A CONNECT or Upgrade tunnel stops its reads when the buffer of its socket is full. It then never reads the EOF of its peer, so it never reached the idle state that releases the event loop, and the process stayed alive after server.close(). Node.js exits there: a handle that does not read and has nothing to send is not active. The tunnel now counts as idle from readStop(), and readStart() takes the event loop back. Bytes left to send hold the loop as before. Over TLS, a socket.end() behind bytes that TLS still holds now waits in the cell for the writable event. usockets sends such a FIN by itself with no writable event behind it, so a tunnel that stayed open behind its FIN was never reported idle. server.unref() stays in force when a tunnel stops being idle: the +3 arm of the connection filter does not take the loop ref back after it. NewServer::poll_ref is a JsCell, so that arm needs no `&mut` and no unsafe block.
socket.unref() and socket.ref() did nothing on the socket of a 'connect' or 'upgrade' listener. They are now a third input of the tunnel's idle state, like the ref state of a libuv handle: the reads of an unref'd tunnel do not hold the event loop, and ref() puts them back. Bytes left to send hold the loop in both states. An unref() that comes before the tunnel is kept for it. The tunnel starts in one place for both paths (the dispatch of the request, or the end of the body of an Upgrade request), and that place applies it.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the poll_ref change to JsCell<KeepAlive> in src/runtime/server/mod.rs (ref_/unref now take &self, so the removed &mut cast and its SAFETY comment in on_connection_filter have no surviving aliasing concern) and traced user_unrefed: it is set/cleared only by the JS server.unref()/server.ref() methods and read only at the +3 branch, so a tunnel leaving idle cannot re-ref a server the user unref'd.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the node:http tunnel idle accounting across uWS (HttpContext.h/HttpResponse.h), the C++ socket binding (JSNodeHTTPServerSocket), the TS server, and the Rust server keep-alive; it touches no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface. Three inline findings were posted, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the Rust-side refactor and flag wiring that were examined and found consistent.

Beyond the inline finding on the +4 arm, I also checked the new UNREFED_BY_USER plumbing and ruled out two things: a server.unref() made before listen() is replayed through net.Server's _unref once the handle exists, so the flag is not lost; and in the 3 | 4 arm note_tunnel_idle(false) runs before ref_(), so is_closed() is false there and the early return in ref_() cannot skip the re-ref. The updateTunnelIdle() guard change is behavior-preserving: isTunnel() covers upgraded and closed sockets, and a uWS-side queue-full pause (tunnelReadsQueuedFull) still does not count as idle.
Extended reasoning...
The push adds a ServerFlags::UNREFED_BY_USER bit set and cleared in server_body.rs's unref/ref handlers and consulted in on_connection_filter's 3 | 4 arm; the ruled-out items above concern that flag's placement and the guard refactor in JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp, none of which touch a security-sensitive surface.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked that the new sending_tunnel_ref cannot outlive its server: setNodeHttpTunnelSending(false) runs on both -2 paths (HttpContext.h onClose and HttpResponse::upgrade) before the -2 itself, it is a no-op unless a +5 was fired, and deinit_if_we_can only tears the server down once active_connection_count is zero, so every +5 has been balanced by then.
Extended reasoning...
Findings-present ruled-out note only. The ref balance of the new sending-tunnel KeepAlive across socket close, WebSocket adoption and server deinit was traced and holds; the TLS close()/-5 timing concerns are covered by the inline comments.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I checked that the new sending_tunnel_ref is balanced on every terminal path: +5 is set only on a filteredAccept socket, both close paths (HttpContext::onClose and HttpResponse::upgrade/close) force setNodeHttpTunnelSending(false) before the -2/-4 close event, and NewServer::deinit reaches the same onClose through App::destroy while the server box is still live, so no +5 can outlive its socket. The +3 arm now honors UNREFED_BY_USER, and the count - 1 decrement in note_tunnel_sending replaced the saturating form from the previous push.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the node:http tunnel keep-alive accounting across usockets (openssl.c writable gating), uWS (new +5/-5 filter event), the C++ socket binding (updateTunnelIdle on readStop/readStart/halfClose) and the Rust server (sending_tunnel_count, sending_tunnel_ref, UNREFED_BY_USER); it touches no auth, crypto-policy or input-parsing surface. The one surviving finding is a pre-existing Upgrade-with-body gap, so a human maintainer still decides whether it rides this PR; this note only records what else was examined.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: on an Upgrade request that carries a body, bytes a listener writes before the body completes neither hold the event loop nor get flushed, so behind server.unref() the process exits with them unsent and socket.end() after them never sends its FIN. updateTunnelIdle() at JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp:902 returns while isConnectRequest is still false (HTTP_NODE_TUNNEL_AFTER_BODY), so no +5 fires, and HttpContext.h:940 skips onSocketDrain for the same reason, so the writable event drops its interest with streamBuffer still full. Fix: treat a HTTP_NODE_TUNNEL_AFTER_BODY socket as a tunnel for drain and sending/idle accounting, so the rule "bytes left to send hold the loop" covers this sibling path too.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
An 'upgrade' listener for a request with Content-Length > 0 calls socket.write(data) larger than the kernel takes while the body is still arriving. jsFunctionNodeHTTPServerSocketWrite (JSNodeHTTPServerSocketPrototype.cpp:281) parks the rest in streamBuffer, then calls updateTunnelIdle(), which returns at JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp:902 because isTunnel() reads isConnectRequest and that is only set at HttpContext.h:672 when the body's fin is parsed; so setNodeHttpTunnelSending(true) never runs and sending_tunnel_ref (mod.rs:1633) is never taken. The writable event reaches HttpContext::onWritable, but :940 gates onSocketDrain on isConnectRequest, so JSNodeHTTPServerSocket::onDrain never flushes streamBuffer and loop.c:665 drops the writable interest. With server.unref() and nothing else holding the loop, the process exits with the bytes unsent; without unref, a later socket.end() returns at JSNodeHTTPServerSocketPrototype.cpp:317-320 waiting for a drain that never comes, so the FIN is never sent. The base branch behaves the same on this path.
Verification: pre-existing. An 'upgrade' listener for an Upgrade request that carries a body writes more than the kernel takes while the body is still arriving. updateTunnelIdle() returns at JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp:902, so no +5 fires. HttpContext::onWritable skips onSocketDrain at HttpContext.h:940, and loop.c:665-666 then drops writable polling. Behind server.unref() the process exits with the bytes unsent.

Stays as is, and the description lists it under "Not changed by this PR": the same output on 1.4.3, on a canary of main, on 5af7e9d and here, for http and https. Taking +5 alone there would be worse than today, because uWS does not flush that buffer until the body has ended: a body that never ends would hold the process for good. It needs the drain path changed first, so it is a fix of its own.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: over plain http a request body sent behind the FIN of req.socket.end() is still dropped when the finished response does not fit the kernel send buffer; the new SSL-only branch at HttpContext.h:899 lets https read it. For non-SSL, deferShutdownUntilResponseDrains (JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp:358-369) sees uWS bytes and sets HTTP_CONNECTION_CLOSE, so the gate at HttpContext.h:1017-1021 runs shutdown() then close() once drained. Fix: on the non-SSL twin, a half-close deferred behind buffered response bytes must end in a shutdown only (a half-close-after-drain state consumed by onWritable), as the small-response path and Node (allowHalfOpen) do; then unskip the http row at node-http-server-socket-end-drain.test.ts:187. [also at: test/js/node/http/node-http-server-socket-end-drain.test.ts:204 - nit, pre-existing: this test locks in https keeping a Connection: close connection open after req.socket.end() to read the body behind its FIN, which Node and Bun's own http twin do not do.]
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
A node:http (not https) handler calls res.end(body) with a body larger than the kernel takes in one send, then req.socket.end(), and the client sends a request body after it receives the server's FIN (the http row that test/js/node/http/node-http-server-socket-end-drain.test.ts:187 skips). jsFunctionNodeHTTPServerSocketEnd (JSNodeHTTPServerSocketPrototype.cpp:303) calls shutdownAfterResponseDrains; deferShutdownUntilResponseDrains at JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp:358-369 finds getBufferedAmount() > 0 and sets HTTP_CONNECTION_CLOSE instead of a half-close. When the buffer drains, HttpContext::onWritable reaches the gate at HttpContext.h:997-1023: shouldCloseConnection() is true, so it runs shutdown() and close() and the request body never reaches req ('close' without 'end'). Over https getBufferedAmount() is 0, halfClose() defers only the shutdown, and the new early return at HttpContext.h:899-905 keeps that gate from running, so the body is read. The base branch drops the body on http the same way; this PR fixes only the SSL twin.
Verification: JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp:358-369 sets HTTP_CONNECTION_CLOSE (line 364) when getBufferedAmount() != 0, so halfClose() is never reached. On the next writable event the gate at HttpContext.h:1017-1021 runs asyncSocket->shutdown(); asyncSocket->close(); and the body the client sends after seeing the FIN is never read. The new early return at HttpContext.h:899-905 is SSL-only.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Both points are right, and both stay as they are in this PR: I ran res.end(body) + req.socket.end() + a request body behind the FIN for http/https, with and without Connection: close, with 2 B / 64 KiB / 8 MiB responses behind a 4 KiB SO_SNDBUF, and this head gives the same result as 5af7e9dc in all 12 cases.
- Without
Connection: close, Node v22.22.0 reads the body in all six cases. Bun drops it over http at 64 KiB and 8 MiB, and over https at 8 MiB. A half-close that waits for the uWS buffer is a change to ordinary responses, not to tunnels, so it belongs in its own PR. - With
Connection: close, Node reads the body in none of the six cases. Bun reads it only over https at 64 KiB, where TLS alone holds the rest of the response. The test pins that case because it is the one place where the new writable event behind the FIN could change what an ordinary response does, not because it matches Node. If another push comes, the comment above the test will say so.

What does this PR do?
It makes a
node:httpCONNECT or Upgrade socket (a tunnel) hold the event loop by libuv's two rules:uv_read_stop()stops the handle, and a stopped handle does not keep the loop alive.uv__loop_alive()counts write requests apart from handles, andunref()is about handles. That fixes three bugs.
1. A process never exits after
server.close()while a tunnel has its reads stoppedA regression from #43557 (in 1.4.3, not in 1.4.2).
Reproduction.
test/js/node/http/node-http-connect-proxy-pipes-fixture.jsis the CONNECT proxy of the Node.js docs (net.connect()and twopipe()calls). Its upstream is slow and then goes away, its client gives up, and it callsserver.close()with noprocess.exit().{"clientSocketIsPaused":true}, exits 0{"clientSocketIsPaused":true,"proxy":"close"}, exits 0{"clientSocketIsPaused":true}, exits 0Cause. Since #43557 the server holds the event loop for its open connections, except for tunnels that are idle.
JSNodeHTTPServerSocket::updateTunnelIdle()reported a tunnel idle only after read EOF. A socket whose buffer is full stops its reads (readStop()), so it never reads the EOF and the tunnel held the loop for good.Fix, in
src/jsc/bindings/node/JSNodeHTTPServerSocket.cpp:updateTunnelIdle()counts stopped reads like read EOF, andreadStop()andreadStart()call it.2. Behind
server.unref()a process exits with the bytes of a tunnel unsentNever correct in Bun, so not a regression.
Reproduction.
server.unref(),server.close(), a tunnel whose reads stopped, then 8 MiB to send. The peer reads everything.{"sent":true,"peerReceived":8060928}{"sent":false,"peerReceived":65536}{"sent":true,"peerReceived":8388608}The same happens, and is fixed, with no

poll_ref), andserver.unref()drops it. On main only one event takes it back: a tunnel at read EOF that gets bytes to send after the listener is gone.Fix. Bytes left to send get a loop ref of their own.
+5when a tunnel has bytes left to send and-5when it has none any more (HttpResponse::setNodeHttpTunnelSending). The flag is on the socket, so uWS balances a+5in the same step as a close or a WebSocket adoption.NewServercounts those tunnels (sending_tunnel_count) and holdssending_tunnel_refwhile there is one.server.unref(),server.ref()and the listener have no say in it.-3,+3and-4(idle, not idle any more, closed idle) stay as on main.Taking
poll_reffor pending bytes instead is not enough. It is given back only when the tunnel becomes idle. A tunnel that reads again before its bytes have drained stays busy with no further event, and its reads then hold the loop of a server the user unref'd.server.unref()keeps what it does on main for reads. A tunnel that is not idle any more takespoll_refback once the listener is gone, but not behindserver.unref()(newServerFlags::UNREFED_BY_USER, cleared byserver.ref()). With bug 1 fixed, a tunnel that reads again is such a tunnel, and without the flag a process that exits on main would not exit.server.unref(), thenserver.close()server.close()3. Over TLS,

It reads up to the FIN and stays connected.end()of 64 KiBend()of 1 MiBserver.close()server.unref()andserver.close()Cause. TLS holds the FIN behind the ciphertext that the kernel did not take. packages/bun-usockets/src/crypto/openssl.c: the one writable event that sent a shutdown held behind the spill goes through. Only a half-close bysocket.end()ofnode:httpsgets there. Everyshutdown()in uWS itself first checkshasFullyDrained(), and aclose()behind the spill returns earlier.HttpContext::onWritable()gives that event to a tunnel and returns, before anything else in it runs. Its close gate would close aConnection: closeconnection there, and a request would lose the body that it reads behind the FIN ofreq.socket.end()(node:http: a request gets its body behind the FIN of socket.end() #44419).JSNodeHTTPServerSocket::halfClose()callsupdateTunnelIdle().socket.destroy()over TLS. TLS holds that close behind its bytes too, because it has reported them as written, for 10 s at most (US_SSL_CLOSE_AFTER_SPILL_TIMEOUT). The tunnel holds the loop until the close is done, like any bytes left to send. A server that is not unref'd waited for that close on main already. Behindserver.unref():'finish'ofsocket.end(data)at read EOF destroys the socket, and the bytes that TLS holds still arrive, as on main (256 KiB: all of them).'close'events of the socket and the server come, as in Node. Each gives the same result on 1.4.3, on main and here.

Once they are sent it does not keep it alive, although it reads again meanwhile. The peers send exactlygetDefaultHighWaterMark(false)bytes, so the reads stop when all of it is buffered, however it arrives.'connect'callback can run before the upstream's'connection'event. The fixture awaits the upstream's socket. Before that it threw there, and Bun gives an exception from a'connect'listener to the socket's'error'event (1.4.2 too, Node crashes), so the fixture never closed its upstream and hung.Generated by Claude Code
