What I did

Storybook 11 no longer reads the CSF v1 Story.story bag. That form was deprecated in 6.0. Each field belongs on the story itself, and name on a story function is storyName.

There is no codemod in this PR. The migration note in the 10 → 11 section shows the rewrite, including the cases that are not a static object (a variable, a function call, a spread, or a computed key).

What changed, in reading order:

  • normalizeStory no longer merges story.name, parameters, decorators, args, argTypes, loaders, beforeEach, or afterEach, and no longer warns.
  • composeStory no longer falls back to story.name for the portable-story name.
  • StoryAnnotations.story is removed from the public type.
  • The indexer no longer flattens A.story = { ... } into separate annotations, so tags and play inside that object no longer affect the index.
  • csf-2-to-3 still lifts a static Story.story = { ... } into a CSF 3 object. It used to get that flattening from the indexer, so the expansion now lives in the codemod. Its existing v1 test is unchanged. Dynamic values are still left alone.

CSF 4 meta.story() is a function call, not this assignment, and is untouched.

Testing

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • end-to-end tests

Manual testing

Caution

This section is mandatory for all contributions. If you believe no manual test is necessary, please state so explicitly. Thanks!

No browser pass is required. The removed path is a deprecated annotation bag, and the remaining behavior is covered by unit tests.

  1. yarn vitest run --config code/core/vitest.config.ts code/core/src/preview-api/modules/store/csf/normalizeStory.test.ts code/core/src/csf-tools/CsfFile.test.ts code/core/src/csf/story.test.ts code/core/src/preview-api/modules/store/csf/portable-stories.test.ts — story names, parameters, and decorators set directly on the story still normalize; the type fixture no longer assigns Story.story.
  2. yarn vitest run --config code/lib/codemod/vitest.config.ts code/lib/codemod/src/transforms/__tests__/csf-2-to-3.test.ts — the v1 case still becomes a CSF 3 object with parameters on the story, not nested under story.
  3. Worth a look while reading the diff: composeStory name order (exportsName, then storyName, then name), and any story that put tags or play only inside Story.story. Those no longer reach the index.

🦋 Canary Release - 🚫 Not run

This PR does not have a canary release associated.

In-repo PRs: add the ci:canary label. Later pushes republish while the label remains.

Fork PRs: the label does nothing (a later push must not auto-publish). A maintainer publishes from this repository with Run workflow and the pr input. branch and sha are optional; if more than one is set, they must be the same commit. The fork author does not need to do anything.

Storybook 11 no longer reads the CSF v1 Story.story bag. Put each field
on the story itself. The CSF 2-to-3 codemod still expands a static bag,
because the indexer used to do that for it.

Walkthrough

Storybook no longer reads annotations nested under Story.story. The CSF 2-to-3 transform lifts identifier-keyed properties from static story objects, and the Storybook 11 migration guide documents the required annotation placement and migration limits.

Changes

CSF story annotation removal

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove nested annotation support
code/core/src/csf-tools/CsfFile.ts, code/core/src/csf-tools/CsfFile.test.ts, code/core/src/csf/story.ts, code/core/src/csf/story.test.ts
The parser stores an object-valued story assignment as one annotation instead of unpacking its properties. StoryAnnotations no longer declares a nested story property. Tests for those prior behaviors are removed.
Normalize top-level annotations
code/core/src/preview-api/modules/store/csf/normalizeStory.ts, code/core/src/preview-api/modules/store/csf/normalizeStory.test.ts, code/core/src/preview-api/modules/store/csf/portable-stories.ts
normalizeStory uses top-level annotation values and name fallbacks. composeStory no longer uses a nested story name. Tests for merging legacy annotations are removed.
Update migration tooling and guide
code/lib/codemod/src/transforms/csf-2-to-3.ts, MIGRATION.md
The CSF 2-to-3 transform lifts identifier-keyed properties from a static story object. The migration guide documents the change, codemod limits, and removal of csf-hoist-story-annotations.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 59b16

Storybook 11 stops reading annotations nested under Story.story. The migration codemod can leave some of these annotation bags only partly migrated without reporting it, so stories may lose parameters, args, or decorators after upgrading. Make the codemod skip and report unsupported bags before merging.
