macros: allocate a result's strings in the calling parse's arena - #46814
A macro result keeps its string bytes as long as the transpiler lives: +16 MB of RSS for an 8 MiB string on each bun --hot reload of the entry file or require() after a cache delete.
The cause is MacroContext.bump (src/js_parser_jsc/Macro.rs:72), an arena that nothing resets.
Fix
The parser passes its arena (p.arena) to the macro call and MacroContext.bump is removed, so the bytes are freed with the AST.
Correct because every path that keeps the AST alive keeps this arena.
The macro arm of e_call moves out of line: the recursive visit_expr_in_out frame stays 568 B.
Verified: test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts (12 new tests, 10 fail on main), transpiler.test.js. Self-reviewed: 8 concerns raised, 6 addressed, 2 need a maintainer (Notes).
Background
A macro (with { type: "macro" }) runs at transpile time, and its result becomes AST nodes.
MacroContext is the macro runner's state on a Transpiler. The JS thread keeps one until exit.
AST strings are slices with no lifetime, kept in the parse's arena until the file is printed.
Considered resetting the context arena after print: each owner needs a release site and a depth gate.
bun loop.ts prints 70 94 112 128 143 160 175 192 207 224 239 256 on main and 56 65 65 64 65 64 65 64 65 64 65 64 with this change.
Which lines are the fix. The arena argument at the two .call(...) sites in src/js_parser/visit/visit_expr.rs, and the removal of bump in src/js_parser_jsc/Macro.rs. e_call_macro is the macro arm of e_call, moved with no change of behaviour. The rest is comments.
What goes where. The AST nodes of a macro result (Expr::init, the item and property lists) already went to the calling parse. Only the string bytes went to the context arena: object keys, UTF-16 strings, and the text, data URL and decoded JSON strings of a returned Response or Blob. Those five sites take the arena as a parameter, so they did not change.
Why the arena outlives every reader. The parser's own strings already live in p.arena, so the AST could not outlive it before this change either. While a macro runs a nested transpile, the outer transpile holds its arena out of the VM's slot. The parse-error path parks the arena until the log is printed. Pending imports move it to AsyncModule with the AST. The bundler keeps the worker's arena for the whole bundle.
Where it reaches (release builds, process.memoryUsage.rss() after Bun.gc(true), MiB per parse, 8 MiB result unless a size is given):

bun --hot when the macro call is in a file that the entry imports. The work pool transpiles it, and each job already freed its context. 40 reloads with a 2 MiB result: 42 to 55 MiB on main, 41 to 55 here.
transformSync, bun build, Bun.build. Their context lives as long as one parse or one bundle. They now create one mimalloc heap fewer per context that runs a macro.
What frees the bytes on the JS thread.ModuleLoader::reset_arena resets the transpile arena after every synchronous transpile. #31855 changes that reset to keep the heap while it is under 8 MiB. With #31855 a small macro result stays until the arena passes that limit, so "0" above becomes "bounded by 8 MiB". The new tests allow for that: their bound is 16 MiB and each result is 2 MiB.

arena takes the place of source_dir in __bun_macro_context_call, which the runner reads from source, so the hook keeps 8 parameters. With that swap alone the x64 frame was 584 B. The file already keeps rarely taken arms out of this frame (PERF(port:frame) at e_jsx_element), and the macro arm now follows that. The declaration in bun_js_parser and the definition in bun_js_parser_jsc were compared parameter by parameter.

The 8 MiB row is the second Downsides bullet. The transpile arena is over its retain limit when the transpile returns, so it is reset there, and ArenaResetGuard resets it again. madvise calls per load go from about 16 to about 20 (qemu-x86_64 -strace). On main those bytes were never freed.

Order against #46677. The JSON arm of expr_from_blob parses in place over the Blob's bytes, so its escape-free strings dangle once the Blob is collected. #46677 corrects that, and this PR does not touch that arm. I ran the fixture of #46677 in 7 call orders: one macro returns {"key": "AAAA…"} as a Blob or as a Response, and a later macro call runs Bun.gc(true) and allocates 200 Blobs of the same size. A Blob result prints the other Blobs' bytes in 3 of 3 orders on both builds. A Response result does so in 4 of 6 orders on main and in 6 of 6 with this PR. The 2 orders that change are the ones where the collecting call directly follows the Response call. Nothing in this diff holds or releases a JS value, and I did not find what differs in those 2 orders. With #46677 the JSON text is copied into the arena, which is the parse arena after this PR.
Not in this PR
bun build --no-bundle parses into an arena that lives until exit. Max RSS for 6 files that call the 8 MiB macro is 237 MB on main and 238 MB here.
bun repl installs no AST scope, so the lists and nodes of each line stay, macro or not. A line with a 500,000-element array adds 8 MB on both builds, from a macro or from a literal.
bun --hot: a reload that changes the code of the entry file grows on both builds, with or without a macro. 40 reloads with a 2 MiB literal: 35 to 96 MiB on main, 32 to 82 here. With the macro: 42 to 189 on main, 40 to 113 here.
Box<MacroContext> and its hand-written deinit sites stay.
MacroContext::call keeps a raw pointer into self.macros while the macro runs JS. A macro that starts a second parse on the same Bun.Transpiler can grow that map and leave the pointer dangling. This is the same on main. A copy of the two fields by value removes it.
Fix effectively every native-code memory leak in Bun #30875 removed leak:js_parser_jsc.Macro.MacroContext.call from the LSan suppressions, and threaded the per-call arena into the printer for the same kind of leak (src/bundler/transpiler.rs:2278).
Tests. The 10 leak tests each parse a file 19 times and compare RSS after 3 and after 19 parses, with Bun.gc(true) after each. On main the difference is 32 to 65 MiB. Here it is -2 to 2 MiB (bound 16). The 2 other tests pass on main too: they compare every char of macro results across nested transpiles, a macro result as a macro argument, an async macro, and a second parse on the same Bun.Transpiler.
Self-review. A review of this diff raised 8 points. Addressed: the description names only the paths that grow, 2 bun --hot tests, a compile-time check of the hook's signature is gone from the diff (it covered 1 of 5 hooks), every added comment is one line, the e_call_macro doc comment, and the paragraph on what frees the bytes. The other 2 need a maintainer: the merge order against #46677 and #40059, and tracking issues for the bugs under "Not in this PR", which this PR does not change.
Suites run on the debug build: macro-test.test.ts (46 pass), transpiler.test.js, repl.test.ts, cli/test/isolation.test.ts, plugins.test.ts, bundler_edgecase.test.ts, bundler_barrel.test.ts, build-error.test.ts, scope-mismatch-panic.test.ts, disallow-code-generation-from-strings.test.ts, the source lints, regression tests 03830, 22656, 26360, 39900. The parser-only bun-sema binary links.
A macro result is spliced into the AST of the file that called the
macro. Its AST nodes already went to that parse. Its string bytes
(object keys, UTF-16 strings, the text, data URL and JSON arms of a
returned Response or Blob) went to an arena that `MacroContext` owned
and never reset. A context that lives as long as its transpiler kept
one copy of every result for each parse. The JS thread's
`vm.transpiler` is such a context: it parses the entry point and every
`require()`d file again on a `bun --hot` reload, a file again after a
cache delete, the files of a plugin's `onLoad`, each REPL line, and
each file of `bun test` when there is no isolation. One
`Bun.Transpiler` that calls `scan()` is another.
The parser now passes its own arena to the macro call and
`MacroContext.bump` is removed. The bytes live exactly as long as the
AST that holds them, on every path that already keeps that arena alive
(nested transpiles, the parse-error path, pending imports, the
bundler). `arena` takes the place of `source_dir` in the call, which
the runner reads from `source`, so the hook keeps eight parameters.
The macro arm of `e_call` moves to `e_call_macro`, out of line like
the other rarely taken arms, so the arguments of the hook stay out of
the frame of the recursive `visit_expr_in_out`.
Release build of main 179664e: 70 94 112 128 143 160 175 192 207 224 239 256. RSS grows by 16 MB for each load.
With this change: 56 65 65 64 65 64 65 64 65 64 65 64.
The same growth shows when the macro call is in the entry file of bun --hot and the file is saved again, and on one Bun.Transpiler that calls scan() in a loop.
CI. Build 132248 ran the new tests on every lane and they pass: Linux x64 and aarch64 (glibc and musl), the ASAN lane, Windows x64 and aarch64, and macOS x64 and aarch64.
Two jobs were red, and neither ran code that this PR changes:
Build 132291 (the same code, an empty commit): one macOS aarch64 job stopped before it ran a test. The runner's git clone of vendor/elysia timed out. The other 180 jobs of that build passed, on every platform. A retry of that one job is what the build needs.
Macro calls now receive the calling parse’s arena, and call-macro processing uses a dedicated helper. New tests measure memory growth across parsing paths and verify that macro-result strings remain intact until printing.

Macro-context calls and the runner receive the calling parse’s arena. The template-macro call also passes that arena. Related ownership comments are updated.
e_call_macro handles dead-code and disabled macros, macros from node_modules, invocation errors, and non-call results. e_call delegates to the helper under the stated conditions.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the e_call_macro hoist for behaviour drift: every *e = ... write earlier in e_call returns immediately, so the new function reads the same Expr the inline arm did, and the ECall-result fallthrough leaves e untouched exactly as before. I also traced the arena swap: the parser's own strings already live in p.arena, and the nested-transpile, parse-error and pending-import paths each keep that arena alive with the AST, so the macro result strings do not outlive their readers.
Extended reasoning...
The diff removes the long-lived bump arena from MacroContext and passes the calling parser's p.arena through MacroContext::call and __bun_macro_context_call (replacing source_dir, which the _jsc side now derives from source), hoists the macro arm of e_call into e_call_macro, updates comments, and adds leak and integrity tests. It touches no auth, crypto or input-parsing surface. Three inline findings are posted, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records what else was examined.
