in the component resolver so unresolved spreads do not discard known members
that later explicit writes determine; preserve `component: 'x-tabs'` through the

to check members.shadowed before passing members.properties.component to
tagFromNode. When a later unreadable spread could override component, report
that spread instead of returning the earlier tag, so buildDocgenPayload does not
document the wrong element.

A literal component written after a spread the story file cannot read is certain at runtime, so the resolver now reads it even when it sits inside a local meta object that the default export spreads, including through nested local spreads. A literal component written before an unreadable spread is no longer accepted, because that spread may override it, and the resolver reports the spread as unresolvable-meta-spread instead.

resolveObjectMembersmarkscomponentas shadowed when that key follows the literal, but the final fallback ignores the mark and returns the earlier tag. Docgen can therefore use the wrong custom-element metadata.Suggested fix

`resolve-component.ts` in the web-components docgen conflicted. Upstream's storybookjs#36812 (julien/wc-readlocalmeta) changed it, in 92b8038 and d5e22c7, against the Babel-era file. This branch ports that file to ESTree. The conflict keeps the branch's file and ports Julien's behaviour onto it. `meta.component` is now read through spreads of object literals declared in the story file, also nested ones. A literal component written after a spread the file cannot read still wins. A spread that cannot be read, and may override the component, is reported as the new `unresolvable-meta-spread` reason. The Babel calls map to the ESTree helpers: - `{ program, filePath }` becomes `{ editor: csf._editor, filePath }` - `sourceOf(spread)` becomes `oneLineTextOf(spread)`, the text the ESTree `resolveObjectMembers` lists in `unresolved` - `scope.getBinding(name).path.node` becomes `editor.scopes.program.bindings.get(name).node` The other two docgen files the PR touched, `build-docgen.ts` and `build-docgen.test.ts`, merged cleanly. They use no Babel API. Julien's tests in `resolve-component.test.ts` and `build-docgen.test.ts` merged cleanly and pass unchanged, as does storybookjs#36806's `bind-args` change. What I did
export default { ...meta }give no ArgTypes and no explanation.Seen on during QA on adobe/spectrum-web-components gen2 Tabs, where the CLI doc tool listed stories but no API descirption.
The Web Components docgen resolver follows spreads of objects declared in the story file when reading
meta.component, with later properties winning as in JS.A spread it cannot follow produces an
unresolvable-meta-spreaderror in the docgen payload, naming the spread and suggesting a literalcomponenton the default export.Example
Before: empty ArgTypes, no error in the components manifest.
After: ArgTypes and
apiDescriptionfrom theswc-tabsdeclaration.Before: same silent empty result.
After: the docs page and the manifest show
unresolvable-meta-spread: "meta.componentcould not be read because...metais not a local object literal. Setcomponent: '<tag-name>'on the default export."Manual test
///
lit-vitesandbox with server docgen on, change a story file toconst meta = { component: 'demo-button' }; export default { ...meta };.metato another file and import it: the components manifest entry and the docs page show theunresolvable-meta-spreaderror.Checklist for Contributors
Testing
The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:
Manual testing
yarn task --task sandbox --start-from auto --template lit-vite/default-ts.const meta = { title: 'Example/Button', component: 'demo-button' }; export default { ...meta, tags: ['autodocs'] };.component.metato a separate file and import it: the docs page andstorybook-static/manifests/components.json(afterstorybook buildwithfeatures.componentsManifest: true) show theunresolvable-meta-spreaderror naming...meta.export default { component: 'demo-button', ...imported }: the same error, because the later spread could override the tag.Documentation
