FileSystemRouter: read the route tree from disk on every scan - #46584
new Bun.FileSystemRouter({ dir }) lists what the resolver cached, not what is on disk. A page added after import or a router read the directory is missing, under bun --hot too.
For a tsconfig.json near dir that does not parse, the first new throws the resolver's BuildMessage, later ones return.
The constructor loads with Load::Cached (src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs:263): RouteLoader::load (src/router/lib.rs:540) walks the cached listing and shares the resolver's log. Each load leaks route names into DirnameStore: 4,200 constructions of 2,000 routes end in panic: unreachable: AllocError.
Fix
Routes::scan reads each directory from disk, never a resolver record, for new and reload(). A route table owns its strings.
reload() drops the resolver's record of each scanned directory. Under a watcher it resolves their watched files again: the hot reloader finds a saved module through it.
Verified: test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts (62 new tests, 49 fail on main). Self-reviewed: 80 concerns raised, 67 addressed (Notes).
Background
The resolver caches one listing per directory and never compares it with the disk.
Considered a cache drop in the constructor and a newer resolver generation: both list from resolver records.
Downsides
A repeat new reads the disk: 205 syscalls, 131 to 141 µs for 50 folders (main: 0, 22 µs). With import of every route: 615 (main 457).
Under a watcher, reload() leaves up to 43 KB of dropped records (main 428 KB).
new drops no resolver record: after a case-only rename, import of the new filePath fails or loads the old module until reload().
#46286 guards RouteLoader::load against a listing of another directory and stops the constructor from replacing dir. This PR deletes that loader. Both PRs join every dir in the constructor, with the same code: reload() names dir to the resolver, so it needs the resolver's spelling.
I applied the three tests of #46286 on this branch: they pass with no other source change. This PR does not carry them. reload() works when dir is reached through a symlink runs in the test process, and on main's src/ that reload() does not return, which stops the run of the whole file against main. When #46286 merges, I merge main into this branch and take this branch's loader.
History
#4522 was closed by #15091, which made reload() drop the resolver's cache before it loads. The second sample in the first comment on that issue (a new router in an fs.watch callback) was not changed, and it still prints the old routes on 1.4.2 and on main. docs/runtime/file-system-router.mdx:86 says that the router reads the directory contents on initialization. No other report of this exists.
Decisions for a maintainer
Where the route table comes from. The options other than the router's own walk:
A cache drop in the constructor, with main's loader. Each new then costs what a first new costs on main: 354 syscalls and 217 KB of resolver records that are never freed, for 50 folders.
The resolver's listings at a newer generation (the idea on bustDirCache on FileSystemRouter.reload & fix of dir_cache keys in windows #15091). Only the bundle thread advances it (src/bundler/BundleThread.rs:277), and it is a u16. A cached DirInfo and a cached "not found" are returned with no generation check (src/resolver/resolver.rs:4543). The tests a directory that the resolver looked for before it existed cover that case: main does not list the directory, from new or from the first reload(). After a file is renamed in case only, Bun.resolveSync on main still answers with the old spelling after two builds at a newer generation.
With both, route names still go to DirnameStore on each load, unless the routes own their strings as they do here.
With its own walk, new drops no resolver record. A drop would add the cost of this PR's reload() to every construction: under a watcher that is a resolve of each watched file of the tree, and the dropped records stay allocated (43 KB for 50 imported routes). The price of no drop: the resolver can be older than the route table. Checked cases, each after the resolver read the directory:
A file is added, a directory takes the place of a file (x/ to x.tsx), a file takes the place of a directory: a new router lists the new state and import of the filePath loads the new file.
A file is renamed in letter case only (about.tsx to About.tsx): a new router lists /About with About.tsx, and import of it fails with ENOENT reading ".../about.tsx". If the old name was imported before, import gives that module. On main new throws ENOENT opening route or lists the old name.
On a case-sensitive file system, Bar.tsx is added beside bar.tsx: a new router lists /Bar with Bar.tsx, and import of it loads bar.tsx. Main lists /bar and loads bar.tsx.
After reload() the route table, the resolver and import agree in each case.
The name of a route file. filePath is the real path of dir plus the names in the directories, and the target of a link. With --preserve-symlinks it keeps the name of a linked directory, as the resolver does. When dir is typed unlike the disk with no link (another letter case on macOS or Windows, a subst drive), the resolver keeps the typed name and filePath has the real one. An app that imports the file under both names then has two modules. On main the name depends on whether the router or the resolver read the file first.
After the scan, reload() calls Resolver::bust_dir_cache for each directory that the last scan or this scan read, under each of its names: below dir as the caller names it, below the real path of dir, and its own real path. It reads no resolver record. If the scan fails with a system error, it drops nothing.
On POSIX, when the process has a hot reloader (--hot or --watch), reload() then resolves again each watched file whose directory it dropped. The files come from the watchlist of the main thread's reloader, so a reload() in a Worker does the same. The reason: on a directory event the inotify and kqueue reloaders map a name to a module through the resolver's listing and the path that a resolve stored in it (src/jsc/hot_reloader.rs:1057). With inotify a save by a rename is such an event, so without this step the module does not reload after reload(). With kqueue the event of the file itself reloads it. Main has that fault on Linux for a module that is not a route: of the five tests a save by a rename reloads ..., the ones for a module that a route imports and for a module below a linked directory fail on main.
Bun.resolveSync after a change on disk and reload(), in one child process with the resolver primed (the test after reload(), the resolver reads again each directory that the scan read):

A scan does 4 syscalls per directory and 1 for dir, 4 more per route file that is a link and 2 more per directory that is a link. A repeat new on main does none, so the ratio is worst for trees with few routes per directory and for links. bench/snippets/filesystem-router.mjs has the three shapes.
Syscalls are counted with a ptrace counter per phase of one script (openat, getdents64, close, readlink and the stat calls). The first Bun.build on main reads each directory again or not, by a race with the bundle thread, so that row is a range of 6 runs. Allocator calls are gdb breakpoints on the mimalloc allocation entry points. Instructions are a gdb single-step through the match host function. Wall times are the range of 6 interleaved runs on a shared machine (5 for the rows of the second table). The row for linked files is from 3 runs of the bench snippet. The row for the loop of reload() plus resolve is from 1917b1a and an earlier state of this branch. strace, perf, valgrind and bloaty are not in this container. The PR adds no host function, no codegen entry and no startup work.
Other behavior that changes
The walk reads the names of a directory in their order without ASCII case. Of the names that are one name without case, it keeps the one that the file system returned last. The resolver's listing keeps that one too, so an import of the route loads the file that filePath names. One limit: a new router can name a file of such a pair that the resolver does not load, if the pair was completed after the resolver read the directory.
The first file of the walk defines a route. A second file for the same route (a.ts beside a.tsx) is Route "/a" is already defined for a new router, and is left out by reload(). On main the order is that of the cached listing. [Id].tsx beside [id].ts is now this error (main lists both).
Of several index files in dir, the first of the walk is the index route (index.js before index.tsx). Main takes the last one in the order of the cached listing.
Only a dir that is absent, is a file or is below a file is Unable to find directory (ENOENT, ENOTDIR). Every other error of the open is a system error with code, syscall and path, for new and reload(): EACCES, EMFILE, and also ELOOP for a link loop and ENAMETOOLONG for a name that is too long. So is a dir whose real path cannot be read, for example one that is longer than a path can be. Main throws Unable to find directory for all of these.
Below dir, a name that is gone or may not be read is left out (ENOENT, ENOTDIR, ELOOP, ENAMETOOLONG, ESTALE, EACCES, EPERM, EBUSY). Every other error ends the scan with the system error, and reload() keeps its routes. Main leaves out a directory for every error. One case that main skips: a link whose target fails with another error (for example ENODEV from a dead mount) ends the scan.
A route file that cannot be read is a route, and the import of it fails. On main new throws EACCES opening route.
A link to a FIFO is skipped with no open. Main does not return from the open.
A link back to a directory the walk is inside of is not followed. Main follows it until ELOOP: it returns 82 routes for two directories that link to each other, and does not return for three.
A tsconfig.json or package.json that does not parse no longer makes new throw, above dir, in it or below it. On main the resolver parses the file when it first reads the directory and writes the error to the router's log. The first new then throws BuildMessage: Expected "}" but found end of file (the gate is at src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs:131), and the next one returns the routes. A scan has its own log and asks the resolver nothing.
On POSIX a name with a backslash is listed as it is. Main throws ENOENT opening route or names another file. An import of such a filePath still fails in the resolver.
The directory and file name of a route, below dir, are shorter than a path can be (4,096 bytes on Linux).
One more live router costs more memory, because it owns its route strings: +1.4 KB for 50 routes, +7.2 KB for 500.
On Linux the target of a linked route file comes from one readlink of an O_PATH descriptor. macOS and FreeBSD have no such descriptor, so there it comes from libc realpath. On Windows it comes from an open for reading.

Router, ResolverLike, the walk of resolver listings in RouteLoader, bust_dir_cache_recursive, DirnameStore::append_lower_case with BSSStringList::append_lower_case, the resolver's Entry::dir, and src/router/error.rs. The router was the last caller of each.
bun_router::Error had Sys(SystemErrno) and Alloc. Routes::scan returns bun_sys::Result: it fails only when a system call fails, and the JS error needs the code, syscall and path of that call. SystemErrno has only the first.
src/router/Cargo.toml no longer names the six crates that the router stopped using (thiserror, bun_errno, bun_alloc, scopeguard, bun_resolver, bun_wyhash), and Cargo.lock loses the same six entries of bun_router.
Tests
62 new tests in test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts. 49 fail on a release build of main. The 13 others pin what main already does (for example the --hot reload of a route after reload()).
reload() while Bun.build() resolves the same directory now also asks the resolver from the main thread in each round. On a debug build it runs 10 rounds and not 40: the builds of 40 rounds alone take longer than the test may run.
4 new unit tests in src/router/lib.rs (the route table, the listing, the error classes, the directory names for reload()). bun_router joins the Miri lane: bun run rust:miri -p bun_router passes.
The new tests that only start a child process are concurrent. The others run in the test process and stay serial.
The five a save by a rename reloads ... cases run on Linux and macOS. They are off on Windows, where a rename over a file that exists can fail with EPERM.
The bun --hot cases assert the child's stderr with its stdout and exit code.
The fixture of the directory with a real path that is too long is a chain of 22 links with short targets. The file system of the Alpine lanes refuses a link target of 2,251 bytes with ENAMETOOLONG.
test/regression/issue/18242.test.ts and the long-path case of test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts pass. They are the other tests that make a router.
The open PRs that this PR makes unnecessary are not closed. A maintainer decides the direction first.
No test makes a system call fail below dir with an error that ends the scan. A unit test pins the classification. A test of the whole path needs a seccomp or preload fixture.
The Windows and macOS ways to read a link target (see the last item of "Other behavior that changes"). I cannot run either platform here. The lanes of both pass the link tests.
On Windows, a dir that is being deleted is an EBUSY error and not Unable to find directory.
No test has a drive root as dir. A unit test covers the join of a root with a path below it.
The name of a route file when dir is typed unlike the disk (decision 3).
Resolver::bust_dir_cache takes the key as the caller spells it. A canonical key inside the resolver is a resolver change.
A lister with no policy that bake can share: left for the change to bake.
A link at or above dir that was pointed elsewhere: the resolver keeps the old target, as on main (last row of the table).
The index file by the order of fileExtensions (the first self-review asked for it): one rule for every duplicate is simpler, and the second self-review asked for one rule.
new drops no resolver record (decision 2).
The walk has no cap for directories that link to each other's siblings. Each path through them with no repeat is a route: 7 directories that each link to the 6 others give 13,699 routes in 326 ms, and the count grows with the factorial. Main does not return for 3.
Other platforms
I cannot run Windows or macOS here. At ff46e20, before the merge of main, every CI lane passed, the Windows and macOS lanes included. bun run rust:check-all passes for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc, aarch64-apple-darwin, x86_64-unknown-freebsd, x86_64-linux-android and x86_64-unknown-linux-musl. The link tests use junctions, and a file link where the platform allows one, so that the Windows lanes run the link code.

`new Bun.FileSystemRouter()` listed what the resolver had cached for
`dir`. `Routes::scan` now reads each directory itself, for the
constructor and for `reload()`, and a route table owns its strings.
`reload()` drops the resolver's record of each directory that the last
scan or this scan read. Under a watcher it resolves the watched files
of those directories again, so that the hot reloader still finds the
module of a saved file.
The constructor joins every `dir`, as #46286 does.

The second router is also stale after import, require, Bun.resolveSync or Bun.build read the directory, and for a module-level router under bun --hot.
The first router throws for a tsconfig.json that does not parse, and the next ones return:
constfs=require("fs"),path=require("path"),os=require("os");constdir=fs.mkdtempSync(path.join(os.tmpdir(),"fsr-"));fs.writeFileSync(path.join(dir,"index.tsx"),"");fs.writeFileSync(path.join(dir,"tsconfig.json"),'{"compilerOptions": {');for(leti=0;i<2;i++){try{console.log(i,Object.keys(newBun.FileSystemRouter({ dir,style: "nextjs"}).routes).join(" "));}catch(e){console.log(i,e.constructor.name,e.message);}}// main: 0 BuildMessage Expected "}" but found end of file// 1 /// this PR: 0 /// 1 /
The same happens for a package.json, and for either file above or below the routes directory.

Walkthrough
The router now builds route tables from filesystem scans instead of resolver-backed loading. FileSystemRouter scans on construction and reload, updates resolver caches, and keeps existing matches tied to their original route table.
Routes stores owned route data and scans directories, filtering entries and handling symlinks, path limits, and duplicate routes. Router tests and a benchmark cover scanning and matching. The Miri configuration includes bun_router. Resolver and allocator lowercase-append APIs and the router error module are removed.
Runtime construction and reload src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs, src/jsc/hot_reloader.rs, test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts
FileSystemRouter scans the configured directory on construction and reload. Reload clears resolver directory-cache entries and, on Unix, re-resolves watched files. Matched routes retain the route table used to match them. Tests cover filesystem changes, reloads, resolver behavior, symlinks, and retained matches.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things and ruled them out: MatchedRoute.src now passes Routes::dir() (which ends in a separator) instead of the old real-path base_dir to get_public_path_with_asset_prefix, but that helper strips the prefix and then trims leading /, so the public path is unchanged; and import_watcher() reading the main VM's bun_watcher from a Worker is a read of a pointer installed once in install_bun_watcher before any script runs, with the watchlist itself copied under the watcher's mutex in watched_files.
Extended reasoning...
The change rewrites the bun_router crate (src/router/lib.rs, ~1,500 lines) around a raw-pointer SoA route table and an iterative on-disk directory walk through bun_sys, replaces the resolver-cache-based loader in src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs with Rc-shared route tables, and adds a watcher-backed re-resolve step to reload() on unix. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface, but it is a large unsafe-Rust rewrite with symlink-cycle handling and platform-gated branches, so a human review is still warranted alongside the three posted nits.
Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):
🟡 test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts — nit: the suite gains about twenty subprocess tests that all run serially, so the default lane pays their full wall time one after another. Every new Bun.spawn test (e.g. test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts:779, :813, :862, :922, :988, :1093, :1248, :1508, :2027, :2104, :2198, :2263, :2414, :2503, :2589) is a plain it(...), while test/CLAUDE.md:22 asks for test.concurrent/describe.concurrent when tests spawn processes. Fix: mark the independent subprocess tests concurrent (each uses its own tempDir), or state in the file why they must stay serial.
Why this was flagged
The diff adds roughly twenty tests that spawn a child bun (several with --hot and a watcher) at test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts:779, :813, :862, :922, :988, :1093, :1136, :1248, :1268, :1314, :1508, :2027, :2104, :2198, :2263, :2414, :2503, :2589. All are declared with it(...); a grep for test.concurrent or describe.concurrent in the file finds none. test/CLAUDE.md:22 says to prefer concurrent tests when multiple tests in one file spawn processes or write files. Each of these tests creates its own tempDir, so they do not share disk state, and a 30_000 ms per-process timeout is set on several. On the base branch the file had far fewer subprocess tests. The cost is CI wall time on debug and ASAN lanes, not a correctness failure.
Verification: nit. Triggering condition: every run of the file on the default test lane. test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts contains no concurrent, while the diff adds subprocess tests declared with plain it(...) (e.g. bun --hot spawn at line 1508). test/CLAUDE.md:22 asks for test.concurrent or describe.concurrent when tests spawn processes. Consequence is bounded to suite runtime, not product behavior: nit.
`TestCommand::exec` ends with `global_exit()`, which does not return, so
the end of the function never freed the list of test files. LeakSanitizer
reported the list on the ASAN lane of this branch. `exec` now drops it
before the exit.
Remove `Entry::dir` from the resolver: the router was its last caller.
Tests: the fixture of the directory with a long real path is a chain of
links with short targets, because a file system can refuse a long link
target. The tests that only start a child process are concurrent. The
lookups that must miss assert the error code.
About the serial subprocess tests: the new tests that only start a child process are concurrent as of ff46e20. These are the bun --hot cases, the fixtures for links, permissions and the descriptor limit, and the resolver checks after reload(). The other new tests run in the test process and are synchronous, so they stay serial. This PR does not change the subprocess tests that the file already had.
The two inline notes have an answer in their threads.
The resolver logs the parse error of a tsconfig.json or package.json
only when it first reads the directory of the file. On main the first
`new Bun.FileSystemRouter()` then throws the resolver's BuildMessage
and the next one returns the routes.
The test has one case for each place of the file: above `dir`, in `dir`
(tsconfig.json and package.json) and below `dir`. Each case compares the
first router, a second router and the first one after `reload()`.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked three things in the router rewrite and ruled them out: the dropped uppercase duplicate check in append_route (src/router/lib.rs:503) was unreachable, since two routes with the same case-sensitive name share a match_name that the first check already catches; static_list keys do not dangle when Route strings move, because StringHashMap::put_assume_capacity boxes the key; and the detach_lifetime_ref in FileSystemRouter::match is sound as written, since nothing enters JS between the match and the Rc::clone that the MatchedRoute keeps.

The change rewrites src/router/lib.rs (about 1,500 lines, with raw pointers into boxed routes and an explicit-stack symlink-following directory walk), replaces the resolver-backed loader in src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs with a from-disk scan plus a reload path that busts resolver dir caches and re-resolves watched files, and adds a watchlist accessor to src/jsc/hot_reloader.rs. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the sensitive area is memory safety of the route table and the symlink cycle handling. Given the size and the unsafe surface, a human look is still worthwhile; this note records only what was examined beyond the posted inline comment.
With kqueue the event of the file itself reloads a module that was saved
by a rename. The cases stay off on Windows, where a rename over a file
that exists can fail with EPERM.
Also correct a comment in `reload()`: the inotify and kqueue reloaders
read the resolver's record of a directory on a directory event.
After the rewrite `src/router/lib.rs` uses none of thiserror, bun_errno,
bun_alloc, scopeguard, bun_resolver and bun_wyhash. `Cargo.lock` loses
the same six entries of `bun_router`.
The `bun --hot` test helper pipes the child's stderr and returns it, so
that a failing case shows the child's error text in the assertion. A
child with another first line is killed and not waited for.
…of cases
The body of `a save by a rename reloads %s` appended its suffix to the
`server.js` string of the shared case. A second run of the body in the
same process, such as a retry, then wrote the suffix twice and could not
pass.

The file-link branch always replaces self.path with the link target, unlike the directory-link branch, which honors preserve_symlinks. Under --preserve-symlinks, a route through a file link may therefore expose the target path instead of the link-based module identity.
Importing the matched filePath can load a different module identity from importing the route file by its link path.
This can occur when: A supported route file is a symlink to another file and the resolver has preserve_symlinks enabled.

I reviewed the latest push (db185c2) and found no bugs; every inline thread I opened earlier is now addressed in code, including the shared cases fixture mutation. Because this replaces the router's route source and reaches into the resolver cache and the hot reloader, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
match() in src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs: the detached 'static borrow of the table is anchored by the Rc<Routes> the MatchedRoute holds, and reload() swaps the cell rather than mutating the old table, so the borrow stays valid.
Routes::scan / for_each_dir_name in src/router/lib.rs: the scanned NUL-separated buffer is parsed with split_at_nul and each name is rebuilt under both the typed and real root; no slice into a growable container is held across a push.
reload() under a watcher: watched_files copies paths under the watcher mutex before resolve_again touches the resolver on the calling VM, so a Worker calling reload() does not read the main watchlist unlocked.
Worth a maintainer's judgment: unless_skippable drops an EACCES/EPERM/EBUSY subtree with nothing written to the log, and the crate now returns bun_sys::Result instead of a bun_router::Error (the author has stated reasons for both).
Extended reasoning...
The change rewrites src/router/lib.rs (about 1,500 lines) so the FileSystemRouter scans the directory tree from disk via bun_sys::Dir on each construction and reload, replacing the resolver-cache-backed loader, DirnameStore interning and the crate's own error type; src/runtime/api/filesystem_router.rs stores an Rc and forges a 'static borrow in match(), and reload() busts resolver directory records and re-resolves watched files through the main VM's ImportWatcher. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface, but it does touch unsafe lifetime detachment, process-global resolver cache invalidation and the hot reloader, with a design deviation from the per-crate error convention. The latest commit addresses the last open nit from a prior run and the bug hunt ran dry with no findings, but the size, the unsafe code and the design decisions the author themselves lists for a maintainer make this unsuitable for a bot approval.
`Routes::scan` reported `Unable to find directory` for a `dir` whose
open failed with ELOOP or ENAMETOOLONG. Only ENOENT and ENOTDIR say that
no directory is there. Every other error of the open is now thrown with
its code, syscall and path.
Tests:
- The catch blocks around the resolver and around the descriptor loop
let only the expected error code pass.
- A new router's route for a file that was added after the resolver read
the directory is imported, for each way the resolver can read it.
- With --preserve-symlinks a linked route file has its target's name, as
the resolver names it.
About the CodeRabbit review of ac2a0af. Commit 3477adc has the changes.
Root open error (src/router/lib.rs): changed, with one difference from the suggestion. ELOOP, ENAMETOOLONG and every other error of the open are thrown as the system error. ENOTDIR stays with ENOENT: it says that dir is a file or is below a file, so no directory is at dir, and Unable to find directory is the exact statement. The test is split in two for this.
Catch blocks in the tests: the race fixture, the resolved helper, the resolve helper of the resolver fixture and the lookup that primes the resolver let only ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND pass. The descriptor loop lets only EMFILE pass.
Resolver records in the constructor: not changed. The answer is in the review thread.
A linked route file under --preserve-symlinks: not a defect. The resolver names a linked file by its target with and without the flag (src/resolver/resolver.rs:1902 has no check of preserve_symlinks, the one check at :6577 is for directories). On main and on this branch Bun.resolveSync of the link answers the target, and an import of filePath and an import of the link path give one module. A new test pins this: with --preserve-symlinks a linked route file has its target's name.

#46286 guards
RouteLoader::loadagainst a listing of another directory and stops the constructor from replacingdir. This PR deletes that loader. Both PRs join everydirin the constructor, with the same code:reload()namesdirto the resolver, so it needs the resolver's spelling.I applied the three tests of #46286 on this branch: they pass with no other source change. This PR does not carry them.
reload() works when dir is reached through a symlinkruns in the test process, and on main'ssrc/thatreload()does not return, which stops the run of the whole file against main. When #46286 merges, I merge main into this branch and take this branch's loader.History
#4522 was closed by #15091, which made
reload()drop the resolver's cache before it loads. The second sample in the first comment on that issue (a new router in anfs.watchcallback) was not changed, and it still prints the old routes on 1.4.2 and on main.docs/runtime/file-system-router.mdx:86says that the router reads the directory contents on initialization. No other report of this exists.Decisions for a maintainer
newthen costs what a firstnewcosts on main: 354 syscalls and 217 KB of resolver records that are never freed, for 50 folders.generation(the idea on bustDirCache on FileSystemRouter.reload & fix of dir_cache keys in windows #15091). Only the bundle thread advances it (src/bundler/BundleThread.rs:277), and it is au16. A cachedDirInfoand a cached "not found" are returned with no generation check (src/resolver/resolver.rs:4543). The testsa directory that the resolver looked for before it existedcover that case: main does not list the directory, fromnewor from the firstreload(). After a file is renamed in case only,Bun.resolveSyncon main still answers with the old spelling after two builds at a newer generation.DirnameStoreon each load, unless the routes own their strings as they do here.newdrops no resolver record. A drop would add the cost of this PR'sreload()to every construction: under a watcher that is a resolve of each watched file of the tree, and the dropped records stay allocated (43 KB for 50 imported routes). The price of no drop: the resolver can be older than the route table. Checked cases, each after the resolver read the directory:x/tox.tsx), a file takes the place of a directory: a new router lists the new state andimportof thefilePathloads the new file.about.tsxtoAbout.tsx): a new router lists/AboutwithAbout.tsx, andimportof it fails withENOENT reading ".../about.tsx". If the old name was imported before, importgives that module. On mainnewthrowsENOENT opening routeor lists the old name.Bar.tsxis added besidebar.tsx: a new router lists/BarwithBar.tsx, andimportof it loadsbar.tsx. Main lists/barand loadsbar.tsx.reload()the route table, the resolver andimportagree in each case.filePathis the real path ofdirplus the names in the directories, and the target of a link. With--preserve-symlinksit keeps the name of a linked directory, as the resolver does. Whendiris typed unlike the disk with no link (another letter case on macOS or Windows, asubstdrive), the resolver keeps the typed name andfilePathhas the real one. An app that imports the file under both names then has two modules. On main the name depends on whether the router or the resolver read the file first.FrameworkRouter::scanstill lists from resolver records and still does not return for two links back into the tree. It is not changed here. FileSystemRouter, bake: do not follow a directory link back to a directory the walk is inside #46489 has a fix for the links.Relation to open PRs
FileSystemRouterpart of these has nothing left to patch: FileSystemRouter: reload() reads each directory once, from the route loader #45617, FileSystemRouter: reload() re-readsdiras the caller wrote it #45584, FileSystemRouter: derive route names from the directory walk #41166, FileSystemRouter: take each route's path from Resolver::real_path_of, not from Entry.abs_path #44612, FileSystemRouter, bake: do not follow a directory link back to a directory the walk is inside #46489 (its bake half stays) and Do not fail on a warning: gate Bun.Transpiler, FileSystemRouter and Worker on LogJsc::errors_to_js #45063 (the log of a scan holds route errors only, and no warning). This PR carries the five tests of FileSystemRouter: reload() reads each directory once, from the route loader #45617 with one assertion changed: a new router opens each directory once, where that PR expects no open. What
reload()tells the resolverAfter the scan,
reload()callsResolver::bust_dir_cachefor each directory that the last scan or this scan read, under each of its names: belowdiras the caller names it, below the real path ofdir, and its own real path. It reads no resolver record. If the scan fails with a system error, it drops nothing. On POSIX, when the process has a hot reloader (
--hotor--watch),reload()then resolves again each watched file whose directory it dropped. The files come from the watchlist of the main thread's reloader, so areload()in a Worker does the same. The reason: on a directory event the inotify and kqueue reloaders map a name to a module through the resolver's listing and the path that a resolve stored in it (src/jsc/hot_reloader.rs:1057). With inotify a save by a rename is such an event, so without this step the module does not reload afterreload(). With kqueue the event of the file itself reloads it. Main has that fault on Linux for a module that is not a route: of the five testsa save by a rename reloads ..., the ones for a module that a route imports and for a module below a linked directory fail on main.Bun.resolveSyncafter a change on disk andreload(), in one child process with the resolver primed (the testafter reload(), the resolver reads again each directory that the scan read):dir, in a subdirectory, two levels downdirthrough a link, asked through the linkdirthat is through a link: link name / realdirname / real pathdirthat was pointed elsewhere after the resolver read through itMeasurements
