Problem

  • import.meta.hot.accept("./dep") with no callback loads. When dep updates, the dev server throws TypeError: cbFn is not a function (minified: u is not a function). The page reloads.
  • acceptSpecifiers (src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts:216) stores the callback unchecked. replaceModules calls it at :807.
  • No user reported it. dev server: keep one import record for each import statement #46742 found it. Every release since 1.2.5 has it.

Fix

  • acceptSpecifiers is the only place that stores the callback. It now stores a no-op for undefined or null, like Vite and webpack.
  • Same class: dispose() with a nullish callback registers nothing, and accept(nonLiteral) reports the specifier. Types and docs mark the callback optional.
  • Verified: test/bake/dev/hot.test.ts (4 new tests fail without the change), bun-types.test.ts, the bake esm, bundle, html, css suites.
  • Self-reviewed: 24 concerns raised, 22 addressed. Not done: a behaviour matrix in the tests, and issues for two limits (reasons in Notes).

Background

  • hmr-module.ts is the dev server's hot module replacement runtime, embedded in the page and the server.
  • accept(dep, cb) stops the update of dep at this module. Bun patches the module's imports of dep, then calls cb.
  • Considered cbFn?.() at the call: a branch per update, and the stored type stays wrong. Considered a named error for a non-function: no demand.

Downsides

  • +59 B per embedded runtime, about +72 B per release binary. accept(dep, fn) runs 2 more bytecodes.
  • Without a callback, a value from require(), import() or load-time code stays old. On main the failed update reloaded the page.
  • The accepted dependency runs again without its dispose callbacks, as with accept(dep, cb) on main.
Notes

Decision for a maintainer. The runtime default needs none. The typed and documented form does. Vite tolerates the call at runtime and keeps cb required in its types. webpack types the callback as optional. If you prefer Vite's split, the devserver.d.ts, fixture, docs and accept() message hunks drop together. The runtime default and the dispose() guard stand alone with their tests. The declarations offer an omitted or undefined callback only. null for accept, and a missing callback for dispose, are runtime tolerances and stay type errors. Vite (acceptExports(exportNames, cb?), dispose(cb)) and webpack (accept(modules, callback?), dispose(callback)) declare them the same way.

Reach. Only a hand-written accept(<literal>) with one argument that names a static import reaches the bug. The types on main reject that call, so it comes from plain JavaScript. On the server, a route logs the error on each edit and Bun does not emit bun:afterUpdate. Before 1.4.4 the server form ended the dev server process (#46270 added the .catch). On released builds accept(dep, () => {}) avoids the bug. This is not a crash in the sense of #46021. A GitHub code search sample of 30 results has 8 dependency accepts, and 1 omits the callback (sidorares/hot-module-replacement).

Behaviour, main against this PR (29 scenarios on the real hmr-module.ts, 10 differ, 0 new load-time throws):

  • Callback omitted, undefined or null, string and array form: the update was rejected. Now Bun applies it and emits bun:afterUpdate. An accept callback of another module for the same dependency now runs.
  • Callback false, 0, '', 123, {}: unchanged. The update fails with the engine TypeError, as in Vite (callback?.(mod)). The false row in the client test holds ?? against ||.
  • dispose(), dispose(undefined), dispose(null) on a self-accepting module: the next update threw fn is not a function. Now Bun applies it. Vite ignores a missing dispose callback (if (disposer)). webpack throws. This is not the fix for Bun dev server: K.onDispose is not iterable during HMR when index.html links a stylesheet + entry has both accept() and dispose() #29418 (that is bake: dispose a self-accepting HMR boundary once per hot update #41944).
  • accept(specifier) where the specifier is not a literal: still throws at load, with the string-literals message in place of requires a callback function. accept(123), accept({}) and accept(false) keep requires a callback function.
  • Every scenario that passes a function is unchanged.

Not covered. accept(dep, cb) has each of these limits on main. A callback-less accept(dep) now has them too, where main failed the update and reloaded the page:

Not changed.

  • import.meta.hot.on(event) without a handler. When Bun emits the event, the call throws and Bun rejects the update. For bun:beforeUpdate that is before Bun applies anything, so a server applies no later update. Vite logs an unhandled rejection there and applies the update. A vite: event name neither throws nor runs: on() stores it under bun::name (bake: make import.meta.hot.on/off accept the documented vite: event names #37786 was the fix, closed).
  • dispose(<non-function>) such as 123 still throws an engine TypeError on the update. Open PR Implement import.meta.hot for bun --hot #32856 (import.meta.hot for bun --hot) throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE at the call for every non-function, nullish included. This PR ignores a nullish one in the dev server, as Vite does.
  • An accept callback that throws still skips the accept callbacks behind it, React refresh and bun:afterUpdate.
  • accept(dep, cb) followed by accept(dep) keeps the last registration, as two callbacks did before. The callback-less call replaces cb.
  • import.meta.hot?.accept("./dep") still throws cannot be used indirectly at load (Fix import.meta.hot?.accept() throwing in dev server #35009, closed).

Measurements (main 179664e against this PR):

Self-review, not done. (1) A 10-row matrix of accept(dep) behaviour in hot.test.ts. Its rows pin behaviour of accept(dep, cb) that #46764, #46742 and #39488 change. The docs and the JSDoc now state the limits, and "Not covered" lists them. (2) Issues for the two limits that have no tracker. They are in "Not covered".

Tests. Each clause breaks a test when it changes: ?? to ||, ?? to a strict undefined test, a typeof guard that drops every non-function, the dispose guard made strict, the string or the array half of the accept() check, and the requires a callback function branch. The server test also counts console.error calls, so it still fails without the fix after #46764 (there bun:afterUpdate fires when an accept callback throws). The bun-types fixture lines fail against the old declarations. The docs snippet runs as written.

Suites (debug build). hot.test.ts 16 pass. esm 18, bundle 54, html 15, css 18, harness 3, sourcemap 2, plugins 3, dev-and-prod 12, hmr-socket-protocol 6, react-spa 10, bun-types 24 pass. Two bun bake hydrates ... tests in react-spa.test.ts sometimes time out at the 5 s default on this debug build, with and without the change.

no test proof · iteration 0 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/bake/dev/hot.test.ts

`import.meta.hot.accept("./dep")` and the array form registered a
dependency with no callback. The hot update of that dependency then
called `undefined` and failed with `TypeError: cbFn is not a function`.
The client reloaded the page. The server logged the error on each edit
and did not emit `bun:afterUpdate`.

`acceptSpecifiers` is the one place that stores the callback. It now
stores the existing no-op for a nullish callback, as Vite and webpack
do. A value that is not a function still fails the update, as before.

`import.meta.hot.dispose()` with a nullish callback registers nothing.
A one-argument `accept` with a specifier that is not a literal now
reports the specifier, because the callback is optional.

Status

  • Reproduced on main (179664e, debug build) and on 1.4.3-canary.1 with a Bun.serve HTML route. index.ts has import { value } from "./dep"; import.meta.hot.accept("./dep");. A save of dep.ts logs TypeError: cbFn is not a function (u is not a function on the release build), and the page reloads.
  • On a server route of a framework app, the same call logs the error on each edit, and Bun does not emit bun:afterUpdate.
  • The 4 new tests in test/bake/dev/hot.test.ts fail with the src/ and packages/ of main and pass with this PR.

Walkthrough

The HMR API now allows dependency acceptance without a callback and allows disposal without a callback. Runtime handling, type declarations, documentation, and tests cover these changes.

Changes

HMR callback handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Acceptance API and runtime behavior
docs/bundler/hot-reloading.mdx, packages/bun-types/devserver.d.ts, src/js_parser/p.rs, src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts
Dependency acceptance callbacks are optional for one specifier or an array. Runtime handling selects implicit acceptance when the callback is omitted or null. dispose accepts an omitted or null callback.
Callback behavior tests
test/bake/dev/hot.test.ts, test/integration/bun-types/fixture/index.ts
Tests cover callback-free acceptance in browser and server contexts, invalid one-argument calls, optional disposal callbacks, and TypeScript overloads.

Suggested reviewers: jarred-sumner

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · up to dc2bf

JavaScript users can use the new callback-free behavior, but TypeScript users cannot express all supported calls. Align the declarations before merging if full typed API support is required.

Explanation

The title "dev server: make the import.meta.hot.accept(dep) callback optional" names the primary change. The PR makes the callback for accept(dep) optional, and the runtime stores a no-op for a nullish callback. The objectives also cover related dispose() and accept(nonLiteral) changes, which the title does not mention. That is expected for a title. The title is specific and matches the changeset.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and relevant. It explains the problem, the implementation, behavior changes, limitations, performance impact, and verification results. It does not use the template headings exactly, but it provides the required information under equivalent sections.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make the dispose callback optional and nullable in the declaration.

The changed runtime accepts dispose() and dispose(null), but this declaration still requires a function. TypeScript rejects the omitted argument and, with strictNullChecks, rejects null. Update the declaration and add these calls to the type fixture. (typescriptlang.org)

On the dispose declaration (packages/bun-types/devserver.d.ts:157, outside the diff): not changed, on purpose.

  • dispose() without a callback registers nothing. The runtime guard only stops a missing cleanup function from failing the next hot update. The declaration does not offer a call that does nothing.
  • Vite has the same split. Its types require the callback (dispose(cb: (data: any) => void): void in types/hot.d.ts), and its client ignores a missing one (if (disposer)). webpack also requires the callback in module.d.ts.
  • With strictNullChecks, dispose() and dispose(null) stay type errors on this branch (TS2554 and TS2345).

The null question on the accept overloads has its answer in the review thread. The PR notes now state both choices under "Decision for a maintainer".

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts — Developers who follow the new docs and call accept("./dep") while importing ./dep twice get a silently stale second binding on every save, where the base reloaded the page. src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts:825 uses importer.imports!.indexOf(mod), which returns only the first entry, so only the first import statement's updateImport runs at :827. The deps list is one entry per import statement (parseEsmDependencies :566-571), so a named import plus a namespace import of the same dependency leaves the second one old. Fix: patch every index whose entry is mod (loop over imports instead of a single indexOf), and cover the array form too.

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: an importer with import { a } from "./dep" and import * as ns from "./dep" that calls import.meta.hot.accept("./dep") with no callback, which the new .d.ts (packages/bun-types/devserver.d.ts:131) and docs now present as patching "this module's import statements". On save of dep, replaceModules finds the no-op cb stored at src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts:224, the update stops at the importer, and patchImporters runs. At :825 indexOf(mod) yields only the first matching index because the dev server emits one deps entry and one updateImport closure per import statement (parseEsmDependencies :566-571). The second binding keeps the old namespace; bun:afterUpdate still fires, so nothing tells the user. On the base branch accept("./dep") with no callback threw cbFn is not a function at :810 and reloaded the page, so the user never saw a stale value. Remedy: iterate all indices of mod in importer.imports and call each updateImport[i].

Verification: src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts:825-827 const index = importer.imports!.indexOf(mod); ... importer.updateImport![index](exports); patches only the first slot. With the PR, acceptSpecifiers stores cb ?? implicitAcceptFunction (:224), so the update stops at the importer and the second namespace var is never reassigned. On base the client path threw cbFn is not a function at :810 and hmr-runtime-client.ts:107-110 called fullReload().

  • 🟡 src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts — Developers who call accept("./dep") from a module that also uses module.exports or require get a silently stale dependency on every save, where the base reloaded the page. src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts:824 skips any importer with esm false, and CommonJS-wrapped modules never receive imports/updateImport (loadModuleSync :319-344). With the no-op stored at :224 the update now stops at that importer and fires bun:afterUpdate with nothing patched. Fix: when the stored cb is implicitAcceptFunction and the importer is not ESM (or has no updateImport), fail the update as the base did, or document and reject the call at registration.

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: a dev-server module bundled as CommonJS (it uses module.exports or top-level require, so the printer emits a function and the runtime constructs it with isCommonJS true at src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts:322) that still contains import.meta.hot.accept("./dep"); the parser rewrites that call to hmr.acceptSpecifiers regardless of module kind (src/js_parser/p.rs:8430). On a save of dep, replaceModules at :686-688 finds the entry with cb: implicitAcceptFunction (:224) and pushes it to toAccept, so propagation stops. patchImporters at :824 does if (!importer.esm || !importer.updateImport) continue;, so nothing in the importer is updated; the no-op is then invoked at :810 and bun:afterUpdate is emitted at :817. The importer's require snapshot (mod.cjs ??= toCommonJS(mod.exports) at :148) keeps the old exports. On the base branch the same registration threw cbFn is not a function at :810, the client logged an error and reloaded, so the user never ran against stale code.

Verification: loadModuleSync CJS branch (src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts:319-344) constructs new HMRModule(id, true) (esm=false) and never sets imports/updateImport. patchImporters skips the importer at :824 (if (!importer.esm || !importer.updateImport) continue;), the no-op cb runs at :810, and emitEvent("bun:afterUpdate") fires at :817. So the PR turns a crash-then-reload into a silent no-op that signals success.

On the two findings outside the diff: no code change for either. I ran both cases on this branch.

Two import statements of one dependency. The stale binding needs two spellings of the file. For one spelling the dev server emits one entry, and both bindings get the new value. Results after a save of dep.ts, the same with and without a callback:

  • import { v } from "./dep" with import * as ns from "./dep": both are new.
  • Two named imports from "./dep": both are new.
  • A default and a named import from "./dep": both are new.
  • import { v } from "./dep" with import * as ns from "./dep.ts": the first is new, the second is old.

The last row is the behaviour of accept("./dep", cb) on main too. Open PR #46742 repairs it: patchImporters there patches every position of the module. The PR notes list this row under "Not covered".

An importer that holds the dependency from require() or import(). The docs and the JSDoc state this limit: such a value stays old, and a callback updates it. The update does not fail there, for two reasons.

  • A later require("./dep") or import("./dep") in that module returns the new module. I checked a CommonJS importer, an ES module with require(), and an ES module with import(). In each, the held value stays old, a new call returns the new value, and the page does not reload. A module that loads the dependency inside a function needs no callback. A forced failure reloads the page for that module on each save.
  • accept("./dep", () => {}) gives the same result on main. The callback-less call and the empty callback must not differ.
