Problem

Fix

  • A new checklist step runs the new scripts/webcore-copies.ts. It lists the merged commits that touch the upstream file of a copy.
  • The step says what to port and how to record it. This PR ports nothing.
  • Verified: test/internal/webcore-copies.test.ts. On the range of Upgrade WebKit #22499 (307 commits) it lists 4, including fbf81e4f230b.
  • Self-reviewed: 16 concerns raised, 12 addressed. Rejected: a backlog tracking issue, a recorded reviewed-through revision, the inline git log form. The notes say why.

Background

  • A copy is found by its file name plus a shared line of 40 or more characters (355 copies), or through the script's upstreamOf table (36 copies).
  • The table names upstream files of another name than the copy. An example is the structured clone code that upstream moved into JavaScriptCore (the case of upgrade-webkit: check upstream structured clone changes against Bun's copy #46773).
  • Considered a git log pathspec per file name (it misses the table's files) and a checked-in list (385 entries).

Downsides

  • Each upgrade gains a review of about 2.6% of its commits: 20, 33, 14 and 5 for the last four.
  • The 242 commits that the script lists since the last hand audit stay unreviewed.
  • When upstream moves code of a copy into a file of another name, a person must add the file to upstreamOf.

Behaviour change: none

Notes

Where the numbers come from

  • Bun at 37a5e3a. Upstream WebKit at f59345e04a8d, the upstream commit that the pinned WEBKIT_VERSION (oven-sh/WebKit@fcc1ea0973a4) was last merged with.
  • 1327 tracked files are under src/jsc/bindings. 385 are copies: 202 in webcore/, 142 in webcrypto/, 41 at the top level.
  • 355 have the name of an upstream file that they share a long line with. 16 more files have such a name and are not copies: Path.cpp, Path.h, Cookie.cpp, Cookie.h, headers.h, CachedScript.h, JSDOMBinding.h, JSDOMGlobalObject.cpp, Bindgen/IDLTypes.h, webcore/config.h, webcore/WebCoreJSClientData.h, webcore/WorkerOptions.h, v8/shim/Handle.h, libuv/uv/version.h and two README.md.
  • 41 of the 355 share no line of code of 40 or more characters with their upstream file. The license header alone marks them as copies. Examples: EventContext.cpp, ServerTiming.cpp, HTTPHeaderField.cpp, JSDOMWrapperCache.cpp, and small headers and IDL files. So one shared license line must be enough.
  • 36 copies are in upstreamOf, which names 41 upstream files. 30 of them are found through the table alone. For the other 6 the table adds files to the one of the same name. The entries are of five kinds:
    • a file that upstream renamed: the 15 webcrypto/CryptoAlgorithmAES_* files (WebKit/WebKit@ba0f647 took the underscore out of upstream's names in 2024),
    • code that upstream moved or split off (SerializedScriptValue.cpp, EventTarget.h, JSValueInWrappedObject.h),
    • an OpenSSL half that upstream keeps in its own file (CryptoAlgorithmEd25519.cpp, CryptoAlgorithmX25519.cpp, CryptoKeyOKPOpenSSL.cpp, CryptoDigest.cpp),
    • WebCore code under a Bun name (CustomEventCustom.cpp, BunClientData.*, BunGCOutputConstraint.*, BunInjectedScriptHost.*, ZigGlobalObject.*, DOMWrapperWorld-class.h),
    • the node:events files that were made from EventTarget (EventEmitter.cpp, JSEventEmitterCustom.h, IdentifierEventListenerMap.*).
  • I looked for such files by indexing every line of Source/WebCore against every file under src/jsc/bindings. Not in the table: headers that Bun modeled on an upstream header for an algorithm upstream does not have (CryptoAlgorithmChaCha20Poly1305.h, CryptoAlgorithmAeadParams.h, CryptoAlgorithmSHA3.h), JSDOMConstructorCallable.h, EventLoopTask.h (4 shared lines) and a 13-line block in sqlite/JSSQLStatement.cpp.
  • 86 upstream IDL files have a JS<Name>.cpp in Bun: 41 in webcore/, 28 in webcrypto/, 17 in webcore/streams/. The script lists a changed IDL against that binding.
  • "% same" is the part of the code lines of the upstream file that the copy also has. It is one number for each pair of an upstream file and a copy. There are 396 pairs. 340 have an upstream file of eight or more code lines and get a number. 131 are below 50%, 44 below 25% and 10 below 10%.
  • Examples: ZigGlobalObject.cpp has 22% of JSDOMGlobalObject.cpp. Worker.cpp has 12% of upstream's Worker.cpp, StructuredClone.cpp 11% and HTTPParsers.cpp 3% of theirs. SerializedScriptValue.cpp has 23% of upstream's file of that name, 54% of CloneSerializerBase.h and 49% of CloneDeserializerBase.h.

  • Since the last hand audit (webcore: sync bindings layer with upstream WebKit fixes #29316, whose newest upstream commit is b3ec744f8a4b): 242 of 13518, with bun scripts/webcore-copies.ts b3ec744f8a4b f59345e04a8d. That run takes 17 s. The run for Upgrade WebKit to 23b0720b40 #45303 takes 1.2 s.
  • No file in those 242 commits is marked "(gone)". Upstream renamed or removed no file that has a copy in that time.
  • A listed commit is not always missing in Bun. WebKit/WebKit@df27b87957a9 pads d in the JWK export of an EC key, and Bun's CryptoKeyECOpenSSL.cpp:445 already does that. So the step asks for a decision on each commit.
  • A commit that only the table lists: WebKit/WebKit@cc0ffff034c3, "[OpenSSL] AES-KW unwrapKey accepts tampered wrapped keys". It changes CryptoAlgorithmAESKWOpenSSL.cpp, and Bun's copy is CryptoAlgorithmAES_KWOpenSSL.cpp. BoringSSL returns -1 there, so Bun is not affected.

What the script refuses

  • A missing revision. Both are required, so the checklist's command stops when $OLD_BASE is not set.
  • A range with no commits, for example the two revisions swapped.
  • An upstream file that git cannot read, for example in a clone made with --filter=blob:none that cannot fetch.
  • A tracked file under src/jsc/bindings that is not in the working tree.
  • A table entry that can match nothing: a copy that is not tracked, or an upstream file that the old base does not have and no later upstream commit has. A commit of the fork does not count as later. Neither does a commit on a branch that left before the old base, such as a release branch.

Self-review

  • The first review raised 16 concerns. It asked for the table, for the refusals above, and for the checklist to keep the side task read-only and to give each applicable commit a number.
  • Not done from it: a tracking issue for the 242 commits (it needs a verdict per commit), a recorded reviewed-through upstream revision beside WEBKIT_VERSION (one more value to keep per upgrade), and the inline git log | awk form (it lists a same-name file whether or not it is a copy, and cannot read the table).
  • A second review of the reworked diff raised 20 findings. Not done from it: upstream's GCrypt and Cocoa files for Ed25519 are not in the table (only the OpenSSL ones are, as for every other algorithm), and the script does not check that a shallow clone has every commit of the range.
  • The reviews on this PR raised 8 different findings. Done from them:
    • The match by a nearly equal name and its 25% threshold are gone. The 16 copies that it found are table entries, and an entry that stops matching is an error.
    • A copy is compared with its upstream file as the old base has it, or as the first commit of the range that has it. So a rewrite inside the range does not hide its own commits, and a file that the range adds and removes again gets the same check as every other file.
    • The table check counts only upstream commits that come after the old base.
    • A tracked file that the working tree does not have is an error.
    • The checklist runs the script on vendor/WebKit, the clone of the routine, whatever BUN_WEBKIT_PATH is in the shell.
    • The test has no timeout of its own.
  • Not done from them: a merge-diff option for git log (upstream's main has no merge commit: git rev-list --merges --count prints 0 for its 28231 commits since 2025-07-01, and the merges of the fork are not in the range), and a copy test that asks for more than a shared license line (the 41 copies above would not be found).
  • A review of that rework found four more things, all done:
    • A table entry replaced the match by name. An entry that left out the file of the same name lost that file's commits with no error, and an entry for a renamed file made the next upgrade fail. An entry now adds to the match by name.
    • "% same" was the part of the copy's code that upstream has. For a copy with few functions of a large upstream file it was high, and for a copy of several upstream files it needed all of them together. It is now the part of the upstream file's code that the copy has, for each upstream file.
    • The table check counted commits of the fork. The fork's merge commits have files that upstream removed.
    • Git prints a path that is not ASCII in quotes. The script now asks for plain paths.
  • The reviews of that push raised two more findings, both done. The test spawns git with Bun.spawn (REVIEW.md: async spawns over spawnSync). The "(gone)" line of the checklist says how to find moved code when the commit that removes a file does not add the new one. The reviewer withdrew the finding about merge commits.

Test

  • The test builds small git repositories and runs the script on them. It also runs the script on this checkout, in the test process and as a command.
  • I changed each rule of the script in turn, 61 edits in all. The test failed each time.
  • Ran bun bd test test/internal/webcore-copies.test.ts, tsc on the test and the script, and prettier --check on the three files.

…WebCore files

A WebKit upgrade merges upstream into the fork. It does not change the
files under src/jsc/bindings that were copied from Source/WebCore, and
the checklist had no step that looks at what upstream changed in them.

scripts/webcore-copies.ts lists the upstream commits in a range that
touch the upstream file of a copy, or the .idl of a JS<Name>.cpp
binding. The checklist runs it and says what to do with the list.

Status

This PR changes a checklist, and adds a dev script and its test. The Bun binary does not change.

How I checked the gap:

  • At Bun 37a5e3a and upstream WebKit f59345e04a8d, 385 files under src/jsc/bindings are copies of upstream files. The upgrade checklist reviewed no commit to those upstream files.
  • Upstream WebKit/WebKit@fbf81e4f230b (2025-09-03) is in Bun's WebKit since Upgrade WebKit #22499. src/jsc/bindings/webcore/PerformanceObserver.cpp:100 still has the code that the commit replaced.
  • bun scripts/webcore-copies.ts b5ffe05c57be 20364996cad7 (the upstream range of Upgrade WebKit #22499) lists 4 of 307 commits. fbf81e4f230b is one of them.

Where it stands at aba2b0c:

  • All review threads are resolved. The two review bots report no open finding.
  • A maintainer must decide two things: whether the upgrade routine gets this review step, and whether the 36 entries of upstreamOf name the right upstream files.
  • CI: the only failed jobs are the test-aot-drawn lanes. They run a sample of test/aot, which this PR does not touch, and .buildkite/ci.ts marks them soft_fail. test/internal/webcore-copies.test.ts passed on every lane that ran.

Fail when a tracked copy is missing from the working tree.

listCopyChanges drops tracked copies that are absent from disk before it matches upstream files. A missing copy therefore never matches, and its upstream commit is omitted without an error. Missing mapped copies already fail with an error, so the same check should apply here.

isCopy accepts one shared 40-character line even when it comes solely from a standard license. Two unrelated, same-name Apple-licensed files can therefore be reported as a copy.

The command presents an unrelated upstream commit as work to review or port.

This can occur when: An unrelated Bun file and changed WebCore file have the same basename and license text but no shared implementation.

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Filename-based matching compares a surviving upstream file only at newBase. If an upstream fix replaces the last long line shared with an unported Bun copy, changedFile can reject the copy even though the old-base version identifies it.

The commit can disappear from the upgrade review list precisely when its change has not been ported.

This can occur when: A same-name, unmapped copy matches oldBase:path, but the relevant commit changes its shared lines so compareToUpstream(ours(path), newBase:path).isCopy is false.

- A copy is compared with its upstream file as the old base has it, or

- The match by a nearly equal file name is gone. The 16 copies that it
found are entries of `upstreamOf`. An entry now adds to the match by
name, so it names only the files of another name.
- The table check counts only upstream commits after the old base.
- A tracked file that is not in the working tree is an error.
- Both revisions are required. The checklist runs the script on

- The test has no timeout of its own.

Three findings of the review have no thread. Here is what I did with each.

  • A tracked copy that is missing from the working tree (scripts/webcore-copies.ts:193): done in 2ae0287. The script now fails and names the files.
  • isCopy accepts one shared license line (scripts/webcore-copies.ts:158): not changed. 41 of the 355 copies that a file name finds share no line of code of 40 or more characters with their upstream file, for example EventContext.cpp, ServerTiming.cpp and HTTPHeaderField.cpp. A stricter test does not find them. The 16 files that have the name of an upstream file and are not copies share no long line at all, so the license line does not list them.
  • The comparison used the new base only (scripts/webcore-copies.ts:261): done in 2ae0287. A copy is now compared with its upstream file as the old base has it.

The same commit changes two more things that the threads did not ask for. An upstreamOf entry now adds to the match by name, so it names only the upstream files of another name. "% same" is now the part of the upstream file's code that the copy has. The notes in the description say why.

The second commit (2ae0287) addresses the five points from my earlier inline comments: copies are compared against the old-base text, the upstreamOf check is scoped to --remotes=upstream --ancestry-path, near-name matching goes through the table instead of a loose-name heuristic, the checklist pins BUN_WEBKIT_PATH=vendor/WebKit, and the per-test timeout is gone.
Beyond the inline nit, I also checked the NUL-delimited git log parse (a commit with no matching path yields no entry; the loop bound covers the last commit), the theirs() fallback for a file the old base lacks (reads the first in-range commit that has it; a failed git show is a loud Failure), and non-ASCII paths (core.quotePath=false, exercised by the Straße.h fixture) — none turned up a bug.
Since this adds a 334-line tool and a new step to the maintainer upgrade routine, a human look at the checklist wording and the upstreamOf table is still worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...

The PR adds a new git-driven developer script (scripts/webcore-copies.ts), a 578-line test under test/internal/, and eight lines to the WebKit upgrade checklist; it touches no runtime code and no security-sensitive surface. The second push reworked the matching and comparison logic and resolved every prior inline finding; the one remaining finding is a spawnSync nit. Deferring rather than approving because the change introduces a new maintainer process step and a hand-maintained table whose design a human should weigh, and because CodeRabbit's inline comments could not be verified as addressed from metadata alone.

Document the destination search for split moves.

git show --stat of the newest commit shows the destination only when that commit also adds it. If an earlier commit adds the new file and a later commit deletes the old one, the stat lists only the deletion. The script does not list later changes to the new file unless upstreamOf names it. Tell the reviewer to search the range for the commit that adds the moved code.

… moved code

- The test's git helper uses Bun.spawn and awaits the pipes and the
exit code together. The builders of the repositories are async.
- The "(gone)" line of the checklist says when `git show --stat` shows
where the code went, and gives a `git grep` for the other case.

aba2b0c answers the two findings of the reviews of 2ae0287.

  • The "(gone)" line of the checklist (.claude/commands/upgrade-webkit.md:26): git show --stat of the commit that removes a file shows where the code went only if that commit also adds the new file. The line now says so. For the other case it gives git -C vendor/WebKit grep -l '<a function of the gone file>' -- Source, which finds the file that has the code after the merge.
  • The test spawned git with Bun.spawnSync (test/internal/webcore-copies.test.ts:23): the helper now uses Bun.spawn.

The script has no change in this commit.

I reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; everything raised in my earlier inline comments is now addressed in the code (table validation restricted to upstream-remote descendants of the old base, exact-name or table matching only, BUN_WEBKIT_PATH=vendor/WebKit in the checklist step, no per-test timeout, async git spawns). Because this adds ~900 lines of new tooling plus a new step in the upgrade routine, a human look is still worthwhile for the parts that are judgment calls rather than code: whether each of the 36 upstreamOf entries names the right upstream file, and whether the added per-upgrade review work is what maintainers want.

What was reviewed:

  • git log NUL-delimited parsing in scripts/webcore-copies.ts: the leading empty field and loop bound line up, commit bodies cannot contain NUL, and merge commits (empty path list) are dropped, which is fine for upstream's linear main.
  • Text selection for a file absent at the old base: rev-list --reverse on the range yields the commit that adds it, so the "(gone)" and transient-file cases compare against real content.
  • Non-ASCII paths go through core.quotePath=false on every git call that prints names, and the test covers it with Straße.h.
  • Test hygiene: temp dirs released via using/afterAll, pipes drained with Promise.all, bunEnv spread, and the two serial subprocess tests state their reason.
Extended reasoning...

The change adds a new developer script at /home/claude/bun/scripts/webcore-copies.ts, a new test file at /home/claude/bun/test/internal/webcore-copies.test.ts, and an eight-line step in /home/claude/bun/.claude/commands/upgrade-webkit.md; it touches no runtime code and no security-sensitive surface (it only runs read-only git commands against two local checkouts). No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed paths, the coderabbit threads were resolved by a non-author, and the latest commit addressed the remaining spawnSync nit, so no objection is outstanding. Defer rather than approve because the hand-curated upstreamOf table encodes 41 upstream-file correspondences that cannot be verified from this diff without the WebKit tree, and the new checklist step is a process decision for maintainers.
