feat(claude): Ultracode works with any effort, like Claude Desktop - #27034
Claude Desktop runs Ultracode at any effort, for example "High · Ultracode". In T3 Code, Ultracode was an effort level that always ran at xhigh. Claude Code 2.1.284+ supports Ultracode at any effort, and a no-prompt probe on CLI 2.1.312 confirmed High and Medium with Ultracode on.
Change
Ultracode is its own On/Off option, on web and mobile. On web it is a button beside Standard and Fast in the model picker footer, and the composer shows a Workflow icon for it, like the Fast bolt.
model-manifest.json keeps the old ultracode effort level, because released servers read it from main. ClaudeModelCatalog turns that level into the toggle, for built-in and custom models. The manifest now recommends Claude Code 2.1.284, the first release that runs Ultracode at any effort.
Old effort: "ultracode" selections and delegate_task requests read as Extra High with Ultracode on. Turning Ultracode off sends ultracode: false, so a --settings launch argument cannot keep it on.
Workflow hover cards show each agent's model and effort. The workflow itself shows the model it runs on instead of "Not reported".

Verification
Tests that fail on the old code: claudeModelOptions.test.ts, model.test.ts, OrchestratorMcpService.test.ts (old effort level), ClaudeModelCatalog.test.ts (custom models), subagentRuntime.test.ts (workflow model fallback).
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip and typecheck pass. CI passes.
Screenshots come from the real web app and an iOS simulator with a dev client built from this branch, against a seeded dev database. No paid turn ran.
Visual evidence from the takeover pass is in the full index. It is incomplete: 16 of 28 rows were captured.
Risks
Claude Code 2.1.280 to 2.1.283 stays supported and gets no update prompt, but may still run Ultracode at xhigh. Users below 2.1.280 are now told to use 2.1.284 or newer. This matches how Codex recommends 0.159 while 0.156 stays supported.
A maintainer took this over and cut the tests to one per behaviour.
Created with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (T3 Code). Probing, screenshots and review used GPT-6.1 Sol.
Takeover
Taken over from @Bil0000 (land round). Main is merged in, and three small server fixes are added on top of the author's commits. Custom Claude models now get the Ultracode toggle in provider discovery and in main-turn execution, not only for subagents. A custom model that defaulted to Ultracode, or offered it without a separate Extra High, keeps Extra High with Ultracode on. Mobile subagent rows keep the reported effort for raw API model ids such as claude-opus-5[1m]. The evidence below replaces the earlier partial index linked above.
Evidence

Each side is the real app from its own checkout on a fresh database (T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0) with synthetic data. Thread controls were set through the app, legacy selections and subagent/workflow rows were written by a seed script, and no provider turn ran. Review: three rounds, two independent reviewers per round (Codex GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5), mode land.
Round 1: custom models missed the toggle in discovery and main turns; mobile rows dropped the effort for raw API model ids. Both fixed in 193ad89c72.
Round 2: a custom model that defaulted to Ultracode sent the retired effort. Fixed in 383166aba5.

Final verdicts: B MERGE; A's last finding is the one fixed in 56c2192.
Tests: 8 focused files, 463 tests pass. Each new regression test fails with its fix reverted. vp run check:changed passes.
Proof audit: pass 1 derived the matrix. Pass 2 rebuilt R2 from the uploaded scripts with zero pixel delta. It flagged R3's wording, which is now corrected (the footer fits on one line at 390 px), and R9's composer label, which is now captured with the editor expanded.
CI: green on 56c2192. An earlier MessagesTimeline browser-test failure on 383166a was a flake; that file is untouched here and the test passed locally and on the next run.
Unverified: native frames were matched 1.8–29.5 s apart rather than 500 ms. No real Claude turn ran on the VM.

Valid. Fixed in 7ac00b9: the legacy migration now keeps an explicit ultracode value as given, so "false" reaches invalidOptionSelections and is rejected. Regression assertion in packages/shared/src/model.test.ts.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Ultracode becomes an independent Claude toggle usable with any effort, while legacy selections retain their existing behavior. The changes preserve effective defaults and reuse existing orchestration rather than introducing new access or data-handling behavior.

Changes: Ultracode option handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Expose Ultracode as a boolean option apps/server/src/provider/ClaudeModelCatalog.ts
Catalog capabilities replace the ultracode choice in an effort descriptor with a boolean ultracode descriptor.
Shared model helpers convert legacy effort: "ultracode" selections to effort: "xhigh" and ultracode: true when the boolean option is available. Normalized selections also populate descriptor values and explicit option IDs.
Apply normalized options in server flows apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.test.ts, apps/server/src/claudeModelOptions.ts, apps/server/src/claudeModelOptions.test.ts, apps/server/src/textGeneration/ClaudeTextGeneration.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts
MCP target resolution normalizes requested and inherited options. Claude compilation and text generation determine Ultracode from the boolean descriptor’s current value. Tests cover legacy selections and explicit effort settings.
Display normalized options in the client packages/client-runtime/src/modelTraits.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/TraitsPicker.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/EffortGlyph.tsx
The client formats legacy Ultracode effort as “Extra High.” The traits display includes the enabled Ultracode label and workflow icon.
Affected custom Claude configurations may silently omit the Ultracode workflow; the fix is localized but should be applied before merge.

The title "feat(claude): Ultracode works with any effort, like Claude Desktop" matches the main change. The PR makes Ultracode a separate on/off option that works with any effort level (High, Medium, etc.) instead of an effort level that always runs at xhigh. The title is a conventional commit with a plain-language summary and does not list files.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It has Problem, Change, Verification, and Risks sections, plus a takeover note and evidence index. The Problem section states the Ultracode mismatch with Claude Desktop and Claude Code 2.1.284+. The Change section lists the toggle, manifest, legacy selection handling, and workflow display changes. The Verification section names focused test files, the check command, and screenshot evidence. The Scope and approval section is missing. The description does not link a triaged bug issue or a discussion with explicit maintainer approval. It also gives no explicit exemption for a small fix. The Ultracode toggle is a new UI behavior and a workflow-related change, so the template says approval is still needed. The Verification section also has an inconsistency: the description says 16 of 28 evidence rows were captured in the earlier index, but the takeover section replaces that index. The author also states that the first-pass evidence is incomplete. The final evidence index covers the current head. The template also asks for the model and harness at the end, and the description includes this line.
Resolution
Add a Scope and approval section. Link the triaged bug issue or the discussion where a maintainer approved the direction and scope, and include the approval comment. The PR objectives show that the maintainer took over the PR, but that does not replace the required approval link. If the change is a focused configuration of an existing capability, explain what already exists, what the toggle controls, and why its effects stay within the Claude model capability. Also state that the 16-of-28 evidence gap is closed by the final index, or remove the stale statement from the Verification section. Keep the Verification section focused on the changed behavior.

Keep an explicit ultracode value as given so validation rejects a non-boolean one,
and migrate inherited options so an effort-only override keeps Ultracode on.
Apply withUltracodeToggle to custom Claude entries.
Custom entries skip the Ultracode toggle transform. A saved custom model that keeps effort: "ultracode" in its effort select, without a boolean ultracode descriptor, reaches text generation unchanged. In that case ClaudeTextGeneration keeps the raw ultracode effort and omits the Ultracode setting. The legacy selection should map to xhigh with Ultracode on.
With this change, the boolean ultracode descriptor follows the effort select. getProviderOptionDescriptors then maps the legacy ultracode effort to xhigh with ultracode: true. Explicit ultracode selections are kept. Custom entries without an effort ultracode option are returned unchanged. This change does not address subagent selection.

Custom entries skip withUltracodeToggle: valid. Fixed in e8bb4eb. Custom capabilities now go through withUltracodeToggle. The "appends custom models" test in ClaudeModelCatalog.test.ts now asserts that a custom effort with ultracode becomes effort + boolean ultracode. That assertion fails on the old code.
Legacy Ultracode in claudeSubagentModelSelection: not changed, because this path never gets the value "ultracode". effort comes from the Agent tool input, the owner's effort, or compileClaudeModelSelection(...).effort. The compiled effort has already been through the manifest effortMap (ultracode -> xhigh), and Claude Code's Agent tool only sends real effort levels. This matches main, where a subagent also gets xhigh and no Ultracode option.
Assert that ultracode is removed from the effort options.
This assertion checks only descriptor IDs and types. It still passes if the effort descriptor retains ultracode, so it does not verify the main transformation contract. Assert that the effort option IDs are ["gentle", "brutal"] in this existing test. As per path instructions, extend the existing case instead of adding a duplicate test.

These are the takeover's tests for the Ultracode-as-toggle change.
- compileClaudeModelSelection: effort + Ultracode compiles as given, an old
effort "ultracode" reads as xhigh with Ultracode on, and an explicit
ultracode false is kept.
- delegate_task accepts an old effort "ultracode" request as xhigh + Ultracode.
- Custom Claude models with an Ultracode effort get the toggle.
- Live mid-session changes send the chosen effort with Ultracode.
Dropped the review-round cases: the shared helper test (covered through
compile) and the old-parent delegate override.

withLegacyUltracodeEffort now accepts missing descriptors and keeps the
caller's selection type, so its call sites drop the `?? []` and
`?? undefined` coercions. The compile path reads the Ultracode descriptor
directly, and the EffortGlyph comment says why the named Ultracode level
stays: older servers still offer it as an effort.

Normalize custom capabilities with withUltracodeToggle.
A configured custom model can provide ultracode as an effort option without a boolean descriptor. The custom catalog path preserves that shape. Both selection and text-generation consumers emit ultracode: true only from the boolean descriptor, so the custom model omits the toggle.
Apply the same normalization at the custom-model boundary:

Text generation reads custom models through the scoped catalog, so without
the toggle there a custom model's legacy Ultracode effort lost the Ultracode
flag it had on main.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Send ultracode: false when the toggle is off, so a --settings launch argument
that turns Ultracode on no longer wins. An unset toggle still sends nothing.
Workflow agents pass their reported effort and speed to the hover card, and a
workflow card falls back to the model it runs on instead of "Not reported".
Mobile agent rows show the same effort.
The Ultracode switch moves from the effort column to the picker footer, as
one button next to the speed control. The effort column now lists only
reasoning levels.
Provider discovery now advertises custom Claude models with Ultracode as
a boolean option, as built-in models are. Main turns compile their model
selection against the catalog scoped to the instance's custom models, so
High + Ultracode on a custom model reaches the SDK as `ultracode: true`.
Mobile workflow member rows keep the reported effort when the model is a
raw API id such as `claude-opus-5[1m]` that the picker catalog lacks.

Custom Claude models now get the Ultracode toggle in provider discovery and in main-turn execution, not only for subagents. A custom model that defaulted to Ultracode, or offered it without a separate Extra High, keeps Extra High with Ultracode on. Mobile subagent rows keep the reported effort for raw API model ids such as
claude-opus-5[1m]. The evidence below replaces the earlier partial index linked above.Evidence

T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0) with synthetic data. Thread controls were set through the app, legacy selections and subagent/workflow rows were written by a seed script, and no provider turn ran.
