Problem

  • Server code imports two HTML pages that share a stylesheet. bun build --target=bun names it alpha-HASH.css or bravo-HASH.css for the same sources: 20 and 4 of 24 builds.
  • Cause: process_resolve_queue adds a page to graph.entry_points when the scan finds it (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:7378). That order follows a hash map over paths and parse completion.
  • No user report. Repeated builds of one tree found it.

Fix

  • find_reachable_files takes those pages out of entry_points. It adds them again after its walk, in the order that the walk reaches their manifest modules.
  • Correct because the walk follows import records in source order. The scan still decides which files are pages.
  • Verified: test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts, 18 new tests, 14 fail on main. Other suites: Notes.
  • Self-reviewed: 8 concerns raised, 8 addressed.

Background

  • import page from "./page.html" in server code makes a manifest module (server graph) and a page (browser graph). The page is an entry point.
  • Entry points are numbered by position. A shared CSS chunk takes its [name] from the first page.
  • Weighed: a scan that does not add the pages. The barrel pass and the type check read entry_points during the scan.

Downsides

Notes

Repros (main is 9b4284f, release builds. The branch now has main 449877f merged in.)

Two importers, 24 builds in one folder:

mkdir one && cd one
for p in alpha bravo; do
  echo "<!DOCTYPE html><html><head><link rel=\"stylesheet\" href=\"./shared.css\"></head><body>$p</body></html>" > $p.html
done
echo 'body { margin: 0; }' > shared.css
printf 'import "./a.ts";\nimport "./b.ts";\n' > server.ts
printf 'import alpha from "./alpha.html";\nconsole.log(alpha.index);\n' > a.ts
printf 'import bravo from "./bravo.html";\nconsole.log(bravo.index);\n' > b.ts
for i in $(seq 1 24); do rm -rf out; bun build --target=bun ./server.ts --outdir out >/dev/null; ls out | grep css; done | sed 's/-.*//' | sort | uniq -c

One importer (server.ts is import alpha from "./alpha.html"; import bravo from "./bravo.html"), one build in each of 16 folders with the same files.

main this PR
two importers, 24 builds in one folder alpha 20, bravo 4 alpha 24
one importer, 16 folders alpha 7, bravo 9 alpha 16
--compile, two importers, one shared stylesheet, 16 builds 2 executables 1
--compile, one stylesheet per page, 16 builds 2 executables 2
four pages, two shared stylesheets, 24 builds: different output trees 4 1
the same with --splitting, --minify, --sourcemap=linked 2, 2 and 3 1 each
the same four pages, one build in each of 8 folders 3 1

An output tree is the list of the file names with the hash of each file. The counts on main change from run to run.

History

What changes for a build

  • The pages are entry points in the order that the server code imports them in: the order in which the walk from the user's entry points, over the import records in source order, comes to their manifest modules.
  • So the [name] of a CSS chunk that pages share can change, and the order of the pages in result.outputs, in metafile.outputs and in the list that bun build prints. With --splitting, the order of the modules inside a chunk that pages share follows the same order.
  • A file gets another name only when the chunk name template has [name] or [dir]. The default of the CLI has [name]. The default of Bun.build is chunk-[hash], and --compile uses that too: there only the bytes of the server bundle or of the executable change.
  • The pages come after every entry point of the user. On main a page that the scan found before an onResolve plugin answered for a later entry point was between the two (pages-come-after-an-entry-point-that-onResolve-answers-late).
  • A page that is also in the user's list stays where the list has it.
  • A page whose importer is not in the bundle is still built, as on main. It comes after the other pages, by display path. Example: import "pkg" and require("pkg") both take the main file of a package, and its module file imports a page. On main such a page names the shared stylesheet in 8 of 30 builds. Here it never does.
  • A page from the files option has no manifest module (bundler: resolve files imports through the shared steps (HTML import manifest, url assets) #38605 is open for that). It is still an entry point, and such pages are in the order of their display paths.

What does not change

  • Which files are pages. The scan records a page at the line where it adds it to entry_points, and find_reachable_files moves only those. A server-imported .html that an onLoad plugin returns as js, text or file is still an entry point. A path that browser code imported first, with another loader, is still not one (bundler: key modules by (path, loader) so one file under two import attributes is two modules #41834 is open for that collision).
  • The scan. The barrel pass and the roots of check: true read entry_points during or directly after the scan and see what they see on main.
  • The lookup of the page of each manifest module moves from process_html_import_files (link) to find_reachable_files. It runs under the same conditions. process_html_import_files no longer needs its raw pointer to the graph.

The ETag

The ETag of a page in the manifest does not cover the [name] of the chunks that the page links. When the shared stylesheet gets another name, the page has new bytes and the old ETag, and a server that serves the outdir answers If-None-Match with 304. On main this happens whenever the name flips. With this PR it can happen once, when a project takes the fix, and when the order of the page imports changes. The fix for the ETag is a separate change in final_chunk_hashes and was handed off.

Cost

  • size of the release binaries: text 107,318,912 B on main, 107,320,448 B with this PR. data and bss are the same.
  • Allocator calls on the bundle thread from the entry of find_reachable_files to the end of the build (gdb breakpoints on the mimalloc entry points, the same count in two runs each). 31 modules and no page: 566 allocations and 326 frees on both. The two importers above: 392 and 1,224 on main, 396 and 1,229 with this PR. The list of pages that the scan keeps is the fifth allocation.
  • The four allocations: a bit per file of the build, the position of each file in the walk (4 bytes per file), the page of each manifest module, and the sorted pages.

Self-review

Two rounds. The first said to cut this out of a larger branch. The second found that the draft chose the pages again after the scan and so dropped output that main writes (a page that a plugin loads with another loader, a page from files), and that a private entry_points field did not belong here. Both are gone: this diff only reorders. Not taken: a shared order helper in test/bundler/expectBundled.ts, because one test file uses it.

Walkthrough

The bundler now tracks server-imported HTML pages, orders them during reachable-file discovery, and uses their source indices to process HTML imports. Added tests cover output ordering and shared CSS naming across page-discovery and loading scenarios.

Changes

HTML page discovery and ordering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track server-imported pages
src/bundler/Graph.rs, src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs
Graph state records HTML page source indices. Server HTML module generation adds each generated source index to that state.
Discover and order pages
src/bundler/Graph.rs, src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs
Reachability traversal removes tracked pages from initial entry points, discovers pages from reachable files, orders them by reachable position and display path, then appends their entry points.
Process imports and validate outputs
src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs, test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts
HTML import processing uses server source indices directly. Tests cover discovery order, shared CSS naming, plugin resolution, loader behavior, and related entry-point scenarios.

Status

How I reproduced it, on main (9b4284f, release build), with the script in the Notes of the PR body:

  • Two files import one page each, and the pages link one stylesheet. 24 builds in one folder name the stylesheet alpha- 20 times and bravo- 4 times.
  • One file imports both pages. One build in each of 16 folders names it alpha- 7 times and bravo- 9 times.

With this PR both give alpha- every time (24 of 24, 16 of 16). test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts has 18 new tests. 14 of them fail on main.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked: the .expect() in Graph::server_imported_pages (src/bundler/Graph.rs:259) replaces the equivalent unwrap_or_else(panic!) the old linker code had and is only reached for pages the scan itself recorded, so it is not a new user-reachable panic; every consumer of html_imports.html_source_indices (LinkerContext, computeChunks, HTMLImportManifest) runs after find_reachable_files, so moving its population from link to the reachability walk does not leave a reader seeing an empty vec; the other entry_points.push site (server component boundaries, src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:4743) is the one the PR description explicitly leaves out.

Extended reasoning...

The change moves server-imported HTML pages out of graph.entry_points during the scan and re-appends them in import order after the reachability walk, and replaces unsafe raw-pointer access in process_html_import_files with the safe accessor. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Inline findings already signal human review; this note only records what else was examined and ruled out.

I reviewed the updated push and found no bugs; the findLast/defer() rewrite in the tests resolves the held-promise concern from my earlier pass. Because this changes which entry point names shared chunks (a user-visible output change) and reorders core bundler entry-point handling, a bundler maintainer's look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The deleted unsafe block in process_html_import_files against the new Graph::server_imported_pages: both look up path.text of each manifest module in the Browser map and panic on a miss, so the moved lookup is behavior-preserving; html_source_indices is now assigned exactly once, in find_reachable_files, before any link-phase reader (computeChunks, HTMLImportManifest).
  • Placement of the removal/re-append of pages: fail_if_no_entry_points, type_check and the barrel pass all run before find_reachable_files and still see the scan-time list; server-component boundaries are appended after pages, as on main.
  • pages is only pushed on the same !found_existing branch that pushes entry_points, so a page the user also listed, or that browser code reached first, keeps its existing handling.
Extended reasoning...

The change touches src/bundler/Graph.rs, LinkerContext.rs and bundle_v2.rs (~150 lines of Rust) plus ~360 lines of tests, replacing the scan-order insertion of server-imported HTML pages into entry_points with a post-walk sort by import order and moving the manifest-to-page lookup from link to find_reachable_files. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The second commit only changed the test helper (defer() instead of a held promise), which addresses the one nit from the prior review; the two remaining prior inline notes were pre-existing and non-blocking. Deferring rather than approving because the ordering rule is a design choice with a one-time user-visible rename of shared CSS chunks, which a bundler owner should sign off on.

A second branch worked on the same bug. It is not opened as a PR, because this PR covers the page order: robobun/fa954c11/closed-entry-point-list (4 commits on 9b4284f, src +417/-148). It derives the pages in find_reachable_files as this PR does, and also orders client components and plugin-answered entry points.

I built this PR (4fd0a68, release build) and ran the repro of that branch against it. server.ts imports one.html and two.html. The two page scripts import p.js and q.js in opposite orders, so the shared chunk shows which page is first.

main (9b4284f) this PR
bun build --splitting --target=bun in 10 sibling directories 2 output trees (9 and 1) 1
Two files import one page each, 60 builds in one directory 2 (47 and 13) 1
--compile of that shape, 12 builds 2 executables (9 and 3) 1

Parts of the branch that this PR does not have:

  • A --compile test, html-import/compile-pages-in-import-order in test/bundler/html-import-manifest.test.ts. It fails on main and passes on a build of this PR.
  • The order of client components in bun build --app (Graph::server_component_boundary_entry_points, test/bake/dev/production-entry-order.test.ts). Main gives 4 different dist trees in 40 builds of one directory. The branch gives 1.
  • User entry points that an onResolve plugin answers keep the order of the user's list (pending_entry_points in src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, three tests in test/bundler/bundler_plugin.test.ts). This overlaps with bundler: resume the shared resolve pass for imports that went to onResolve plugins #45408.

Do not take the ImportKind::HtmlManifest removal from the branch. #38621 has the same removal with the target line that the branch lacks.

The scan adds each HTML page that server code imports to the entry point
list when it finds the page. That order follows a hash map over absolute
paths and the order that parse tasks finish in, and the link step
numbers the entry points by position. A stylesheet that two pages share
takes its name from the first of them, so the same sources gave
alpha-HASH.css in one build and bravo-HASH.css in the next, or in
another directory.

find_reachable_files now takes those pages out of the list and adds them
again after its walk from the user's entry points, in the order that the
walk comes to their manifest modules. Which files are pages does not
change.
A file that the plugin holds now waits with defer(), which ends when the
scan has no other file left. A build that never finds the other page
then fails an assertion and does not hang.

I re-reviewed the rebased version (e5dd824 + 665645e) and found no bugs; the test helper now sequences the scan with defer() instead of a held promise, which settles the hang concern from my earlier inline note. Because this changes the user-visible page order (and so [name]-based chunk names and result.outputs order) for every --target=bun build that imports HTML from server code, a human maintainer should still sign off on the behavior change.

What was reviewed:

  • The expect in Graph::server_imported_pages: the only site that pushes to server_source_indices (generate_server_html_module) runs right after the resolve queue gains the page, and the one path that clears that queue (last_error in on_parse_task_complete) also logs an error, so all three non-dev entry points (generate_from_cli, generate_from_bake_production_cli, run_from_js_in_new_thread) bail on has_errors() before find_reachable_files; the barrel un-deferral path processes its queue unconditionally.
  • Nothing between remove_server_imported_pages_from_entry_points and the re-extend reads entry_points other than the visitor itself; additional_files_needed_outside_css is populated before removal, so pages still get their bit. type_check and the barrel pass run earlier and are unaffected.
  • html_source_indices consumers (process_html_import_files, compute_chunks, HTMLImportManifest) all run at link time, after find_reachable_files now fills it; compute_chunks still runs after process_html_import_files.
  • A page that is also a user entry point cannot be double-listed: enqueue_entry_item returns early when the browser map already has the path, and the scan only records a page on a fresh browser-map insert.
Extended reasoning...

The diff touches src/bundler/Graph.rs, LinkerContext.rs and bundle_v2.rs plus one test file, replacing scan-order entry-point placement of server-imported HTML pages with a post-walk sort by first reach position, and moving the manifest-to-page lookup from link time into find_reachable_files while deleting the raw-pointer block in process_html_import_files. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The automated hunt ran dry with no findings, the rebase addressed the one test nit from the prior run, and index/bitset sizing and the panic invariant check out against every caller. It is not approved outright because it is a deliberate user-visible change to output ordering and chunk naming in the bundler core, authored by a bot account, with no CODEOWNERS entry covering these files, so a maintainer should weigh the design (pages after all user entry points, one-time rename for existing deployments).
