…bundler and the REPL A body of `if`, `else`, `while` or `do` without braces opens no scope, so `maybe_relocate_vars_to_top_level` took a module-level `var` in it for a top-level statement and left it in place. The linker's `__esm` wrapper and the REPL transform move only top-level declarations out of their closure, so the `var` stayed inside: `ReferenceError: root is not defined` in a bundle, and a lost variable in `bun repl`. For those two readers (a bundle that is not for the dev server, and the REPL): - such a `var` becomes an assignment and the top level declares the name (port of evanw/esbuild#4348); - a TypeScript enum in such a body declares its name at the top level; - the head of `for (var i; ...)` without initializer is cleared, as in esbuild. A file that has a top-level `function f` and `var f` keeps its brace-less bodies as they are: a bundle is module code, which rejects that pair. Transpile-only output and dev server output do not change.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked a few adjacent paths and they hold up: the new for (var i; ...) head-clearing in src/js_parser/visit/visit_stmt.rs only fires after a successful relocation, and a for head always sits in a pushed block scope, so the name is already in relocated_top_level_vars and dropping the var keeps exactly one declaration; labelled and with bodies push their own scope, so the new gate in src/js_parser/fold.rs does not change them; and lifts_top_level_decls() is false for plain bun run and for HMR/dev-server bundles, so neither the gate nor the for head change reaches those outputs.
Extended reasoning...
The change is a ~30-line parser edit (one gate in fold.rs, two predicates and an enum-lowering branch in p.rs, a for-head tweak in visit_stmt.rs) plus ~450 lines of bundler/REPL tests; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The inline findings include an acknowledged ordering regression for if (c) var x = 1; var x = 2; in lazily loaded bundled modules, which is a design trade-off a human should weigh, so this is not an approve.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

src/js_parser/visit/visit_stmt.rs— Users ofBun.build({ reactFastRefresh: true })orbun build --react-fast-refreshlose the$RefreshReg$registration for a component declared by a brace-lessif (c) var Comp = () => <x/>; main registered it. src/js_parser/visit/visit_stmt.rs:1204 now relocates that var in a non-HMR bundle and returns at visit_stmt.rs:1210 before the register loop at visit_stmt.rs:1218 runs. Fix: run the fast-refresh registration (or emit it for the relocated name) when relocation succeeds at module scope, so every relocated top-level component, brace-less or braced, is still registered.Why this was flagged
A JSX file with
if (cond) var Comp = () => <div/>;at module level, bundled with react_fast_refresh on and hot_module_reloading off (src/runtime/api/JSBundler.rs:707reactFastRefresh, src/runtime/cli/Arguments.rs:2711--react-fast-refresh, applied per file at src/bundler/ParseTask.rs:2556). On main, src/js_parser/fold.rs:60 returned ok:false for that var because current_scope == module_scope, so s_local fell through to visit_stmt.rs:1218 and called handle_react_refresh_register for Comp. Now relocates_single_stmt_body_decls (src/js_parser/p.rs:8044) is true in that mode, the var becomes an assignment and s_local returns at visit_stmt.rs:1210, skipping the registration. The user's fast-refresh runtime never sees Comp, so edits to it fall back to a full reload instead of a hot update. The dismissal weighed only rarity; the mechanism is a verified behavioral regression against base for every file hitting this shape, and the braced form skipping registration on main is a sibling defect, not a defense.Verification: Triggered when a JSX file bundled with
bun build --react-fast-refreshdeclares a brace-lessif (c) var Comp = () => <div/>;at module level.src/js_parser/visit/visit_stmt.rs:1205-1210pushes the assignment andreturn Ok(()), so the register loop atvisit_stmt.rs:1218never runs. On basefold.rs:60returnedok:false, soCompwas registered. Not covered by any test added in the PR. -

src/js_parser/visit/visit_stmt.rs— Bundles built with--minify-syntax(or a define that makes aniftest constant) now keep a dead store and an__esmwrapper forif (true) var d = 1;that main tree-shook away; the PR's own measurement is 138 B to 356 B per such module. src/js_parser/visit/visit_stmt.rs:1204 turns the brace-less var intod = 1before s_if folds the branch at visit_stmt.rs:1811, so the assignment is a side effect the linker cannot drop or lift. Fix: when the enclosing if test is a known constant, fold first (or relocate the declaration with its initializer as a top-levelvar d = 1) so unused brace-less vars stay removable in every constant-branch form, if, else, while and do.Why this was flagged
Library code such as
if (process.env.NODE_ENV !== "production") var warn = makeWarn();with--define process.env.NODE_ENV=developmentand--minify-syntax, or anyif (true) var x = v;, bundled without HMR. s_local at visit_stmt.rs:1204 runs before s_if sees the constant test, so with relocates_single_stmt_body_decls true (src/js_parser/p.rs:8044) the statement becomes the SExprx = vplus a top-levelvar x;from append_part at src/js_parser/p.rs:5551. append_if_body_preserving_scope at visit_stmt.rs:1811 then emits the bare assignment at top level. On main the same input becamevar x = vat top level, which the linker could lift out of the wrapper or drop as unused. Now the store is not a declaration, so an unusedxis kept and a lazily loaded module needs an__esmwrapper it did not need before (PR measurement 138 B to 356 B). This hits every production-mode bundle that relies on NODE_ENV folding of brace-less var guards, a common pattern in older React-ecosystem packages; the dismissal called it size-only but the wrapper also changes evaluation timing for the module.Verification: Acknowledged in diff: the PR description records 138 B on main, 356 B here. Trigger: a non-HMR bundle with
minifySyntaxwhere a lazily-loaded module has a brace-lessif (true) var d = 1;. visit_stmt.rs:1754 visits the body before the fold at :1789-1811, so :1203-1210 turnsvar d = 1intod = 1, which generateCodeForFileInChunkJS.rs:829 keeps ininner_stmts, emitting the__esmwrapper.
…cate-braceless-module-vars
The linker lifts a top-level `var x = <constant>` above the `__esm` wrapper. After the relocation of a `var` from a body without braces, or from a `for` head without initializer, the wrapper stores into the same top-level variable, so the lifted store ran first: `if (c) var x = "body"; var x = 2;` gave "body" to a reader outside. The parser marks such a `var` on the root of its symbol (`VAR_STORES_STAY_IN_WRAPPER`). The linker then declares the name outside and keeps every store of it in the wrapper, in source order, and `needs_wrapper_ref` counts such a store. `SymbolFlags` grows to `u16`; `Symbol` stays 48 bytes.
…efresh registration A `var` in a dead brace-less body is relocated as well, so the wrapper's other reads and stores of the name reach the top-level variable. Its later top-level store must stay in the wrapper too: `if (false) var x; x = "store"; var x = 2;` gave "store". With `--react-fast-refresh`, a component declared by a brace-less module-level `var` is registered again after its relocation. The registration loop of `s_local` moves into `register_react_refresh_decls`.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
The new VAR_STORES_STAY_IN_WRAPPER flag closes the brace-less store-order path raised on the previous push. Beyond the inline finding, I also checked: the SymbolFlags u8 to u16 widening keeps the size_of::<Symbol>() <= 48 assert and the flags are not serialized anywhere; has_top_level_function_merged_with_var is fully set during parsing before the visit-time relocates_single_stmt_body_decls gate reads it; the extracted register_react_refresh_decls body is byte-identical to the old loop, and the new call on the early-return path is reachable via bun build --react-fast-refresh.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the JS parser's var relocation, the TS enum emitter, the linker's __esm hoisting path and a new symbol flag, affecting bundler and REPL output only; it touches no security-sensitive surface. One pre-existing-class finding is posted inline, and the earlier store-order concern has been addressed by the new flag, so this note only records what else was ruled out.

Two notes from #45529. That PR keeps the store of every top-level 1. The exception for a file with a top-level In such a file // s.js, loaded with require("./s.js"), bun build --format=cjs
function f() { return 1; }
var f = 2;
if (globalThis) var x = 1;
var x = 2;
function read() { return x; }
globalThis.out = { inBody: x, read };
So #45529 is a draft until its base has this PR, and #44001 together with the end of that exception. Can the exception go in the PR that makes it unnecessary (#44001, or this one after it)? 2. The symbol mark #45529 decides with one predicate ( |
