Problem

  • Since 1.4.0 a node:http2 client answers each late DATA frame on a reset stream with RST_STREAM(STREAM_CLOSED). A node server ends the session after about 60 such responses. node and Bun 1.3.14 send nothing.
  • Late HEADERS open a stream that nothing closes. session.close() waits until the peer disconnects.
  • Cause: handle_headers and handle_data read "no streams entry" as a new stream or an error (src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs:1040, :1637). No user reported this.

Fix

  • no_entry classifies a stream id with no entry: live, closed, or idle (never opened). Handlers call it only after a miss.
  • A frame on a closed stream gets no reply, as in nghttp2 (RFC 9113 5.1). A dropped header block is still decoded and counted (Downsides).
  • Verified: test/js/node/http2/node-http2-client-close.test.ts (24 new tests, main fails 22), h2-closed-stream.test.ts (18 tests, main fails 14). Also test/js/node/http2/, node's test-http2-*.js, grpc-js.

Background

Downsides

  • Dropped header blocks use nghttp2's limit: 10,000, plus 330 per second. A burst or a steady rate above it ends the session (GOAWAY(ENHANCE_YOUR_CALM)), as in node.
  • RST_STREAM on a never-opened id ends the session in two more cases.
  • Size: +1,536 bytes of release .text, +40 bytes per session. Lookups per request: as main.
Notes

Who meets this. No issue reports it. It is a regression from 1.3.14 that the rewritten inbound engine (#31584) shipped in 1.4.0. A raw peer that sends 100 DATA frames after the client's RST_STREAM(CANCEL) gets, per release: 1.3.14 nothing, 1.4.0 and 1.4.3 100 RST_STREAM(STREAM_CLOSED), node v26.3.0 nothing. nghttp2 ends a session after 1,000 RST_STREAM frames, plus 33 per second. A client that cancels streaming responses (a gRPC server stream, for example) uses that up fast.

Frames on a closed stream. Raw peer on loopback. A closed stream is one that was reset or that finished.

frame node v26.3.0 main this PR
HEADERS on a request that the client reset or that finished nothing a stream that nothing closes nothing
DATA connection window only RST_STREAM(STREAM_CLOSED) per frame connection window only
empty DATA with no END_STREAM nothing RST_STREAM per frame, and a count toward maxSessionInvalidFrames nothing
WINDOW_UPDATE with a 0 increment, or past 2^31-1 nothing RST_STREAM per frame nothing
a second HEADERS, DATA or WINDOW_UPDATE 0 in the read that finished a client stream nothing GOAWAY(STREAM_CLOSED), or RST_STREAM nothing
HEADERS behind the client's RST_STREAM in one read (server) nothing RST_STREAM(STREAM_CLOSED) nothing
DATA or WINDOW_UPDATE 0 on a pushed stream that the server closed with close(NGHTTP2_CANCEL) nothing RST_STREAM per frame nothing
ALTSVC on a stream that is not open no 'altsvc' event 'altsvc' event no event

Frames on an id that was never opened (idle). nghttp2 makes each of these a connection error. This PR changes two of them and leaves the rest for a follow-up, so that the fix adds few new ways to end a session.

  • Client HEADERS on an idle id: decoded, dropped and counted. main opens a stream that nothing closes.
  • RST_STREAM on an idle id is a GOAWAY(PROTOCOL_ERROR) on main too. main took the highest id of either side as the mark. This PR takes the highest id that the stream's own side opened, as nghttp2 does. Two cases change: an even id that no PUSH_PROMISE reserved, below a request id. An odd id above every request, below a pushed id.
  • DATA and WINDOW_UPDATE on an idle id: as on main (RST_STREAM, or nothing). An empty DATA frame on an idle id still counts toward maxSessionInvalidFrames.

Measurements. Release builds of main b28212a and of this PR, node v26.3.0.

  • RST_STREAM frames per cancelled streaming response. Stock node server behind a 20 ms each-way relay, a 256-byte DATA frame every 2 ms, one GET every 10 ms, cancelled on the third 'data' event, 5 interleaved runs. node client 1.00. main 17.5 to 18.7. This PR 1.01 to 1.02.
  • Cancelled responses before that server ends the session. node client 1,465 in each run. main 56 to 60. This PR 1,446 to 1,489 in four runs, and 513 in one run that ended on a node server error (The user callback function failed), not on the reset limit. Each cancel is one RST_STREAM, so the server's limit ends all three in time.
  • Frames over 1,000 cancelled requests against a raw peer. Whole response late: 1,000 RST_STREAM(CANCEL) from node, main and this PR. Only the body late (2 DATA frames each): node 1,000 CANCEL. main 1,000 CANCEL and 2,000 STREAM_CLOSED. This PR 1,000 CANCEL.
  • Streams left behind. Default options, a request, close(NGHTTP2_CANCEL), then late HEADERS, 300 times per second: this PR and node accept 102,000 of 102,000. main refuses request() after 100,825. With maxSessionMemory: 1: this PR 20,000 of 20,000, main 10,083.
  • Limit for ignored header blocks. In one burst on one closed stream, 10,000 are dropped and block 10,001 ends the session. The limit gets 330 back per second, so a steady rate r above 330 per second ends the session after about 10,000 / (r - 330) seconds. A cancelled request takes one token for each HEADERS frame that was in flight.
  • Empty DATA on a closed stream. 50,000 empty DATA frames with no END_STREAM on a finished stream of http2.createServer(): node and this PR send nothing and serve the next request. main sends 1,002 RST_STREAM(STREAM_CLOSED) and ends the session with ERR_HTTP2_TOO_MANY_INVALID_FRAMES.
  • Size. .text 81,124,805 to 81,126,341 bytes (+1,536). The stripped binary grows by one page (4,096 bytes). size_of::<Connection>() 448 to 488 bytes.
  • Map lookups per live request (gdb breakpoint counts on debug builds, the same at 5 and at 15 requests). Client GET answered with HEADERS and 4 DATA frames: 15 engine-map and 20 embedder-map lookups on both. One is_local_stream call replaces one on_stream_open call. Client 40 KB upload: 12 and 16 on both. Client push: 18 and 20 on both. Server request: the same counts on both, and no is_local_stream call.
  • User instructions of the whole client process per GET (perf_event_open, 2,000 against 6,000 requests, 5 interleaved runs): main 156,000, this PR 157,000. The runs of one build differ by about 12,000 per request, so the delta is below the spread.

Differences from node that remain.

Other open PRs on this code.

PR relation
#42467 Replaced and closed. Its rule for DATA and WINDOW_UPDATE and its 6 tests are here.
#43534 Its handle_headers guard is replaced by this rule. Its pushed stream change stays, stacked on this PR.
#42522 Defines the same limiter (glitch_limit, note_glitch) for PRIORITY, unknown frames, ALTSVC and ORIGIN. Whichever lands second keeps one copy and adds its call sites.
#31359 States the closed stream rule for the old parser. This PR is the inbound half on the current engine. The rest of #31359 is not here.
#42391 One arm is here: ALTSVC on a stream that is not open is ignored.
#37985, #37563, #37553, #43585 Not taken. Each can use no_entry and last_peer_stream_id in place of its own mark.
#42369 Still possible after this. It removes one native to JavaScript call per request.
#43465, #43475, #43612, #44337, #37588 Touch the same handlers and need a rebase.

Tests that pass on main by design. Six guards for the other side of the rule: a second response on a request that still uploads ends the session (2 cases), a WINDOW_UPDATE before any response frame is applied, RST_STREAM on an open pushed stream closes it, empty DATA on an id that was never opened still ends the session, and a header block that does not decode is a COMPRESSION_ERROR.

Test files. The cases that node passes too are in node-http2-client-close.test.ts, which runs itself under node as its last test. The wire cases for both roles are in the new h2-closed-stream.test.ts. h2-conformance.test.ts is not in this PR. Its comment above lateData still describes main's reply to late DATA.

Engine unit tests. connection.rs gets 3. CI does not run the tests of that module, the ones already there included. I ran them with the engine sources in a standalone crate.

Suites run on the debug (ASAN) build. test/js/node/http2/ (652 pass, 6 time out at 5 s: the "ArrayBuffer being detached" subprocess cases, which pass alone, 9 of 9). 256 test/js/node/test/parallel/test-http2-*.js, 5 sequential/test-http2-*.js, 18 test-diagnostics-channel-http2-*.js. test/js/third_party/grpc-js/ (317 pass, 11 fail. main: 315 pass, 13 fail, the same 11 and two more. They need DNS or the tonic server, or hit the 5 s timeout).

Self-review. 44 concerns raised, 42 addressed. Not taken: the duplicate RST_STREAM on the send path (it is #43539) and the last stream id in a client's GOAWAY (it is #37588).

no test proof · iteration 2 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/node/http2/node-http2-client-close.test.ts, test/js/node/http2/h2-closed-stream.test.ts

The inbound engine read "no entry in `streams`" as a new stream for
HEADERS and as an error for DATA and WINDOW_UPDATE. A client that reset a
request answered each late DATA frame with RST_STREAM(STREAM_CLOSED), and
late HEADERS opened a stream that nothing closed.

`no_entry` now says what a stream id with no entry is: live (this side
opened it), closed, or idle (never opened). A frame on a closed stream
gets no reply. A dropped header block is still decoded and counts
against nghttp2's limit for ignored frames (10,000, plus 330 per second).

A server still opens a stream for HEADERS on any id with no entry.

Status: open. CI is green at a366387 (Buildkite build 127852, all 181 jobs passed). The PR waits for a maintainer review.

How I reproduced it. http2.connect() against a raw HTTP/2 peer on loopback:

  1. The client sends a GET. The peer answers with HEADERS and one DATA frame.
  2. The client calls req.close(NGHTTP2_CANCEL) on the first 'data' event.
  3. The peer gets the RST_STREAM and sends 100 more DATA frames on that stream.

Bun 1.4.0, 1.4.3 and main answer with 100 RST_STREAM(STREAM_CLOSED) frames. Bun 1.3.14 and node v26.3.0 send nothing. When step 3 sends the response HEADERS instead, session.close() does not complete on main until the peer disconnects.

The tests are in test/js/node/http2/node-http2-client-close.test.ts ("frames on a stream that the client closed get no reply") and test/js/node/http2/h2-closed-stream.test.ts.

Walkthrough

The HTTP/2 connection now distinguishes live, closed, and idle streams when handling frames. It ignores late frames on closed streams and decodes ignored header blocks for HPACK synchronization. The client session start handler no longer creates pushed streams.

Changes

HTTP/2 stream lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stream ID tracking
src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs, src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs
The connection and frame parser track stream-ID high-water marks. The connection classifies missing stream entries as live, closed, or idle.
Frame classification and handling
src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs
Frame handling uses stream state to ignore closed-stream traffic, reject resets on idle streams, and apply the ignored-header glitch limit. DATA admission, WINDOW_UPDATE, and ALTSVC handling also use stream state.
Stream lifecycle validation
src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs, test/js/node/http2/h2-conformance.test.ts, test/js/node/http2/node-http2-client-close.test.ts
Tests cover late and invalid frames, HPACK synchronization, flow control, session usability, and stream cleanup. The relay test checks late DATA against a Node.js server.

Client push stream registration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pushed stream creation
src/js/node/http2.ts
The client session start handler only increments the connection count. The existing push handler creates pushed streams.

Late frames on closed HTTP/2 streams are now dropped silently, which fixes the reply-flood regression. However, a peer can send empty DATA frames on closed streams indefinitely without reaching any session limit, which leaves an unbounded resource-consumption path. Charge these frames to the existing glitch limiter before merging.

The old line said that a frame on an idle stream is a connection error.
Only RST_STREAM is one in this change.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the raw *mut Stream read added to Sink::is_local_stream in src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs — it follows the same map-entry lifetime pattern as the sibling accessors in that file (is_stream_reading, the window-update path), so the SAFETY claim holds; the GLITCH_BURST/GLITCH_RATE constants were examined against nghttp2's defaults and match; and the empty-DATA invalid-frame count for closed (not idle) streams was examined and found consistent with nghttp2 dropping closed-stream frames before any counting.

Extended reasoning...

The change rewrites how the HTTP/2 engine in src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs classifies inbound frames on streams with no table entry (Live/Closed/Idle), replaces RST_STREAM(STREAM_CLOSED) replies with silent drops plus an nghttp2-style glitch rate limiter, and adjusts the embedder's is_local_stream and stream-id high-water tracking in h2_frame_parser.rs. It touches a network-facing protocol state machine with adversarial peer input, and five verified findings are posted inline, so a human review is needed regardless.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

The count of empty DATA frames with no END_STREAM is back before the
stream lookup, as on main. Only a closed stream is exempt. An id that
nothing opened counts again, so a flood of such frames still ends the
session after maxSessionInvalidFrames.

Tests:
- The client cases compare what the client sends after the late frames.
The client can write its own reset twice before the stream emits
'close', and that frame is not a reply.
- The node server prints its port as a string. console.log colors a
number when FORCE_COLOR is set, which node --test sets for its files.
- The port read rejects when the server exits first.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

One part of this review's analysis that stopped early was run once more. It finished.

The cases are the same. They get a file of their own with one small raw
connection helper for both roles, and h2-conformance.test.ts is as on
main again. The assertion on the loop counter in "a late response
leaves no stream behind" is gone: it could not fail.
