…eads it When the tools CLI attaches to a dev server it is a follower for the status store. The changed handler read the store in the tick that created it, before the leader had answered, so it always saw the initial empty state. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to A slow initial sync can leave stories.changed unusable in a long-lived attached host until it is restarted. The impact is limited and recoverable, but the SDK workflow has a timeout-recovery gap. ✨ Finishing Touches 💡 1🛠️ Fix failing CI checks 💡

Auto mode falls back to local silently when no instance is found, and local mode would pass the assertion without the fix. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

code/core/src/core-server/stores/status.ts:30-35
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winMake follower sync recoverable after a timeout.
If the leader responds after the one-second timeout,
UniversalStorerejects the readiness promise and ignores the late response. The cached follower then causes every laterstories.changedcall in the same attached runtime to reject, even after the dev server responds. Make a later call start a fresh sync, and keep it from returning statuses until that sync completes.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

The new test covers a timeout followed by a successful synchronized read through the same attached-tools module. I inspected the test but did not run it. Closes SB-2225
What I did
Fixed
storybook tools stories changedso it reports changed stories when it runs against a running dev server. Before: with a dev server running, the command always printed "No new, modified, or related stories detected.", even right after editing a story file. Connecting to a running dev server is the CLI's default, so agents calling
stories changedthrough the CLI got an empty answer. The MCP tool was fine. After: the command lists the changed stories.
Why it happened
The dev server owns the list of story statuses. The CLI's copy starts empty and is filled by asking the dev server the first time it is read.
stories changedread its copy before the answer had arrived, so it always saw an empty list. The fix
stories changednow waits for that answer before reading. The wait is a small new function,getSyncedStatuses()incode/core/src/core-server/stores/status.ts.--no-attach, or none running): unchanged. They own the statuses, so there is nothing to wait for.Known limits
stories changedcall asks the dev server again, so a program that stays connected (one using the tools SDK,createTools) recovers by itself.Checklist for Contributors
Testing
The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:
stories
unit tests
integration tests
end-to-end tests
End-to-end (
code/e2e-internal/tools-attach.spec.ts): editscore/template/stories/names.stories.ts, runs--attach stories changed --jsonagainst the running Storybook, expectscore-names--prefixto be reported as modified, then restores the file. This test fails without the fix.Unit (
code/core/src/core-server/stores/status.test.ts): a dev server store and a CLI store are connected to each other in the test. Covers the normal case, the 1 second timeout, recovery on the next read, and the dev server side.Unit (
definition.test.ts): guards existing behaviour that this fix relies on: a failed status read fails the command instead of reporting zero changes.Manual testing
yarn nx run-many -t compilecd code && yarn storybook:ui, and wait until Storybook runs on port 6006.code/core/template/stories/names.stories.ts.cd code && node core/dist/bin/dispatcher.js tools stories changed.core-names--prefixandcore-names--prefix-and-nameunder "Modified stories". Before this change the output was "No new, modified, or related stories detected."Documentation
