Telemetry reports which node linker pnpm or yarn uses. It found out by running "pnpm config get nodeLinker" or "yarn config get nodeLinker": a full package manager start-up, 300 to 400ms, in every Storybook process. The value is one line in .npmrc, pnpm-workspace.yaml or .yarnrc.yml, so read that file instead. Values are validated against what each manager supports; when unset, pnpm defaults to "isolated" and yarn berry to "pnp".

Checked the pnpm and yarn behaviour against the real tools (pnpm 10.34.0, pnpm 11.0.8, yarn 4.18.0) with a small workspace probe. The yarn side matches exactly: default pnp, the working-directory file wins over the root one, YARN_NODE_LINKER wins over the file. Two findings on the pnpm side below.
pnpm reads pnpm-workspace.yaml before .npmrc, not after. pnpm 11 stopped reading settings from .npmrc and npm_config_* and reads pnpm_config_* instead; .npmrc is skipped when a pnpm 11 version is known.
…ng helpers The generic allowed and readConfigValue helpers are replaced by one candidate list per package manager and an inline type predicate. pnpm 11 now also ignores npm_config_node_linker, matching the tool.
Closes #
What I did
Telemetry no longer starts pnpm or yarn to find out which node linker a project uses. It reads the config file instead. That saves 300 to 400 ms in every
storybook dev,storybook buildandstorybook toolsrun.Background
The "node linker" is a pnpm or yarn setting that says how
node_modulesis laid out (isolated, hoisted, pnp). Telemetry has reported it since #32072, to see how many projects used Yarn PnP before Storybook 11 dropped PnP support. The problem
To read that one setting, telemetry ran the package manager:
Starting pnpm or yarn costs 300 to 400 ms. The setting itself is one line in a text file:
The fix
Read the file. For each package manager, the sources are checked in the same order the tool itself uses:
YARN_NODE_LINKER, then.yarnrc.ymlpnppnpm_config_node_linkerornpm_config_node_linker, thenpnpm-workspace.yaml, then.npmrcisolatednode_modulesDetails:
yamlpackage core already depends on..npmrcis INI and is read line by line, with quotes stripped..yarnrc.yml, so it never looks at one.pnpm 11
pnpm 11 no longer reads settings from
.npmrcornpm_config_*. It readspnpm_config_*instead. When the pnpm version is known (from thepackageManagerfield inpackage.json) and is 11 or later, both.npmrcandnpm_config_node_linkerare skipped. When the version is unknown, a leftovernode-linkerline in.npmrccan still be reported. pnpm 11 warns about such lines, so this should be rare. What changes in the data
isolated.undefined, nownode_modules.~/.yarnrc.yml,~/.npmrc, pnpm's global config) or in a directory above the project root: was that value, now the default. The package manager read those; a single file read does not.Question for the telemetry owners
The PnP decision this field was added for has been made (#32645). If nobody needs the field any more, we can delete it and this whole file with it.
