fix(web, server): the branch label no longer flips back after a switch - #28575
Picking a branch in the composer or thread details makes the label go old → new → old → new. In a real client this happened on 8 of 8 switches, with the old branch back on screen for about 370 ms each time.
Change
useOptimistic in BranchToolbarBranchSelector drops the new branch when the vcs.switchRef reply arrives. The label then falls back to status, which still reports the old branch because the server only starts refreshing it after replying. branchStatusQuery.refresh() also restarts the subscription at that moment, and the server's cached snapshot still has the old branch.
Now:
refreshAfterCheckout publishes the new branch before vcs.switchRef and vcs.createRef (with switchRef) reply, then finishes remote status in the background as before.
Status and RPC replies aren't ordered on the wire, so the picker also holds the new branch until status changes.
The client no longer resubscribes after a switch, since the server already pushes the update.
This is one component for the composer and thread details. Mobile uses the same RPC and stream, so it gets the server ordering but has no client hold. No contract changes.
Trade-off: the trigger stays disabled about 400 ms longer, until the local status read finishes.
Scope and approval
This qualifies for the small, focused bug-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md: 109 non-test lines that stop a label showing the wrong branch, with no feature, default or contract change.
Verification
Real web client (Chrome, 1280×800, fresh state, scratch clone of this repo with origin on GitHub). 8 switches per build between main and two branches with open PRs, waiting for each to settle, logged by a page observer. Captured before a rebase over one unrelated upstream commit and before the hold gained environmentId from review, which only affects switching environments.

Format flags only an untracked local file. vp run typecheck can't start in my checkout because of a stale tsc shim, so I ran tsc --noEmit directly on apps/server and apps/web, and both pass.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The change prevents branch-label reversals by publishing local status before checkout replies and retaining the successful label while status catches up. It preserves existing checkout and remote-refresh policies, with a modest additional wait for local status.

Walkthrough
Ref changes now use a checkout-specific refresh that publishes local status before remote reconciliation completes. The branch selector holds the selected branch while status still reports the replaced branch.
The broadcaster adds refreshAfterCheckout and extracts shared remote and local totals refresh logic. The test checks that local status publishes before the remote read completes.

The selector tracks the selected branch, replaced branch, environment, and checkout path. It applies the hold only while the current environment, path, and canonical branch match, and refreshes the branch list after branch actions.

A failed status read can leave clients showing stale branch information. A rapid subsequent switch can also advance a branch without its own auto-pull checks. These are bounded risks to consider before merging.

verified as-is at c63e30b009b936cd9c1a74de9e2ec468e8739c57 on this linux boat vm. playwright drove /usr/bin/google-chrome at 1280x800 against real dev servers, one build at a time. the project, branches and threads were created through the app, with real codex gpt-6.1-sol turns.
reproduced the reversal on github/main (8760d063e9): main → verify/branch-a → main → verify/branch-a, for both branch creation and switching.
the pr kept the selected branch visible through checkout. six additional switches had no reversals, and every result matched git branch --show-current.
the draft composer created verify/branch-b; both pickers agreed, and a new codex thread reported that branch and a clean checkout.
a codex turn ran git switch main; the details label followed the provider checkout. reload preserved the actual branch.
vp run check:changed b50d8a1b15eed3a75e1e0969765e14c6436d80d7 passed through blacksmith-check: format, lint, knip, graphql, affected typechecks, 53 tests and compiler coverage. the pr also has 29 successful ci checks.
one nearby limitation reproduces on both main and this pr: after a provider checkout, selecting the previously current branch can use stale worktree metadata and leave git on the current branch. this predates the change and was left untouched.
before, main briefly shows the old branch after the selection:
after, the same repository and conversation keep the selected branch visible:

merged current main (2b1021ce411d) into the contributor branch without rebasing. resolved the broadcaster conflicts by keeping checkout publication ahead of the reply and main's post-fetch cache invalidation and remote-poll totals refresh. the pr remains six files, 179 additions and 21 deletions.

playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome drove three branch switches through the real client and server. both labels converged to the selected branch without reversal, and each checkout matched git branch --show-current. this pass did not repeat the earlier real-provider checks or test native clients and remote connections.
