http: HTTPResponseMetadata owns its buffers and builds its view on demand - #47098
HTTPResponseMetadata, the response head given to fetch, bun install and S3, frees its header list through the picohttp::Response<'static> view it stores: heap::destroy(ptr::from_ref(list).cast_mut()) (src/http/lib.rs:185). A pointer made from &T may only read, so the free is undefined behaviour.
HTTPResponseMetadata owns headers: Box<[Header]> and the StringBuilder that holds the text. It stores no reference into them: response() builds the view from &self.
AsyncHTTP.response, a 'static copy of that view, and AsyncHTTP::clear_data() are removed. Its one reader, bun file.md, keeps the status code.
Verified: bun run rust:miri (5 of 6 bun_http tests are UB on the old storage) and test/internal/source-lints/self-receiver-reclaim.test.ts, which now bans this spelling. Also fetch, S3 and install suites.
Self-reviewed: 10 concerns raised, 9 addressed. Not taken: an audit of what else sync_progress_from copies.
Background
Miri interprets Rust tests and checks what each pointer may do. A reference or a Box inside a value is protected while a call holds that value.
The first commit keeps the old storage behind the new constructor. There, bun run rust:miri -p bun_http stops 5 of the 6 tests (each run alone) with Undefined Behavior: deallocation through <tag> at alloc[0x0] is forbidden, the conflicting tag has state Frozen which forbids this deallocation (acting as a child write access). The tag comes from the heap::destroy(core::ptr::from_ref(list).cast_mut()) line of the Drop. The sixth test has no header, so it frees nothing.
At the head of the branch 6 of 6 pass, and bun run rust:miri passes for all 22 crates.
Sizes: size_of in a const, compiled with the flags of the release build. The AsyncHTTP block stays in the 2,560 B bin of mimalloc.
Allocations: gdb records each block that clone_metadata allocates and the mi_free call that frees it, over 500 fetches. Each block is freed one time, and none is live at exit.
Instructions: the instructions that one call executes in the address range of the function (gdb nexti, the same count for three calls). One small fetch calls each of the four one time: +7 in total. Each further progress callback: -19.
Drop glue of HTTPResponseMetadata (objdump): 24 to 22 instructions, 2 to 3 conditional branches, 2 frees in each, 4 to 0 stores.
The Miri job builds 6 more crates: bun_http, bun_picohttp, bun_dns, bun_brotli, bun_brotli_sys, bun_libdeflate_sys. bun run rust:miri -p bun_http takes 58 s with no cache, 6 to 11 s after a change to bun_http, and 3 s warm. The 6 tests run for 1.3 s. The job runs its crates at the same time: bun_http takes 48 s of a run of 988 s, and bun_sema takes 898 s.
The table is from before the rebase onto 05a0ec9. Between the two bases, main changes none of clone_metadata, on_async_http_callback_raw and sync_progress_from.
perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed in my container.
Fail on this branch and on a debug build of main (b9f2ec3), the same tests in each: 4 in fetch.test.ts (#3545, which needs the public internet, and timeouts in simultaneous HTTPS fetch, website with tlsextname and Bun.file > non-existent file throws > arrayBuffer) and fetch(file://...) does not leak the response url WTFStringImpl in fetch-leak.test.ts.
s3-list-objects.test.ts has timeouts in tests that run beside a 6.8 s test: 1 on main, 1 and 2 in two runs of this branch.
Response > utf16 arrayBuffer (with gc) in fetch.test.ts takes 4.9 to 5.6 s against a limit of 5 s in each build. Alone, it fails 3 of 3 runs in each. It does not use the HTTP client.
bun file.md with a remote image stages 1 file for a 200 and for a 301 to a 200. It stages 0 files for a 404, a 500 and a refused connection. A debug build of main (05a0ec9) gives the same five results (a probe that is not in the PR).
The lint
It sees heap::take, heap::destroy, Box::from_raw and Box::from_non_null whose argument, in the same expression, is ptr::from_ref(x), NonNull::from(&x), &x, &raw const x or addr_of!(x).
A turbofish can have nested arguments, on the call or on its path: ptr::from_ref::<Vec<u8>>(x), NonNull::<u8>::from(&x). The patterns that main has for self read it the same way now.
picohttp::Header is Copy and has no lifetime, so a Header copied out of response() is not tied to the metadata. No reader does that. picohttp: add lifetime parameter to Header #31179 gives Header a lifetime.
AsyncHTTP::sync_progress_from still copies client.url, client.flags and client.remaining_redirect_count. This PR does not check which of them the JS thread reads.
One allocation for the header array and the text would save one malloc and one free per response head. It needs its own layout code and its own numbers.
response() reports bytes_read: 0. On main the stored copy kept the count of the parser. Nothing reads it from a metadata.
Bound the remote image prefetch of bun file.md by a deadline and a byte budget #45818 rewrites RemoteImageDownload and conflicts with main in src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs. This branch adds one conflict there. Its version does not read AsyncHTTP.response, so its side replaces the hunk of this PR. Its metadata.response.headers.list then becomes metadata.response().headers.list.
Reproduced: at the first commit of this PR, bun run rust:miri -p bun_http stops 5 of the 6 new tests with Undefined Behavior: deallocation through <tag> ... is forbidden. With src/ from main, bun test test/internal/source-lints/self-receiver-reclaim.test.ts lists src/http/lib.rs:185.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
HTTP response metadata now owns copied response data and exposes accessors. AsyncHTTP no longer stores a response, and HTTP consumers use metadata accessors. The change also expands reclaim lint coverage and adds bun_http to the default Miri crate set.
Changes
HTTP metadata ownership and access
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Owned metadata contract and construction src/http/lib.rs
HTTPResponseMetadata stores copied response and URL data and exposes borrowed response and URL views. clone_metadata uses its constructor. Tests cover metadata reads and drops across moves, storage, and failure results.
AsyncHTTP no longer stores or clears a response. Its callbacks retain URL, timing, error, and selected progress state. S3 portable cleanup no longer calls clear_data.
Install, fetch, and S3 code now reads response, URL, and status data through metadata accessors. Remote image downloads store the response status code and stage images only when it is 200.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template with both required sections, "What does this PR do?" (titled Problem, Fix, Background, Downsides) and "How did you verify your code works?" (covered under Proof, Suites, and the lint section). It states the Miri undefined-behavior cause, the design change that removes the stored response view and clear_data, and concrete verification: bun run rust:miri, the source-lint test, and fetch, S3, and install suites with named failures attributed to main. It also records measured tradeoffs and open PR conflicts. The template sections are present and substantively filled, so the check passes.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the widened lint regex against every tracked .rs file in src/ (multi-line aware): it matches exactly the two allow-listed sites (src/http/AsyncHTTP.rs:97, src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs:506) and nothing else, so no new false positives. The on_async_http_callback collapse to err = result.fail is behavior-preserving since is_success() is fail.is_none(), and no consumer reads bytes_read off a stored metadata view, so the hard-coded 0 in response() has no reader.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the self-referential HTTPResponseMetadata (leaked header slice freed through a shared-reference pointer in Drop) with owned Box<[Header]> plus a StringBuilder text buffer and a borrowed response() view, removes AsyncHTTP.response/clear_data, migrates all consumers in install, fetch and S3, adds bun_http to the Miri crate list with unit tests, and broadens the self-receiver-reclaim source lint. It touches no auth, crypto or input-parsing surface; the risk is memory-ownership in the HTTP result path. One inline finding on a vacuous test assertion is posted and a further verified finding was withheld, so this is not an approve.

I reviewed the latest push and didn't find any bugs; the dropped_in_place test now reads the replaced head instead of asserting on its own assignment. Because this reshapes an unsafe, cross-thread ownership structure in the HTTP client, a human look would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
HTTPResponseMetadata::new/response()/Drop: _text (StringBuilder) frees its buffer in Drop, Header pointers and both RawSlices target that heap buffer (not the struct), so moves and the Box<[Header]> dealloc are sound; bytes_read: 0 has no consumer.
HTTP-thread callback: err = result.fail is equivalent to the old is_success() branch since is_success() is fail.is_none(); the one AsyncHTTP.response reader (RemoteImageDownload) now keeps status_code on the struct, initialised in the MaybeUninit slot and gated by the same err check.
Widened lint: ran the new pattern over src/ — only the two sites added to ALLOW match; no stale clear_data()/.response callers remain.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces a self-referential HTTPResponseMetadata (Box::leak'd header list freed through a shared-reference-derived pointer) with an owning struct that builds its picohttp::Response view on demand, removes AsyncHTTP.response/clear_data, rewires six consumers (fetch, install, S3, run_command), adds six Miri-targeted unit tests, enables bun_http in the Miri crate list, and widens the self-receiver-reclaim source lint. It touches no auth, injection or data-exposure surface; the sensitive surface is unsafe-Rust ownership across the HTTP and JS threads. No findings this run and the one prior inline note was addressed by the latest commit, but the size (11 files, +321/-120) and the unsafe cross-thread ownership refactor in the HTTP client argue for a human reviewer rather than auto-approval.
…Miri
`HTTPClient::clone_metadata` moves into `HTTPResponseMetadata::new`, with the
storage unchanged, and the metadata gets `response()` and `url()`.
`bun_http` joins the Miri crates with a test module that moves the metadata
the way a result moves it.
`bun run rust:miri -p bun_http` fails at this commit, in 5 of the 6 tests:
the `Drop` frees the header list through the `&'static [Header]` view it
stores. The next commit changes the storage.
…mand
`HTTPResponseMetadata` stored a `picohttp::Response<'static>` and freed the
header list through the `&'static [Header]` of that view. A pointer made
from a shared reference may only read, so the free is undefined behaviour
under Tree Borrows and Stacked Borrows.
- `HTTPResponseMetadata` owns `headers: Box<[Header]>` and the
`StringBuilder` that holds the text. It stores no reference into its own
buffers: `response()` builds the view from `&self`. The surface is the
one in #40385.
- `AsyncHTTP.response`, a `'static` copy of that view, is removed, and with
it `AsyncHTTP::clear_data()`, which only cleared it. Its one reader, the
remote image download of `bun file.md`, keeps the status code itself.
- The `self-receiver-reclaim` source lint also bans `heap::take`,
`heap::destroy` and `Box::from_raw` on a pointer spelled from a shared
reference. One known instance, `free_owned_href`, stays allowed by exact
count.

`dropped_in_place` ended with `stored = None; assert!(stored.is_none())`,
an assertion on the value that the line before it assigned. The clear and
the store now go through a helper that mirrors `clone_metadata`, and the
test reads the head that is stored afterwards.
`read` compares every header name and value, not the count and one name.

I reviewed the rebased PR and didn't find any bugs; the earlier vacuous assert!(stored.is_none()) in dropped_in_place is gone in 2c7a589, which now reads the replaced head through every accessor. Because this reworks ownership of unsafe, cross-thread response state in the HTTP client core that fetch, bun install and S3 all consume, a human look would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
HTTPResponseMetadata::new/response(): StringBuilder::drop frees the text buffer and headers: Box<[Header]> drops normally, so each head has one owner per allocation and no stored reference into them; the manual Drop that freed through ptr::from_ref(list) is deleted.
The callback collapse to (*this).err = result.fail is behavior-preserving: HTTPClientResult::is_success() is exactly fail.is_none(), so the old success branch also wrote None.
Consumer migration: no remaining readers of AsyncHTTP.response, AsyncHTTP::clear_data, metadata.owned_buf or the old metadata.response field anywhere in src/; RemoteImageDownload.status_code is read only after the err.is_some() gate, matching the old response.status_code read.
The widened lint regex applied to src/ matches exactly one site, free_owned_href in src/http/AsyncHTTP.rs:97, so the new ALLOW count of 1 is exact and the ratchet test should hold.
Extended reasoning...
The three commits replace the self-referential picohttp::Response<'static> stored in HTTPResponseMetadata (src/http/lib.rs) with owned headers: Box<[Header]> plus a StringBuilder text owner and an on-demand response() view, drop the AsyncHTTP.response field and clear_data(), migrate every consumer in install, fetch, S3 and run_command.rs, add a Miri-run unit-test module and bun_http to the Miri crate list, and widen the self-receiver-reclaim source lint to ban frees through shared-reference-derived pointers. No security-sensitive surface (auth, crypto, injection) is touched; the change is a memory-ownership refactor of HTTP response-head state that crosses the HTTP thread and JS thread. Deferring rather than approving because the change relies on unsafe lifetime reasoning (append_raw unbound slices, RawSlice views, bitwise ptr::write copies of AsyncHTTP) across several subsystems that cannot be compiled or Miri-run in this session, and the Miri and suite results are author claims. The prior inline finding was verified addressed in the code itself, not just by thread resolution, and no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files.

The reclaim lint read a turbofish with `[^>]*`, so it stopped at the first
`>` of `from_ref::<Vec<u8>>(list)` and did not see the call. It also
required `NonNull::from` with nothing between the two names, so
`NonNull::<u8>::from(&*p)` passed.
One pattern for a turbofish, with nested arguments, and one for a path now
serve the reclaim call, the `self` spellings and the shared reference
spellings.

I reviewed the four new commits and didn't find any bugs; the test change in 2c7a589 addresses the earlier inline note (every store in dropped_in_place is now followed by read). Because this reworks ownership of the response head that fetch, bun install and S3 all consume across the HTTP/JS thread boundary, a human look would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
err = result.fail replacing the is_success() branch in on_async_http_callback_raw: is_success() is fail.is_none(), so the write is identical on both paths.
Removal of AsyncHTTP.response / clear_data(): grepped src/ for remaining readers — none; bun file.md now reads its own status_code set in the same callback. Field drop order in HTTPResponseMetadata (headers before _text) involves no pointer deref, and the empty-head case (cap == 0) is a no-op in StringBuilder::drop.
response().bytes_read is hard-coded to 0: no consumer of the metadata reads bytes_read.
The widened lint regex: the only in-tree match is free_owned_href in src/http/AsyncHTTP.rs, covered by the new ALLOW entry of exactly 1; TranspilerJob::reset_for_pool named in the description no longer contains the pattern on this base.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the self-referential Response<'static> plus Drop in HTTPResponseMetadata (src/http/lib.rs) with owned Box<[Header]> and a StringBuilder, builds the view on demand, deletes AsyncHTTP.response/clear_data(), rewires seven consumers across install, fetch, S3 and run_command.rs, adds a Miri-run unit-test module, adds bun_http to the Miri crate list, and widens a source lint. It touches no auth, crypto or input-validation surface; it is a memory-ownership refactor on the HTTP result-dispatch path. The decisive facts for defer over approve: the hunt found nothing and the one prior inline finding is addressed, but the code is cross-thread ownership in a core path shared by three subsystems, the test suite could not be run in this session, and a coderabbitai inline comment on the lint test (19:52) precedes the last commit with no visible resolution metadata.
