Closes #

What I did

Docgen default render now skips undefined and null args for every key category.
'' still reaches a property, so a story can clear a default, but never sets an attribute, slot, CSS custom property, part or state.

Example:

export const Default = { args: { name: undefined, label: null, placeholder: '' } };

Before:

<my-input name="undefined" label="null"></my-input>

After (placeholder is a reflecting property, so '' is assigned and reflects as an empty attribute):

<my-input placeholder=""></my-input>

Checklist for Contributors

Testing

  1. In a lit-vite sandbox, add a story for a Lit element with @property({ reflect: true }) name and args: { name: undefined }, with no render.
  2. Open the story and inspect the element: no name attribute. Before this change it reads name="undefined".
  3. Change the arg to '': the property is set and the attribute is name="".

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • stories
  • unit tests
  • integration tests
  • end-to-end tests

Walkthrough

bindArgs now skips arguments with undefined or null values. Empty strings continue through the existing binding logic. Tests and the migration note cover the updated behavior.

Changes

Web Components argument binding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Argument value handling
code/renderers/web-components/src/bind-args.ts, code/renderers/web-components/src/bind-args.test.ts, MIGRATION.md
bindArgs skips arguments with undefined or null values before binding. Tests cover declared properties, observed attributes, reflecting properties, unknown keys, and special arguments. The migration note states that empty strings bind to properties.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6c6a6

The migration note could mislead readers about empty-string reflection on properties. The issue is bounded; the PR is otherwise mergeable with a small clarification.

- Line 1554: Update the `bindArgs` migration guidance to distinguish direct
attribute binding from property reflection: an empty string does not set a
directly bound attribute, but may set an attribute when assigned to a reflecting
property. Align the wording with the `name` test fixture.

`resolve-component.ts` in the web-components docgen conflicted.
Upstream's storybookjs#36812 (julien/wc-readlocalmeta) changed it, in
92b8038 and d5e22c7, against the Babel-era file. This branch
ports that file to ESTree.

The conflict keeps the branch's file and ports Julien's behaviour onto
it. `meta.component` is now read through spreads of object literals
declared in the story file, also nested ones. A literal component
written after a spread the file cannot read still wins. A spread that
cannot be read, and may override the component, is reported as the new
`unresolvable-meta-spread` reason.

The Babel calls map to the ESTree helpers:

- `{ program, filePath }` becomes `{ editor: csf._editor, filePath }`
- `sourceOf(spread)` becomes `oneLineTextOf(spread)`, the text the
  ESTree `resolveObjectMembers` lists in `unresolved`
- `scope.getBinding(name).path.node` becomes
  `editor.scopes.program.bindings.get(name).node`

The other two docgen files the PR touched, `build-docgen.ts` and
`build-docgen.test.ts`, merged cleanly. They use no Babel API. Julien's
tests in `resolve-component.test.ts` and `build-docgen.test.ts` merged
cleanly and pass unchanged, as does storybookjs#36806's `bind-args` change.
