Problem

  • Two tests in test/js/node/http/node-http-pinned-write.test.ts cannot fail: a client disconnect while a large write is draining releases the pin and a second write before drain releases the pin on the first buffer.
  • Both write a plain Buffer (Buffer.alloc) and expect detached === true after transfer(). Since Streams: one PipeReader loop with owned chunks, hold-not-adopt buffer pins, right-sized native pulls #38886 a pending res.write() does not pin a plain Buffer (pinStorage, src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:3709). So transfer() always detaches it.
  • Both pass with the unpin removed from clear_pending_pinned_write (src/runtime/server/NodeHTTPResponse.rs:1888).

Fix

  • Both write a Buffer over an ArrayBuffer (Buffer.from(new ArrayBuffer(n))), which a pending write pins.
  • Both assert the pin first: after the first res.write(), transfer() must leave detached === false. After the close or the second write it must be true.
  • The second-write test reads through a paused net.Socket, so the client cannot drain the first write. Both skip Windows, like the first test: Winsock takes the whole write.
  • Verified: bun bd test on that file, 11 pass (also with --debug-aot). Each changed test fails when its release path keeps the pin (Notes).

Background

  • A res.write() above 16 KiB does not copy the bytes the kernel did not take. NodeHTTPResponse holds that tail until a drain, a second write, or the close.
  • A held tail pins its ArrayBuffer. transfer() copies a pinned ArrayBuffer and leaves it attached. Without a pin, transfer() detaches it.
  • Considered keeping both tests on Windows. There the first transfer() detaches the buffer and a second one throws TypeError: Receiver is detached.
Notes

Only the test file changes. The local runs below are from a debug build with ASAN of main 11c3671, Linux x64, with the test file at 78f47d0.

The head 94fd35b merges main da867c6. The merge does not change the test file or NodeHTTPResponse.rs. A debug build with ASAN of that head gives:

  • The whole file: 11 pass in 2 of 2 runs.
  • The two tests: 12 of 12 runs pass.
  • With the unpin removed (:1888): the two tests of this PR fail, and the two tests of main pass.

The two tests against a broken release. Each row is a local change to NodeHTTPResponse.rs that is not part of this PR. "Keeps the pin" means that the path sets pinned_value to ZERO before it calls clear_pending_pinned_write, so the call clears the pending write and does not unpin.

NodeHTTPResponse.rs The two tests on main The two tests in this PR
unchanged 2 pass 2 pass
clear_pending_pinned_write does not unpin (:1888) 2 pass 2 fail: detachedAfterClose: false, detachedAfterSecondWrite: false
the abort path keeps the pin (handle_abort_or_timeout, :1490) 2 pass the disconnect test fails, the second-write test passes
spill_pending_pinned_write keeps the pin (:1915) 2 pass the second-write test fails, the disconnect test passes
  • The whole file with the unpin removed: main has 10 pass and 1 fail (the first test). This PR has 8 pass and 3 fail.
  • With a write that holds the tail of such a buffer and does not pin it (:2245), both tests of this PR fail on detachedWhilePending: true.
  • A trace of the release call sites: the disconnect test releases the pin in handle_abort_or_timeout, the second-write test in spill_pending_pinned_write, the first test of the file in drain_pending_pinned_write.
  • The column for main was measured with the test file of main at 11c3671.

Stability.

  • bun bd test ... -t "releases the pin": 12 of 12 runs pass. The whole file: 3 of 3 runs give 11 pass.
  • In both tests the client runs on the thread of the handler, so it reads nothing before the handler returns. The kernel takes 2.50 MiB of the 64 MiB write in every run (tryWriteBody partial: 2621299 / 67108864, 10 of 10 runs of the second-write test).
  • Release build 367d939: the two tests pass in 6 of 6 runs.
  • bun bd test --debug-aot gives the same 11 passes. test/aot/other-suites/bun-tests.same.txt lists this file.
  • CI build 134395 ran the file at 78f47d0 on nine lanes with no failure: Linux x64 and aarch64 (glibc and musl), Linux x64 with ASAN, Windows x64 and aarch64. Build 134329 did the same at 3c8691b.
  • No macOS lane ran the file in those builds. The four macOS test jobs of build 134395 waited for an agent from 09:52 to 15:06 UTC on 28 October and then expired. That is the only reason the build ended as failed.
  • The merge commit 94fd35b has [macos tests] in its message. For such a commit, .buildkite/ci.ts (darwinTestsEnabled) gives the build the three macOS test lanes that main uses.
  • Build 135168 ran the file at 94fd35b on both macOS aarch64 lanes: 11 pass and 33 expect() calls on the macOS 26 lane and on the 14 aarch64 lane (its agent runs macOS 15). The two changed tests are not skipped there. So the first write leaves a pinned tail on macOS too.
  • Build 135168 ended as failed for one reason: the four macOS x64 test jobs waited for an agent from 11:58 to 16:06 UTC on 29 October and expired four times. No macOS x64 lane has run the file.
  • Every Linux and Windows test job of build 135168 passed. The logs of the Debian and Ubuntu lanes (x64 and aarch64) show the same 11 pass and 33 expect() calls.

Changes that came from review.

  • The first version of the second-write test read the response with fetch(), which reads on another thread. There the kernel took 2.50 MiB in 9 of 10 runs and 3.15 MiB in one. The test now uses the paused net.Socket of the first test.
  • The child of the disconnect test polled 50 times 10 ms for the close event. It now awaits the event. On the debug build the server observes the close 93 to 426 ms after destroy() (40 runs), so the 500 ms had little margin.
  • The second-write test compared only the length of the body. It now compares the bytes with the two writes. After the release it writes 0xff over the storage that transfer() moved, so a spill that did not copy the tail fails this check on every run.
  • Both tests keep the ArrayBuffer of the first transfer() referenced until the release is checked. If a write held the tail without a pin, that ArrayBuffer would own the bytes that the write still reads. With such a build, the version before this change failed on detachedWhilePending: true in 6 of 6 runs, so the predicted crash did not occur, but only an unreferenced ArrayBuffer owned the bytes.
  • Both tests reject their wait on a failure (REVIEW.md, "wire failures to reject"). In the second-write test, a handler that throws fails the test in 0.9 s with that error, and a connection that the server drops fails it in 0.6 s with the socket closed before the handler returned. The test disposes the socket. In the disconnect test, a handler that throws, a socket error, or a socket that closes before any data ends the child with exit code 1 and the error on stderr (2.6 to 3.5 s).
  • The child of the disconnect test disconnects only after the first data event, and it fails if the response closed before that. With a handler that closes the response by itself, the test of main and the earlier commits of this PR passed in 3 of 3 runs. This version fails with the response closed before the client disconnected.
  • The disconnect test asserts one { stdout, stderr, exitCode } object, so a child that prints nothing shows its stderr.

Windows. Buildkite build 130795 (for #46479) ran the first test of the file on Windows with no skip. It fails on both lanes with TypeError: Receiver is detached at the transfer() after drain. So the first transfer() detached the buffer: the write left no pinned tail. On Windows the two tests had no pin to release. a second write before drain is ordered after the pending tail still checks the bytes of two writes there. Windows and macOS were not run locally.

Other open PRs that touch this file.

Cost.

  • transfer() on a pinned buffer copies it. Each of the two tests makes one more copy of the payload (64 MiB on main), as the first test of the file does.
  • In a run of the whole file on the debug build, the second-write test takes 0.7 to 1.2 s. The first version of this PR (fetch(), length only) took 0.3 s. Run alone it takes 1.3 to 1.8 s. The socket client receives the 64 MiB through data events, and the test hashes the payload and the body.
  • The disconnect test takes 1.9 to 3.0 s on the idle debug build. Its child needs 1.0 to 1.6 s to load its modules. With all 12 cores busy it took 2.5 to 5.0 s (6 runs, one at the 5 s timeout). At an earlier commit, one of 12 idle runs with test(node:http): cap SO_SNDBUF in the pinned-write tests and send 1 MiB, not 64 MiB #36376 applied also reached the timeout. The test of main took 3.0 to 4.7 s under the same load, and a resizable ArrayBuffer is copied into backpressure, which this PR does not change, timed out in 3 of 4 runs of the whole file. This is the debug build: the CI lanes above ran the file with no timeout.

no test proof · iteration 6 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/node/http/node-http-pinned-write.test.ts

…ert the pin first

`a client disconnect while a large write is draining releases the pin`
and `a second write before drain releases the pin on the first buffer`
wrote a plain Buffer. A pending res.write() does not pin a plain Buffer,
so transfer() detached it at any time and both tests passed with the
unpin removed.

Both tests now write a Buffer over an ArrayBuffer, assert that the
pending write pins it, and then assert the release. Both skip Windows,
where a write leaves no pinned tail.

Walkthrough

The pinned-write tests use ArrayBuffer-backed payloads to check attachment while writes are pending and after a client disconnects or a second write. Both tests skip Windows.

Changes

Pinned-write lifetime tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Disconnect during a pending write
test/js/node/http/node-http-pinned-write.test.ts
The test records buffer attachment and transfer results while the write is pending, then checks attachment after close. It compares the complete child-process output, including the moved buffer length, stderr, and exit code. The test skips Windows.
Release after a second write
test/js/node/http/node-http-pinned-write.test.ts
A paused socket keeps the first write pending. The test checks attachment before and after the second write, overwrites the moved storage, then verifies that both payloads arrive intact and in order. The test skips Windows.

Explanation

The title names the change: it pins the payload in the two pin-release tests and asserts the pin first, which matches the diff's scope (test file only, ArrayBuffer-backed payloads, and an initial detached===false check). It is specific and matches the PR objectives. Its wording is long at 86 characters and uses the 'test(node:http):' prefix, but it is not vague or off-topic.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's two required sections: "What does this PR do?" (covered by Problem, Fix, and Background) and "How did you verify your code works?" (covered by Verified, Notes, Stability, and CI results). It explains the defect, the fix, the local and CI verification, the review-driven changes, Windows behavior, related open PRs, and runtime cost. The template headings are not used verbatim, but the required information is present. The main gap is that the description is very long and includes a large amount of supporting detail beyond the template. It also contains an auto-generated evidence block ("no test proof") that is not part of the author's own content. No required section is missing, so the check passes.

Status: #47141 is open and ready for review. All review threads are resolved. The changed file passes on Linux, Windows and macOS aarch64. No macOS x64 job ran.

How to reproduce the problem

  1. On main (da867c6), remove the p.pinned_value.unpin_array_buffer() call from clear_pending_pinned_write (src/runtime/server/NodeHTTPResponse.rs:1888).
  2. Run bun bd test test/js/node/http/node-http-pinned-write.test.ts -t "releases the pin".
  3. With the test file of main, both tests pass. With the test file of this PR, both tests fail (detachedAfterClose: false, detachedAfterSecondWrite: false).

CI (build 135168, commit 94fd35b)

  • No test failed. The build ended as failed for one reason: the four darwin 14 x64 - test-bun jobs waited for an agent from 11:58 to 16:06 UTC and expired four times.
  • The changed file ran on both macOS aarch64 lanes (macOS 26 and macOS 15): 11 pass, 33 expect() calls. The two changed tests are not skipped there.
  • Every Linux and Windows test job passed. On Windows the two changed tests are skipped.
  • The diff is ready to merge. The only open step is a retry of the four macOS x64 jobs, which needs a free macOS x64 agent.

The second-write test read the response with fetch(), which reads on
another thread while the handler runs. The test asserts that the first
write leaves a pinned tail, so the client must not read before the
handler returns. A paused net.Socket, as in the first test of the file,
makes that hold on every run.

…-release tests

- The child of the disconnect test awaits the 'close' event of the
response. It polled 50 times 10 ms before.
- The disconnect test asserts one { stdout, stderr, exitCode } object,
so a child that prints nothing shows its stderr.
- The second-write test compares the body bytes with the two writes.
  It compared only the length.
- The second-write test rejects its wait when the handler throws or the

LGTM — the latest push addresses both earlier nits (the child now awaits the close event, and the second-write test checks the body bytes), and the two tests now assert the pin before asserting its release.

What was reviewed:

  • The closed / serverReady wiring: the handler's catch path rejects and destroys, the client socket's error and close reject before the handler returns, and the later once(socket, "close") does not conflict with the earlier once-listener (rejecting an already-resolved promise is a no-op).
  • await using socket on the net.Socket: Readable[Symbol.asyncDispose] resolves on an already-closed socket whose readable ended and writable finished, which is the state after Connection: close.
  • The if (!detachedWhilePending) guards: they only skip a transfer() that would throw on a detached buffer, and the combined toEqual still fails on detachedWhilePending: true.
  • The two new skipIf(isWindows) skips match the existing first test's stated reason; without a pin on Windows the two tests had no release to assert there.
Extended reasoning...

The diff touches only test/js/node/http/node-http-pinned-write.test.ts, reworking two existing tests so the written Buffer is ArrayBuffer-backed (and therefore actually pinned by a pending write), asserting the pin holds right after write and is released after close or a second write, replacing a setTimeout poll with an awaited close promise, and replacing fetch() with a paused net.Socket plus sha1/Buffer.compare checks on the received body. No production code or security-sensitive surface is touched. The file is not covered by CODEOWNERS, the bug hunt ran dry with no findings, the only prior inline comments were my own nits and the last commit addresses both, and the other bot reviews are COMMENTED rather than CHANGES_REQUESTED.

… tests

- Both tests keep the ArrayBuffer that the first transfer() returns until
the release is checked. If a write holds the tail without a pin, that
ArrayBuffer owns the bytes that the write still reads.
- The second-write test writes 0xff over the storage that transfer()
moved. The client must still receive the bytes of the first write.
- The child of the disconnect test reports the byte length of the moved
storage. A handler that throws ends the child with its error.

LGTM — test-only change, and the two points from my earlier pass (the setTimeout poll loop and the length-only body check) are now addressed.

What was reviewed:

  • Confirmed the premise in src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp (pinStorage): a bufferless OversizeTypedArray is only Held, an ArrayBuffer-backed view is Pinned, so the switch to Buffer.from(new ArrayBuffer(n)) is what lets detachedWhilePending === false be observed.
  • Checked failure wiring in both tests: handler throws reject closed/serverReady, socket error/premature close reject serverReady, and the child's JSON key order matches the toEqual string.
  • Checked that await using on net.Socket resolves to Readable.prototype[Symbol.asyncDispose], and that the 0xff fill of the moved storage happens after the synchronous spill in res.write(second), so a reference-holding spill would fail the sha1 check rather than pass.
Extended reasoning...

The change touches one test file, test/js/node/http/node-http-pinned-write.test.ts, reworking two existing tests so they write an ArrayBuffer-backed Buffer (which a pending write actually pins), assert the pin before the release, read through a paused net.Socket, and compare body bytes instead of lengths; both tests gain a commented test.skipIf(isWindows) matching the file's first test. No runtime or security-sensitive code is modified. The decision to approve rests on the diff being test-only and self-contained, the pin semantics the tests depend on being verifiable in bindings.cpp, the failure paths being wired to reject rather than hang, and my prior inline feedback having been addressed by later commits; no CODEOWNER covers the path and the remaining third-party bot thread at line 508 was followed by a commit that rewrote that region.

…equire an open response

The child of the disconnect test raced the first data event against the
promise of the response close. A response that closed by itself resolved
the race, and the test passed with no disconnect of the client.

The child now waits for the first data event. A handler that throws, a
socket error, or a socket that closes first rejects the wait. The child
fails if the response closed before the client disconnects.

LGTM — test-only change that turns two previously unfalsifiable pin-release tests into ones that assert the pin first, and the points raised in earlier rounds are addressed in the current code.

What was reviewed:

  • Rejection wiring in both tests: handler throw, socket error, and premature close all reject the awaited promise; post-settle rejects are no-ops, and the detachedWhilePending ? copy : transfer() ternary avoids a "Receiver is detached" TypeError on the second transfer.
  • await using socket on a net.Socket: valid, it inherits Symbol.asyncDispose from Readable (src/js/internal/streams/readable.ts:261) and resolves cleanly on a normally closed socket.
  • Assertions: the child's full JSON stdout is compared with exitCode last; the second-write test checks sha1 of the first 64 MiB and byte-equality of the 1024-byte tail after overwriting the moved storage, so a spill that kept a raw reference would fail.
  • Windows skips carry a reason comment; no CODEOWNERS entry covers this file.
Extended reasoning...

The PR touches one test file, test/js/node/http/node-http-pinned-write.test.ts (+94/-36), reworking two tests in the node:http pinned-write suite to use an ArrayBuffer-backed Buffer so a pending write actually pins it, asserting the pin before the release, replacing a setTimeout polling loop with awaited events, and switching the second-write client from fetch() to a paused net.Socket for deterministic backpressure. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Both inline findings from my earlier rounds (polling loop, length-only body check) are fixed, the last commit removed the Promise.race that could let a self-closing response pass, the single unresolved coderabbit thread sits on the line that commit rewrote, and no CODEOWNER covers the file. The change is small, follows harness conventions (bunEnv/bunExe, port 0, 127.0.0.1, skipIf with reason, combined stdout/stderr/exitCode assertion), and the bug hunt ran dry, which decided approve.

…release-tests-can-fail

[macos tests]

The two changed tests assert a pinned tail after a large write, which
depends on the kernel. No macOS lane has run them yet: the untiered
macOS test jobs of the earlier builds of this branch never started.
