feat(clients): mark threads with an open async question while they keep working - #24894
Since #15430, a thread whose Codex run asks a non-blocking (async) question correctly stays Working until the run ends. Nothing in the thread list shows that the question is waiting, though. The row looks like any other running thread, and the default sidebar dims it like one, so the question can go unseen for the whole run.
Change
client-runtime: presentThreadShell adds hasPendingAsyncQuestion, set for a non-blocking user_input request while the runtime is working. The status stays Working.
Web sidebar row and mobile thread list: while Working with an async question, the row shows the existing Input icon and label, in the same indigo, before the working spinner and timer, and the row isn't dimmed. The "Working" text is left out because the spinner and timer already say it; a thread with an active goal keeps its "Goal" label. The accessible label reads "Input, still working" or "Input, Goal".
Web folder rows, which show the status in place of the time: the Input marker sits before the status.
Status, sorting, snoozing and how blocking questions behave are all unchanged. Blocking questions, secret requests, approvals and Guest Request keep their existing precedence.
Scope and approval
This follows the #15258 triage, which said "A separate question marker while Working is optional" (comment). #15430 kept these threads Working on purpose; this adds the marker that the triage left open. It reuses the existing Input icon, label and colors, with no new status.
The same problem has since been filed as #24914, and #25155 and #24922 also address it. I've asked which implementation the team prefers in the comments.
Verification
entities.test.ts: an async question is flagged while the run works and cleared when it completes; blocking and legacy requests are never flagged. Sidebar.logic.test.ts: the Awaiting Input pill pairs with Working and Connecting, and doesn't show for subagent approval, Guest Request, or a missing/false flag. thread-row-emphasis.test.ts (mobile): Input shows only while the run keeps working, the row keeps full emphasis, Working goes unsaid beside Input while Goal stays, and the composed accessible label. Breaking any of these rules fails the tests.
After merging current main: vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck of 7 packages, the changed files' tests including the Chromium browser tests, React Compiler). Focused suites: client-runtime entities.test.ts 16/16, web Sidebar.logic.test.ts 67/67, mobile thread-row-emphasis.test.ts 4/4. Full suites: client-runtime 1464/1464, mobile 3006/3006, web 4813/4814. The one web failure, GuestPage.browser.test.tsx "follows the end as replies stream…", also fails on main without this change.
Manual check on an isolated dev server with real Codex threads (one async question plus a long sleep, one plain sleep), on the web sidebar and the iOS 27 simulator. Before/after screenshots below.
Not checked: Android. The screenshots predate the merge with main, which reworked the sidebar's and the mobile row's layouts; the marker itself is unchanged. Folder rows and the Goal label aren't pictured.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a contained cross-client UX update that surfaces an existing async-question state while preserving the thread’s Working behavior and other status semantics. The additive model flag and presentation-only changes have limited blast radius, with focused coverage for the new state and precedence.

The runtime thread shell now exposes pending async questions during active runs. Web and mobile thread rows use this state to display an Input indicator alongside working status and update row visibility and accessibility labels.

Working rows with a pending async question do not recede. They show an Input indicator, update title emphasis and accessibility text, and suppress the redundant Working label.

Working rows with a pending async question do not recede. They show an Input indicator and use a composed accessibility label in card and slim rows.

Explanation
The title "feat(clients): mark threads with an open async question while they keep working" names the main change: threads with a pending non-blocking question get a visible marker while staying in Working. The raw summary confirms the marker in the web sidebar, the legacy sidebar, and the mobile thread list, and the client-runtime flag that drives it. The title is specific and uses a conventional commit prefix, and it is 79 characters, which is within a normal title length.

…ep working
Since pingdotgg#15430 a thread whose run asks a non-blocking question stays Working
until the run ends, but nothing in the thread list shows the question is
waiting, and the default sidebar dims the row like any other running thread.
The thread shell now carries hasPendingAsyncQuestion. The web sidebar row and
the mobile thread list show the existing Input icon and label before the
working spinner and timer, and keep the row from receding. The legacy sidebar
shows the Awaiting Input pill beside Working. Status, ordering and blocking

The row's accessibilityLabel overrides the text screen readers would derive
from its children, so VoiceOver and TalkBack users couldn't tell which
working thread has a question waiting. Match the web row's "Input, still
working".

@juliusmarminge, I merged main at c1876b57 into this branch in fbeafad636. Local vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, both knip phases, seven affected-package typechecks, 89 tests across four files (including two Chromium tests), and eight React compiler checks. I haven’t rerun the interactive app walkthrough after this merge.
Could you confirm which implementation the team would prefer: this PR, #25155, or #24922? This one keeps Working and adds a separate Input marker without changing status, sorting, snoozing, or notifications.
If this approach is still wanted, could you review it or route it to the right maintainer? I’d like to avoid repeatedly updating overlapping implementations before the direction is settled.
The new head’s CI run shows action_required with no jobs started. Could you check whether the workflows need approval to run?

While an async question is open, the row hid its status label because the
spinner and timer already say Working. Upstream now labels a working thread
with an active goal "Goal", which carries more than Working, so hiding it
dropped the goal from the web card, the web and mobile accessible labels, and
the mobile row. Only the Working label is hidden now; a goal reads
"Input, Goal".

The row's rules for an open async question move into pure helpers beside
shouldRecedeThreadRow, so a test can check them without a render harness:
Input shows only while the run keeps working, the row keeps full emphasis,
Working goes unsaid beside Input while Goal stays, and the accessible label
reads "<title>, Input, still working" or "<title>, Input, Goal". Behavior is
unchanged.
