fix(web): show complete tooltip labels when opening - #25199
Hovering controls throughout the Windows desktop client briefly shows only the first few words of a tooltip. Reproduced on the browser annotation icon and on the sidebar’s Add project and Filter threads by project controls.
The shared tooltip uses Base UI's content-morphing viewport even though each tooltip has its own trigger. During the opening animation in Electron, the content briefly wraps into two lines inside a viewport sized for one line, clipping the remaining words.
Change
Render tooltip content in a normal padded container and remove the viewport's measured popup/positioner sizes and size transitions. Keep the existing fade, scale, wrapping, variants, and collision handling. This fixes the shared web/desktop primitive; the mobile client uses native UI.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix for an obvious rendering bug in an existing tooltip. It qualifies for the focused bug-fix exception without a prior issue or discussion.
Verification
Audited all 330 tooltip popup declarations across 149 files, including the current and legacy sidebar, chat/composer, Settings, files/diffs, pull requests, usage, device, and browser controls. Every custom tooltip uses the shared implementation; the native mobile client has no separate tooltip renderer.
Replayed 383 opening-animation cases in Electron: 348 source-callsite/placement configurations, 24 long-label/multiline/variant boundary cases, two real rich tooltip components, and all nine tooltip-styled popover configurations. Every case observed the opening animation; none had unexpected clipping or overflow. Rich titles that deliberately use ellipsis retain that behavior. Dynamic labels use representative sizing values, rather than claiming every possible server/provider state was driven in the full app.
Verified the actual sidebar controls before and after: Add project and Filter threads by project each clipped text in eight visible animation frames on the original implementation and zero on the patch. Full coverage report.
Reproduced with the actual PreviewChromeRow component mounted in an isolated development app, using Electron 44.9.3 on Windows at 125% display scaling. Application state is confined to the worktree and a temporary Electron profile.
Sampled the opening animation: the original clipped the label in seven visible frames; the fix clipped it in none. The initial text height changes from about 31 px in a 24 px viewport to about 15 px, fully visible from the start.
All stages of vp run check:changed pass: formatting, lint, both knip passes, and the affected web/scripts typechecks. The Windows ignored-file scan traverses pnpm junctions and produces path-length warnings. PowerShell reports exit 1 when redirecting those warnings as NativeCommandError; every check stage passes.
This is a visual layout fix, so the captures are its regression proof, as required by the repository's verification guidance.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused tooltip rendering fix that removes the measured content viewport responsible for clipping labels during opening. It preserves collision handling, wrapping, variants, and fade/scale behavior while changing only shared UI presentation.

Walkthrough
The tooltip positioner and popup no longer set explicit dimensions or transition width and height. Tooltip children now render inside a padded div instead of the Base UI viewport.

Summary
Positioner and content layout apps/web/src/components/ui/tooltip.tsx
The positioner retains its maximum-width constraint but drops explicit height and width. The popup drops popup sizing classes and width and height transitions. Its children render inside a padded div instead of the Base UI viewport.
pingdotgg/t3code#24093: This issue concerns tooltip content visibility and names the shared positioner. This change updates positioner and popup sizing, but does not enable pointer interaction with the popup.
