-commit will run automatically on changed files before each commit.

Thanks!

I tested this locally with Qwen3.5 and GLM-5.2, and both are working correctly.

Could you add a corresponding E2E test in tests/entrypoints/openai/responses/test_function_call.py? You can submit a new PR to do this.
