Walkthrough
The release workflow grants id-token: write to both npm release jobs and configures the npm job to use the latest Node.js version. It removes npm authentication-token environment variables and .npmrc token configuration while retaining the NPM_TAG selection and publish flow.
Both release jobs receive id-token: write. The npm job uses the latest Node.js version. The workflow and package .npmrc remove npm authentication-token configuration. The npm-types job retains its NPM_TAG selection and publish flow.

Confirm trusted publishing for every release package before merging, or retain a token fallback. A missing configuration can stop publication partway and leave the root bun package unpublished.

Keep a token fallback or confirm trusted publishers for every published package.
The npm job no longer passes NPM_TOKEN, and packages/bun-release/.npmrc no longer has its _authToken line. If npm has no matching trusted publisher for a package that bun upload-npm -- "$BUN_VERSION" publish publishes, that publish fails with no fallback credential. scripts/upload-npm.ts publishes the platform packages before the root bun package and throws on any publish failure that is not an already-published error. The release can therefore stop partway, with the root package unpublished. Before merging, confirm a trusted publisher exists for every package in the publish list, or keep a token fallback.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked for leftover references to the removed npm token across .github, .buildkite, packages/bun-release, scripts and docs — none remain. I confirmed ./.github/actions/setup-bun only prepends bun/bunx to PATH, so the npm that upload-npm.ts spawns is the one from the new setup-node step, and the remaining line in packages/bun-release/.npmrc (scope registry only) is harmless under trusted publishing.
Extended reasoning...
The change swaps the npm and npm-types release jobs from a long-lived NPM_TOKEN secret to OIDC trusted publishing (id-token: write plus a setup-node step, matching the pre-existing npm-types pattern including node-version: latest) and strips the auth line from packages/bun-release/.npmrc. It touches the release credential path for the bun, @ oven/bun-* and bun-types packages, and packages/bun-types is CODEOWNER-owned. Two confirmed findings are posted inline, so this is a findings-present ruled-out note rather than an approval.

🔴 If any of the 17 packages the npm job publishes lacks an npm-side trusted publisher bound to release.yml, the release now stops with some platform packages published and no root bun package. Each npm publish spawned by upload-npm.ts does its own OIDC exchange; on failure npm falls back to no credentials and exits ENEEDAUTH, which publishModule turns into a throw at packages/bun-release/scripts/upload-npm.ts:204, ending the loop before bun (pushed last at upload-npm.ts:54). Fix: before merging, confirm every @ oven/bun-* name in packages/bun-release/src/platform.ts plus bun and bun-types exists on npm with a trusted publisher for release.yml/environment release.
Why this was flagged
A release or the daily canary run triggers the npm job at .github/workflows/release.yml:117-120, which runs bun upload-npm -- "$BUN_VERSION" publish. publish() in packages/bun-release/scripts/upload-npm.ts:50-58 iterates all 16 platform packages from platform.ts:21-131 and then bun, spawning npm publish --access public --tag ... per package at upload-npm.ts:180-193. With NPM_TOKEN removed from the step env and //registry.npmjs.org/:_authToken removed from packages/bun-release/.npmrc, the only credential is the per-package OIDC exchange npm performs for the package name in cwd. For the first package without a trusted publisher, npm logs the exchange failure, publishes without a token, and exits non-zero with ENEEDAUTH; the stderr does not contain "You cannot publish over the previously published version" so upload-npm.ts:195-204 throws, and the remaining packages, including bun itself, are never attempted. On the base branch one NPM_TOKEN secret authorised every package.
Verification:NPM_TOKEN is dropped from the Release step env (.github/workflows/release.yml:117-120 now has only GITHUB_TOKEN). On a non-zero exit, the only tolerated case is "You cannot publish over the previously published version" (upload-npm.ts:196-201); anything else hits throw new Error("npm publish failed with code " + exitCode) at line 204, which propagates out of the loop.

🟡 (optional) Anyone running npm audit signatures or reading the provenance of a tagged bun release will see a signed attestation naming the release-tag commit, while install.js was actually built from whatever main is at run time. Trusted publishing (enabled by release.yml:96) auto-generates provenance from the OIDC token's sha, but the checkout at release.yml:106 pins ref: main. The base published with a token and no attestation, so no false claim existed. Fix: build the publish payload from the same commit the attestation names, i.e. drop ref: main (or publish with --provenance=false until the workaround it references is resolved). [also at: .github/workflows/release.yml:118 - Anyone verifying provenance for bun or @ oven/bun-* will get a signed attestation naming a source commit the package was not built from.]
Why this was flagged
When a release event fires for tag bun-vX and main has moved past that tag (the normal case), the npm job checks out main (release.yml:106, comment 'To workaround issue' with no issue link) and builds npm/bun/install.js from packages/bun-release/scripts/npm-postinstall.ts at main (packages/bun-release/scripts/upload-npm.ts:68). The OIDC token minted under id-token: write (release.yml:96) carries the run's sha = the tag commit, and npm's trusted-publishing path for a public repo attaches a provenance statement for that commit. On the base there was no attestation at all: NPM_TOKEN publishes carry no provenance, so a wrong source commit is new with this diff. Consumers verifying provenance (npm audit signatures, Sigstore/Rekor lookups) get a cryptographically valid statement that the package came from a commit it was not built from. Remedy: check out the triggering ref for the npm job, or disable provenance until the ref: main workaround is removed.
Verification: nit — triggered on every release: published run once main has any commit past the tagged commit. The npm job's checkout keeps ref: main (release.yml:105-106), so the job builds from main's tree. The diff adds id-token: write (release.yml:96), so npm publish auto-generates a SLSA provenance attestation whose source digest is GITHUB_SHA. The base never passed --provenance, so no attestation existed before.

Beyond the inline finding, I also swept .github/, packages/bun-release/, and scripts/ for leftover NPM_TOKEN, NODE_AUTH_TOKEN, or _authToken references after this change — none remain, so no mirror job or script still assumes token auth. I also checked that NPM_CONFIG_PROVENANCE is honored: npm's config loader matches env keys on a case-insensitive npm_config_ prefix, so the uppercase spelling takes effect in both jobs.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches only .github/workflows/release.yml and packages/bun-release/.npmrc, switching the npm and npm-types publish jobs from a static NPM_TOKEN secret to OIDC trusted publishing with id-token: write, and the follow-up commit disables provenance in both jobs. This is release-credential and supply-chain surface, and a verified finding about the tag-vs-main transition window is posted inline, so a human should weigh the rollout ordering; this note only records what else was checked and ruled out.

🟡 (optional) Transition hazard: a release published from a tag cut before this merges ships no bun npm packages, where today it publishes them. That tag's old workflow still passes NPM_TOKEN and lacks id-token: write, but its npm job checks out main (release.yml:106) and copies main's packages/bun-release/.npmrc, which no longer has the _authToken line, so npm publish runs with no credential and fails on the first package. Fix: cut the next release tag from a commit that includes this change, or re-run via workflow_dispatch from main with use-npm; worth stating in the PR. bun-types from that old tag still publishes, leaving the version half-released.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: a release: published event for a tag whose commit predates this merge, published after main has it. GitHub runs the workflow file from the tag, so the npm job is the base version: env NPM_TOKEN at the old release.yml:116 and no id-token permission. That job still checks out ref: main (release.yml:105-106) and builds in packages/bun-release from main, where upload-npm.ts:138-140 and :172-174 copy packages/bun-release/.npmrc into every package dir. On main that file is now only @ oven:registry=https://registry.npmjs.org/; the deleted line //registry.npmjs.org/:_authToken=${NPM_TOKEN} was the only thing turning the NPM_TOKEN env into npm auth. npm publish at upload-npm.ts:180-193 therefore has no token and no OIDC, exits with ENEEDAUTH on @ oven/bun-darwin-aarch64, and upload-npm.ts:204 throws before any other package. On the base branch the same tag publishes all 17 packages. The npm-types job in the old workflow writes its own .npmrc from NODE_AUTH_TOKEN, so bun-types for that version does publish.
Verification: For release events GitHub reads the workflow file from the tag's commit, so a pre-merge tag runs the base npm job, which checks out ref: main (base lines ~105-106) with no id-token: write. This PR deletes the _authToken line from packages/bun-release/.npmrc, which upload-npm.ts:138-140 copies into each package dir, so npm publish exits with ENEEDAUTH and upload-npm.ts:195-204 throws on the first package; the base branch publishes them fine.
