The skills repo is the install source for Vercel's skills CLI, so installs count on skills.sh. Say that instead of describing it as a version fix. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A late re-run of an older version after a newer one has synced commits the older skills on top. Document that limit, and that hand-published older minors are not synced, and correct the workflow comment that called an existing tag a no-op. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Derive the branch from the version instead of a second input, archive with a prefix instead of a mkdir, set the committer on the commit only, and print one line after the push instead of two before it. Refuse to sync when the archive holds no skill, so an empty tree can never delete them all. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A re-run of a publish run starts from the commit before the version bump, bumps again and fails on the push, so it never reaches the sync. Document the hand run from the release tag instead, say that init and upgrade are planned to install from the skills repo, say what a second sync of a tagged version does, and add the sync to the emergency release steps. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A stable minor can trigger a second publish run on latest-release, whose branch then holds next. Reading the skills from v<version>, like the hand run, keeps that run a no-op. Document that a failure before the sync step also leaves the version unsynced, give the hand run its own heading, and disable tag and commit signing so the hand run works for maintainers who sign by default. Only the sync step red: sync by hand, not with the skip publish dispatch, which repeats the merge and the force-push. An earlier step red: finish with the dispatch, which syncs too. Point to this from step 7 of How to Release and the table of contents, and make the hand run's preconditions and the ls-remote check literal. Some things that I'm not super happy with, but if you're running out of time, I can accept it as is. I'm not gonna loose sleep over it.
…p token The sync script is now TypeScript run with Node, like the other scripts in scripts/release, so reviewers don't have to read bash. The push uses a short-lived token of the Storybook bot GitHub App, limited to storybookjs/skills and revoked when the job ends, instead of the long-lived SKILLS_SYNC_TOKEN secret. An org admin must give the app access to storybookjs/skills before the next publish. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A hand run with VERSION=v11.0.1 would have pushed the tag vv11.0.1 to the public skills repo. Also clarify RELEASING.md: say what the "skip publish" dispatch is, that the CHANGELOG commit only happens for patch releases, and that a hand run after a failed sync is the one exception to "nobody edits the skills repo". Closes SB-2077
What I did
Every publish now copies the agent skills in
code/lib/claude-plugin/skills/tostorybookjs/skillsand tags themv<version>.Why: #36431 makes
storybook initandstorybook upgradeinstall the skills from that repo, at the tag of the project's Storybook version. Installing from there also gives us install counts on skills.sh.How it works
publish.ymlgets two steps at the very end, after npm publish, the GitHub Release and the merges:storybookjs/skillsand is revoked when the job ends. The app already has access to the skills repo, so nothing has to be set up before merging.scripts/release/sync-skills.ts, which:storybookjs/skills:nextfor a prerelease (11.0.0-alpha.2),mainfor a release (11.0.0,11.0.1);skills/with the skills from the Storybook tagv<version>;v<version>and pushes branch and tag in one atomic push.Today the skills repo holds one hand-made commit on
next, taggedv11.0.0-alpha.1, and an emptymain. Not synced: canaries, 10.6.x patches (this is not backported to
main), and hand-published releases of older minors. When it fails
The steps run last, so a failure cannot block a publish. The run turns red and Discord reports a failed publish, but npm, the GitHub Release and the merges are done.
CONTRIBUTING/RELEASING.md.skip_publish, and on the second publish run that a stable minor or major may start.Reverting this PR is safe: it only stops the sync. Tags already pushed stay.
Merge before 11.0.0
mainin the skills repo is empty. The 11.0.0 publish fills it; without this PR, 11.0.0 ships with no skills to install. After merge, watch the next prerelease publish. It is the first time the bot pushes a real commit and tag (the
storiesskill changed sincev11.0.0-alpha.1); the CI test below only pushed a test branch.Housekeeping: delete the
SKILLS_SYNC_TOKENsecret from theReleaseenvironment. An earlier version of this PR used it; nothing references it now.Evidence
In CI, with the real bot token: a throwaway run created the token with the same step as
publish.yml, ran the sync script with it for a version the skills repo already has (so nothing changed), and pushed and deleted a test branch onstorybookjs/skills.Locally, against a copy of the real skills repo: the sequence under Manual testing below, plus these error cases:
SKILL.mdat the ref → stops before anything is committedv11.0.1→ stops with an errorScript output and resulting history
