Problem

  • A computed -0 is refused where 0 is accepted. Bun.serve({ idleTimeout: -0 }) throws Bun.serve expects idleTimeout to be an integer. socket.write(buf, -0, 5) throws Expected byteOffset to be a integer for 'Socket.write'.
  • toBeArrayOfSize(-0) and toHaveBeenCalledTimes(-0) throw a usage error.
  • Each reader gates on JSValue::is_any_int() (src/jsc/JSValue.rs:247). That is JSC's Int52 test, false for -0.

Fix

  • Each reader decides by value. idleTimeout, the websocket limits and toBeArrayOfSize use is_integer(). The socket offsets and the two count matchers each get one reader.
  • Correct because the code behind each gate already reads -0 as 0. No accepted value starts to throw.
  • Verified: new tests in bun-serve-args, tcp-server, jest-extended, mock-fn fail on 1.4.2 and main. The matcher tests pass under Jest 30.5.2.
  • Self-reviewed: 13 concerns raised, 13 addressed. The socket keeps its reader: an is_integer() swap costs 7 instructions over main.

Background

Downsides

Notes

What changes, per gate. Main is ea6a2c7b7c. 22 values at 12 gate forms give 264 cells. 76 change: 39 from a throw to accepted, 37 from one error to a truer one, none from accepted to a throw.

Gate -0 What else changes
idleTimeout, websocket.idleTimeout (also server.reload()) accepted A whole number from 2^51 says "255 or less" / "960 or less", not "to be an integer". A whole number below -2^51 is accepted as 0, as -1 already is.
websocket.maxPayloadLength, websocket.backpressureLimit accepted A whole number from 2^51 is clamped to 4294967295, as serve.d.ts documents ("Larger values are clamped"). Below -2^51 it reads as 0, as -1 already does.
socket.write() / end() byteOffset, byteLength accepted A whole number beyond ±2^51 gets ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE with the received value, not ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. It is still refused.
toBeArrayOfSize passes for [] A whole size beyond ±2^51 is a mismatch, not a usage error, so .not passes.
toHaveBeenCalledTimes, toHaveReturnedTimes passes with 0 calls 2^32 to 2^53-1 is a mismatch, not a usage error, so .not passes. toHaveReturnedTimes(2 ** 31) prints the count that was passed (main prints 2147483647).

NaN, Infinity, fractions, strings, booleans, BigInt and objects are refused as before at every gate.

Reference. Jest 30.5.2 and jest-extended 7.0.0 on Node 26.3: toHaveBeenCalledTimes(-0), toHaveReturnedTimes(-0) and toBeArrayOfSize(-0) pass. The count matchers differ from Jest in 20 of 76 probed cells on main and in 0 here. toBeArrayOfSize differs from jest-extended in 30 of 38 on main and in 18 here. The 18 are sizes that are not integers: Bun throws a usage error and jest-extended reports a mismatch. This PR does not change them.

Measurements. Release builds (linux-x64, LTO) of main ea6a2c7b7c and of this branch. Instruction counts are gdb single steps from the entry of the function to its return, callees included, 3 calls, all 3 identical after the first.

  • socket.write(buf, 4, 0), int32 arguments: 501 -> 489. The same call with whole numbers that JSC stores as doubles: 551 -> 546. socket.write(""): 547 -> 543.
  • The two socket gates on the int32 path (objdump): byteOffset 9 -> 9 instructions, byteLength 11 -> 8. Out-of-line JSValue::to_int64 calls in each of the four write_or_end copies: 1 -> 0.
  • expect(fn).toHaveBeenCalledTimes(0): 659 -> 659. expect(fn).toHaveReturnedTimes(0): 773 -> 776. expect([]).toBeArrayOfSize(0): 284 -> 284.
  • .text: 81,695,461 -> 81,696,229 bytes (+768, size -A). The stripped bun file: 107,271,904 bytes in both.
  • .is_any_int() call sites: 20 -> 13. .is_uint32_as_any_int() call sites: 4 -> 2.
  • The other shape for the socket gates, a plain is_integer() in front of the existing to_int64(): 501 -> 508 for int32 arguments, 551 -> 559 for doubles, and +496 bytes. For a magnitude from 2^63 it reports a clamped value (Received 9223372036854775807). The reader here reports the value that was passed.

Other open pull requests.

Sites that this PR leaves.

The websocket hunk. When #36998 was closed, the comment on the maxPayloadLength gate was: "is_any_int() rejects it first ("to be an integer"). Harmless, left alone". #13918 listed that TypeError for maxPayloadLength: Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER. The three gates are the same three lines, so this PR moves all three or none. To leave them, revert WebSocketServerContext.rs and the three websocket.* rows of the test. { idleTimeout: -0, websocket: { idleTimeout: -0 } } then still throws.

Tests. The new tests fail on 1.4.2 (744846f84) and on a release build of main, and pass on debug and release builds of this branch. cargo clippy -p bun_runtime --no-deps is clean. cargo mordant was not run (not installed here). The socket test is in tcp-server.test.ts: socket.test.ts has one test that needs public DNS.

No GitHub issue exists for this. The finding is from a fuzz run.

…ts by value, so -0 is 0

These readers tested the argument with JSC's Int52 predicate
(`is_any_int()` / `is_uint32_as_any_int()`). It is false for -0 and for
whole numbers from 2^51, so a computed -0 was refused where 0 is
accepted.

- Bun.serve `idleTimeout` and the three `websocket` limits
  (`idleTimeout`, `maxPayloadLength`, `backpressureLimit`): test with
  `is_integer()`. Messages and limits are unchanged.
- `socket.write()` / `socket.end()` `byteOffset` and `byteLength`: one
  int32-first reader. A whole double is decoded inline. Only the throw
  is out of line, and the range error reports the received value.
- `toBeArrayOfSize`: test with `is_integer()`.
- `toHaveBeenCalledTimes` / `toHaveReturnedTimes`: one reader with Jest's
  rule (a safe integer that is not below 0). `toHaveReturnedTimes` now
  compares as i64, so the message shows the count that was passed.

Walkthrough

Integer validation changed for server options, socket byte offsets and lengths, and test matchers. Shared helpers now validate integral numeric values. Tests cover limits, invalid arguments, negative zero, safe integers, and matcher results.

Changes

Server Option Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate server options and verify accepted values
src/runtime/server/ServerConfig.rs, src/runtime/server/WebSocketServerContext.rs, test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-args.test.ts
Server and WebSocket options now use integer checks. Tests cover limits, invalid inputs, negative zero, and server reload behavior.

Socket Byte-Count Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate write and end byte counts
src/runtime/socket/socket_body.rs, test/js/bun/net/tcp-server.test.ts
Shared helpers validate byte offsets and lengths for write() and end(). Tests cover invalid values, integral doubles, returned byte counts, and received data.

Test Matcher Count Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate mock call and return counts
src/runtime/test_runner/expect.rs, src/runtime/test_runner/expect/toHaveBeenCalledTimes.rs, src/runtime/test_runner/expect/toHaveReturned.rs, test/js/bun/test/mock-fn.test.js
A shared helper validates expected call and return counts through MAX_SAFE_INTEGER. The matchers use the helper, and tests cover valid counts and usage errors.
Validate array-size matcher arguments
src/runtime/test_runner/expect/toBeArrayOfSize.rs, test/js/bun/test/jest-extended.test.js
The array-size matcher now uses an integer check. Tests cover negative zero and invalid or unrepresentable sizes.

Status: ready for review.

Reproduced on bun 1.4.2 (744846f84) and on a release build of main (ea6a2c7b7c). With a computed -0 (Math.round(-0.2)), each of these throws, and each accepts 0:

  • Bun.serve({ idleTimeout }) and the three websocket limits
  • socket.write(buf, byteOffset, byteLength) and socket.end()
  • expect([]).toBeArrayOfSize(), expect(fn).toHaveBeenCalledTimes(), expect(fn).toHaveReturnedTimes()

Verification:

  • bun bd test passes on test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-args.test.ts (79), test/js/bun/net/tcp-server.test.ts (11), test/js/bun/test/jest-extended.test.js (59) and test/js/bun/test/mock-fn.test.js (96).
  • The 8 new tests fail on 1.4.2 and on the release build of main.
  • The two matcher tests also pass under Jest 30.5.2 with jest-extended 7.0.0.

LGTM — the follow-up commit tightens the matcher tests to assert the mismatch text, and the guard changes are safe for the values they newly admit.

What was reviewed:

  • Downstream of the is_integer() swaps: to_int64() is a saturating as cast and to_u32() clamps, so huge/negative whole doubles reach the existing "255/960 or less" checks or the documented u32 clamp (serve.d.ts says "Larger values are clamped"); toBeArrayOfSize compares against a u32 length in i64, so they become mismatches rather than wrong matches.
  • byte_count_arg: the number as usize cast is bounded by the 0 <= n <= MAX_SAFE_INTEGER check, negative int32s fall through to the ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE path, and the pre-existing byte_offset > bytes.len() / byte_length > bytes.len() checks still bound the slice.
  • expected_count returns i64 and both counters in toHaveReturned.rs are widened; total_call_count stays i32 but is display-only.
  • No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files.
Extended reasoning...

The PR replaces is_any_int() with value-based integer checks at four Bun.serve option readers, one shared socket byteOffset/byteLength helper, and three test-runner matchers, with new exact-message tests for each. It touches no auth, crypto, or data-exposure surface; the only loosened inputs are whole doubles beyond 2^51, which land on existing saturating/clamping conversions and bounds checks that I traced in JSValue.rs and socket_body.rs. The one nit from the prior review (bare toThrow()) was addressed in commit fd1fc8d, no third-party objections are recorded, and the hunt ran dry, which together decided approve.

🟡 Minor · Reject negative WebSocket option values before conversion. · WebSocketServerContext.rs:302-345

src/runtime/server/WebSocketServerContext.rs:302-345
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject negative WebSocket option values before conversion.

The base code already accepted negative integer representations. This change also accepts negative integral numeric values because is_integer() accepts integral doubles. The conversions then map them to 0.

This violates the WebSocket declarations. It also causes different user-visible behavior: maxPayloadLength: -1 accepts only empty messages, backpressureLimit: -1 removes the limit, and idleTimeout: -1 disables the timeout and automatic pings.

Apply the same nonnegative check to all three existing integer guards. This preserves computed -0, which converts to 0.

On the review note about negative websocket values (WebSocketServerContext.rs:302-345): no change in this PR.

  • Main already accepts a negative integer for all three options and reads it as 0 (to_u32() for maxPayloadLength and backpressureLimit, to_int64().max(0) for idleTimeout). This PR keeps that rule. It only stops the gate from refusing -0 and whole numbers outside ±2^51.
  • A maintainer declined the stricter rule in the comment that ended Bun.serve: reject a WebSocket idleTimeout outside 0..960 instead of truncating it to 16 bits #40097: "throwing on -1 would make the two idleTimeouts disagree and break idleTimeout: -1 users for nothing."
  • A change that makes -1 throw would break callers that pass it today. That is a separate decision.
