test(e2e): assert every worker delivers load reports to the gateway - #2460
Conversation
The gateway polls each worker's load endpoint and exposes the fleet view at GET /loads. Load-aware policies and overload protection act on that view, but a worker whose poll fails silently degrades to in-flight counting, so a broken load path shows up nowhere else: a renamed field in the SGLang servicer made every GetLoads on a disaggregated worker raise for weeks without a red lane (#2458). The new router test waits for every registered worker to appear in /loads with sane counters, checks that a burst of in-flight requests is visible in the report, and on the two-GPU lanes checks that both the prefill and the decode worker report. The TokenSpeed chat lane picks the file up alongside the admin-ops test so all three gRPC engines cover it. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
🔴 Important: Assert presence of token_usage and dp_rank instead of defaulting them.
entry.get("token_usage", 0.0) and entry.get("dp_rank", 0) substitute a passing value when the field is absent. This is the exact failure mode the module docstring describes: a renamed or dropped field stays invisible. record_engine_load in model_gateway/src/observability/metrics.rs reads both fields on every rank report, so both must be present.

🟡 Nit: These two checks use .get(field, default), so a report that is missing token_usage or dp_rank passes silently — exactly the "counters came from a default, not the engine" failure this module exists to catch. Both fields are non-Option in SchedulerLoadSnapshot (crates/protocols/src/worker.rs:1276, :1286) and are always serialized, so they can be required like the three counters above.

🟡 Nit: The PD test is presence-only, which no longer covers the #2458 regression class it cites. The fix in grpc_servicer/smg_grpc_servicer/sglang/loads.py replaced the hard attribute read with _first_attr(..., default=0), so the next SGLang rename of the prefill queue counter will no longer raise — it will quietly report 0, the worker still shows up in /loads, and this assertion still passes.
Worth asserting that a PD SGLang report actually carries the disagg section (disagg_mode, prefill_queue_reqs / decode_queue_reqs, populated in crates/grpc_client/src/sglang_scheduler.rs:803), gated on the engine — vLLM's servicer emits no disagg section, so it has to stay SGLang-only (is_sglang() from e2e_test/infra/constants.py).

🟡 Nit: The selection floors are not bumped anywhere in this PR, so each lane that gains tests loses a little of the guard. This lane goes 114 → 116; e2e_test/router lanes pick the file up implicitly: e2e-1gpu-gateway (sglang) 23 → 25, e2e-2gpu-pd (×3) 15 → 16.
The most concrete one is e2e-1gpu-gateway (vllm) at line 843 — its floor is 3 with the comment "vllm gateway lane selects only 3 tests; floor covers all of them", and TestWorkerLoadReports adds 2 vllm/gpu-1 tests, so that statement is now wrong and the floor covers 3 of 5. Bumping the floors here keeps them meaningful.

🟡 Nit: The module docstring names two load paths ("gRPC GetLoads, or the metrics scrape for HTTP SGLang"), but only gRPC is parametrized, so the HTTP scrape path (model_gateway/src/worker/monitor.rs:769 — /v1/loads then metrics fallback) stays uncovered and can break the same silent way. TestAdminOps already proves the sglang gateway lane runs ["grpc", "http"] on 1 GPU; splitting a sglang-only subclass with "http" would close that gap. Worth confirming the scrape actually fills num_total_reqs/token_usage before adding it, since _assert_report_is_sane is stricter than that path may be.

🔴 Important: Adding tokenspeed here adds no coverage — no lane selects this test. _filter_env_items (e2e_test/fixtures/hooks.py:260) matches the gpu marker against E2E_GPU_TIER by exact string, and e2e-gpu-job.yml:86-88 sets E2E_ENGINE/E2E_GPU_TIER from the lane inputs, so this class needs a lane with engine: tokenspeed and gpu_tier: "2". The four TokenSpeed lanes are:
e2e-1gpu-chat (tokenspeed)—gpu_tier: "1"(the lane that runstest_loads.py)e2e-1gpu-chat-zmq (tokenspeed)— tier 1, and_filter_zmq_itemsdrops PD anywaye2e-2gpu-chat-zmq-dp (tokenspeed)—gpu_tier: "1"despite the 2-GPU runner,test_dirs: e2e_test/chat_completionse2e-4gpu-epd (tokenspeed)— tier 4,test_dirs: .../test_epd_multimodal.py
So TestDisaggregatedWorkerLoadReports still runs on sglang/vllm only, and the commit message ("run the PD load-report check on TokenSpeed too") claims coverage CI never exercises. Either add a gpu_tier: "2" TokenSpeed lane over e2e_test/router/test_loads.py (the infra supports it — worker.py:412 emits --disaggregation-mode for TokenSpeed prefill/decode), or drop tokenspeed from this marker and keep it consistent with every other PD test (test_pd_mmlu.py:63, test_pd_responses.py:83, …), which stay sglang/vllm.
Description
Problem
The gateway polls every worker's load endpoint (gRPC
GetLoads, or the metrics scrape for HTTP SGLang) and exposes the fleet view atGET /loads. Load-aware policies and overload protection act on that view. When a poll fails, the worker silently falls back to in-flight counting, so a broken load path is invisible in every existing e2e lane. That is how a renamed field in the SGLang servicer made everyGetLoadson a disaggregated worker raiseAttributeErroron each poll without a single red job (#2458).Solution
Add
e2e_test/router/test_loads.py:TestWorkerLoadReports(1 GPU, sglang / vllm / tokenspeed, gRPC): every worker listed by/workersmust appear in/loadswithin a few poll intervals with sane counters, and a 16-request burst must be visible as running or waiting work in at least one poll, which proves the numbers come from the engine rather than a default.TestDisaggregatedWorkerLoadReports(2 GPUs, sglang / vllm,pd_grpc): both the prefill and the decode worker must report. This is the case that was broken before fix(grpc_servicer): read SGLang's renamed prefill queue counter in GetLoads #2458.The gateway runs with
--load-monitor-interval 2so the wait stays short. The TokenSpeed chat lane adds the file to itstest_dirsnext to the admin-ops test, since that is the only lane with TokenSpeed installed.Changes
