Problem

Agents name files relative to wherever they were working. File chips join every relative path onto the thread's project root, so a chip points at a file that does not exist when the agent worked somewhere else (#10553):

  • a file in another checkout: cd ../app-b && cat src/api/rules/categories.ts, then `rules/categories.ts:2`
  • a worktree the agent made itself: it writes .worktrees/feature-b/docs/guide.md, then names `docs/guide.md`
  • a folder outside every project: cd /notes/meeting-42 && ls raw, then [recording](raw/recording.mp3). The audio panel says "Unable to load audio." for a file that plays fine.
  • a "No project" thread, whose root is an empty scratch folder

Probing other project roots or the workspace index reaches none of the last three, because those files are in no project and are often gitignored.

Change

The thread already records where the agent worked. A relative reference can now pick up a candidate from the thread's visible turn items, and the chip uses that candidate only when the root-joined file is missing.

  1. Collect paths (packages/shared/src/threadFilePaths.ts):
    • file_change paths;
    • dynamic_tool path inputs (file_path, path, …; Claude's Read, Glob and Grep) and viewed images;
    • file_search results;
    • the paths in command_execution inputs. Each command starts in the thread's root and follows a cd written in that same command. A cd inside a pipeline, after ||, or a bare cd/popd does not move it. Shell state is never carried between commands, since a provider shell does not keep a cd that leaves the workspace.
  2. Pick one candidate for a reference with a directory segment:
    • the one collected path that ends with it, matching whole segments;
    • failing that, a file inside the one collected folder outside the workspace that ends with the reference's folder. This is the ls raw → raw/recording.mp3 case.
    • Bare names, ../, ~/, several matches, or a root-joined path the thread itself touched produce no candidate.
  3. Verify before switching. The chip keeps the root-joined path while that file exists or its metadata is loading, exactly as today. The candidate takes over only once metadata confirms the joined path is missing and the candidate is present. A link that works today never moves.

Surfaces:

  • Web: ChatView builds the index, keyed by its contents so the React Compiler rebuilds it only when the thread names a new path. MessagesTimeline hands it to each row through ThreadFilePathsContext, next to the row context it already provides per row. ChatMarkdown attaches the candidate to the link metadata. ThreadFileLinkChip verifies it with the cached fileMetadata query that chips already make, so labels and thread search stay on the joined path.
  • Mobile: ThreadFeed verifies on press and rebinds the href before its link, media and menu handlers run. The rebound href is percent-encoded so it parses back to the same path. A superseded check is ignored.

Scope and approval

Fixes #10553, a triaged bug (bug, via-triage): triage comment.

The triage suggested probing other project roots, and warned against reconstructing Bash cd in the orchestrator and against letting a wrong join win over an existing file. The cases reported on the issue since then are a worktree under an ignored folder (comment), a folder outside every project (comment) and a "No project" thread (comment). None of those files is under a project root, so this PR takes the route those comments point to: the paths the thread itself recorded. It stays within the triage's warnings:

  • No orchestrator changes. Nothing new is recorded or sent. The client reads turn items it already has.
  • No shell model. A cd is followed only inside the one command string that contains it, never across commands.
  • An existing file wins. It uses the cheap metadata check chips already make, not readFile, and it switches only when the joined path is confirmed missing. This is also the rule from the review of fix(web): resolve slashed file-chip paths through the workspace index #8254.

Relation to #20071. #20071 covers #8251, a file one folder down inside the workspace, with a click-time index search. This PR covers the cases that PR's own notes say it can't reach: other checkouts, gitignored folders, folders outside every project, and "No project" threads. The two compose: a link this PR leaves alone can still be rescued at click time. Both touch ChatMarkdown's chip wiring, so whichever lands second needs a rebase.

Verification

Live, on web against isolated dev state. A dummy repo app-a with a gitignored worktree, a second repo app-b, and an outside folder holding a real 4-second mp3. Claude Sonnet 5.5 performed the tool calls itself and replied with relative paths:

chip main this branch
rules/categories.ts:2 app-a/rules/categories.ts (missing) app-b/src/api/rules/categories.ts:2
[recording](raw/recording.mp3) app-a/raw/recording.mp3, "Unable to load audio." /notes/meeting-42/raw/recording.mp3, plays (4 s)
docs/guide.md app-a/docs/guide.md (missing) app-a/.worktrees/feature-b/docs/guide.md
src/index.ts (a deleted copy was touched; the root file exists) app-a/src/index.ts app-a/src/index.ts, unchanged

After rebasing onto 1451e7cb2, I re-ran this thread on the rebased branch. All four chips resolved as in the table, and the recording loaded with a 4 s duration and no media error.

Before/after tooltips (top: main, bottom: this branch):

recording.mp3 chip
categories.ts chip
guide.md chip
index.ts chip, unchanged

Opening the recording, on main and on this branch:

audio on main
audio on this branch

Replay of real threads. I ran the resolver over 139 Claude threads from my own T3 database (277 distinct relative file references), checking every target on disk:

  • 13 links that are broken on main now open an existing file;
  • all 264 other links resolve exactly as on main;
  • no link moves from one existing file to another, and none regresses to a missing file.

The original "Unable to load audio." thread is among the 13.

Tests:

  • vp test run packages/shared/src/threadFilePaths.test.ts apps/web/src/markdown-links.test.ts passes. It covers the issue's repro cases, cd handling (pipelines, ||, bare cd, popd, quoting), whole-segment matching, ambiguity, the in-workspace folder guard, Windows paths, :line positions, and markdown files keeping file-relative links.
  • I also ran the full test scripts of the three touched packages: @t3tools/shared (1745 passed, 1 skipped), @t3tools/mobile (3384 passed, 5 skipped, including reactCompilerCoverage) and @t3tools/web's unit project (7033 passed, including reactCompilerCoverage). From the web browser project, the MessagesTimeline and ChatMarkdown* suites pass (148 tests); I did not run the rest of it.
  • Matching is indexed by name: 100 unmatched references against 5,000 thread paths take 0.25 ms per pass, and building the index takes about 10 ms.
  • Typecheck is clean for @t3tools/shared, @t3tools/web and @t3tools/mobile.
  • Lint on the touched files reports the same warnings as main, the new files lint clean, and vp fmt --check is clean. Neither the web nor the mobile changes use useMemo or useCallback, and the React Compiler coverage tests pass for both.

Adversarial review. GPT-6.1-Sol in Codex reviewed an earlier version. Its findings led to:

  • the verify-before-switching rule;
  • the pipeline and || handling;
  • starting each command in the thread's root;
  • indexed lookups (its benchmark went from ~369 ms to 0.25 ms);
  • mobile encoding, stale-press and menu fixes.

Not checked:

  • Mobile on a device or simulator; only types, lint and unit tests.
  • Desktop, which wraps web.
  • Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and Grok threads. The collector reads their file_change and command items the same way, but I only ran Claude.
  • A candidate can still change when a later turn adds an ambiguous path, but only for a link that is broken on main.
  • A cd carried over from an earlier command, which Claude keeps inside the workspace, is not followed. The verify-before-switching rule keeps a wrong guess from replacing a working link.

Fixed in cfb4dd5. A cd that resolves now records its folder, so cd ../meeting/raw && ls indexes /repos/meeting/raw. Tests cover the folder being recorded and a later raw/… reference matching it.

🟡 Medium threads/ThreadFeed.tsx:1966

On the first context-menu opening for a relative link that resolves outside the workspace, the menu displays the original href's target but its actions use the asynchronously verified absolute candidate. Selecting “Copy relative path” then does nothing because resolveWorkspaceRelativeFilePath returns null for that outside-workspace file. Build the menu and run its actions against the same target, or preserve the displayed target for that menu.

Fixed in cfb4dd5. The menu now remembers the href it showed, and its actions run on that href synchronously. Copy, open and save always act on the path in the menu's title. Once the check finishes, the next menu shows the verified file, and tapping the chip opens the verified file as before.

commandPaths drops quoted relative operands containing spaces, so cat "docs/my guide.md" after cd /other never indexes /other/docs/my guide.md; a later docs/my guide.md reference therefore cannot recover that candidate. Fixed in cfb4dd5, with your pattern. Unquoted words are already split on whitespace, so spaces only get through from quoted words. Added a test for cd /other && cat "docs/my guide.md".

Fixed in cfb4dd5. I took a slightly different route than the suggested cleanup: each check now records the environment and thread it started in, and runs its action only if the feed is still on that thread and mounted. A cleanup that only listed the IDs as dependencies added an "extra effect dependencies" lint warning.

📝 Walkthrough

The change collects file paths from thread activity and matches relative Markdown references against them. Web rendering and mobile link actions use candidate paths when metadata confirms the candidate exists and the workspace-joined path does not.

Changes: Thread-aware file links

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extract and index thread file paths
packages/shared/src/threadFilePaths.ts, packages/shared/src/threadFilePaths.test.ts, packages/shared/package.json
The shared package collects paths from thread items and command executions, builds a path index, and matches relative references. Tests cover extraction, matching, and link-resolution cases.
Resolve Markdown links against thread paths
packages/shared/src/markdownLinks.ts, apps/web/src/markdown-links.ts, apps/web/src/markdown-links.test.ts
The shared and web resolvers accept a thread path index. Web link metadata can include a thread candidate. Tests cover matching and fallback behavior.
Provide and verify web link candidates
apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, apps/web/src/threadFilePathsContext.ts, apps/web/src/components/ChatMarkdown.tsx, apps/web/src/hooks/useFileMetadata.ts
ChatView provides the thread path index to Markdown rendering. Candidate links query metadata for both paths and select the candidate only when the original is missing and the candidate exists.
Bind mobile link actions
apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx
ThreadFeed checks workspace and thread candidate paths before link presses and menu actions. It retains the original href when metadata checks do not confirm a candidate path.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1cc8d

File links retain their original target if verification fails. The first mobile menu acts on the path it displays; no actionable merge risk remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1cc8d

Relative file links can now select files outside the workspace, but they continue through existing file-opening mechanisms and access controls. A narrow mobile lifecycle gap allows an outstanding lookup to complete after its path-selection context changes. No cross-environment access or authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Mobile binding maps are replaced when the workspace root or indexed paths change, but outstanding link checks are not invalidated by those changes. A delayed completion can therefore dispatch navigation using the obsolete selection context. This weakens resource-identity containment across context transitions, although environment/thread guards remain and no authorization bypass was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The effective target-selection scope can extend beyond the current checkout to other paths named by thread activity within the selected environment. Workspace membership is not the authorization boundary: existing absolute-link actions already accept such targets. No cross-environment propagation was established, and server-side enforcement remains unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Agent-influenced tool and command paths now affect relative-link target selection. For ordinary joined targets, web substitution requires successful metadata results showing the original missing and the candidate present. Candidate actions continue through existing user-triggered preview, editor, reveal, and navigation handlers rather than an automatic content-open operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Mobile suppresses superseded presses and completions after leaving the environment/thread. Its completion guard does not include the root and path-index identities used to scope binding storage; this is the bounded lifecycle concern, not evidence of broader privilege gain.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind delayed mobile completions to the same complete scope identity as their binding maps, so a root or path-index transition can discard obsolete work before navigation.

Explanation

Issue #10553 requires relative file references to resolve to the file recorded from the agent's work outside the thread workspace. The PR collects paths from visible turn items, follows cd only within each command, selects unambiguous directory matches, preserves line positions, and keeps the workspace target when it exists. Web and mobile apply the candidate only after the workspace target is confirmed missing. Tests cover path collection, command parsing, ambiguity, outside folders, Markdown links, inline-code links, and existing-file precedence.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #10553. Shared path collection and matching, Markdown metadata, metadata verification, web context wiring, mobile link handling, and supporting tests implement the requested file-reference resolution. No unrelated change is established by the reviewed change summary.

Bind the first menu action before using its file target.

When the first menu opens for a relative href, known is undefined. The menu saves the original href while bindThreadFileHref checks the candidate. Its open and copy actions continue to use that original href, even if the check finishes before the user selects an action. Resolve the pending binding for the selected action, or update the menu target when verification completes.

The native menu is built synchronously, and its title shows the path it was built from. An earlier review on this PR flagged the opposite problem: actions that switched to the verified candidate while the menu still named the joined path, so "Copy relative path" silently did nothing for an outside file. Running actions on the href the menu showed keeps the title and the actions on the same file. Once verification finishes, the next menu shows the verified file, and tapping the chip opens the verified file as before.

@yair Thanks for clarifying. I withdraw this finding.

menuFileHrefs keeps the menu actions on the file named by the menu title. Switching to the verified candidate during an action would break that consistency. After verification, the next menu uses the verified href. Chip presses still use withBoundFileHref.

Learning: In apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx, native file-chip menus are built synchronously. menuFileHrefs captures the href shown when the menu is built, and menu actions intentionally use that captured href, even if candidate verification finishes afterward. This keeps the menu title, available actions, and action target consistent; switching targets mid-action can make "Copy relative path" silently do nothing for an outside-workspace candidate. Subsequent menus use the verified binding, while chip presses use withBoundFileHref.

Scripts: t3dev starts the dev server in a session of its own with the live

exactly that session; shot.mjs drives the app from JSON steps, redacts

Verify candidate-only links before rendering the chip.

When cwd has no project root, a unique thread match can become the main target without a threadCandidate. The web renderer then skips ThreadFileLinkChip and exposes the path directly. A stale named path or folder-inferred path can therefore produce an actionable chip for a file that no longer exists. Route candidate-only results through metadata verification and suppress them when the candidate is missing.

@coderabbitai On the two outside-diff findings about candidates with no workspace root (markdown-links.ts around resolveMarkdownFileLinkMeta, and ThreadFeed.tsx checkThreadFileHref): I'm keeping both as they are, on purpose.

  • With no workspace root there is no joined path, so there is no working link that a wrong guess could replace. On main that link has no target at all.
  • A chip has never meant the file exists. On main, every relative path renders as a chip to its root-joined target without a metadata check. If the target is missing, opening it shows the not-found preview with the path, which is the same as for any other chip.
  • The verify-before-switching rule exists so that a working link never moves. Here there's nothing to move away from.
  • The suggested web fix returns null until the check passes, which would drop the link's text from the message while the check loads, and for good if the file is missing.

Verification still applies wherever a joined path exists, which covers every thread with a project or a scratch folder.

@yair Thanks for clarifying. I withdraw both outside-diff findings.

The inspected branches match your explanation:

  • resolveMarkdownFileLinkMeta returns candidate metadata when there is no normal target.
  • checkThreadFileHref binds the candidate directly when joined === null.

With no workspace root, there is no existing joined-path link to preserve. A file chip does not guarantee that its target exists. I incorrectly extended the verify-before-switching rule to this case.

The distinction is between assigning a target where none exists and replacing an existing target. The latter still requires verification. Neither finding requires a code change.

Learning: In apps/web/src/markdown-links.ts resolveMarkdownFileLinkMeta and apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx checkThreadFileHref, direct candidate binding without a workspace root is intentional. There is no joined-path target to preserve in that case. File chips do not guarantee file existence; a missing target can open the normal not-found preview. Verification before switching protects an existing joined-path target: when one exists, retain it unless metadata confirms it is missing and the candidate exists. Do not require candidate existence verification merely to assign a target when no joined-path target exists.

Learning: In apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadFeed.tsx, when no workspace root is available, a unique thread file candidate can be bound as an absolute href through fileLinkHref. The existing onMarkdownLinkPress absolute-path branch handles that href; binding does not require a separate cwd or conversion to a relative path.

Rebased onto d8e9fd267. #21268 moved ThreadFeed onto the React Compiler, so I squashed this PR's four commits into one and ported the mobile change to that style: plain functions instead of useMemo/useCallback. The per-chip caches now live in a ref that resets when the thread, root or path index changes, and only handlers touch it. Behaviour is unchanged. Typecheck, the focused suites and both React Compiler coverage tests pass.

…the workspace

Agents name files relative to wherever they were working, but file
chips join every relative path onto the thread's project root. A file
in another checkout, in a worktree the agent made itself, in a folder
outside every project, or touched from a "No project" thread becomes a
path that does not exist (pingdotgg#10553).

The thread already records where the agent worked: file_change paths,
tool inputs such as Claude's Read, search results, and the paths in
the commands it ran, read against the folder each command ran in. A
relative reference with a directory segment gets a candidate from those
paths: the one named path ending with it, or else a file inside the one
named folder outside the workspace that ends with its folder. The
joined path keeps the chip while it exists or is loading; the candidate
takes over only once metadata confirms the joined path missing and the
candidate present, so a link that works today never moves. Web checks
with the metadata query chips already make; mobile checks on press.

Fixes pingdotgg#10553

Review follow-ups folded in: a relative `cd` records its folder and quoted
relative names may contain spaces; on mobile, concurrent checks for one
chip share a request, a thread with no workspace root uses its candidate
as web does, bindings reset when the thread or root changes, and a menu's
actions use the file the menu showed.

MessagesTimeline already gives every row its own provider, because a provider
around the list re-renders the outgoing thread's rows with the incoming
thread's context. The path index now rides the same way.

Taking over this one as maintainer. Thanks @yair for identifying that the thread already holds the paths needed to recover these links, including ignored worktrees and folders outside any project.

I’m rebuilding it as a small stack on current main: shared evidence/candidate policy first, then verified web/mobile action targets. Existing root files will retain priority, and menus and media must use the same verified target. I’ll compare the finished stack with this PR’s original scope, credit your work, and link both layers before closing this PR. Nothing will be merged as part of this takeover.

Thanks @yair for the thread-evidence idea, the outside-checkout investigation, and the native menu race analysis. I rebuilt this as two reviewable layers because evidence collection and reactive client selection/lifetime handling are separate concerns:

  • #21927: conservative thread-derived file candidates.
  • #21928: verified selection and consistent web/mobile actions and media, including menu snapshots.

I compared the complete original diff against the stack. Command/tool/file/search evidence, same-command cd handling, outside and ignored directories, path positions, root precedence, ambiguity, rootless behavior, menu rebinding and media all remain covered. Permanent href maps were replaced with reactive metadata queries; rootless candidates now require verification instead of bypassing it. The original 31 test definitions (33 expanded cases in two standalone files) are replaced by 10 definitions in three existing suites. No new server or wire state was introduced.

The stack incorporates current main’s repo-prefix fallback and has one clean final full-stack round on both Opus and Sol. Linux app proof includes actual sibling file content at line 2, clipboard writes, ignored files, root precedence, ambiguity, document-relative links, scratch-workspace files, and a four-second outside WAV played to completion. The new bodies contain before/after images and a recording.

The iOS action-sheet presentation change is explicitly marked as a human landing decision, and native platforms/live providers/remote modes remain unverified. The coordinator owns those decisions and landing; nothing has been merged. Closing this original in favor of the linked stack.

Implementation: Codex GPT-6.1-Sol; tests: Codex GPT-6-Astra; independent reviews: Claude Code Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6-Sol.
