Problem

  • Under --unhandled-rejections=strict or throw, an uncaughtException listener gets a wrapper for an fs error: code: "ERR_UNHANDLED_REJECTION", reason "[object Object]". Node gives it the error (code: "ENOENT").
  • Also wrapped: a fetch error, a failed import(), the AggregateError of Promise.any(), new DOMException(). Under strict with no listener, stderr never names the error.
  • Cause: Bun__promises__isErrorLike() (src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:1402) asks for an own stack. In Bun an error made with no script on the stack has none.

Fix

Background

Downsides

  • An Error whose stack was deleted is raised as itself. Node wraps it.
  • With source-map-support, the fatal report and console.error(error) in these modes lose mapped positions, as in the default mode. error.stack keeps them.
  • A raised DOMException, ResolveMessage or BuildMessage fails Error.isError(). The wrapper passed. Binary text: +256 B.
Notes

All numbers: Linux x64, release builds of main 91e7e3b with and without this change, Node v26.3.0. No issue reports this. It came out of work on the double print of --unhandled-rejections=throw. This PR adds no passing Node test: the vendored files pass before and after.

@dylan-conway, three questions

  1. May this land before Bun.ModuleGraph: uncaughtException and unhandledRejection replace onError, and a rejection a job passes on is the graph's #43927? The BunProcess.cpp hunk is yours, with two changes. The comment is one line. The emitter uses the text of the reason for any stack that is not a string, not only for undefined.
  2. The order. Your type test runs before the own-stack lookup, and I kept it. In JavaScriptCore that lookup formats the stack, so on main throw and strict call an Error.prepareStackTrace hook before the listener (Node: 0 calls), and they print an ordinary Error with fewer frames than the default mode. With the type test first, both stop. The cost is the source-map-support row below. With the lookup first and the type test second, nothing moves for an Error that has a stack, the listener results stay 7 of 8, and the early hook call stays. Which do you want?
  3. process: emit the two warnings of an unhandled rejection as Node does #45775 rewrites the same emitter line, and its test expects Node's wrapper for an Error whose stack was deleted. Your Bun.ModuleGraph: uncaughtException and unhandledRejection replace onError, and a rejection a job passes on is the graph's #43927 text says that such an Error "is no longer wrapped, where Node wraps it". The PR that lands second changes that test.

What throw and strict raise (the value that uncaughtExceptionMonitor, the capture callback and an uncaughtException listener get)

reason Node main PR
fs.promises.readFile(missing) the Error, ENOENT wrapper the Error, ENOENT
fetch("http://127.0.0.1:1/") the TypeError wrapper the TypeError
import("./missing.js") Error, ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND wrapper ResolveMessage, ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND
new DOMException() the DOMException wrapper the DOMException
Error made with Error.stackTraceLimit = 0 the Error wrapper the Error
Promise.any([rejected]) the AggregateError wrapper the AggregateError
Error after delete error.stack wrapper wrapper the Error
{ a: 1 } wrapper wrapper wrapper
  • Same as Node: 2 of 8 on main, 7 of 8 here, in throw and in strict.
  • 26 reason kinds in 9 promise shapes (234 cells, throw): the reason itself is raised in 93 cells on main and in 216 here. The other 18 are a plain object and a string, which Node wraps too.
  • strict with no listener: on main, stderr never names the reason for 8 of 8 kinds (only reason "[object Object]" and the warnings). Here 1 of 8, the plain object.
  • 14 edge cases (deleted or undefined stack, Proxy, Object.create(error), function, array): 12 equal Node on main, 8 here. The 5 that move away have a deleted stack. 1 moves toward Node.
  • The parent of a Worker: it gets ENOENT for the fs error and the DOMException as it is. For a failed import() it gets an Error with no code, and for Promise.any() an Error with an empty message. The Worker's error path makes those (worker errors: carry the parse error's location to the parent; let parse/resolve diagnostics cross structured clone #38324).

The print-once change is in #46199

This branch first also changed the two arms of unhandled_rejection_owned. The self-review found two regressions in that half, so it is gone from this PR:

  • strict: with a listener that logs and calls process.exit(1), and a pending immediate that calls process.exit(0), Node and main exit with 1. With the arm stopped after the report the process went on and exited with 0. The report does not end a run in Bun.
  • throw: a reason that is an object and not an error (a Response, a class instance) lost its only print. The wrapper says [object Object] for all of them.

#46199 has the Throw arm with wrapped == reason. With this PR that holds for every error object, so an fs error is printed one time there. Until #46199 lands, throw with no listener prints such an error two times, as main prints every Error.

The report of an ordinary Error, and source-map-support

  • Error.prepareStackTrace calls before the uncaughtException listener: 1 on main, 0 here, 0 in Node.
  • 8 error shapes, 4 hooks, 2 modes, with and without a listener that calls console.error(error) (128 cells). 112 reports move: 28 toward Node (no hook: more frames, async marks), 28 away (a hook that returns V8 format text), 56 neither.
  • source-map-support 0.5.21 on a minified bundle with a map, throw and strict. Fatal report and console.error(error) in a listener: Node app.ts:2:13, main app.ts:2:3, here out/app.js:1:20. error.stack in the listener: mapped in all three. In the default mode main already prints out/app.js:1:20: the error printer takes frames from the engine and does not read stack. That printer owns the gap.
  • The new test pins what Node does too: 0 hook calls before the listener, and error.stack has the text of the hook. It does not pin the printed report.

Warnings (warn, warn-with-error-code, strict after a handled exception)

  • Warnings for one rejection (error.stack = undefined, error.stack = 42, a stack getter that throws, fs error, DOMException, failed import()): Node 2 for each. main 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2. Here 2 for each.
  • The first warning still says [object Object] for an error with no own stack. Only the failed import() is named now. process: emit the two warnings of an unhandled rejection as Node does #45775 changes that text.
  • A stack accessor on a prototype of the reason (Error.prototype, Object.prototype, a subclass) now runs one time for an error with no own stack (14 of 15 measured cells, Node and main 0). If it does not return a string, the first warning has the text of the reason, so no cell loses a warning.

Cost

  • unhandled_rejection_as_uncaught_error: 970 to 1142 B. Bun__promises__emitUnhandledRejectionWarning: 1360 to 1564 B (nm -S, the predicate is inlined into both). Text of bun: 107,402,467 to 107,402,723 B (size). The file size does not change. These sizes are from release builds of main 9bd124c without and with the head of this branch.
  • The two users of the predicate are entered 0 times in the default mode, with none, in bun test, and in throw with an unhandledRejection listener, before and after (breakpoint counts over 3 rejections).
  • Instructions in unhandled_rejection_as_uncaught_error for one rejection, inclusive (ptrace single-step, 3 runs): new Error 16,990 to 37, fs error 14,130 to 37, null 10,736 to 10,735, { stack: "x" } 1,551 to 1,592. { a: 1 } varies between runs: 14,234 to 14,280 before, 14,193 to 17,078 after.
  • Allocator calls in it: new Error 10 to 0, fs error 17 to 0, null 16 to 16.

Not changed

  • The default mode. It does not raise a rejection as an uncaught exception, and this PR is not a step toward that.
  • NODE_OPTIONS=--unhandled-rejections=strict does not set the mode (Read NODE_OPTIONS and apply the flags Bun implements #40328).
  • A plain object reason: the wrapper says [object Object] where Node says #<Object>.
  • The list of classes that are errors and not ErrorInstance now exists three times: here, in BunInjectedScriptHost.cpp and in NodeUtilTypesModule.cpp. The three inherits<> clauses go when those classes become ErrorInstance.

Self-review, what I did not take

  • "Land process: emit the two warnings of an unhandled rejection as Node does #45775 first": I cannot order another PR. Question 3 states the overlap.
  • "Pin the printed report under a hook": the test pins the hook calls and error.stack. The printed report is the printer's gap, and a test would freeze it.
  • Names of downstream projects that use these modes: I did not verify them, so the body has none.

Suites run on a debug build

test/js/node/process/process.test.js, test/js/node/promise/reject-tostring.test.ts, the strict case of test/js/bun/module-graph/module-graph.test.ts, and Node's test-promise-unhandled-*.js (9), test-promises-unhandled-*.js (3), test-promises-warning-on-unhandled-rejection.js, test-promise-handled-rejection-no-warning.js, test-process-warning.js. On release builds of main 91e7e3b without and with this change, the whole of process.test.js has 10 failures and 0 failures.

Walkthrough

Unhandled rejection handling now recognizes additional error-like values and handles missing or non-string stack values when creating warnings. Subprocess tests cover rejection behavior in throw, strict, and warn modes, including callbacks, workers, and stack formatting.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new short-circuit in Bun__promises__isErrorLike for exception-safety: isErrorInstance() and the three inherits<> checks are structural and cannot enter JS, they run before the only throwing call (objectPrototypeHasOwnProperty), and the set of classes matches what BunInjectedScriptHost.cpp already treats as error subtypes, so the predicate itself is sound. The Rust caller in VirtualMachine.rs still wraps the call in from_js_host_call_generic, so a throwing stack getter on a non-error object remains handled as before. A possible stray stderr diagnostic from the import("./does-not-parse.mjs") row of the matrix test (which asserts stderr: "") was also investigated and ruled out.

Extended reasoning...

The change touches the unhandled-rejection path in src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp (the error-like predicate and the warning emitter) plus ~265 lines of subprocess tests; it touches no security-sensitive surface. It is not approved because it is a deliberate Node-compat behavior change with a documented divergence (an Error whose stack was deleted is now raised as itself where Node wraps it) and a confirmed edge-case regression in warn mode, both of which warrant a maintainer's judgment.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp — Users on --unhandled-rejections=warn lose the first UnhandledPromiseRejectionWarning for every fs, fetch or DOMException rejection once any code defines a non-string stack getter on Error.prototype or Object.prototype. On the base, Bun__promises__isErrorLike returned false for these frameless errors and src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:1467 never ran, so the getter never mattered. Now the getter's value (a number, object, null) goes to Process::emitWarning at BunProcess.cpp:1484, which throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE at BunProcess.cpp:2282, and the throw is cleared at BunProcess.cpp:1485. Fix: when reasonStack is not a string after the get at BunProcess.cpp:1467, fall back to Bun__noSideEffectsToString (as Node's catch does), covering own-stack and prototype-stack values alike. [also at: src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:1474 - pre-existing: a user whose rejected error has a non-string stack (null, a number, an object) still gets only one of the two UnhandledPromiseRejectionWarning warnings under warn, warn-with-error-code and strict; Node emits both.]

    Why this was flagged

A process runs with --unhandled-rejections=warn or warn-with-error-code and some library has installed an accessor for stack on Error.prototype. A frameless error rejects: an fs/promises ENOENT, a failed fetch, a DOMException from an abort. Bun__promises__isErrorLike at src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:1411 now returns true for it. src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:1467 reads reason.stack, which runs the accessor; on the base the predicate returned false and this line was never reached for such objects. If the accessor returns a number or object, src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:1474 stores it and BunProcess.cpp:1484 passes it to Process::emitWarning, which rejects it at BunProcess.cpp:2282 with ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. CLEAR_IF_EXCEPTION at BunProcess.cpp:1485 swallows that and only the generic second warning is emitted; the user never sees the reason's text. Remedy: after the get at 1467, if reasonStack is not a string, reset it so the Bun__noSideEffectsToString fallback at 1477 runs.

Verification: src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:1411 now returns true for any isErrorInstance()/JSDOMException, so line 1467 walks the prototype chain, invoking the accessor. A number/null/object is passed at line 1484 to Process::emitWarning; line 1485 CLEAR_IF_EXCEPTION(scope) swallows it, so the first warning is never queued. On the base, line 1467 never ran for these frameless errors.

Status: ready for review.

How I reproduced it (Linux x64, a release build of main at 91e7e3b, and Node v26.3.0 for comparison):

// listener.cjs
process.on("uncaughtException", error => console.log(error.code));
require("node:fs/promises").readFile(__filename + ".missing");
command Node v26.3.0 main this PR
--unhandled-rejections=throw listener.cjs ENOENT ERR_UNHANDLED_REJECTION ENOENT
--unhandled-rejections=strict listener.cjs ENOENT, then 2 warnings ERR_UNHANDLED_REJECTION, then 2 warnings ENOENT, then 2 warnings

The new tests fail on main and pass with this change:

bun bd test test/js/node/process/process.test.js -t "unhandled-rejections|no stack of its own"

PR: #46236

The three review points are in the branch now.

  • A stack that is not a string (9ba3610). The warning emitter uses the text of the reason for any stack that is not a string. This covers an own stack and one that comes from a prototype. The warn test has three cases: undefined, a number, and an accessor on Error.prototype that an fs error reaches. It expects 6 warnings. main makes 4, and the first commit of this PR made 4.
  • The timeout of the Worker test (9ba3610). The test has no timeout of its own. It runs with it.serial, so the other spawned processes of the file do not slow it.
  • The long comment in Bun__promises__isErrorLike (3fba788). It is one line.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline nit, I also checked: the new early return in Bun__promises__isErrorLike (src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp:1409) only runs non-throwing type checks on an already-validated JSObject ahead of the throwing hasOwnProperty call, and its Rust caller wrap_unhandled_rejection_error_for_uncaught_exception still routes the predicate through from_js_host_call_generic, so a hostile stack getter on a non-error object remains handled. The explicit 20_000 per-test timeout flagged on the earlier push has been replaced by it.serial with a stated reason. The deliberate divergence from Node for an Error whose stack was deleted, and the ordering question raised in the description, are design calls a maintainer should weigh.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds an isErrorInstance/JSDOMException/JSResolveMessage/JSBuildMessage early return to the error-like predicate in src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp and makes the warning emitter fall back to the reason's text when stack is not a string, plus ~274 lines of subprocess tests in test/js/node/process/process.test.js. No security-sensitive surface is touched. A human look is still worthwhile because the PR deliberately diverges from Node for a deleted-stack Error and the author poses open questions about landing order relative to #43927 and #45775.

…strict

With --unhandled-rejections=throw or strict, an unhandled rejection is
raised as an uncaught exception: the reason itself if
Bun__promises__isErrorLike() takes it for an error, else an
ERR_UNHANDLED_REJECTION wrapper. The check asked for a `stack` of the
reason's own, as Node does. In Bun an error made with no script on the
stack has none: an fs or fetch error, the AggregateError of
Promise.any(), a failed import(), a DOMException that script made. So an
'uncaughtException' listener, the capture callback and the parent of a
Worker got a wrapper that says "[object Object]".

isErrorLike() now takes every error object. The warning emitter uses the
text of the reason when its `stack` is undefined, so these errors keep
both warnings.

The isErrorLike() and emitter hunks and the first test are from #43927.

Co-authored-by: Dylan Conway <dylan.conway567@gmail.com>
The warning emitter passed a `stack` that is not a string to
process.emitWarning(), which takes only a string, so the first warning
was lost. This now also covers a `stack` accessor on a prototype, which
an error with no stack of its own reaches since the previous commit.

The Worker test runs serially and has no timeout of its own.

Two more review points, and a rebase.

  • stderr of the first test (98a9be1). The test pipes stderr and asserts that it is empty.
  • The first warning says [object Object] for an Error with a stack that is not a string. Not changed here. That text comes from Bun__noSideEffectsToString, and process: emit the two warnings of an unhandled rejection as Node does #45775 makes it Name: message for an Error. For these reasons main prints [object Object] too, or no first warning at all.
  • The branch is rebased on main. The one conflict was the include list of BunProcess.cpp.
