Closes #36208

What I did

This PR changes what two telemetry events contain and adds one report. It changes no tool behaviour: same output, same exit codes, same MCP tools. Ships as a 10.6.1 patch.

If you only read one section, read Telemetry changes. The How section at the end is for the code reviewer.

Telemetry changes

1. tools-command (CLI and Node SDK): one record per call, named by toolset and tool

Before, one CLI call produced two records with nothing linking them: one from the command wrapper and one from the tool's handler. Counting rows double-counted every successful command. The handler record copied the MCP grouping, so npx storybook tools review create was logged as toolset: dev, and the CLI names were only inside a command string.

After, one CLI call produces one record. It carries the toolset and tool the agent invoked, in CLI spelling, plus the handler's counters.

Field Before After
command "stories changed" (wrapper record) removed
toolset "dev" (handler record) "stories", "review", "docs", or "test"
tool absent "changed", "find-by-component", "show-story", …
event "tool:getChangedStories" (handler record) "tool:stories_changed", generated from toolset and tool
counters (storyCount, …) handler record unchanged, now on the same record
success, outcome, duration wrapper record unchanged, now on the same record
client, requestedMode, resolvedMode, attachMode, host, attachGate, interceptReason, multipleMatches wrapper record unchanged

Example, npx storybook tools stories changed with four changed stories:

Before, record 1 (from the command wrapper):

{
  "command": "stories changed",
  "success": true,
  "outcome": "success",
  "duration": 312,
  "client": "cli",
  "requestedMode": "auto",
  "resolvedMode": "local",
  "attachMode": "local",
  "host": "in-process"
}

Before, record 2 (from the tool's handler):

{
  "event": "tool:getChangedStories",
  "toolset": "dev",
  "storyCount": 4,
  "newStoryCount": 1,
  "modifiedStoryCount": 3,
  "affectedStoryCount": 0,
  "client": "cli",
  "requestedMode": "auto",
  "resolvedMode": "local",
  "attachMode": "local",
  "host": "in-process"
}

After, the one record:

{
  "toolset": "stories",
  "tool": "changed",
  "event": "tool:stories_changed",
  "storyCount": 4,
  "newStoryCount": 1,
  "modifiedStoryCount": 3,
  "affectedStoryCount": 0,
  "success": true,
  "outcome": "success",
  "duration": 312,
  "client": "cli",
  "requestedMode": "auto",
  "resolvedMode": "local",
  "attachMode": "local",
  "host": "in-process"
}

The Node SDK sends the same single record with client: "sdk". When the CLI or SDK runs the tool in a project-local child process, the parent still sends exactly one record.

Calls that never reach a handler (intercepts and attach gates) still produce one record without event or counters:

Case Before After
unknown tool stories nope command: "stories nope" toolset: "stories", tool: "nope"
name that is not a token, ../x list command: "(invalid) list" toolset: "(invalid)", tool: "list"
attach gate before anything was parsed command: "(none)" no toolset, no tool
help lookups no record no record

2. addon-mcp (MCP server): toolset becomes the toolset name, tool is added

Every MCP tool call already sent one addon-mcp record. Its toolset was the MCP grouping (dev, docs, test). It now carries the same toolset and tool as the CLI, so one query groups usage across surfaces. event keeps its existing name on MCP (the only surface that does), and the payload and the session fields (mcpSessionId, clientInfo, clientCapabilities, transport) are unchanged.

MCP tool toolset before toolset after tool (new) event (unchanged on MCP)
stories-preview dev stories preview tool:previewStories
stories-changed dev stories changed tool:getChangedStories
stories-find-by-component dev stories find-by-component tool:getStoriesByComponent
review-create dev review create tool:displayReview
docs-list docs docs list tool:listAllDocumentation
docs-show docs docs show tool:getDocumentation
docs-show-story none, no record docs show-story tool:getDocumentationForStory (new)
test-run test test run tool:runStoryTests

Not affected: the UI-instructions tool (tool:getUIBuildingInstructions, still toolset: "dev") and session:initialized.

3. New report for docs show-story / docs-show-story

This tool reported nothing on any surface. It now reports, as tool:docs_showStory on the CLI and SDK and tool:getDocumentationForStory on MCP:

Field Meaning
found whether a story was resolved
storyId the resolved id when found, otherwise the id that was asked for; absent when only a name was given and the component was unknown
lookup "storyId" or "name": which input shape the agent used
resultTokenCount size of the returned Markdown

Payload fields per tool, for reference (unchanged unless marked new)

toolset / tool event on CLI and SDK event on MCP Fields
stories / preview tool:stories_preview tool:previewStories inputStoryCount, outputStoryCount
stories / changed tool:stories_changed tool:getChangedStories storyCount, newStoryCount, modifiedStoryCount, affectedStoryCount
stories / find-by-component tool:stories_findByComponent tool:getStoriesByComponent componentCount, matchedComponentCount, totalMatchCount, maxDistance
review / create tool:review_create tool:displayReview collectionCount, storyCount, changedFileCount
docs / list tool:docs_list tool:listAllDocumentation componentCount, docsCount, resultTokenCount, sourceCount
docs / show tool:docs_show tool:getDocumentation componentId, found, resultTokenCount
docs / show-story (new) tool:docs_showStory tool:getDocumentationForStory found, storyId, lookup, resultTokenCount
test / run tool:test_run tool:runStoryTests runA11y, inputStoryCount, matchedStoryCount, passingStoryCount, failingStoryCount, a11yViolationCount, unhandledErrorCount

What this means for dashboards

  • Count CLI invocations by counting tools-command rows. No more double counting.
  • Group by toolset on either event with toolset; both use the same names now.
  • Queries on command for 10.6.0 data lose that key. Use toolset and tool from 10.6.1 on.
  • Queries on addon-mcp toolset = "dev" need "stories" or "review" from 10.6.1 on.
  • Join old and new MCP data on event: addon-mcp keeps its existing names (tool:getChangedStories, …). CLI data from 10.6.0 carried those names on its second record; from 10.6.1 the CLI uses generated names (tool:stories_changed), so CLI history joins on toolset and tool from 10.6.1 on, not on event.

Agreed with Michael and Jeppe: one data break at 10.6.1. Event names are generated from the toolset and tool everywhere except MCP, which keeps its existing names so MCP data stays continuous.

How

For the code reviewer. Nothing here is visible to users.

  • A tool handler no longer sends telemetry through a callback. It returns its report on its outcome: telemetry: { payload }, next to data and markdown. Handlers never write event, toolset, or tool.
  • invokeToolsetMethod in open-service is now the one way every surface runs a handler. It fills toolset and tool from where the method is registered, in CLI spelling, and generates event as tool:<toolset>_<method>, so a handler cannot report a name that disagrees with its registration and never invents an event name.
  • The CLI and SDK put that report into their tools-command record and add the run fields. The MCP adapter puts it into the addon-mcp event, adds the session fields, and replaces event with the pre-toolset name its tool registry declares per tool (mcpEventName). That registry is the only place those names live.
  • Deleted: ctx.telemetry, reportToolsetTelemetry, the CLI collector, the SDK per-call telemetry option and its sink wrapping, and the child-host telemetry IPC message. A child's report rides inside the outcome that already crosses IPC; the parent ignores the old message from a child on the previous release. The SDK has no external users yet, so no compatibility layer is kept for it.
  • A handler that throws has no outcome and therefore no report on the error record. That partial data was never meaningful.

Testing

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • stories
  • unit tests
  • integration tests
  • end-to-end tests

Manual testing

Caution

This section is mandatory for all contributions. If you believe no manual test is necessary, please state so explicitly. Thanks!

  1. Run a sandbox, e.g. yarn task --task sandbox --start-from auto --template react-vite/default-ts
  2. In the sandbox, run STORYBOOK_TELEMETRY_DEBUG=1 npx storybook tools stories changed
  3. Exactly one tools-command event is logged, with toolset: 'stories', tool: 'changed', event: 'tool:stories_changed', the story counters, success, and duration on the same record. There is no command field.
  4. Run STORYBOOK_TELEMETRY_DEBUG=1 npx storybook tools docs show-story --storyId example-button--primary; the record carries event: 'tool:docs_showStory', found: true, lookup: 'storyId', and a resultTokenCount.
  5. Start Storybook and call the stories-changed MCP tool from an MCP client; the addon-mcp event carries event: 'tool:getChangedStories', toolset: 'stories', tool: 'changed', and the same counters as before.

Each surface now reports its own vocabulary. The `addon-mcp` records stay
as they are, with the MCP grouping (`dev`, `docs`, `test`) supplied by the
toolset-backed tool adapter instead of hand-written in every handler. The
CLI and SDK collect the handler's single report and merge it into their one
`tools-command` record, which carries the CLI spelling of `toolset` and
`tool` alongside the legacy `event` name and the handler's counters, and no
longer carries `command`.

`docs show-story` gains a `tool:getDocumentationForStory` report on both
surfaces with `found`, `storyId`, `lookup`, and `resultTokenCount`.

Walkthrough

Telemetry now travels from tool handlers in returned outcomes. CLI, SDK, child-host, and MCP paths forward these reports through shared invocation APIs. Toolset and method names come from registration data, and handler tests validate structured reports.

Changes

Unified tool telemetry

MCP registrations use shared toolset groups. The MCP adapter applies grouping when it reports returned telemetry.
Toolset reports and show-story telemetry
code/core/src/shared/open-service/toolsets/*, code/addons/vitest/src/node/toolset/*
Toolset handlers return usage reports. Docs story resolution reports lookup, story ID, found status, and token counts. Tests validate returned reports across toolsets.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bea4c

Telemetry now travels through invocation outcomes, but unresolved risks could misattribute CLI or SDK telemetry, disrupt older child-host calls, or return MCP errors when telemetry reporting fails. These behaviors should be addressed before merge.

Handlers return telemetry: { event, counters } next to data and markdown.
invokeToolsetMethod, the one way every surface runs a method, names the
report after the registration (toolset, tool in CLI spelling). The CLI and
SDK forward that report into their tools-command record; the MCP adapter
substitutes its grouping for toolset to keep addon-mcp records compatible.

Removes ctx.telemetry, reportToolsetTelemetry, the CLI collector, the SDK
per-call telemetry option and sink wrapping, and the child-host telemetry
IPC message: the report rides inside the outcome that already crosses IPC.

223-223: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Put the handler report first in the spread so registration names always win.

The doc comment on Lines 207-209 states that the report is named after the registration and never by the handler. The current spread order places ...telemetry last, so a handler that returns toolset or tool inside its telemetry object overrides the registration names. Reversing the order enforces the invariant at runtime.

♻️ Proposed reorder

Move both mock behaviors into typed beforeEach setup.

call.mockResolvedValue(outcome) and the test-local child.send.mockImplementation(...) configure mocks directly inside tests. The checked-in Vitest rule requires vi.mocked() access and mock implementations in beforeEach. Move each test-specific outcome or reply into a fixture consumed by setup, then use vi.mocked(call) and vi.mocked(child.send).

Prevent telemetry failures from changing the MCP tool result.

If collectTelemetry rejects, reportToolsetTelemetry rejects. The enclosing catch then returns an MCP error result after the handler has completed successfully. Catch and log telemetry errors inside reportToolsetTelemetry, then preserve the handler outcome.
