Problem

  • On a node:zlib stream, flush("2", cb) and flush(2n, cb) flush. Node.js v26.12.1, which main reports, throws TypeError [ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE]: The "kind" argument must be of type number.
  • ZlibBase.prototype.flush (src/js/node/zlib.ts:375) used the kind as a table key first, and validated only on an open stream.
  • Hardening follow-up: fix regressions from #46021 and more crashes #46270 chose this against Node.js v26.3.0, which Bun 1.4.4 reports. The next release is the first that reports v26.12.1.

Fix

  • flush() validates the caller's kind before it reads the stream state, as Node.js v26.5.0 and later do (zlib: validate flush kind for brotli streams nodejs/node#63746).
  • This reverses Hardening follow-up: fix regressions from #46021 and more crashes #46270, so three answers are needed. Commit 1: a non-number kind throws on an open stream. Commit 2: it throws in every stream state (droppable alone). No _flushBoundIdx key on a stream, though Node.js has one.
  • Verified: test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js runs one fixture under Bun and Node.js v26.5.0 or later, and fails on main. Node's 62 test-zlib-*.js files pass.
  • Self-reviewed: 10 concerns raised, 8 addressed, 2 out of scope (a Node.js upgrade-guide step).

Background

  • kind is a flush constant: 0 to 5 for zlib, 3 for Brotli, 2 for Zstd.
  • Considered commit 1 alone: ended, finished and destroyed streams stay different from Node.js.

Downsides

  • "2", 2n, [2] and new Number(2) flushed in every Bun release and now throw.
  • After end() or 'finish', a bad kind throws where the callback ran. After destroy(), it throws about "kind", where it threw about "chunk" or gave the callback ERR_STREAM_DESTROYED.
  • A valid flush() on such a stream runs the validator: +109 to +122 instructions.
Notes

The three answers, in full

No maintainer has ruled on flush() since #46533 moved the reported Node.js version. #46270 says "zlib stream.flush() threw for arguments it used to accept, and streams had a new enumerable property". #46522 and #46528 say "For node:* behavior the same script ran on Node 26.12.1 first, and Node's answer decided".

  1. Open stream (commit 1, 660 of the grid calls below): flush("2") and flush(2n) throw as in Node.js v26.5.0 and later. In Bun 1.4.4 they flush.
  2. Ended, finished or destroyed stream (commit 2, 1972 grid calls): a bad kind throws there too. The test of Hardening follow-up: fix regressions from #46021 and more crashes #46270 pinned "any kind after end()". If the answer is no, drop commit 2: commit 1 keeps that test.
  3. _flushBoundIdx: Node.js v26.12.1 has it as an own enumerable key of every zlib stream. This PR keeps it off, as Hardening follow-up: fix regressions from #46021 and more crashes #46270 chose, and keeps the test that pins that. GitHub code search finds the name only in copies of Node's lib/zlib.js, in other runtimes and in Bun's test.

Node.js source: lib/zlib.js at v26.12.1, lines 377 to 397.

Behaviour change, measured

A grid of 4554 calls: 11 stream classes, 69 kinds, 6 call shapes. Each call ran in its own process under Node.js v26.12.1, under a debug build of main and under a debug build of this PR.

  • Calls equal to Node.js v26.12.1: 4553 of 4554 (main: 1921).
  • Calls changed against main: 2632. No call that equals Node.js on main differs now.
  • Open stream, 660 calls: 583 flushed and now throw TypeError. 60 threw RangeError and now throw TypeError (Brotli and Zstd with "4", "5", 5n). 17 gave an 'error' event and now throw.
  • After end() and after 'finish', 650 calls each: the callback ran, and now the call throws (550 TypeError, 100 RangeError).
  • After destroy(), 672 calls: 420 threw about "chunk" and now throw about "kind". 230 called back with ERR_STREAM_DESTROYED and now throw. 22 threw about "chunk" and now call back with ERR_STREAM_DESTROYED (undefined and NaN, as in Node.js).
  • The kind is checked before the callback. After end(), flush("2") with no callback did nothing, and flush("2", {}) threw about "listener". After 'finish' it threw about "callback". Each now throws about "kind", as in Node.js.
  • Calls that run a toString or Symbol.toPrimitive of the caller's kind object: 0 of 198 (main: 110).
  • A refused kind leaves nothing behind in each state (open, corked, ended, finished, destroyed): pendingcb +0, 'end' listeners +0, 0 write() calls, 0 callback calls. On main, flush("2", cb) queued a write (open, corked), added an 'end' listener (ended), scheduled the callback (finished) or called back with ERR_STREAM_DESTROYED (destroyed).

Cost, measured

  • Validator calls per valid flush(2, cb), open/ended/finished/destroyed: main 1/0/0/0, this PR 1/1/1/1 (gdb breakpoint count on jsCheckRangesOrGetDefault, for Gzip, Brotli and Zstd). Node.js v26.12.1 calls it in each state by its source.
  • flush() bytecodes per valid flush(2, cb), same order: main 41/17/15/20, this PR 31/30/28/31 (Baseline JIT trace).
  • Instructions per flush(2) in a hot loop, release builds of main and of this PR: finished 6.1 to 115.7, ended 6.0 to 114.9, destroyed 5.9 to 127.9, open 143.9 to 126.9. Counted with perf_event_open (instructions:u) over runs of 5e6 and 1e7 calls. For the open and destroyed rows write() was replaced by a no-op on the instance, so the numbers cover flush() alone. perf and valgrind are not in the container.
  • Allocations per valid flush(): +0 in each state. There is no allocating opcode in flush() in the trace, and heapStats().objectCount does not grow over 1e5 calls.
  • Syscalls on the JS thread inside 1e4 calls of flush(2) on a finished stream: 4 on main, 4 with this PR, all futex. Counted with a ptrace counter between two marker calls. strace is not in the container.
  • Module text of node/zlib.js: 28,537 to 28,442 bytes. Release binary (size, text): 138,011,510 to 138,011,415 bytes. No host function added.
  • kind is declared unknown. Typecheck of src/js as in CI: 0 diagnostics. With kFlushBuffers[kind] put back: TS2538: Type 'unknown' cannot be used as an index type.

What stays different from Node.js

Tests

  • The fixture test/js/node/zlib/zlib-flush-kind-fixture.cjs uses node:assert. It checks the error class (with instanceof), name, code and message for each refused kind on a Gzip, a Brotli and a Zstd stream in four states. In each state it also calls flush("2") with no callback and with a callback that is not a function. Then it checks that a valid kind still ends as the state says.
  • zlib.test.js runs it under Bun, and under node when that is v26.5.0 or later (nodeExeAtLeast). The two runs are concurrent tests with the default timeout. The Linux CI images have v26.12.1. I ran the Node.js leg here with v26.12.1.
  • On main the fixture stops at Missing expected exception (TypeError): Gzip, after write(): flush(type string ('2')).
  • The old test flush() takes a numeric string or a BigInt, and any kind after end() asserted the Node.js v26.3.0 behaviour. Of its three assertions, two are now the opposite in the fixture, and the _flushBoundIdx one stays.
  • zlib.test.js has the same verdicts with and without --debug-aot (477 tests).
  • On a debug build, the two tests libdeflate %s doesn't write past its output buffer while another thread writes to the shared input of zlib.test.js reached the 5 s default timeout in 7 of 14 runs of the file here. They do not use flush(). The last commit gives them 30 s on a debug build, like the other slow tests of that file, so that the file passes there. Every other build keeps the default.

Self-review

  • Addressed: the body now asks for the three answers and states the release window. The Downsides separate destroy() from end(). The fixture also pins that the kind is checked before the callback. The source comment links the Node.js lines. The second Hardening follow-up: fix regressions from #46021 and more crashes #46270 item (hash.write()) and the sibling zlib pull requests are named above.
  • Out of scope: a step in the Node.js upgrade guide that lists the behaviour changes of lib/ between the old and the new version. This flush() change is one row of that list, found by hand.

flush(kind, callback) looked up a string, BigInt or object kind as a key
of the flush table before it checked the kind. So "2", 2n, [2] and
new Number(2) flushed like 2.

Node.js v26.5.0 and later give the kind to the validator as the caller
passed it, and throw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (nodejs/node#63746). flush()
now does the same on a stream that is open.

The fixture holds the assertions. It runs under Bun, and under Node.js
when that is v26.5.0 or later.
flush(kind, callback) checked the kind only on a stream that was not
ended, not finished and not destroyed. After end() or 'finish' it took
any kind and called back. After destroy() it used the kind as a key of
the flush table, so a bad kind threw about "chunk", or called back with
ERR_STREAM_DESTROYED.

Node.js v26.5.0 and later check the kind first, in every stream state
(nodejs/node#63746). flush() now has the same order. The bounds stay on
the prototype: a stream still has no own _flushBoundIdx.

The kind parameter is declared as unknown, so a use of it as a key of
the flush table does not compile.

Status

  • Reproduced on a debug build of main (11c3671) with the script in the Notes of the description. It prints flushed for "2" and for 2n. Node.js v26.12.1 prints throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE for both.
  • With this PR the script prints throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE for both. test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js fails on main and passes on this branch.
  • CI, build 135181 on commit fdf1cd1: no test of this PR failed, and 184 jobs passed. One job is red. darwin 27 aarch64 - test-bun stopped before it ran a test, with buildkite-agent artifact download timed out after 120s. A re-run of that one job is enough. Four macOS x64 test jobs still wait for an agent. The other tests in the CI comment passed on a retry, and none of them is a zlib test.
  • Before a merge, this PR needs a maintainer's answer to the three points in the description.
  • Pull request: node:zlib: validate the flush kind before the stream state, as Node.js 26.5+ does #47339

Walkthrough

ZlibBase.flush validates flush kinds against stream bounds. Tests cover valid and invalid kinds across Gzip, Brotli, and Zstd streams in multiple lifecycle states.

Changes

Zlib flush kind validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Flush kind contract and validation
src/js/node/zlib.ts
The flush declaration changes the kind parameter to unknown. The implementation validates the supplied or default kind before handling stream state and removes numeric-string and bigint conversions.
Cross-codec flush validation tests
test/js/node/zlib/zlib-flush-kind-fixture.cjs, test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js
The fixture checks type and range errors, callback results, and unchanged stream counters across codecs and states. The harness runs the fixture under Bun and, when available, Node.js 26.5.0 or later. A separate assertion checks that _flushBoundIdx is not an own property.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline nits, I also checked that src/js/ahead-of-time/ has no second copy of zlib.ts needing the same edit, that the native checkRangesOrGetDefault returns the default for undefined/NaN and throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE ("a finite number") for Infinity as the fixture expects, and that the fixture's "after end()" expectation of [] holds whether 'finish' has already fired (nextTick path) or not (once('end') path), so the state ordering cannot make it flaky.

Extended reasoning...

The change moves kind validation in ZlibBase.prototype.flush ahead of the stream-state checks and drops the lenient flush-table lookup, deliberately reversing #46270 to match Node v26.5.0+; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The PR itself asks maintainers to rule on whether the broader behavior change (commit 2) and the absent _flushBoundIdx property are wanted, which is a product decision a human should make.

The two runs are independent processes, so they are concurrent tests now,
like the other tests of zlib.test.js that spawn a process.

The test has the default timeout again. The fixture does less work: it
makes the calls with no callback and with a callback that is not a
function for one kind in each stream state, not for each kind.

Both points from my earlier pass (serial registration, the debug-only timeout) are addressed in the latest commit, and I found no bugs in this version. A human look is still worthwhile because the change deliberately reverses #46270: numeric strings and BigInts that every Bun release accepted now throw, and calls after end()/'finish'/destroy() now throw instead of calling back — that is a compat-policy call for a maintainer, not a correctness one.

What was reviewed:

  • flush() in src/js/node/zlib.ts against Node v26.12.1 lib/zlib.js: the function-swap, checkRangesOrGetDefault placement, and the three state branches now match line for line; undefined/NaN still fall through to the default via the native validator (NodeValidatorBodies.h), so the only removed inputs are the ones Node also refuses.
  • Non-integer in-range kinds (e.g. 2.5) index kFlushBuffers to undefined and reach write() — same as on main and as in Node, so not a regression.
  • The deleted test is replaced by the spawned fixture, which pins exact error class/code/message, pendingcb and 'end'-listener counts per state, and runs under real Node when >= 26.5.0 is available; the _flushBoundIdx assertion from the old test is kept separately. The existing test-zlib-brotli-flush-invalid-kind.js port stays consistent with the new validation.
Extended reasoning...

The diff touches one method in the built-in node:zlib module (src/js/node/zlib.ts), adds a node:assert fixture (test/js/node/zlib/zlib-flush-kind-fixture.cjs), and rewires test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js to spawn it under bun and node. It touches no security-sensitive surface; the validator is a native bindgen helper already used for the constructor options. The code is small and verifiably equivalent to Node's current implementation, and the two nits from my prior review were addressed in commit fe39688. Defer rather than approve because the PR knowingly reverses a prior maintainer-merged compat choice (#46270) and widens the set of inputs that throw for existing users, which the author's own description flags as needing a maintainer ruling. No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files and no CHANGES_REQUESTED review is outstanding.

Strengthen the error-class assertions.

The current validation constructs the expected error classes, so this is additional regression coverage rather than a current failure. Add prototype checks to ensure future changes cannot replace TypeError or RangeError with a plain Error that has matching fields.

Applied the fixture suggestion in 65f5c0b. The fixture now also checks each refused call with instanceof TypeError or instanceof RangeError. Before, a plain Error with the same name, code and message passed the object form of assert.throws. The fixture still passes under Node.js v26.12.1 and on this branch, and fails on main.

I reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; the two nits from my earlier review (per-test timeout, serial registration) are both addressed in this version. Because this reverses the flush() behavior that #46270 chose (numeric strings/BigInts and bad kinds after end()), a maintainer still needs to rule on that direction, so a human look is worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • ZlibBase.prototype.flush in src/js/node/zlib.ts: the eager checkRangesOrGetDefault call matches Node v26.12.1 lib/zlib.js control flow (validate, then branch on writableFinished/writableEnded); undefined/NaN still fall through to _defaultFullFlushFlag, and the resulting index into kFlushBuffers is always in-range.
  • Checked that nothing else in the test suite or src/js relies on the removed "2"/2n coercion, and that there is no src/js/ahead-of-time zlib copy to keep in sync.
  • The fixture spawn in zlib.test.js drains stdout/stderr concurrently, uses nodeExeAtLeast("26.5.0") from harness with skipIf when Node is absent, and asserts a single {stdout, stderr, exitCode} object.
Extended reasoning...

The change touches one function in the built-in node:zlib module (src/js/node/zlib.ts), replaces one in-process test with a spawned node:assert fixture that runs under both Bun and Node >= 26.5.0, and keeps a test pinning the absence of _flushBoundIdx; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The code is small and matches the cited Node source, and the validator is the shared native one already used for options.flush. What keeps this from an approve is that it deliberately reverses a behavior choice made in #46270 (a user-visible break for callers passing "2", 2n or any kind after end()), and the author explicitly asks for a maintainer ruling on three compat answers; that is a policy decision, not a correctness question an automated review can settle.

On a debug build each of the two tests needs about 2 s to start a process
and its Worker, then runs 500 rounds, and the two run at the same time.
They reached the 5 s default timeout in 7 of 14 runs of zlib.test.js
here. They now have 30 s on a debug build, like the other slow tests of
this file. Every other build keeps the default.
