fix(grpc_servicer): read SGLang's renamed prefill queue counter in GetLoads - #2458
Conversation
…tLoads SGLang renamed the prefill pre-allocation queue counter in its load snapshot to prefill_bootstrap_queue_reqs while the gateway proto kept prefill_prealloc_queue_reqs. The servicer read the old attribute, so every GetLoads from a prefill or decode worker raised AttributeError and the gateway never received load reports from disaggregated SGLang workers. The snapshot conversion moves into an engine-free module that maps whichever attribute the running SGLang exposes, and a unit test pins both spellings plus the regular-worker case. 🟡 Nit: The default=0 makes the next rename silent instead of loud.
Today's bug was findable precisely because it raised AttributeError on every poll. With this fallback, if SGLang renames the counter a third time, prefill_prealloc_queue_reqs becomes 0 and the gateway computes prefill_queue_reqs = 0 + prefill_inflight_queue_reqs (crates/grpc_client/src/sglang_scheduler.rs:804), so a prefill worker with a deep bootstrap queue looks under-loaded and load-aware PD routing skews toward it — the same invisible degradation this PR fixes, minus the error that made it detectable.
Consider logging a warning (once) when none of names is present, so the fallback leaves a trace:
for name in names:
if hasattr(obj, name):
return getattr(obj, name)
logger.warning("none of %s present on %s; reporting %r", names, type(obj).__name__, default)
return defaultThe fallback path also isn't covered by the new tests — a third case with neither attribute set would pin it.

🟡 Nit: Only the prefill counter is read tolerantly; the other seven attributes on the same struct are still direct dereferences, so any one of them being renamed or not-yet-added in a given SGLang build reintroduces the exact same outage (every GetLoads fails → no load reports from PD workers at all). decode_retracted_queue_reqs is the newest of these and the likeliest next casualty.
Since the whole section is optional metadata, a fail-soft read of the section would bound the blast radius — e.g. route all eight through _first_attr (single-name tuples for the stable ones), or wrap the CopyFrom in try/except AttributeError with a warning and leave the section unset. That way a rename degrades one field or one section instead of killing the whole load report.
Description
Problem
SGLang's
DisaggregationMetrics(insglang/srt/managers/load_snapshot.py, on 0.5.18 and on current main) names the prefill queue counterprefill_bootstrap_queue_reqs. The gateway proto and the servicer still useprefill_prealloc_queue_reqs, so_convert_loads_to_protobufdereferenced an attribute that does not exist. Whenever a snapshot carries a disaggregation section, everyGetLoadscall fails:(seen repeatedly, once per load poll, in the
e2e-1gpu-chat (sglang)log of run 34160176067.) For disaggregated SGLang workers this means the gateway never receives a load report, and load-aware routing silently falls back to in-flight counting. Nothing in the e2e suite asserts that load reports arrive, so the lanes stayed green.Solution
smg_grpc_servicer/sglang/loads.py, a module with no engine imports, and map the prefill queue counter from whichever attribute the running SGLang exposes (prefill_bootstrap_queue_reqsfirst, the legacyprefill_prealloc_queue_reqssecond).grpc_servicer/tests/test_sglang_get_loads.py, which loads the module by path (thesglangpackage__init__imports the engine) and pins both spellings plus the regular-worker case where the section is absent.Changes
