Heads up: one last small push is coming for two Android bugs found on device. The back arrow in filter submenus (Environment, Project) doesn't take taps on the glyph, and the composer can lay out under the keyboard when you switch back to the app with the keyboard open. After that I'll leave this alone. |

Three tabs (Chats, PRs, Settings) in the bottom bar and the navigation rail. The rail carries New thread and expands to a modal; phones keep a New thread FAB 16dp from the corner. Search and Filter live in the list header in every layout, and pull requests keep their quick filter pills. While the thread composer has the soft keyboard in split view, the rail and sidebar step aside, the header drops to one line, and the composer stays one row. The model picker shows its name until the draft has text, then shrinks to the provider icon. Rebased onto the shared mobile UI layer: the compact header now renders through the native app bar. Co-authored-by: Theo Browne <me@t3.gg>
The composer stays one row on every layout and platform, with the model picker in the row. The picker shows the model name while the draft is empty and eases down to the provider icon once it has text. When the draft would wrap, it stacks above the controls and shows two to four lines before scrolling; it returns to the row once it fits again.
Chats, PRs, and Settings are top-level destinations, so switching them fades the outgoing tab out and the incoming tab in, in both the bottom bar and the rail. Settings fades in rather than pushing, and Home stays blank beneath it instead of flashing Chats on the way.
A long model name, such as a Nebius-hosted Qwen model, pushed Send past the edge of the row on narrow screens. The picker now caps its width in the one-row composer and truncates the name; the card keeps the full width.
…short The previous fixed cap clipped names like Claude Opus 5.5 even on wide screens. The one-row draft now keeps at least 40% of the row and the model name truncates only past that. Beside the provider icon, the name also drops brand words the icon already shows, so it leads with the model and version (Opus 5.5).
The one-row width was only measured while the composer was on one row, so a draft that stacked when a split pane narrowed stayed stacked after the pane widened again. The row width is now tracked in both layouts. The draft also reflows right at the edge of the row instead of 16pt early.
…d keyboard Menu row icons are React Native views hosted in the native row, and they swallowed taps over the glyph, so a submenu's Back arrow did nothing when tapped directly. The icons now run their row's action. Returning to the app with the composer still focused restores the keyboard without any keyboard event, and the resume quarantine kept the composer under it. An input that keeps focus through the switch is now exempt; the stranded case it guards against always starts with a blur.
The Settings tab helpers took WorkspaceTab from features, adding an upward lib -> features import that the mobile dependency graph caps. They now live beside the tab state in features/workspace, and lib is back to its main version.
On phones, scrolling the chat or pull request list down slides the list header up behind the status bar and drops the bottom bar off the screen, on the same cue that shrinks the New thread FAB. The first scroll up brings both back. The FAB rises out of the gesture area while the bar is gone. Switching tabs shows the chrome again, and split view is unchanged.
Choosing an environment was the only filter that left the header's filter icon looking inactive.
Hiding or showing the header moves the list under a finger that is still dragging, which reads as a scroll the other way and flipped the chrome back, over and over. Offsets now only re-anchor until the transition has settled, and the chrome stays until the list is past the header, so its shift can never land the list back at the top as a pull to refresh. The New thread FAB follows the same state.
Settling and a minimum scroll still let a slow drag flicker the header and bottom bar, and made hiding feel late. Moving the bars changes the list's layout, which under a dragging finger reads as a scroll the other way. The scroll direction is still tracked live and drives the New thread FAB, but the bars now move only when no finger is on the list: during a fling, or as soon as a drag ends. The settle window and the minimum offset are gone.
Hiding the header and bottom bar resized the list under a dragging finger, which read as a scroll the other way and flipped the bars back. Waiting for the finger to lift fixed the flicker but felt wrong. The bars now float over the list and slide away; the list pads its content by their height and never moves. Direction changes take effect mid-drag in either direction, and pull to refresh starts below the header.
Three things moved the PR list when switching back to it: - The PR header used the 64dp native app bar while Chats uses the 56dp list toolbar, so the floating header's padding changed after mount and nudged the list. The PR header now uses the list toolbar height. - Restoring the saved position fired a scroll that hid the bars. Until the list is dragged, scroll events now only move the anchor. - The restore used an index anchor, and LegendList adds the list header to index restores, so every return landed one header lower. It now restores the plain offset, like the chat list, and the unused anchor API is gone.

The Android header menu includes the environment filter, but Reset stayed disabled when only an environment was selected and didn't clear it. The iOS menu, which keeps the environment as a separate pill, is unchanged.

Taking over this one. Thanks @PixPMusic, this is a thorough piece of work. I'm going to rebuild it as a few smaller PRs (navigation chrome, hide on scroll, the composer, and the two small Android fixes) so each can be reviewed on its own, and I'll link them here when they're up. |
|
Thanks @PixPMusic. This PR got the direction right: a three-tab bar and a wide rail in place of the floating Filter and gear, Settings as a destination, and a one-row composer. Your device findings (the menu glyphs eating taps, the restored keyboard after a resume, the rail's label swap at the midpoint, the LegendList index-restore offset) saved a lot of guessing. I rebuilt it as smaller PRs so each concern can be reviewed and landed on its own:
I compared this PR's diff against those four. Not carried over yet:
Every PR keeps you as co-author. |
Problem
Android navigation chrome takes a large share of the screen. On phones, the bottom bar sits under a floating Filter button stacked on a floating New thread button, all over the thread list. On foldables and tablets, an 80dp rail holds only Chats and PRs, while Filter and New thread still float over the sidebar and Settings is a header gear. When the bottom bar first landed, @juliusmarminge pointed out that the chrome covered about a third of the screen.
Change
Phones: the bottom bar holds three tabs: Chats, PRs, and Settings. Search and Filter sit in the list header, and Filter stays visible while a search is open, so search results can still be filtered. New thread is the only floating button, at Material's 16dp corner margin.
Split view and tablets: a Material 3 wide navigation rail (96dp) shows the same three tabs, centered vertically. Its menu button and New thread are top-aligned, as Material recommends. The menu button expands the rail over the list as a modal, with full labels such as "Pull Requests", without reflowing the panes.
Settings tab: Settings opens as a full workspace page from either surface instead of from a header gear. Nested settings pages keep normal Back, and choosing a list tab returns to it.
Tab transitions: Chats, PRs, and Settings are top-level destinations, so switching between them uses Material 3's fade-through in both the bottom bar and the rail. Settings fades in instead of pushing, and Home stays blank under it rather than flashing Chats.
Hide on scroll (phones): scrolling the chat or pull request list down slides the list header up behind the status bar and the bottom bar off the screen, on the same cue that shrinks the New thread FAB; scrolling up brings them back. Both bars float over a list that never moves (it pads its content by their height), so reversing mid-drag works and a slow drag can't flicker: a list that shifted under the finger read the shift as a scroll the other way. Pull to refresh starts below the header. Switching tabs shows the bars again, and split view is unchanged.
PR filters: the PR list publishes its existing filter menu to the PR header, so both lists use the same header layout.
Rail motion: labels switch between "PRs" and "Pull Requests" at the rail item's invisible midpoint and stay transparent while sliding across their icons. Collapsing starts on tap, so labels and New thread finish before the modal rail closes.
Composer: the thread composer stays one row on every layout and platform, with the model picker in the row. The picker shows the model name while the draft is empty and eases down to the provider icon once it has text. When the draft would wrap, it stacks above the controls and shows two to four lines before scrolling; it returns to the row once it fits again. The turn timer stays in the pill above the composer.
Typing in split view: ported from feat(mobile): Android drops the rail, bottom bar, and rounded sheets for a denser layout #19424 (credit @t3dotgg). While the thread composer has the soft keyboard, the rail and sidebar step aside and the thread header drops to one line. Closing the keyboard brings the sidebar back.
PR filters: the PR header's filter button opens the full menu and fills while filters are active. The row of quick pills (state, involvement, labels) stays under the header, minus the pill that duplicated the header button, and lines up with the list rows.
Apart from the composer, this is an alternative to #19424 (and #18686), which removes the rail and bottom bar instead of slimming them down.
Scope and approval
This follows Julius's feedback on the screen space the Android chrome uses. I don't have a link to an approval of this specific direction, and #19424 takes the opposite approach, so maintainers will need to pick one. The navigation changes are Android-only; shared files are gated on
Platform.OS === "android"or only add the Settings tab title. The composer change is shared with iOS, where it was checked on the iPhone Duo's front screen and unfolded in both orientations.Verification
