Problem

Fix

  • Add a section "The ahead-of-time compiler": what to carry over by hand before the build, and which checks to run on the local build.
  • Add steps for the fork's Test jobs, which the release does not wait for, and for the compiler's tests in Bun's CI.
  • Replace the two stale lines. The WebKit PR lands as a merge commit.
  • Verified: the commands in the new text ran against the pinned engine (fcc1ea0973a4). Notes lists them, and the ones that only reached configure.

Background

  • bun build --compile --aot compiles a program to machine code at build time. The front end is src/aot. The engine half is in the fork.
  • The engine half keeps a table that describes every built-in, hand-kept copies of some of upstream's builtins/*.js, and tests that name built-in functions by number.
  • A lane is one tarball of a release of the fork. -aot in its name means it has the compiler.

Behaviour change: none

Notes

Where each new step comes from

Step Source
The compiler's commits between Bun's pin and the fork's main Today the fork's main (d6e9f85e67, oven-sh/WebKit#927) differs from Bun's pin (fcc1ea0973a4) in nine files under aot/ir. The schema's generator gives hash 0x38a7e821b1039468 for the pin and 0x7a251db91511d52f for main.
Conflicts compile with and without ENABLE(AOT) 158 files of JavaScriptCore outside aot/ name ENABLE(AOT), ENABLE_AOT or runsCompiledImage. In lanes.mjs the variants release, lto and lto-hardened have aot: false. oven-sh/WebKit#923 resolved Thread::tryCreate() this way.
The compiler's own code for a built-in oven-sh/WebKit#923 changes builtins/ObjectConstructor.js (upstream WebKit/WebKit@37aa2b5bd94d) and no file under aot/builtins/handwritten/. handwritten/ObjectConstructor.ts is upstream's file with types, and compiled programs run it. The generator only checks that each function has an export of the same name (collectHandwrittenFile).
The fork's cell types oven-sh/WebKit#923: upstream's new fast path for { ...fn } reads the Structure alone, and the merge had to keep CompiledClosureType out of it.
Options of B3 and Air b3/B3Policy.cpp, b3/air/AirPolicy.cpp and test/aot/back-end-options-from-environment.test.ts. No upgrade has met it yet.
Function numbers oven-sh/WebKit#923: 42 failing testaot tests, 62 files changed. #47112: five files of test/aot/engine-tests.
The fork's Test jobs .github/workflows/ci.yml in the fork: release needs plan, build and build-tested, not test. It publishes a pull request's release when lanes failed.
Merge commit oven-sh/WebKit#889 landed as a merge commit with two parents.

What ran here

Linux x64, the engine at fcc1ea0973a4.

The table generator, with one change to the engine's sources each time:

Change Result
A new function in builtins/ArrayPrototype.js error: nothing names ArrayPrototype: brandNewUpstreamMethod: say with callsFunctions which built-ins native code calls it for, implement an overload with it, list it in b.startup, or leave it out with b.excluded
defaultAsyncFromAsyncIteratorWithNext removed from builtins/ArrayConstructor.js, as upstream did error: aot/builtins/engine-syntax.builtins.ts: $defaultAsyncFromAsyncIteratorWithNext as Value: no runtime function has this name
A new row in @begin jsonTable error: runtime/JSONObject.cpp:3215: JSON.brandNewThing is declared and own-properties.txt does not have it
An @intrinsic that nothing declares WebKit's engine.ts passes. Bun's src/codegen/builtins/index.ts --javascriptcore= fails: $brandNewUpstreamIntrinsic as Call is used in src/js, the engine's built-ins, the models or the prelude and has no line in [..] engine-syntax.builtins.ts

The first three rows are from WebKit's aot/builtins/generator/engine.ts. Bun's generator runs the same modules.

Function numbers:

  • With the removed function and its declaration taken out, 69 lines of FOR_EACH_AOT_ENGINE_BUILTIN_FUNCTION differ. Number 23 is gone and 68 numbers are one lower, as Upgrade to upstream WebKit e8f704815e94 WebKit#923 reports.
  • bun scripts/build/aot-paths.ts prints the folder of the prebuilt's AOTBuiltinIDs.h. Its list is the list that the generator writes from the same commit.
  • runtimefunction id=31 changed to 30 in test/aot/engine-tests/builtins/builtin-use-callee.ir gives unexpected diagnostic InvalidCreatorRecord. The message does not name the number.

jsc and testaot, built with --target=engine-test-programs from the prebuilt's objects and Bun's table (debug, ASAN):

  • bun-aot-builtins-table.js exits with 0. Without ASAN_OPTIONS=detect_leaks=0 it exits with 1 on LeakSanitizer.
  • $vm.aotBuiltinMismatches() prints Array.prototype.at: is missing after a delete, and Math.brandNew: is not in the table after an addition.
  • testaot run test/aot/engine-tests: 375 passed, 3 failed, 1 todo, in 7 minutes. The three are run-in-shell tests, where jsc exits with 1 on LeakSanitizer. With ASAN_OPTIONS=detect_leaks=0 the three pass.

A debug build of Bun with the prebuilt engine (bun bd):

  • bun bd build --compile --aot on a program that calls Object.groupBy, Array.from and Math.sumPrecise takes 1 minute 53 seconds. The executable prints what bun bd <file> prints.
  • bun bd test test/aot/builtins/own-properties.test.ts: 17 pass, 0 fail.

Configure with a checkout of the pin as the local WebKit (--profile=debug-local --configure-only):

  • The graph has jsc, testaot, testb3 and testair, and the table step with --javascriptcore= and --engine-out=<build>/deps/WebKit/JavaScriptCore/DerivedSources/aot.
  • With --aot=off the compile edges have -DENABLE_AOT=0, and there is no bundle of aot/.
  • That --aot=off configure removed vendor/mimalloc under a build that ran in the same checkout. The text warns about it.

Not run

  • No build with a local WebKit ran to its end. bun run jsc:build:debug, --target=testaot and the --aot=off build reached configure only. The same tests and the same jsc ran from the prebuilt's objects.
  • testaot all on the engine's own 4,967 .ir files.

Related

The engine half of the ahead-of-time compiler, Source/JavaScriptCore/aot
in oven-sh/WebKit, is fork-only code. A merge of upstream never
conflicts in it, so the command needs explicit steps for it:

- what to carry over by hand before the build: the entries, emitters,
hand-kept copies and models of built-ins, conflicts under ENABLE(AOT),
the fork's own cell types, options of B3 and Air
- what to run on the local build: the table generator, the numbers of
  the engine's built-in functions in tests, bun-aot-builtins-table.js,
  testaot, a compiled program, own-properties.txt
- the fork's Test jobs, which the release does not wait for
- the compiler's tests in Bun's CI

Also replace two stale lines: the fork has no build-preview.yml, and
the lane names are in .github/scripts/lanes.mjs. The WebKit pull
request lands as a merge commit.

Status: ready for review. The change is one file, .claude/commands/upgrade-webkit.md. No code changes.

  • The new steps come from the first upgrade after Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631 (Upgrade to upstream WebKit e8f704815e94 WebKit#923, Upgrade WebKit to e8f704815e94 #47112) and from the notes in the engine's aot/README.md.
  • The commands of the new text ran against the pinned engine (fcc1ea0973a4): the table generator with four simulated upstream changes, bun-aot-builtins-table.js, testaot run test/aot/engine-tests (378 pass, 1 todo with ASAN_OPTIONS=detect_leaks=0), bun bd build --compile --aot, and own-properties.test.ts.
  • Not built: a local WebKit. bun run jsc:build:debug, --target=testaot and the --aot=off build reached configure only. The description lists this under Notes.
  • CI: build 134597 passed. The change is one Markdown file, and no test reads it. The only red steps are test-aot-drawn on Debian, which are allowed to fail. They run tests of the ahead-of-time compiler. Five other tests passed on a retry.

This PR only updates the WebKit upgrade instructions and does not change product behavior. Before merge, fix two gaps in the new steps: refresh the fork's main and tags before the AOT history check, and run the no-AOT build from the Bun repository root. Without these, the runbook can miss fork-only AOT commits or fail on that command.

- Line 45: Update the AOT history-check instructions in the WebKit upgrade guide
to fetch the origin main reference and tags before running the git log
comparison, so the comparison uses current fork history and locally available
preview tags; keep upstream fetching in place.
- Line 46: Clarify the no-AOT build step so `bun scripts/build.ts` runs from the
Bun repository root, not `vendor/WebKit`; add a return to the root before the
command or explicitly state its required working directory.
