WalkthroughThe change adds opt-in cache-routing trace capture to the gRPC pipeline and TokenSpeed servicer. It records routing evidence in logs and, when enabled and within the size limit, in a response header. Documentation describes trace contents and handling. ChangesCache Routing Trace

🔴 Important: Setting SMG_CACHE_TRACE=1 turns on the logs and adds this header to every successful response. Those are two different jobs, and the header part causes two production problems:
- It leaks internal details to clients. The trace includes every candidate's internal
workerURL, itsload,healthyandoverloadedstate, the policy thresholds and the request IDs. The doc tells downstream gateways to strip the header, but if SMG faces clients directly, or the operator only wanted the log lines, all of this reaches untrusted callers. The PR doesn't strip or check anything here. - The 16 KiB cap is larger than what common proxies and clients accept. nginx's default
proxy_buffer_size(4k/8k) has to hold the whole upstream header block, so a trace over about 4–8 KB gets a502 upstream sent too big header. Node's default--max-http-header-sizeand h11/httpx (used by the OpenAI Python SDK) both cap the entire header block at 16 KiB, so a value near the cap fails the response. A PD request with 2 selections, 32 candidates each (~80 B per candidate), plus up to 32 gates gets close to that cap. So turning on diagnostics to investigate cache routing can break live traffic.
Suggestion: put the header behind its own opt-in (e.g. SMG_CACHE_TRACE_HEADER=1) so the logs alone never change the response. Also drop the header cap to around 4 KiB and fall back to log-only above that (the log line already has the full record).
Minor: HeaderValue::from_str rejects non-ASCII bytes, and serde_json doesn't escape them. So a non-ASCII request ID or URL drops the header silently, and nothing records that it was dropped.

🟡 Nit: Each selection resets prediction but not gates. Also, dispatch() only takes selections and truncated (cache_trace.rs:104), so gates recorded outside a registry selection are carried into the next one.
How it happens: the EPD encode leg calls policy.select_worker(encode_workers, …) directly (worker_selection.rs:1009), and that runs after the prefill and decode selections. If the encode policy is cache_aware, its eligibility and spill gates sit in the capture through dispatch(). On a retry they get attached to the next attempt's prefill selection. On a final failure, failure() reports them. That is the kind of cross-attempt misattribution this PR is trying to remove.
The same thing happens when selection() returns early at the 16-selection limit (cache_trace.rs:71-73). That early return also skips the std::mem::take of gates.
Fix: clear gates here together with the prediction, e.g. a cache_trace::begin_selection() that resets both. Or take gates in selection() before the truncation early-return.

🟡 Nit: Off-by-one. The caller already applied .take(32) (request_execution.rs:321), so a plan with exactly 32 generate requests (e.g. n=32) gets engine_ids_complete: false even though every ID was captured.
There's also the opposite case. generate_requests_mut() yields nothing for ProtoRequest::Embed, so embeddings and classify dispatches report engine_ids: [] with engine_ids_complete: true, even though an engine ID exists.
Suggest having the caller pass completeness explicitly: take 33 and truncate, or compare against the plan's real request count. Embed plans should report false/unknown, or include the embed request ID. There are no unit tests for this module yet. A small test covering the 16/32 limits and this flag would catch both cases.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Calculate completeness before limiting engine IDs.
When a plan contains exactly 32 engine IDs, the collector retains all 32, but engine_ids_complete is false. Pass the uncapped count to dispatch and compare that count with the retained count.

Record event-index evidence for warm-up decisions.
When warmup_slice or warmup_divert selects a worker, the function returns before this prediction call. The resulting selection has a null prediction and omits the warm-up branch. Record the branch and overlap evidence before both early returns.

🟡 Nit: This log line has no way to link it to a request. It carries no root_id or dispatch_id, so when requests run concurrently an operator can't tell which dispatch's header was dropped. The full evidence line above it may also be interleaved with other requests' lines.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 Nit: Now that docs/cache-routing-trace.md has been removed (2766c8c), nothing in the repo documents SMG_CACHE_TRACE / SMG_CACHE_TRACE_HEADER or the rules for using the x-smg-cache-trace header. That doc was the only place saying the header is meant for a trusted gateway, that downstream gateways should verify root_id and strip it, and that predictions are not engine cache hits. Without it, an operator who finds SMG_CACHE_TRACE_HEADER=1 has no warning that it sends root_id/engine_ids/policy predictions to whoever receives the response.
Since the repo has no top-level docs/, a short doc comment here keeps the important parts next to the code, e.g.:
| fn header_enabled() -> bool { | |
| /// `SMG_CACHE_TRACE_HEADER=1` (requires `SMG_CACHE_TRACE=1`) attaches a compact | |
| /// `x-smg-cache-trace` header (≤2 KiB, ASCII, no candidate addresses/load) for a | |
| /// trusted downstream gateway, which must verify `root_id` and strip the header | |
| /// before responding to clients. Predictions are routing estimates, not engine cache hits. | |
| fn header_enabled() -> bool { |
Cache-affinity diagnostics miss sticky overrides and can misattribute retries when caller request IDs differ from the middleware ID. Preserve the explicit dispatch relationship and decision source in opt-in, bounded traces, keeping routing predictions distinct from engine cache hits.
