Problem

  • Since v1.4.0, assert.partialDeepStrictEqual ignores a cause that the expected Error inherits. An expected cause: undefined rejects an actual error with a cause. Node v26.3.0 compares the first and accepts the second.
  • errorSubset and mapSubset (src/jsc/modules/NodeUtilTypesModule.cpp:566, :400) compare a pair, then a later walk compares it again. That costs 2^depth for an enumerable message, name, cause or errors, and for Maps that share an object key. 20 levels take 0.5 s and 0.3 s.

Fix

  • errorSubset now follows the Error arm of Node's comparisons.js. The new isEnumerableOrIdentical skips a key that the expected error owns as enumerable, before any read. mapSubset skips the entry its lookup compared.
  • Correct because Node makes the same test first. 1,936 key placements and 106 container shapes now match Node.
  • Verified: test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts (44 new tests, 28 fail on main). Also test/js/node/assert/ and the vendored test-assert*.js.
  • Self-reviewed: 9 concerns raised, 8 addressed. Not done: a rebase of assert.partialDeepStrictEqual: compare DOMExceptions by name, message and cause #39306, another change.

Background

  • partialDeepStrictEqual(actual, expected) passes when actual contains expected.
  • message, cause and errors are normally non-enumerable. err.cause = inner makes an enumerable property.
  • Considered a skip inside the old loop. Bun's key order then lets a getter hide a key from both steps.

Downsides

  • Assertions that pass today can fail: an inherited expected cause is now compared. No issue reports this.
  • Binary: +1,280 bytes of text. A plain Error pair takes 2,740 instructions (main: 3,027), a Map pair 8 to 62 more.
  • Still 2^depth: an enumerable cause in assert.deepStrictEqual and expect().toEqual() (bindings.cpp:1831). Three test.failing rows record it.
Notes

How this was found

A comparison of Bun against Node v26.3.0 during the review of #35495 found it. No issue reports it.

Results that change (all cause)

assert.partialDeepStrictEqual(actual, expected) Node v26.3.0 Bun v1.3.14 v1.4.0 to main this PR
expected inherits a cause of 1, actual has a cause of 2 throws throws passes throws
expected has cause: undefined, actual has a cause of 1 passes throws throws passes

The double comparison of Error keys

const assert = require("node:assert");
let reads = 0;
const make = inner => Object.defineProperty(new Error("x"), "errors", { get() { reads++; return inner; }, enumerable: true, configurable: true });
function nest(depth) { let e = make([]); for (let i = 0; i < depth; i++) e = make([e]); return e; }
for (const depth of [1, 3, 11, 16]) {
  reads = 0;
  assert.partialDeepStrictEqual(nest(depth), nest(depth));
  console.log(`depth ${depth}: ${reads} reads of errors`);
}
reads of errors depth 1 depth 3 depth 11 depth 16
Node v26.3.0 4 8 24 34
main (384a388) 12 60 16380 524284
this PR 4 8 24 34

The numbers are the same for an enumerable cause, message and name. This cost is not new: v1.3.14 has it too.

Time per call for a chain built with outer.cause = inner, release builds:

depth 1 2 4 8 12
main 0.57 us 1.4 us 6.3 us 106 us 1.7 ms
this PR 0.3 us 0.5 us 0.9 us 1.8 us 2.9 us

So the saving is a few microseconds at the depths that real code has. It reaches 1 ms near depth 12.

The double comparison in mapSubset

mapSubset looks an expected key up in the actual Map and compares the two values. If they differ and the key is an object, it scans every actual entry for another match. The scan met the entry of the lookup again and compared the same values a second time.

const key = {};
const nest = leaf => { let value = { leaf }; for (let i = 0; i < 20; i++) value = new Map([[key, value]]); return value; };
assert.partialDeepStrictEqual(nest(1), nest(2)); // throws on every runtime

Time until it throws: Node v26.3.0 0.2 ms, Bun v1.3.14 0.7 ms, v1.4.0 to main 279 ms to 323 ms, this PR under 0.1 ms. A getter on the leaf is read 4, 32 and 1024 times at depth 1, 4 and 9 on main. Node and this PR read it 2 times.

Measurements (release builds of 384a388 and of this PR, linux x64)

  • Placement matrix: 0 of 1,936 results differ from Node v26.3.0 (main: 123).
  • Container shapes: 53 ways to nest a value (object, array, Map, Set, Error, Date, typed array and more), with an equal and a different leaf, at depth 1, 4 and 9. 0 of 106 rows differ from Node in result or in leaf reads (main: 10).
  • ErrorInstance own-property lookups per pair: plain 7 (main 6), hidden cause 9 (main 9).
  • User instructions per call, main against PR: plain Error pair 3,027 against 2,740, TypeError 3,102 against 2,846, hidden cause 3,812 against 3,210, enumerable cause 4,505 against 3,626, 3 enumerable properties 5,398 against 5,131. Map with string keys 1,616 against 1,624, Map with a shared object key 1,170 against 1,179, Map with an equal object key 5,295 against 5,357. Counted with perf_event_open between 1,000,000 and 2,000,000 calls, lowest of 3 runs.
  • Text: errorSubset with the helper inlined is 2,998 bytes (main 1,952). mapSubset adds 208 bytes. Total text is +1,280 bytes (140,284,316 to 140,285,596).
  • Heap objects after 100,000 calls: no growth per call on main or on the PR.
  • BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1: 0 reports across the 537 tests of deep-equal.test.ts and assert.test.cjs.
  • Host functions: +0. Binding table rows: +0.

What still differs from Node

  • Node reads a hidden key of the expected error two or three times for one comparison. Bun reads it once, as before. The result differs only when a getter returns another value on the next read, or when a getter of the actual error rewrites the same key of the expected error. In 221,920 generated pairs whose getters change another key, 95 differ from Node (main: 25,250). 7 of the 95 agreed with Node on main.
  • A hidden cause that refers to its own error: Node throws a RangeError, Bun reports equal. Not changed here.
  • A DOMException pair does not take this path. assert.partialDeepStrictEqual: compare DOMExceptions by name, message and cause #39306 adds that.

Left out on purpose

The other comparator (specialObjectsDequalSlow in src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp) compares cause at line 1831 and then walks the enumerable keys, so it compares an enumerable cause twice per level. It backs assert.deepStrictEqual, assert.deepEqual, util.isDeepStrictEqual, Bun.deepEquals and expect().toEqual(). A getter is read 6, 30 and 1022 times per side at depth 1, 3 and 8. Node reads 2, 4 and 9. A chain of 20 takes 755 ms in expect().toEqual().

The rule of this PR does not fit there. That walk takes its keys from the actual value and finds hidden and inherited keys on the other side. #35495 rewrites that arm for errors and leaves cause as it is. Three test.failing rows in deep-equal.test.ts hold Node's read counts for assert.deepStrictEqual, assert.deepEqual and util.isDeepStrictEqual. They turn red when someone fixes it.

Self-review

9 concerns, 8 addressed:

  1. mapSubset had the same double comparison. Fixed here.
  2. The double comparison of cause in the other comparator had no owner. Three test.failing rows record it.
  3. The body led with the speed and hid the result changes. Rewritten.
  4. No test failed when the check for an own key (slotBase() == expectedObject) was removed. The placement test covers inherited enumerable keys now.
  5. No test rejected a pair that differs only in a hidden message, name or cause. The placement test and more rows cover it. Each of 35 one-clause variants of the new code now fails a test. Before, 12 passed.
  6. Only three rows checked the placement results. A test now compares 5,476 placements with Node's rule. The same test passes on Node.
  7. No test covered a getter or a Proxy trap that throws. Four tests added.
  8. getNonIndexPropertySlot and method-table lookups make the change 4,352 bytes smaller. Done.
  9. Not done: drop the errorSubset hunk from assert.partialDeepStrictEqual: compare DOMExceptions by name, message and cause #39306 and rebase it on this branch. That would make another PR depend on this one before it lands.

Tests run with the debug build

  • test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts: 522 pass. On main: 494 pass, 28 fail.
  • test/js/node/assert/ (6 other files): all pass.
  • Vendored: test-assert.js, test-assert-class.js, test-assert-deep-with-error.js, test-assert-typedarray-deepequal.js, test-util-isDeepStrictEqual.js, test-assert-checktag.js, test-assert-if-error.js, test-assert-fail.js, test-runner-assert.js, test-assert-class-destructuring.js: all pass.
  • The new test blocks also pass on Node v26.3.0 (44 of 44). The three rows that are marked as failing for Bun pass there.
  • Node's own test-assert-partial-deep-equal.js (not in this repository): 139 of 140 pass on main and on this PR. The one failure is a File and Blob comparison.

errorSubset compared `message`, `name`, `errors` and `cause` of two
errors and then walked the own enumerable keys of the expected error. A
key that the expected error owns as an enumerable property was compared
in both steps, so nested errors cost 2^depth comparisons.

errorSubset now follows the Error arm of Node's comparisons.js. The new
helper isEnumerableOrIdentical skips a key that the expected error owns
as an enumerable property before it reads anything, so only the walk
over the enumerable keys compares that key. The keys are handled in
Node's order (message, name, cause, errors). `cause` follows the rule of
the other keys: an undefined expected value is not compared, and an
inherited `cause` is compared. The check that an own `cause` of the
expected error is an own property of the actual error runs after the
four keys.

mapSubset compared the value under a key that both Maps hold, and when
the values differed its scan over the entries compared the same value
again. The scan now skips that entry.

The strict comparator still compares an enumerable `cause` twice per
level. Three failing tests record that.

Status

How I reproduced it, on main (384a388) and on Node v26.3.0:

  • The script in the Notes of the description counts the reads of an enumerable errors getter. main prints 12, 60, 16380 and 524284 reads at depth 1, 3, 11 and 16. Node prints 4, 8, 24 and 34.
  • assert.partialDeepStrictEqual(new Error("x", { cause: 2 }), new E("x")) with class E extends Error { get cause() { return 1; } } passes on main and throws on Node.
  • Two Maps nested 20 levels under one shared object key, with a different leaf, take about 300 ms to fail on main and under 1 ms on Node.

The new tests in test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts fail on main (28 of 44) and pass with this PR. The same blocks pass on Node v26.3.0.

CI (build 136615, ad054fa)

No failure in this build is in code that this PR changes. The PR is ready for review.

  • test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts ran on the debian 13 x64-asan lane and passed: 522 pass, 0 fail.
  • The build reports 28 failed test files. 27 are in test/aot/ and one is test/bundler/compile-aot-size.test.ts. The same 28 files fail in the final builds of ci: canary release uses a GitHub App token and does not wait for tests #47622 (136399), ci: look up Linux images with an AWS role #47625 (136407) and ci: publish to npm with trusted publishing #47615 (136388), which change CI files only.
  • This PR changes src/jsc/modules/NodeUtilTypesModule.cpp and one test file. No file in test/aot/ calls assert.partialDeepStrictEqual.
  • compile-aot-size.test.ts has a limit of 25,880,000 mapped bytes for a trimmed hello world. The three builds above map 25,961,444 bytes. This build maps 25,957,348 bytes.
  • Two more AOT tests failed on lanes that post no annotation: test/aot/engine/native-5.test.ts on darwin aarch64 (the same native assertion as native-6.test.ts) and test/aot/three-layers-agree.test.ts on the asan lane.

I did not run CI again, because these tests fail the same way on each recent build.

Walkthrough

Partial deep equality now checks Error properties through a shared comparison helper. Map matching skips an identity-matched entry when its value fails partial comparison. Tests cover Error property access and Map matching behavior.

Changes

Error property comparison

Layer / File(s) Summary
Error property comparison and tests
src/jsc/modules/NodeUtilTypesModule.cpp, test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts
errorSubset checks message, name, cause, and errors through isEnumerableOrIdentical. Tests cover enumerability, getters, nested values, exceptions, and mutations during comparison. Some tests document repeated cause getter reads with test.failing.

Map entry matching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Map entry matching and tests
src/jsc/modules/NodeUtilTypesModule.cpp, test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts
mapSubset skips an identity-matched entry when its value fails partial comparison, so deep-key matching does not reuse that entry. Tests check nested getter read counts and matching another deep-equal key.

Nitpick Assert expected-side reads for hidden getters.

1457-1464: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Assert expected-side reads for hidden getters.

The hidden-getter test at test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts:1457-1464 counts reads only on the actual error. The expected error is built with getterChain(key, false, depth).error, and its read counter is never checked. An extra read of a hidden field on the expected error would leave [2, 4, 9] unchanged, so the test would still pass. The test title also says "compares a hidden %s once at each level", which only holds for the actual side as written. Capture the expected chain's counter and assert it alongside the actual counter, as the enumerable-key tests at lines 1417-1429 already do.

Update the hidden-getter test using getterChain to retain the expected chain and

expected-side reads fail the test; adjust the test title to accurately describe

I reviewed this PR and found no bugs, but a human look is still worthwhile: it deliberately changes what assert.partialDeepStrictEqual accepts for Errors (an inherited cause on the expected side is now compared; an own cause: undefined no longer rejects an actual error with a cause), and the Node v26.3.0 reference it ports is not available in this checkout to diff against.

What was reviewed:

  • isEnumerableOrIdentical / errorSubset: every JS-entering call (getNonIndexPropertySlot, getValue, get, compareBranch) is followed by RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION; the dropped explicit cause value comparison is covered by the new loop, and the own-cause presence check is preserved.
  • mapSubset: the candidateKey == expectedKey skip is only reached for object keys after the identity lookup already compared that entry, and used-index bookkeeping is unchanged; a Map mutated by a value getter mid-compare could skip a rewritten entry, but that is contrived and Node makes no stronger promise there.
  • Tests: the 37x37 placement matrix per key runs several thousand partialDeepStrictEqual calls per test.each row with no isDebug/isASAN scaling, so watch the debug and ASAN lane times for this file.
Extended reasoning...

The change touches the C++ partial-deep-equality implementation in src/jsc/modules/NodeUtilTypesModule.cpp (Error arm rewritten around a new isEnumerableOrIdentical helper; Map arm skips re-comparing the identity-looked-up entry) and adds ~360 lines of tests to test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts. It touches no security-sensitive surface (no auth, crypto, or data exposure). Exception handling and GC rooting in the new code follow REVIEW.md rules, and no CODEOWNERS entry covers these paths. Deferred rather than approved because it is a user-visible semantic change to a Node-compat assertion API whose reference implementation could not be verified offline, and because the new brute-force test matrix has no debug/ASAN budget guard.

… after what it counts

The placement test built four errors for each of its 1,369 pairs. It
now builds each state once per side. The test of hidden getters counts
the reads of the actual error only, and its name says so.
Comment thread src/jsc/modules/NodeUtilTypesModule.cpp Resolved

The block asserts only results that Node v26.3.0 also gives, and this is the one place where the two differ: for a hidden getter chain at depth 1, 3 and 8, Node reads the expected side 4, 8 and 18 times (6, 12 and 27 for message), Bun reads it 2, 4 and 9 times, on main and on this PR. An exact count there would be a Bun-only number. The title point is correct, so d825295 renames the test to "reads a hidden %s of the actual error once at each level".

Time of the placement test (claude). d825295 builds the 37 states once per side. Before, it built four errors for each of the 1,369 pairs. On the debug and ASAN build the four tests now take 160 ms to 337 ms each (before: 467 ms to 568 ms). The coverage is the same: the 12 one-clause variants that passed before this test existed still fail it.

The note about a Map that a value getter rewrites during the comparison is right. Node compares that entry once as well, so I left it.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Re-read the expected message getter for the empty-message check, as Node does.

569-572: Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Re-read the expected message getter for the empty-message check, as Node does.

Node v26.3.0 reads val2[prop] up to three times in isEnumerableOrIdentical. This helper reads the expected accessor once. If the getter returns a nonempty message, then "", Node skips the message check. This helper compares the actual message and fails. The base errorSubset has the same single read, so this predates the PR.

Update isEnumerableOrIdentical to re-read the expected message getter for the
empty-message check, matching Node’s behavior when the getter returns different
values across reads. Keep the existing actual-message comparison and other
property-check behavior unchanged.
Nitpick Count expected-side reads in the hidden-key test.

1460-1460: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Count expected-side reads in the hidden-key test.

The hidden-key test builds the expected chain inline and discards its reads. It asserts only actual.reads(). If the expected error's hidden getters start reading more often, this test still passes. The enumerable-key tests count expected-side reads, so only hidden keys lack that check. The omission matches the comment at line 1463, which says Node and Bun read the expected side a different number of times. A Bun-specific expected-side assertion does not conflict with that difference.

Assign the expected chain to a variable, count its reads, and assert the per-depth expected counts that Bun produces in this test. Derive those counts by running the test on Bun. Do not use Node's counts.

Review comment at @test/js/node/assert/deep-equal.test.ts at line 1460:
Update the hidden-key test around getterChain to store the expected chain, then
assert its read count against the per-depth expected-side counts used for Bun.
Preserve the existing comparison and actual-side read assertion, without using
Node’s expected-side counts.

Re-read of the expected message getter. The description is correct, and I checked it: an expected error whose hidden message getter returns "x" on the first read and "" after that, against new Error("y").

Node v26.3.0 Bun v1.3.14 main this PR
passes throws throws throws

So the difference is older than this PR, and this PR does not move it. It is one of the 95 generated pairs in the description: the result differs from Node only when a getter returns another value on its next read. I kept the single read for the reason in the resolved thread on NodeUtilTypesModule.cpp. That thread also has the alternative, a re-read that runs only after a getter or a Proxy trap ran, if a maintainer wants Node's exact reads.

Expected-side count in the hidden getter test. Not added, for the reason in my earlier reply and one more: it would pin the number that the first point asks to change. With a re-read, the expected side of that test goes from 2, 4 and 9 reads to Node's 4, 8 and 18.
