Add direct regression coverage for both fetch-wrapper branches.
next-auth.test.ts starts the fixture and checks its output and exit status, but it does not assert that registry URLs are rejected or that non-registry URLs delegate to the captured fetch. Add these branch-specific assertions to the existing test file through the fixture's test entry point.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Compare the normalized registry origin.
The raw prefix check does not block https://registry.npmjs.org without the trailing slash. Equivalent URL spellings can also bypass the check before fetch normalizes them. If the wrapped code supplies one of these forms, the request reaches the public registry and the startup wait can recur. Parse the URL and compare its normalized origin with https://registry.npmjs.org.

What does this PR do?
Stops
test/js/third_party/next-auth/next-auth.test.tsfrom depending on the public npm registry while its server starts.Root cause. The fixture starts
next({ dev: true }). Innext@15.3.6,HotReloaderWebpack.start()awaitsgetVersionInfo(), which awaitsfetch("https://registry.npmjs.org/-/package/next/dist-tags")with no timeout, only to report whether Next is out of date.app.prepare()does not settle until the registry answers. When that endpoint takes the request and never answers, the test printsstarting serverand times out at 90 s.Fix.
fixture/server.jsrejects requests tohttps://registry.npmjs.org/before it callsnext(). Next already catches that rejection (// ignore fetch errors) and reports staleness asunknown. The 7 added lines are the whole change. No cleaner switch exists in 15.3.6.
getVersionInfo()takes no argument and reads no env var or config option, andstart()awaits it unconditionally.NEXT_TELEMETRY_DISABLEDdoes not affect it.Evidence that this is what failed in CI (2026-10-22).
curlrequests with an 8 s limit:/-/package/next/dist-tagsreturned 0 bytes on 3 of 10, and/-/pinganswered all 10 in under 0.2 s.curl, Node 22 and Bun all got answers in about 0.1 s on the good tries, and bothcurland Bun hung on the bad ones, so it does not depend on the client. This was measured from one network, not from the CI hosts. How did you verify your code works?
This is a test-only change, so I used release binaries: canary
1.4.4-canary.1+963452075, 32 commits behind main. I did not run a debug build. There Next's webpack compile takes about 4 minutes, so the fixture's own 30 s timer fires with or without this change.Fixture, run the way the test runs it (
bun server.js), 45 s limit. A preload sent*/dist-tagseither to a local TCP server that accepts the connection and never answers ("hangs") or to a canned{ latest, canary }response ("healthy"), and logged everyfetchthat got past the fixture.request sent, 4.8 srequest sent, 3.7 srequest sent, 3.5 srequest sent, 3.6 sfetchhangsrequest sent, 3.4 slorequest sent, 3.5 srequest sent, 3.7 sAfter the change the
dist-tagsrequest never got past the fixture in any run. Thelo-only row passes before the change too, because the request fails at once. Only an endpoint that accepts the request and stays silent causes the hang. The test file itself (
bun test test/js/third_party/next-auth/next-auth.test.ts, including itsbun install) passed with the change on the canary in two runs, one of them with the endpoint healthy. I did not get a valid run of the whole test file with the endpoint hanging, neither before nor after the change. The before and after comparison for the hang is the fixture table above. Not in this PR
bun installstill uses the public registry. The test installs 379 packages from registry.npmjs.org, which CLAUDE.md says tests should not do. Moving it to the localTestRegistryis a bigger job.Next telemetry. The fixture also sends 6 requests to
https://telemetry.nextjs.org/api/v1/recordper run. They cannot cause this hang: nothing on the start path waits for them, each has a 5 sAbortSignal.timeout, and errors are swallowed (see the "every outboundfetchhangs" row). PassingNEXT_TELEMETRY_DISABLED: "1"from the test stops them; with it set, a run logged no outboundfetch.Other tests that start
next dev. Only these two undertest/, both onnext@16.1.6:test/integration/next-pages/test/dev-server.test.tstest/integration/next-pages/test/dev-server-ssr-100.test.tsI read the 16.1.6 source but did not run these. They run
next devwith no bundler flag. The Turbopack hot reloader there no longer makes the request at start: it makes it lazily and awaits it when an HMR client connects.dev-server-ssr-100never opens a browser.dev-serverdoes, through puppeteer, so its HMR handshake could still wait on the same endpoint. I did not check whether that can fail the test. They spawn thenextCLI instead of a fixture script, so these few lines do not carry over, and I left them alone.Open PRs.
