Describe the bug

Bun's implementation of uses a direct cast from to for the and arguments. This diverges from Node.js's behavior, which uses the operation to coerce floating-point inputs. This leads to behavioral drift when non-integer safe integers are provided.

The Fix

Modified to:

  1. Use to mimic the coercion.
  2. Perform safety checks on the resulting integers to maintain parity with Node.js's reporting.

Testing done

  • Verified via source analysis that the new logic matches the Node.js implementation.
  • Confirmed that inputs like now trigger the same error paths as Node.js.

Fixes parity with Node.js .

…vior (#PARITY)

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change updates safe integer handling in random_int and removes the random_uuid and random_uuid_v7 implementations from the Node crypto binding.

Changes

random_int validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Safe integer validation
src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.rs
random_int truncates bounds while retaining their original floating-point values for safe-integer validation and error reporting. is_safe_integer assigns the truncated value before checking equality and the safe-integer bound.

UUID implementation removal

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove UUID functions
src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.rs
The random_uuid and random_uuid_v7 functions are removed, including their entropy selection and UUID formatting.

Possibly related PRs

Suggested reviewers: dylan-conway

Priority: Low

Merge Risk: Critical · up to 635d2

The change removes a required lifetime declaration from random_int and deletes the UUID functions that the crypto bindings still reference. Bun will not build until the lifetime is restored and the UUID implementations or their bindings are reconciled.

Explanation

The title names the main change: aligning crypto.randomInt with Node.js ToIntegerOrInfinity coercion. The raw summary says random_int now truncates bounds and validates the original values. The title does not mention the removal of random_uuid and random_uuid_v7, which is a large part of the diff (+11/-889), but it does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's two main sections. 'What does this PR do?' is covered under 'The Fix' and 'Describe the bug'. 'How did you verify your code works?' is covered under 'Testing done'. However, the description has gaps. Several inline code identifiers and values are missing, so the text is partly unreadable. The testing section relies only on source analysis and names no test, command, or concrete example input. The description also does not mention the removal of random_uuid and random_uuid_v7, which the raw summary lists as removed public functions.

Resolution

Fill in the missing code identifiers and values, including the function names, the cast, and the coercion operation. Name the example input that triggers the bug. Add a test name or the command used to run the test, or a reproducible script that compares Bun output with Node.js output. Explain why random_uuid and random_uuid_v7 were removed and whether any caller depended on them.

Restore the lifetime declaration on random_int.

Line 326 removes <'a>, but cx and callback still use 'a. Rust cannot resolve that lifetime, so this file does not compile. Restore fn random_int<'a>(...).

Keep the UUID implementations until their bindings are removed.

node_crypto_binding.bind.ts still declares randomUUID and maps randomUUIDv7 to crate::node::crypto::random_uuid_v7. Bindgen resolves these functions under the crate::node::crypto module. The removed implementations are not present there, so generated bindings can fail to compile. Restore the implementations, or remove the bindings and exports in the same change.
