Core: Stop warning on process ancestry cycles - #36643
Conversation
Windows reuses PIDs and does not reparent orphans, so a dead parent's PID can point back into the ancestry chain. The walk already stops there; the console.warn only leaked "Detected cycle in process tree" onto the CLI's stderr. That broke the cli help-command stderr assertion on the Windows daily unit job, and the failing console.warn (vitest setup) made the PreflightCheckCommand ancestry test skip the specifier lookup. Also stub getProcessAncestry in the PreflightCheckCommand test so it no longer shells out to the host's real process tree. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe visited-PID check still stops ancestry traversal but no longer logs a warning. The tests cover a self-referencing POSIX process and a two-process Windows cycle. The Storybook preflight test mocks process ancestry. ChangesProcess ancestry cycle handling

The ancestry assertion passes even if
walkAncestrystarts callingconsole.warnagain. Add a warning spy and assert that the cycle produces no warning. Set up and restore the spy in the test lifecycle.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

What I did
The
tests-unit--windowsjob in thedaily-generatedworkflow fails every night onnext(for example job 2213274). Two tests fail:@storybook/clitest/default/cli.test.cjs > help command: stderr isDetected cycle in process tree at PID 6880instead of empty.create-storybookPreflightCheckCommand.test.ts > should fill storybookVersionSpecifier from process ancestry when it is unset:resolveStorybookVersionSpecifieris never called. Both have the same cause. Windows reuses PIDs and does not reparent orphan processes, so the
ParentProcessIdof a process whose parent has exited can point to a PID that now belongs to a process further down the chain.walkAncestryinprocess-ancestry.tsalready stops when it sees a PID twice, but it also callsconsole.warn. On the CLI this ends up on the user's stderr. In unit tests,code/vitest-setup.tsturns anyconsole.warninto a thrown assertion error.PreflightCheckCommandcatches that error around the ancestry lookup, so the version specifier is never resolved.Changes:
walkAncestrystops on a cycle without a warning.PreflightCheckCommand.test.tsstubsgetProcessAncestry, so the test no longer runswmic/psagainst the real process tree of the CI machine.Checklist for Contributors
Testing
The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:
Manual testing
tests-unit--windowspasses on this PR. Theci:dailylabel is set so the job runs.node_modules/.bin/vitest run --config vitest.config.ts src/common/utils/process-ancestry.test.tsfromcode/core. All 6 tests pass. If you revert the change inprocess-ancestry.ts, the cycle test fails withUnexpected console.warn call.node_modules/.bin/vitest run --config vitest.config.ts src/commands/PreflightCheckCommand.test.tsfromcode/lib/create-storybook(after compilingcore). All 20 tests pass.Documentation
