When the relay held a link as publish-only but this computer still had its managed tunnel config, Settings > Connections showed T3 Connect as on. Turning it on did nothing, so there was no way to repair the link from Settings, and phones got endpoint_provider_not_managed.

Fix

  • Settings now also checks this environment's record from the relay discovery list. If the relay holds the link as publish-only, T3 Connect shows as off with a note that it is out of sync. Turning it on relinks as managed and repairs it. Onboarding with "expose" on repairs it the same way.
  • If discovery has no record (signed out, refreshing, or not loaded yet), Settings uses the local value as before. A healthy managed link is never shown as off because of a missing record.
  • The client error for endpoint_provider_not_managed now tells the user to turn T3 Connect on in Settings > Connections on that computer, instead of showing the raw reason.

The user's link and secrets are not deleted. Repair uses the existing managed link flow.

Proof

  • New useCloudLinkController.test.tsx case: local managed + relay manual shows off and relinks as managed. It failed before the fix (the toggle read true). It also fails if only the relink check is reverted. A second case confirms a link the relay also holds as managed is not relinked.
  • errors.test.ts checks the new endpoint_provider_not_managed text.
  • Focused tests pass (web 12/12, client-runtime 13/13). Typecheck, lint, and format are clean for apps/web and packages/client-runtime.
  • Not checked: a live relay or the real desktop app.

Settings showed T3 Connect as on whenever the local tunnel config existed,
even if the relay held the link as publish-only. Turning it on skipped the
relink, so the link could not be repaired and clients got
endpoint_provider_not_managed.

The controller now also checks the relay record from discovery. A link the
relay holds as publish-only shows as off with an out-of-sync note, and
turning T3 Connect on relinks it as managed. The client error for
endpoint_provider_not_managed now says how to fix it.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at e79e2af

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped bug fix that reconciles local T3 Connect state with relay discovery, repairs publish-only drift through the existing link flow, and improves the corresponding user-facing error guidance. Regression tests cover the repaired and already-healthy cases, with no schema, deployment, default, or static-analysis changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The controller now uses the primary environment’s relay provider kind to determine managed-tunnel state and reconciliation behavior. Settings and relay error messaging identify when the endpoint is not relay-managed and direct users to enable T3 Connect.

Changes: Managed tunnel state and repair

Layer / File(s) Summary
Relay-aware tunnel detection and reconciliation
apps/web/src/cloud/useCloudLinkController.ts, apps/web/src/cloud/useCloudLinkController.test.tsx
The controller checks the relay provider kind when determining whether a managed tunnel is active, reports out-of-sync state, and uses the relay-aware status during reconciliation. Tests cover manual and cloudflare_tunnel provider kinds.
Settings and relay error guidance
apps/web/src/components/settings/ConnectionsSettings.tsx, packages/client-runtime/src/relay/errorPresentation.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/errors.test.ts
Settings describes the out-of-sync state and directs users to enable T3 Connect. The relay error message for endpoint_provider_not_managed gives related guidance, which the test checks.

Explanation

Issue #11899 requires relay-state detection and a way to restore a managed link. The controller now uses the relay provider kind, detects local managed plus relay publish-only state, relinks when the toggle is enabled, preserves the local fallback when discovery has no record, and updates the shared endpoint_provider_not_managed message. The added tests cover the detection and relink behavior. The PR does not add the issue's always-available Re-link or Repair action. It also does not explain, when the user disables T3 Connect while publishing remains enabled, that the link becomes publish-only and requires publishing to be disabled for a full unlink. The diff does not add a desktop connections-list-specific error presentation or test.

Resolution

Implement a Re-link or Repair action in Settings > Connections that always invokes the managed link flow. Add the required publish-only and full-unlink explanation to the T3 Connect UI. Ensure the desktop connections list presents actionable endpoint_provider_not_managed guidance, and add tests for these behaviors.
