Problem

The api app in the examples/kitchen-sink example crashes with EADDRINUSE: address already in use every time a source file is saved during development.

Root cause: The dev script tsdown --watch --onSuccess "node dist/index.cjs" spawns a new node process on each rebuild via a shell (shell: true), but does not kill the process tree of the previous child. The orphaned Express server continues holding port 5001, so the next rebuild fails when the new server tries to bind the same port.

Fix

Two changes to examples/kitchen-sink/apps/api:

package.json — Replace the dev script with tsx watch src/index.ts and add tsx as a devDependency. tsx watch runs TypeScript source directly and natively manages the child process lifecycle: it kills the previous process tree before restarting on file changes. This matches the dev-server pattern used by the other apps in the example (Next.js, Vite, Remix all have built-in process management).
src/server.ts — Change the named imports of body-parser to a default import with destructuring. body-parser is a pure CJS package with no exports field, so its named exports are unavailable when loaded as ESM by tsx. This import style is the standard ESM best practice for CJS interop.

Verification

Dev server starts and responds on port 5001
Multiple sequential file saves with health checks between each — no EADDRINUSE
Existing Jest tests pass (2/2)
Production build (tsdown) succeeds
ESLint passes with zero warnings
TypeScript type-check passes

Replace tsdown --watch --onSuccess with tsx watch for the api dev script. tsdown's onSuccess hook spawns a new node process via shell but fails to kill the process tree on rebuild, leaving orphaned Express servers that hold the port open and cause EADDRINUSE on subsequent saves. tsx watch directly runs TypeScript source and properly manages the child process lifecycle, killing the previous process before restarting on file changes. Also fixes CJS/ESM interop in server.ts by using default imports for the pure-CJS body-parser package.
