Problem

On macOS, Open in treats an editor as installed when its CLI is on PATH. The Cursor Agent CLI installs a ~/.local/bin/cursor shim that forwards to the IDE and fails without it ("No Cursor IDE installation found"), so Open in offers Cursor on Macs that do not have it. Apps with no CLI on PATH, such as Warp, or Xcode installed by Xcodes as Xcode-27.1.0.app, cannot be offered at all, and several requested apps are missing (#286, #19763, #19527, #7055).

Change

  • Detection (macOS). The server asks LaunchServices which bundle ids are registered, in one osascript call (about 200 ms for every app below, inside the existing 60 s discovery cache). Bundle ids, not URL schemes, because schemes resolve loosely: on my Mac idea:// opens Android Studio, xcode:// opens a helper inside an old Xcode, and Fork registers x-github-client:// and sourcetree://. An editor counts as installed when one of its apps is registered, or when a CLI on PATH resolves into an .app bundle that LaunchServices missed. A CLI outside any app does not count. If osascript cannot run, macOS falls back to today's PATH discovery. Linux and Windows are unchanged.
  • Launch. The registered app's own CLI first, so a PATH shim cannot intercept it, then PATH, otherwise open -b <bundle id>. Remote open on desktop uses the same check on the viewing Mac.
  • New apps. Bundle ids and CLI paths are checked against Homebrew casks and each app's Info.plist: Xcode (xed --line, follows xcode-select), Sublime Text (subl path:line:col), Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf, same bundle id), Android Studio (studio --line --column), Nova, BBEdit; terminals Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty, kitty, WezTerm, Warp; git clients GitHub Desktop, Fork, Sourcetree. WezTerm ignores folders handed over by LaunchServices and opens in the home folder, so it starts through wezterm start --cwd.
  • Folder-only apps. Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty and Warp declare a Shell role for scripts, and Terminal and Warp do run an executable file they are handed. Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty, kitty, WezTerm and the git clients get a file's folder, and file links, file menus and file previews do not offer them. A folder-only favorite stays the Open button's default but is not used for files. Warp opens other files in its own editor, so it stays a file target, and only a file with the executable bit opens its folder there. These apps sort after the file manager, so a Mac without editors still defaults to Finder.
  • JetBrains columns moved to fix(server): JetBrains IDEs open file links at the right column #22826. JetBrains IDEs count --column from 0, so until it lands Android Studio, like the other JetBrains IDEs, opens file:12:4 one column to the right.
  • Icons. CC0 marks from Simple Icons and SVG Logos in brand colors; Terminal is drawn like the existing Finder icon. Nova, BBEdit, kitty, GitHub Desktop and Fork have no vector mark I could find, so they use 64 px PNGs of the vendors' app icons (about 6 KB each, loaded as assets). Happy to swap or drop any of them.

Scope and approval

This needs maintainer direction: it changes how Open in detects editors and adds launch targets. Related: #7055, which tracks a configurable Open menu with discovery of installed apps; #19763 (Devin Desktop); #19527 (external terminals); #286. The single-app PRs #16066, #17925, #9220 and #11802 were closed pending approval. This puts them behind one detection change so the direction can be judged once.

If you would rather review it in pieces, I will split it into (1) LaunchServices detection with the shim fix, (2) new editors, and (3) terminals and git clients with the folder-only rule. A minimal fix for the Cursor shim alone is also ready if detection should stay PATH-based.

Verification

Tests. vp test run src/process/externalLauncher.test.ts in apps/server: 25 passed, after rebasing onto main with #22557's test cleanup. New cases: only registered apps are offered (a PATH cursor shim does not count); PATH fallback when LaunchServices fails; a CLI linked into an app that LaunchServices missed is accepted; the bundled CLI wins over a PATH shim; Terminal and WezTerm get the folder of a script, and Warp the folder of an executable but the file otherwise; Xcode xed --line; Sublime, Devin Desktop and Android Studio position syntax; Nova and BBEdit through open -b; JetBrains EAP bundle ids; Kiro's ide subcommand only for the PATH CLI. Two existing tests (keeps the macOS VS Code Insiders bundle out of stable VS Code, does not report the agy CLI as the Antigravity IDE on darwin) fail on a Mac that has VS Code or Antigravity IDE in /Applications, because they scan the real folder; they fail the same way on main. editorPreferences and fileContextMenu in apps/web: 8 passed, including a terminal favorite that is neither used nor replaced for files, and a Warp favorite that is used for files. window.test.ts in apps/desktop: 5 passed. Typecheck for contracts, shared, server, desktop and web, plus lint and format on the changed files: clean, apart from four no-empty-pattern warnings that main already has in externalLauncher.test.ts.

Live check. On macOS 26 I installed every listed app from its Homebrew cask, except JetBrains IDEs other than Android Studio, and opened a test repository through the server's real ExternalLauncher, checking the opened window and its status bar:

Apps Target Result
VS Code, VSCodium, Zed, Sublime Text, Devin Desktop, Trae, Antigravity IDE src/main.ts:12:4 line 12, column 4
Android Studio (in a project) src/main.ts:12:4 line 12, column 5; column 4 with #22826
Cursor, Kiro, Xcode src/main.ts:12:4 line 12 (Cursor and Kiro hide the column, xed has none)
Nova, BBEdit src/main.ts:12:4 the file, without a position (open -b)
VS Code Insiders folder the folder
Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty, kitty, WezTerm, Warp deploy.sh that creates a marker file the project folder; the marker never appeared
Warp src/main.ts:12 the file in Warp's editor, without a position
GitHub Desktop, Fork, Sourcetree folder the repository

As a control, open -b com.apple.Terminal deploy.sh ran the script, and open -b dev.warp.Warp-Stable ran any file with the executable bit, while a .sh without it opened in Warp's editor. Android Studio outside a project opens the file in LightEdit at 1:1, and studio --line 20 <file> does the same, so LightEdit ignores the line itself. Several apps show a first-run sign-in or onboarding screen over the opened file until it is dismissed.

Not checked: remote open from desktop, and WezTerm on Linux or Windows, where it is now found on PATH.

Open in, before (this Mac on main) and after (every app installed)

New icons, light and dark

A script handed to Terminal: through Open in, then the open -b control

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a broad macOS LaunchServices integration and many new editor, terminal, and git-client launch targets, while changing availability detection, file handling, and preferred-editor defaults. Its cross-cutting runtime behavior and product-default changes require maintainer review.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6be0e

Opening a terminal link to a directory can bypass a saved Terminal preference or report no usable editor. This is a narrow preference-path issue that merits owner awareness or follow-up but does not otherwise block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0253b

The change adds execution-sensitive terminal integrations but preserves the existing authorization boundary and applies server-side target checks. No new privilege bypass was established. Filesystem error and replacement cases remain unvalidated, so the assessment is not minimal risk.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The execution-sensitive scope is the selected server host and its process identity: launched applications inherit the host environment except ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE. Desktop remote probing does not itself extend terminal execution to the viewing Mac.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing server authorization boundary remains orchestration:operate. Requests cannot supply an arbitrary command through the editor field: the launcher selects a canonical definition and checks command availability before spawning. PATH and local application registration remain trusted host configuration, not authenticated application provenance.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Target classification is not fail-closed: stat failure preserves the original path, and classification precedes a separate application launch without a durable filesystem identity. Successful classification and repeated per-launch checks provide counterevidence, but do not establish execution safety during permission failures or concurrent replacement. Exploitation by a lower-authority actor was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For applications that can execute file targets, consider rejecting unknown target types rather than forwarding paths after classification failure. Prefer an explicit directory-opening interface where available, and validate permission-denial and replacement behavior on macOS before treating target conversion as a security guarantee.

…orts more of them

On macOS, Open in decided an editor was installed when its CLI was on PATH.
The Cursor Agent CLI's `cursor` shim made Cursor look installed without the
IDE, and apps without a CLI, like Warp, could not be offered at all.

On macOS the server now asks LaunchServices which apps are registered, by
bundle id, in one `osascript` call. An app counts as installed when it is
registered or when its CLI resolves into an app bundle; a CLI outside any app
does not count. Each app opens through its own bundled CLI when it has one,
otherwise through `open -b`. Linux and Windows keep PATH discovery, and so does
macOS when `osascript` cannot run.

This adds Xcode, Sublime Text, Devin Desktop, Android Studio, Nova and BBEdit,
plus terminals (Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty, kitty, WezTerm, Warp) and git
clients (GitHub Desktop, Fork, Sourcetree). Terminals run a script handed to
them, so these folder-only apps receive a file's folder, and file actions do not
offer them. WezTerm ignores folders handed over by LaunchServices, so it starts
through `wezterm start --cwd`.

Markdown file links pass a list already narrowed to file editors, so a saved
favorite like Warp looked uninstalled and was replaced by the first file
editor. A stored folder-only favorite now stays, whatever list the caller
passes.

… their folder

Warp has its own editor and opens source and text files there, so treating it
as folder-only hid it from file links and file menus. It runs a file with the
executable bit, though, so an executable target still opens its folder.
