node:zlib: zstd pledgedSrcSize and dictionary follow Node v26.12.1 - #47027
zlib.zstdCompress("é", { defaultEncoding: "latin1" }, cb) fails with ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong since Bun 1.3.0: the wrapper pledges the UTF-8 length (src/js/node/zlib.ts:837).
zlib.zstdCompressSync(Buffer.alloc(64), { pledgedSrcSize: 10 }) returns a frame. Node.js v26.12.1 throws ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong. Context::do_work (src/runtime/node/zlib/NativeZstd.rs:482) keeps no count.
Fix
do_work counts the input of the first frame and reports ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong on a mismatch.
pledgedSrcSize declares a frame's input size, which zstd writes to the header. zstd skips the comparison if a frame's first call is ZSTD_e_end, or with several worker jobs.
A string with another defaultEncoding than "utf8" or "utf-8" gets no content size. At level 22 it costs 62 ms and 780 MiB, not 0.4 ms and 41 MiB.
Per native write: +2 instructions (compress), +1 (decompress). Per zstdCompress() call: +1 JS call, +1 host call. Binary: +1,047 bytes.
Notes
What each runtime does
const input = Buffer.alloc(64, 0x61). "frame" means a valid frame whose header holds the real size. rejected is a dictionary that zstd does not accept: the magic number 0xEC30A437 and then 60 bytes of 0x41. The first column is the same on Bun 1.4.4, on Bun 1.4.3 and on a release build of main.
Probes of this PR against Node.js v26.12.1. 0 rows differ in each. In the first four counts, "Bun 1.4.3" is the build 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9.
35 call shapes. Bun 1.4.3 differs on 15.
15 rows of one stream shape: createZstdCompress, default flush, ZSTD_c_jobSize 512 KiB, 64 KiB writes, with 0, 1 and 2 workers and 5 pledges. Bun 1.4.3 differs on 8, all with workers.
22 validation rows and 16 node:zlib/iter validation rows. Bun 1.4.3 differs on 18 and 15.
32 rows for the check order of params, dictionary and pledgedSrcSize.
19 rows with rejected as a Buffer and as an ArrayBuffer: the sync, callback, stream and class entry points and the four node:zlib/iter transforms. Bun 1.4.4 differs on 13.
Why zstd does not report it
ZSTD_CCtx_init_compressStream2 has if (endOp == ZSTD_e_end) cctx->pledgedSrcSizePlusOne = inSize + 1; (vendor/zstd/lib/compress/zstd_compress.c). So the first call of a frame replaces the pledge when it also ends the frame. That is the case for zstdCompressSync, for a stream with flush: ZSTD_e_end, for end() with no data and for an iter transform with no chunks.
With workers, zstd gives the pledge to its first job. It rejects a first job that is longer than the pledge, and it compares when the frame is one job. It does not compare at the end of a frame of two or more jobs.
Node.js counts in ZstdCompressContext::DoThreadPoolWork (v26.12.1). It compares one time, when the first frame ends. Later frames of the same handle are not compared. reset() starts the count again.
A pledge that differs from the input now fails in the cases of the table. It already failed when a stream wrote with ZSTD_e_continue and ended later.
zlib.zstdCompress() honors a pledge of 0. Before, it replaced 0 with the input size.
null, false, "", "64", 0n and each other value that is not a number throw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. The decompress classes validate the option too, as in Node.js.
Sizes from 2^32 to 2^53 - 1 are accepted. NaN, infinities and fractions throw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE with "pledgedSrcSize must be a safe integer".
zlib.zstdCompress() of an empty input writes content size 0.
node:zlib/iter validates in the native init(). A NaN pledge is ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE, not ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. Node.js removed the same pre-check in v26.7.0.
A decompressor with a dictionary that zstd rejects throws ERR_ZLIB_INITIALIZATION_FAILED: Failed to load zstd dictionary when it is constructed, as in Node.js. Before, zstdDecompressSync and zstdDecompress returned an empty buffer, the async transform of node:zlib/iter gave 0 bytes, and the sync transform threw ERR_ZLIB_DICTIONARY_LOAD_FAILED. A compressor reads the dictionary at its first write and fails there with ZSTD_error_memory_allocation, on Bun and on Node.js.
zlib.zstdCompress() reads no option from Object.prototype, as in Node.js: its copy of the options has a null prototype. On main, a polluted Object.prototype.info changes the result, also for options with a null prototype. The other async node:zlib functions use the object of the caller, or a plain {} if there is none, on Bun and on Node.js.
With workers, ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong can also mean that the driver dropped input (see Limits).

On main 1,413 of them fail. Against main, 461 frames lose the content size and 8 empty inputs gain content size 0. Of the 461, 351 have defaultEncoding "UTF8", "UTF-8" or "Utf8", 65 have latin1, binary or ascii, and 45 have utf16le or ucs2.
zlib.zstdCompress("a".repeat(64), { defaultEncoding: "latin1", params: { [ZSTD_c_compressionLevel]: 22 } }, cb): 0.43 ms CPU and 41 MiB peak RSS on main, 62 ms and 778 MiB with this PR. Node.js v26.12.1: 231 ms and 750 MiB. At level 3: 0.4 to 0.6 ms and 41 to 44 MiB on both.
Tests
test/js/node/zlib/zstd-pledged-src-size.test.ts uses node:test and node:assert. Its last test runs the same file under Node.js, from v26.11.0 on. Debug build and release build of this PR: 63 pass. Node.js v26.12.1: 62 pass. Bun 1.4.4, Bun 1.4.3 and a release build of main: 51 fail, 12 pass.
test-zlib-zstd-pledged-src-size.js and test-zlib-zstd-dictionary.js in test/js/node/test/parallel/ are the v26.12.1 files, byte for byte. Both exit 0 on this PR and 1 on Bun 1.4.4 and on main.
Also run on the debug build of the last rebase (on 11c3671): the other files of test/js/node/zlib/ without leak.test.ts (69 pass), test/regression/issue/23314/ (7 pass), test/js/bun/util/zstd.test.ts (99 pass), the 103 vendored test-zlib-*.js and test-stream-iter-*.js files. The new file also passes with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. The child processes of zlib-handle-bounds-check.test.ts reached the 5 s timeout in a first run and passed in a second.
zlib.test.js on that build: 471 pass, 2 skip, 2 fail in 3 of 3 runs. The 2 failures are its libdeflate tests (Bun.gzipSync and Bun.deflateSync in a child process with a worker). They reach their 5 s timeout in this debug build, and they do not use zstd.
bindgen: delete b.any and .variadic #46789 types this argument as b.f64.otherAsNull. Here it is b.f64.optional with expected: { pledgedSrcSize: "pledgedSrcSize must be a number" }, and it must stay so (with .deferred to keep the check after writeState). With otherAsNull, null and "1" mean no pledge again, and the tests of this PR fail.
An input that zstd splits into two or more worker jobs can be dropped in part by the JS drivers, on Bun and on Node.js (createZstdCompress throw error if set constants.ZSTD_c_nbWorkers nodejs/node#59899, node:zlib: call ZSTD_compressStream2 until a write's input is taken #46891). A node:zlib stream that writes with ZSTD_e_continue then usually ends early and reports nothing. node:zlib/iter ends the frame, so an exact pledge now fails with ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong when a chunk is longer than one job (3 of 3 runs for 768 KiB and a 512 KiB job). Bun 1.4.4 returns a frame that holds 524,288 of the 786,432 bytes there. Node.js v26.12.1 throws as this PR does. The tests use flush: ZSTD_e_flush for workers.
reset() in a frame that has already given output: Node.js v26.11.0 and later fail the stream with ERR_ZLIB_INCOMPLETE_FRAME (zlib: reject reset while a zstd frame is incomplete nodejs/node#66088). Bun accepts the reset, on main and with this PR. With a pledge, the frame after such a reset is now compared, so a mismatch gives ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong where main gave output that does not decompress.
An ArrayBuffer of another realm (vm.runInNewContext("new ArrayBuffer(64)")) as a zstd dictionary throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. It does the same for deflate and brotli on main, because zlib.ts tests with instanceof. Main ignores it for zstd, and Node.js loads it.
15 concerns raised, 13 addressed: the dictionary check, the type check in the schema, the tests that pinned the empty frame that end() adds (nodejs/node#66161 removes it), a test for defaultEncoding: null, a wrong comment about workers, and the text of this description. Not done:
The options copy of zlib.zstdCompress() keeps the null prototype of Node's code. One revision used a plain copy, as main does, to save the host call. A review comment showed that the options of the caller then lose a null prototype. A test covers it now.
Status: the fix is in this pull request (#47027). The branch is rebased on main (11c3671) and has no conflict. It is ready for a maintainer review.
How I reproduced it, on Bun 1.4.4 and on main:
constzlib=require("node:zlib");// Returns a frame. Node.js v26.12.1 throws ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong.zlib.zstdCompressSync(Buffer.alloc(64,0x61),{pledgedSrcSize: 10});// Fails with ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong. Node.js v26.12.1 and Bun 1.2.23 return a frame.zlib.zstdCompress("é",{defaultEncoding: "latin1"},(error,frame)=>console.log(error?.code,frame));
CI on 55e1d33 (build 134324) is red for a reason that this diff does not cause:
The test-aot jobs fail, in test/aot/perf/generated-code-of-idioms-*.test.ts, test/aot/programs-that-ask-the-shell-*.test.ts and test/aot/servers/hono.test.ts. The diff does not touch them.
Since 03:00 UTC on 28 October, a test-aot job fails in each of the 28 builds in which these jobs ran to an end, on other branches too.

Summary
Option preparation and dictionary handling src/js/node/zlib.ts, test/js/node/test/parallel/test-zlib-zstd-dictionary.js, test/js/node/test/parallel/test-zlib-zstd-pledged-src-size.js, test/js/node/zlib/zstd-pledged-src-size.test.ts
Convenience methods prepare pledge options after callback normalization. zstdCompress() infers sizes for supported strings and byte inputs when no pledge is supplied. Dictionary validation accepts views and ArrayBuffers, and rejects other defined values. Tests cover dictionary handling and pledge inference.
Compression tracks input bytes consumed for a pledged frame. When an end flush completes the frame, it reports a source-size error if the total differs from the pledge. Tests cover streams, frame headers, flushes, resets, worker configurations, and iterator transforms.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked that the new consumed_src_size count is reset on every lifecycle path: reset() routes through init() -> apply_pledge(), and the decompress arm never touches it, so a stale count cannot leak into a later frame. The remaining == 0 && ZSTD_e_end trigger relies on zstd's contract that a zero return means the frame is fully flushed, so an exact-fit output buffer does not produce a spurious or missed mismatch.
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks zstd pledgedSrcSize and dictionary validation in src/js/node/zlib.ts, the bindgen signature in src/runtime/node/node_zlib_binding.bind.ts, and the native Context in src/runtime/node/zlib/NativeZstd.rs, with a new consumed-bytes count that synthesizes ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong at the end of the first frame. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the only trust boundary is JS-supplied numbers, now validated in Rust before the u64 cast. A confirmed inline finding on the init-before-super error path already signals that a human should look, so this note only records what else was examined.

Check the Zstd init result before the stream is used.
A failed dictionary load makes NativeZstd.init report an error and return false. The constructor ignores that result. The stream then has no compression context, and a later zstdCompressSync() call can return an empty buffer without an error. The ArrayBuffer dictionary path added in this PR reaches this unchecked call. The ArrayBufferView dictionary path already reached it before this change.
Brotli checks the same return value and throws $ERR_ZLIB_INITIALIZATION_FAILED(). The Zstd constructor can follow that pattern:

Beyond the inline nit, I also checked the new native count in Context::do_work: set_buffers resets input.pos before each native call, so the per-call delta is right across the chunkSize: 64 retry loop; reset() goes through init() -> apply_pledge(), so the count restarts with the pledge; the synthesized ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong is the negated code that get_error_info already maps. On the binding side, b.f64.optional treats only undefined as absent and is a strict double, so null/"1" reach the ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE path and NaN/Infinity fall into the trunc/MAX_SAFE_INTEGER range check. The pledgedSrcSize local left in transform.ts is still passed to handle.init, and the isArrayBufferView/isAnyArrayBuffer imports in zlib.ts remain live. A human look is still worthwhile: this changes user-visible zstd behavior (wrong pledges and non-view dictionaries now throw) and I could not verify the two Node parallel tests against upstream v26.12.1 from here.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the node:zlib zstd compat layer in JS (src/js/node/zlib.ts, src/js/internal/streams/iter/transform.ts), the bindgen signature for NativeZstd.init, and the Rust native context (src/runtime/node/zlib/NativeZstd.rs), adding per-frame input counting and a synthesized zstd error; no auth, crypto, or injection surface is involved. The ruled-out items above come from reading the diff and the surrounding Rust and bindgen code; the two Node parallel test files are claimed to be verbatim upstream v26.12.1 but could not be checked without network access.
This PR also has the change that was prepared separately for the first gap of #44278 (a pledgedSrcSize that is not a number). No second PR follows for that gap.
The separate change had the same hunks in src/js/node/zlib.ts and src/js/internal/streams/iter/transform.ts, and the type check in NativeZstd::init. It was not pushed, so there is no branch to link.
A probe of 6 entry points and 13 values gives the output of Node.js v26.12.1 on each of its 78 lines. Bun 1.4.3 differs on 72 lines.
The test file of the separate change passes without edits (15 pass). It has three cases that the test file here does not have: new zlib.ZstdCompress() and new zlib.ZstdDecompress(), a symbol value, and _handle.init() with a value that is not a number together with a dictionary that is not a view. The pledgedSrcSize error comes first there, as in Node.js.
zlib.zstdCompress("abc", { pledgedSrcSize }) with null, "", false and 0n throws as in Node.js. On main the wrapper replaces these values.
For the rebase on #46789: b.f64.optional.deferred with the same expected entry keeps the check after the writeState install. That form was built on bdd7035 (an earlier head of #46789), and the same test file passes there.
Reply to the CodeRabbit finding "Check the Zstd init result before the stream is used" (src/js/node/zlib.ts:878, outside the diff).
The finding is correct for one input that this pull request added. On main, Bun ignores an ArrayBuffer dictionary, so zstdDecompressSync(frame, { dictionary }) returns the data. The first commit loads the ArrayBuffer. If zstd rejected it, NativeZstd::init returned false, the constructor ignored that value, and the call returned an empty buffer.
9f7b9e3 fixes it in NativeZstd::init. A failed Context::init calls onerror and throws ERR_ZLIB_INITIALIZATION_FAILED with the message of the context, as Node.js v26.12.1 does. So the Zstd constructor and createZstdHandle need no check of the return value.
19 probe rows with a rejected dictionary (Buffer and ArrayBuffer, each zstd entry point) give the result of Node.js v26.12.1. Bun 1.4.4 differs on 13.
Three new tests in test/js/node/zlib/zstd-pledged-src-size.test.ts cover the decompress entry points and node:zlib/iter.
#38684 is the older pull request for this failure path. It also closes the handle and covers brotli. The description of this pull request says what #38684 keeps.

Beyond the inline nit, I also checked and ruled out: the b.f64.optional binding (.optional treats only undefined as absent and IDLStrictDouble is a strict isNumber() check that passes NaN through, so the null → ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE / NaN → ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE split in NativeZstd::init holds); the synthesized ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong (wrapping_neg() round-trips through ZSTD_getErrorCode in get_error_info, and reset() re-enters init → apply_pledge, so the count restarts per Node); the new early returns in init (pledge validation runs before ZSTD_createCCtx, and the dictionary/pledge failure paths free the CCtx inside Context::init); and emit_error + throw on init failure (the Zstd constructor installs onerror only in super() after init, and the iter transform's onError has no pending write to reject, so nothing is delivered twice). The earlier silent-init-failure thread is now addressed in code: init throws ERR_ZLIB_INITIALIZATION_FAILED on both the constructor and node:zlib/iter paths.
Extended reasoning...
The change moves zstd pledgedSrcSize validation from JS into the Rust binding, adds a per-frame consumed-input counter in Context::do_work that synthesizes ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong, makes init failures throw, and shares dictionary validation across Zlib/Brotli/Zstd; it touches no auth, crypto or injection surface. One nit survived verification (plain object spread in withPledgedSrcSize drops a caller's null prototype), and the rest of the Node-parity claims cannot be checked against upstream here, so a human look at the native counter semantics remains worthwhile.
The change followed Node.js v26.3.0. Bun reports v26.12.1, where the
rules are different: a pledge that is not a safe integer is refused, and
the errors have other codes. #47027 implements those rules.
Of the 629 calls this branch was compared on, the 15 with a pledge are
the only ones where the two versions of Node.js differ.
A wider probe of 74 call shapes (the sync, stream and callback forms, both zstd classes, values of a wrong type or range): 45 rows differ on main, 0 on the merged tree.
This pull request conflicts with main
#45631 added type annotations to src/js/node/zlib.ts. 4 hunks of that file conflict. The other 7 files merge cleanly.
The resolution that I used for the runs above: take the side of this pull request in each hunk, keep the ZlibFunction and ZlibClass types of main, and give types to the three functions that this pull request adds or changes.

test/js/node/zlib/zstd-pledged-src-size.test.ts: 62 pass, 1 skip. The skip is the Node.js run, because the local node is v26.3.0. The same file under Node.js v26.12.1: 62 pass.
test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js: 473 pass, 2 skip.
The 7 test-zlib-zstd*.js files of test/js/node/test/parallel/ exit 0.
The type check of the built-in modules (bun run build:types, then bun src/codegen/check-types-of-modules.ts) passes, and prettier changes nothing.
The type check fails if the lines of this pull request are taken without types:
src/js/node/zlib.ts(831,49): error TS2345: Argument of type 'ZlibOptions | ZlibCallback | undefined' is not assignable to parameter of type 'ZlibOptions | undefined'.
An untyped prepareOpts returns any, so the assignment opts = prepareOpts(buffer, opts) removes the narrowing of opts. The PrepareOptions type prevents that.
The zstd compressor counts the input of its first frame. It fails with
ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrong when that frame ends with a size that differs
from the pledge. zstd does not compare the two when the first call of a
frame also ends it, nor for a frame of several worker jobs.
NativeZstd.init() validates pledgedSrcSize as Node does: undefined or a
non-negative safe integer, with Node's three messages. The type is in
the bindgen schema. The pre-check of node:zlib/iter is removed, because
init() covers it.
zlib.zstdCompress() pledges the size of its input with Node's
withPledgedSrcSize: only when the caller gave no pledge, and for a
string only when defaultEncoding is absent, null, "utf8" or "utf-8".
The Zstd constructor validates options.dictionary before the pledge, as
the Zlib and Brotli constructors do. It accepts an ArrayBuffer.
test-zlib-zstd-pledged-src-size.js and test-zlib-zstd-dictionary.js are
the v26.12.1 files.
…nstructors
The three constructors had the same block. validateDictionary() now
holds it. A constructor calls it only when options.dictionary is set,
so a stream without a dictionary makes no more calls than before.
…ructor
`NativeZstd::init` returned false when zstd rejected the dictionary, and
the `Zstd` constructor ignored the value. The stream had no native state
then. `zstdDecompressSync` returned an empty buffer, and the async
`node:zlib/iter` transform resolved with 0 bytes.
Node.js calls `onerror` and throws `ERR_ZLIB_INITIALIZATION_FAILED` with
the message of the context ("Failed to load zstd dictionary"). `init`
does the same now. Its two failure paths share one helper.
This branch loads an ArrayBuffer dictionary, so a rejected ArrayBuffer
reached the silent path for the first time.
`withPledgedSrcSize` returns `{ __proto__: null, ...opts, pledgedSrcSize }`,
as Node.js does. With a plain copy, the options of the caller lose a
null prototype, and each `zlib.zstdCompress()` call reads options such
as `info` from `Object.prototype`. Main does that today.

Problem
zlib.zstdCompress("é", { defaultEncoding: "latin1" }, cb)fails withZSTD_error_srcSize_wrongsince Bun 1.3.0: the wrapper pledges the UTF-8 length (src/js/node/zlib.ts:837).zlib.zstdCompressSync(Buffer.alloc(64), { pledgedSrcSize: 10 })returns a frame. ZSTD_CCtx_init_compressStream2hasif (endOp == ZSTD_e_end) cctx->pledgedSrcSizePlusOne = inSize + 1;(vendor/zstd/lib/compress/zstd_compress.c). So the first call of a frame replaces the pledge when it also ends the frame. That is the case forzstdCompressSync, for a stream withflush: ZSTD_e_end, forend()with no data and for an iter transform with no chunks.ZstdCompressContext::DoThreadPoolWork(v26.12.1). It compares one time, when the first frame ends. Later frames of the same handle are not compared.reset()starts the count again. What changes for callers
zlib.zstdCompress()of a string with a non-UTF-8defaultEncodingworks again. It worked on Bun 1.2.23 and fails from Bun 1.3.0 on, because fix: zstd decompression with async-compressed data (#23314) #23317 pledges the UTF-8 length of each string.ZSTD_e_continueand ended later.zlib.zstdCompress()honors a pledge of 0. Before, it replaced 0 with the input size.null,false,"","64",0nand each other value that is not a number throwERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. The decompress classes validate the option too, as in Node.js.ERR_OUT_OF_RANGEwith "pledgedSrcSize must be a safe integer".zlib.zstdCompress()of an empty input writes content size 0.node:zlib/itervalidates in the nativeinit(). A NaN pledge isERR_OUT_OF_RANGE, notERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. Node.js removed the same pre-check in v26.7.0.dictionarycan be an ArrayBuffer (zlib: accept ArrayBuffer dictionary in Zstd nodejs/node#64599). Each other value that is not a Buffer, TypedArray or DataView throwsERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPEat the 6 zstd entry points, as in Node.js v26.10.0 and later (zlib: fix zstd reset nodejs/node#65867). Before, Bun ignored such a value. The check comes before the pledge, as in Node.js.ERR_ZLIB_INITIALIZATION_FAILED: Failed to load zstd dictionarywhen it is constructed, as in Node.js. Before, zstdDecompressSyncandzstdDecompressreturned an empty buffer, the async transform ofnode:zlib/itergave 0 bytes, and the sync transform threwERR_ZLIB_DICTIONARY_LOAD_FAILED. A compressor reads the dictionary at its first write and fails there withZSTD_error_memory_allocation, on Bun and on Node.js.zlib.zstdCompress()reads no option fromObject.prototype, as in Node.js: its copy of the options has a null prototype. On main, a pollutedObject.prototype.infochanges the result, also for options with a null prototype. The other asyncnode:zlibfunctions use the object of the caller, or a plain{}if there is none, on Bun and on Node.js.ZSTD_error_srcSize_wrongcan also mean that the driver dropped input (see Limits).Measurements

zstdCompress, closed in favour of this PR): this PR includes both changes, because Node's v26.12.1 test needs them and the count needs the second one. The count alone makeszstdCompress("616263", { defaultEncoding: "hex", flush: ZSTD_e_end }, cb)fail, because the wrapper pledges the UTF-8 length. The frame-header tests of node:zlib: accept zstd pledgedSrcSize values of 4 GiB and larger #33442 are in the new test file. Differences: the range messages are Node's text, and a string is pledged only ifdefaultEncodingis absent, null, "utf8" or "utf-8". node:zlib: zstdCompress keeps an explicit pledgedSrcSize and pledges only an exact input size #44283 compares without case and also pledges for latin1, ascii and utf16le.init()one exit: close the handle, callonerror, throw. This PR includes the zstd throw only, because it starts to load ArrayBuffer dictionaries. Without the throw, a rejected ArrayBuffer dictionary gives empty output where main returns the data. node:zlib: one failure path for zstd and brotli init(): close, call onerror, throw #38684 keeps the close of the handle, theonerrorcall for a rejected zstd parameter, the brotli half andinit()that returnsundefined. Its rebase: take its side in the two failure branches ofNativeZstd::initand deletethrow_initialization_failed.b.anyand.variadic#46789 types this argument asb.f64.otherAsNull. Here it isb.f64.optionalwithexpected: { pledgedSrcSize: "pledgedSrcSize must be a number" }, and it must stay so (with.deferredto keep the check afterwriteState). WithotherAsNull,nulland"1"mean no pledge again, and the tests of this PR fail.do_workinto a loop. The loop goes between theinput.possnapshot and the addition.reset()must callapply_pledge()in place ofZSTD_CCtx_setPledgedSrcSize. The threereset()tests fail if it does not.Contextanddo_work. Keep the compress arm of this PR. Itsassert!(size_of::<Context>() == 88)must read 104.Limits
node:zlibstream that writes withZSTD_e_continuethen usually ends early and reports nothing.node:zlib/iterends the frame, so an exact pledge now fails withZSTD_error_srcSize_wrongwhen a chunk is longer than one job (3 of 3 runs for 768 KiB and a 512 KiB job). Bun 1.4.4 returns a frame that holds 524,288 of the 786,432 bytes there. Node.js v26.12.1 throws as this PR does. The tests useflush: ZSTD_e_flushfor workers.reset()in a frame that has already given output: Node.js v26.11.0 and later fail the stream withERR_ZLIB_INCOMPLETE_FRAME(zlib: reject reset while a zstd frame is incomplete nodejs/node#66088). Bun accepts the reset, on main and with this PR. With a pledge, the frame after such a reset is now compared, so a mismatch givesZSTD_error_srcSize_wrongwhere main gave output that does not decompress.decodeStrings: falsethrowsERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPEon Bun, before and after this PR. Node.js forces the option to true since v26.11.0 (zlib: fix abort with decodeStrings: false nodejs/node#66359).vm.runInNewContext("new ArrayBuffer(64)")) as a zstddictionarythrowsERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. It does the same for deflate and brotli on main, becausezlib.tstests withinstanceof. Main ignores it for zstd, and Node.js loads it.init(), a handle that user code drives directly stays open with no context, as on main. Node.js keeps the context. node:zlib: one failure path for zstd and brotli init(): close, call onerror, throw #38684 closes the handle.rejectGarbageAfterEndis not in this PR.test-zlib-truncated.js(node:zlib: zstd decoder follows Node v26.10.0 across writes and at the end of the input #33413),test-zlib-zstd-reset.js(node:zlib: reset a zstd stream in place, keep its dictionary and parameters #44261),test-zlib-zstd-reset-incomplete-frame.jsandtest-zlib-reject-garbage-after-end.js(no pull request).Self-review
15 concerns raised, 13 addressed: the
dictionarycheck, the type check in the schema, the tests that pinned the empty frame thatend()adds (nodejs/node#66161 removes it), a test fordefaultEncoding: null, a wrong comment about workers, and the text of this description. Not done:b.anyand.variadic#46789. The type check is in the bindgen schema now and reads nob.anyvalue, so the rebase is one schema line.Changes after the review comments on this pull request:
dictionarycheck of the zlib, brotli and zstd constructors is one function.zlib.zstdCompress()keeps the null prototype of Node's code. One revision used a plain copy, as main does, to save the host call. A review comment showed that the options of the caller then lose a null prototype. A test covers it now.bun build --compile --aot#45631 added type annotations tosrc/js/node/zlib.ts.validateDictionary,withPledgedSrcSizeand theprepareOptsparameter have types now, and the type check of the built-in modules (bun src/codegen/check-types-of-modules.ts) passes.Questions for a reviewer
NativeZstd::initwrites the two range checks by hand withglobal.err(...), because.validateInteger()cannot produce Node's two messages.defaultEncodingwith "utf8" and "utf-8" exactly. So "UTF-8" gets no content size, here and in Node.js. node:zlib: zstdCompress keeps an explicit pledgedSrcSize and pledges only an exact input size #44283 compares without case. That keeps the frames of main for these calls, and Node's test still passes.
